The parasite was observed attached to the wall of the host intestine by an armed proboscis equipped by recurved hooks. 14 out of 40 fish specimens (35.0%) were found to be infected during winter season only. The mean intensity ranged from 4-10 parasites/infected fish. The recovered worms were creamy white, elongated with narrow posterior end. Light and scanning electron microscopy showed that the parasite has distinctive rows of spines (combs) on the ventral surface. Body was 3.55±0.02 (3.33-3.58) mm long. Width at the base of probocis was 0.10±0.02 (0.08-0.12) mm. Proboscis club-shaped with a broad anterior end, euipped by longitudinal rows of hooks, each with 15-19 of curved hooks. Neck smooth, the double-walled receptacle was attached to the proboscis wall. Trunk was spinose anteriorly, spines arranged in 7-10 collar rows, each was equipped with 15-18 spines. -

A bibliographic analysis of these papers, the number of species reported in the checklists, and a list of new species are presented in this paper. Key words: Acanthocephala, new species, checklist, bibliography The Phylum Acanthocephala is a relatively small group of endoparasitic helminths (helminths = worm-like animals that are parasites; not a monophyletic group). Adults use vertebrates as definitive hosts (fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals), eggs are passed in the feces and infect arthropods (insects and crustacean) as intermediate hosts, where the cystacanth develops, and the cystacanth infects the definitive host when it is ingested. In some cases, fishes, reptiles, and amphibians that eat arthropods serve as paratenic (transport) hosts to bridge ecological barriers to adults of a species that typically does not feed on arthropods. -

Neoechillorhynchus pimelodi sp.n. is described as the first record of Acanthocephala in Pimelodlls macula/lIs Lacépéde, 1803, collected in the São Fran cisco ri ver, Três Marias, Minas Gerais. The new spec ies is distinguished from other of the genus by lhe lhree circles of hooks of different sizes, and by lhe eggs measurements. The hooks measuring 100- 112 (105), 32-40 (36) and 20-27 (23) in length in lhe males and 102-1 42 (129), 34-55 (47) and 27-35 (29) in lenglh in lhe fema les for the anterior, middle and posterior circles. The eggs measuring 15-22 (18) in length and 12- 15 ( 14) in width, with concentric layers oftexture smooth, enveloping lhe acanthor. KEY WORDS. Recent integrative approaches combined analyses of DNA and morphological observations. Such studies resulted in severe taxonomic revi- sions within the subclass Calcinea and provided the foundation for a phylogenetically meaningful classification. However, several genera are missing from DNA phylogenies and their relationship to other Calcinea remain uncertain. One of these genera is Leuclathrina (family Leucaltidae). We here describe a new species from the Maldives, Leuclathrina translucida sp. nov., which is only the second species of the genus. Like the type species Leuclathrina asconoides, the new species has a leuconoid aquiferous system and lacks a specialized choanoskeleton. -

Two acanthocephalan species (Neoechinorhynchus agilis in Liza aurata; Acanthocephaloides irregularis in Scorpaena porcus) and 4 nematode species (Hysterothylacium aduncum in Merlangius merlangus euxinus, Trachurus mediterraneus, Engraulis encrasicholus, Belone belone, Caspialosa sp., Sciaena umbra, Scorpaena porcus, Liza aurata, Spicara smaris, Gobius niger, Sarda sarda, Uranoscopus scaber, and Mullus barbatus; Anisakis pegreffii in Trachurus mediterraneus; Philometra globiceps in Uranoscopus scaber and Trachurus mediterraneus; and Ascarophis sp. in Scorpaena porcus) were found in the intestines of their hosts. We identified six helminth endoparasite taxa, being Phylum Acantocephala and Family Trichuridae the most prevalent. The high prevalence of the Family Ancylostomatidae indicates a possible transmission via domestic dogs, which are abundant in the study area. Nevertheless, our results indicate that the endoparasite species found are not different from those observed in protected or least disturbed areas, suggesting a high resilience of maned wolf and their parasites to human impacts, or a common scenario of disease transmission from domestic dogs to wild canid whether in protected or unprotected areas of southeastern Brazil.
