Leaves opposite, mostly with leaflike stipules in whorls of 4, 6, or more, usually sessile or occasionally petiolate, without domatia, abaxial epidermis sometimes punctate- to striate-glandular, mostly with 1 main nerve, occasionally triplinerved or palmately veined; stipules interpetiolar and usually leaflike, sometimes reduced. Inflorescences mostly terminal and axillary (sometimes only axillary), thyrsoid to paniculiform or subcapitate, cymes several to many flowered or in- frequently reduced to 1 flower, pedunculate to sessile, bracteate or bracts reduced especially on higher order axes [or bracts some- times leaflike and involucral], bracteoles at pedicels lacking. Flowers mostly bisexual and monomorphic, hermaphroditic, sometimes unisexual, andromonoecious, occasionally polygamo-dioecious or dioecious, pedicellate to sessile, usually quite small. Calyx with limb nearly always reduced to absent; hypanthium portion fused with ovary. Corolla white, yellow, yellow-green, green, more rarely pink, red, dark red, or purple, rotate to occasionally campanulate or broadly funnelform; tube sometimes so reduced as to give appearance of free petals, glabrous inside; lobes (3 or)4(or occasionally 5), valvate in bud. Soza, [email protected] Abstract Rubieae are centered in temperate regions and characterized by whorls of leaf-like structures on their stems. Previous studies that primarily included Old World taxa identified seven major clades with no resolution between and within clades. In this study, a molecular phylogeny of the tribe, based on three chloroplast regions (rpoB-trnC, trnC-psbM, trnL-trnF-ndhJ) from 126 Old and New World taxa, is estimated using parsimony and Bayesian analyses. Seven major clades are strongly supported within the tribe, confirming previous studies. Relationships within and between these seven major clades are also strongly supported. In addition, the position of Callipeltis, a previously unsampled genus, is identified. The resulting phylogeny is used to examine geographic distribution patterns and evolution of leaf-like whorls in the tribe. An Old World origin of the tribe is inferred from parsimony and likelihood ancestral state reconstructions. At least eight subsequent dispersal events into North America occurred from Old World ancestors. From one of these dispersal events, a radiation into North America, followed by subsequent diversification in South America, occurred. Parsimony and likelihood ancestral state reconstructions infer the ancestral whorl morphology of the tribe as composed of six organs. Whorls composed of four organs are derived from whorls with six or more organs. -

Naturforsch. 57c, 226Ð234 (2002); received October 23/November 23, 2001 Galium, Iridoids, Phylogeny From 19 species of Galium, members of 6 European sections of the genus, 24 compounds were isolated, namely 16 iridoid glucosides, 2 secoiridoid glucosides and 6 triterpene saponins (the later found only in G. rivale (Sibth. & Sm. Griseb.) The iridoid content was analyzed by thin layer chromatography Ð densitometry. An effort was made to clarify interspecies relationships, based on the obtained results and previous data. Generally, a nearly uniform iridoid pattern in the studied species was observed. Nevertheless, some distinctions gave reason the following chemical characters to be treated as taxonomic markers: iridoids, seco- galioside (characteristic of G. mollugo group), iridoids V1 and V2 (G. humifusum Bieb. and G. verum L.), 6-acetylscandoside (G. incurvum group and G. verum) and the triterpene sapo- nins, rivalioside A and rivalioside C (characteristic of G. rivale). The studied species regarding to the iridoids could be attributed to three lines of evolutionary differentiation. One line is leading to the differentiation of G. rivale. It contains specific triterpenoids as well as iridoid acids, which show parallel development of both glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate/pyruvate and mevalonate biosynthetic routes in this species. -
A New Species of Colletoecema (Rubiaceae) from Southern Cameroon with a Discussion of Relationships Among Basal Rubioideae

