Lawson1 Abstract Samples of men's and women's names drawn from English language editions of Israeli telephone directories identify the most common names in current usage. These names, categorized into Biblical, Traditional, Modern Hebrew, and Non-Hebrew groups, indicate that for both men and women over 90 percent come from Hebrew, with the Bible accounting for over 70 percent of the male names and about 40 percent of the female. Pronunciation, meaning, and Bible citation (where appropriate) are given for each name. ***** The State of Israel represents a tremendous opportunity for names research. Immigrants from traditions and cultures as diverse as those of Yemen, India, Russia, and the United States have added their onomastic contributions to the already existing Jewish culture. The observer accustomed to familiar first names of American Jews is initially puzzled by the first names of Israelis. Some of them appear to be biblical, albeit strangely spelled; others appear very different. What are these names and what are their origins? Benzion Kaganoffhas given part of the answer (1-85). He describes the evolution of modern Jewish naming practices and has dealt specifi- cally with the change of names of Israeli immigrants. Many, perhaps most, of the Jews who went to Israel changed or modified either personal or family name or both as part of the formation of a new identity. However, not all immigrants changed their names. Names such as David, Michael, or Jacob required no change since they were already Hebrew names. -

It is bounded by the Mediterranean Sea on the west and the Arabian Desert on the east, and therefore is a land bridge of relatively fertile ground between Asia Minor to the north and Egypt to the south. This strategic position made the country a battleground throughout the centuries, and the land has been fought over and held by many different nations and peoples: the Canaanites, Hittites, Israelites, Philistines, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Egyptians, Greeks, Syrians, Romans, Arabs, and Jews. Abraham, Ishmael, and Isaac The Book of Genesis tells the story of a Chaldean man named Abraham, who lived around 1900 BC. He dwelt in the city of Ur in Babylonia (modern-day Iraq), and received a call from God to leave Ur and move his family to what was then known as the land of Canaan. Genesis describes how Abraham, whose name means “father of multitudes,” was blessed by God because of his faith and obedience. Abraham was told that through his bloodline the Messiah, “The Anointed One,” would come. All of the peoples of the earth would be therefore be blessed through his descendents. After arriving in Canaan, Abraham settled in the area of Hebron, and he purchased the Caves of Machpelah as a burial place for himself and for future generations of his family. -

chapter 27 The Samaritan Pentateuch and the Dead Sea Scrolls: The Proximity of the Pre-Samaritan Qumran Scrolls to the sp* The study of the Samaritans and the scrolls converge at several points, definitely with regard to the biblical scrolls, but also regarding several nonbiblical scrolls. Recognizing the similarities between the sp and several Qumran biblical scrolls, some scholars suggested that these scrolls, found at Qumran, were actu- ally Samaritan. This assumption implies that these scrolls were copied within the Samaritan community, and somehow found their way to Qumran. If cor- rect, this view would have major implications for historical studies, and for the understanding of the Qumran and Samaritan communities. This view could imply that Samaritans lived or visited at Qumran, or that the Qumran commu- nity received Samaritan documents, but other scenarios are possible as well. A rather extreme suggestion, proposed by Thord and Maria Thordson, would be that the inhabitants of Qumran were not Jewish, but Samaritan Essenes who fled to Qumran after the destruction of the Samaritan Temple by John Hyrcanus in 128 bce.1 Although this view is not espoused by many scholars, it needs to be taken seriously. The major proponent of the theory that Samaritan scrolls were found at Qumran was M. Baillet in a detailed study of the readings of the sp agreeing with the Qumran texts known until 1971.2 Baillet provided no specific arguments for this view other than the assumption of a close rela- tion between the Essenes and the Samaritans suggested by J. 25/06/2020 When we hear the word, SAMARITAN, most of us think of two disparate things. Firstly, that it is a definition of good people, particularly those with a THE SAMARITANS charitable disposition. Secondly, that they were a section of the populace who lived in the time of Jesus and who would have ceased to exist many centuries ago. Both of those beliefs contain inaccuracies. Wikipedia used to have two disparate pages: • SAMARITANS which dealt with the charities of that name; • SAMARITAN which dealt with the religion, the Samaritans. The names of the pages have now been changed to SAMARITANS (CHARITY) and SAMARITANS respectively. The Samaritan Pentateuch and the Scribal Culture of Second Temple Judaism Abstract: The Samaritan Pentateuch (SP), along with its Qumran forebears, has deservedly been regarded as a key source of information for understanding the scribal culture of early Judaism. Yet studies have tended to emphasize the relative uniformity of the characteristic pre-SP readings as evidence of a scribal approach distinct within Second Temple Judaism. This article argues that both the uniformity and the distinctiveness of these readings have been overstated: there is more internal diversity within pre-SP than is usually recognized, and similar or identical readings are also preserved in other manuscript traditions. Rather than representing a distinctive scribal approach or school, the readings of pre-SP are better taken as a particularly concentrated example of scribal attitudes and techniques that appear to have been widespread in early Judaism. Analysis of biblical manuscripts and versions focused primarily on recovery of the “original text”; in this sense, materials introduced by scribes in the course of transmission were treated as significant only insofar as, once identified, these materials could be bracketed out, and something closer to the Urtext could be reconstructed.2 More recently, much more attention has been paid to such scribal interventions as cultural products in their own right; as windows not just on the development of the text but on the attitudes and ideologies of the individuals and groups that comprised the diverse phenomena we collectively label Second Temple Judaism.