SONKÉ1, S. DESSEIN2, H. TAEDOUMG1, I. GROENINCKX3 & E. ROBBRECHT2 SUMMARY Colletoecema magna, a new species from the Ngovayang Massif (southern Cameroon) is described and illustrated. A comparative morphological study illustrates the similar placentation and fruit anatomy of the novelty and Colletoecema dewevrei, the only other species of the genus. Colletoecema magna essentially differs from C. dewevrei by its sessile flowers and fruits, the corolla tube that is densely hairy above the insertion point of the stamens and the anthers that are included. Further characters that separate the novelty are its larger leaves, more condensed inflorescences, and larger fruits. Its position within Colletoecema is corroborated by atpB-rbcL and rbcL chloroplast sequences. The relationships among the basal lineages of the subfamily Rubioideae, to which Colletoecema belongs, are briefly addressed. Based on our present knowledge, a paleotropical or tropical African origin of the Rubioideae is hypothesized. Key words: Rubioideae, Rubiaceae, Colletoecema, chloroplast DNA, Ngovayang massif. INTRODUCTION Up to now, Colletoecema was known from a single species, i.e. C. dewevrei (De Wild.) E.M.A.Petit, a Guineo-Congolian endemic. The genus was established by Petit (1963) based on ‘Plectronia’ dewevrei (Rubiaceae, Vanguerieae), a species described by De Wildeman (1904). Petit (1963) demonstrated that this species does not belong to the Canthium complex and described a new genus, i.e. Colletoecema. He also showed that the original position in Vanguerieae could not be upheld. -

Asperula subsimplex FAMILY: RUBIACEAE BOTANICAL NAME: Asperula subsimplex, Hook.f., Hook. Lond. J. Bot. 6: 463 bis (1847) COMMON NAME: water woodruff COMMONWEALTH STATUS: (EPBC Act) Not Listed TASMANIAN STATUS: (TSP Act) rare Asperula subsimplex. Tasmanian Herbarium specimen. Description A small perennial herb of aquatic habit. Stems: This species has square stems that are between 10-20 cm long, hairless and usually erect. Leaves: The leaves are stalkless (sessile) and in whorls of 4, except below a branch where whorls of 6 can occur. The leaves are narrow-linear shaped and approximately 2-5 mm long. The leaves of the upper whorls are often shorter and broader than the rest and have rough, hairy upper surfaces. The upper surfaces of the lower whorls are usually hairless. The leaf margins are sometimes bent under. Flowers: The cream, very fragrant flowers are either solitary or in clusters of two to three-flowers located in the axils (where the leaf meets the stem) of the upper leaf whorls. Flowering is from October to February (Flora of Victoria). Fruit: The fruit is dry and does not split open. It consists of two, one-seeded parts (description from Curtis 1963, Kirkpatrick 1988, Willis 1972). See Thompson (2009) for an updated description and key. This species is readily identifiable by being near glabrous and its 4 leaf whorls, small dull leaves, few flowered clusters and ovary of female flowers with a recessed nectary after corolla-fall (Thompson2009). Ecology and Management There is currently no information available regarding the ecology and management of this species. Conservation Status Assessment There is not enough information available to enable a meaningful reassessment of Asperula subsimplex. -

Through analysis of geomorphological attributes in a geographic information system, the boundar- ies of the Sierra were established, revealing an area of 3,632 km2, featuring 22 municipalities and an altitudinal range of 50 to 3,000 m a.s.l. Results: Seven vegetation types were described, as well as a foristic list of 3,016 species, including 72 type localities, 36 endemics, 57 registered in the NOM-059, 2010 and 195 in the CITES. -

Standl. has been incorrectly applied to a common and wide-ranging Mexican and Central American species whose correct identity is Didymaea mexicana Hook. f. In this paper a lectotype is selected and designated for D. mexicana. The characters separating these two frequently confused species are discussed. Further systematic studies of the genus Didymaea are suggested. Key words: Central America, Didymaea, Mexico, Rubiaceae, typification. RESUMEN El nombre Didymaea alsinoides (Schltdl. & Cham). Red dye obtained from the roots of Rubia tinctorum L., naturally found in the flora of Turkey and known as common madder, has been used as the source of a natural dye since ancient times. In this work, a preliminary report is given on anatomical and palynological traits of R. tinctorum distributed in the Aegean Region of Turkey examined by light and scanning electron microscopy. In the root anatomy, the cortex composed of multilayered parenchyma cells, the vascular tissue organized in collateral vascular bundles, 1(-2)-rowed ray cells, and the pith with a cavity at the center are observed. In the leaf anatomy, the bifacial and amphistomatic leaf, the dorsiventral mesophyll with one layer of columnar palisade parenchyma cells and a few layers of irregularly organized spongy parenchyma cells, and the midrib with a large collateral vascular bundle surrounded by parenchymatous bundle sheath cells are recognized.
