Support for the Picasa desktop album ended on March 15 Google announced it was discontinuing support for Picasa Desktop and Web Albums, effective March 15, 2016, and focusing on the cloud-based Google Photos as its successor. Picasa Web Albums, a companion service, was closed on May 1, 2016 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picasa Though it will continue to work for users who already have it installed. Uploaded Picasa photos were transitioned to Google Photos on May 1. Google Photos has rapidly gained traction. In October, the company claimed it had more than 100 million active monthly users. In his review, PCMag analyst Michael Muchmore praised the interface, which he found to be "clean, minimal, and pleasing, with thumbnails of your photos organized by date.“ - I however miss many of the tools that picasa had offered. Unfortunately the link to download the old program no longer works, it redirects to Google Photos http://picasa.google.com/intl/en_uk/ What is the difference between Picasa, Google Photos,...? • Picasa is a software program that you install on your computer to let you edit and organize your digital photos and videos on Windows and MacOS computers. It offers easy-to-use features to upload pictures to photos.google.com. • Movies: Introducing Picasa 3 and What's new in Picasa 3.5 • Support site: Picasa • Install from: picasa.google.com • Google Photos for desktop is a website where you can upload pictures from your computer into "Albums" and share them with friends and family. There is also basic editing functionality as well as some features that reduce the workload for you organizing your photos collection like automatic tagging, auto-enhancing photos and videos, stitching panoramic pictures, etc. • Link: photos.google.com • Support site: Google Photos https://sites.google.com/site/picasaresources/Home/Picasa-FAQ/general/comparison-different-products What is the difference between Picasa, Google Photos,...? • Google Photos for mobile • is an app for use on Android or iOS smartphones that offers similar features as Google Photos for desktop. • Install from: Google Play on Android, or from Apple app store on iOS. • Support site: Google Photos • Picasa Web Albums (aka Picasaweb) (UPDATE: this website is shut down and sends you to google album archive) • is a website where you can see the same pictures that appear in Google Photos and share them with friends and family. But... no enhancements or changes have been made to Picasaweb since 2012, so it is getting quite outdated while all effort is being put into Google Photos. If you don't have a specific reason to keep using Picasaweb, you might prefer to use Google Photos. Some actions (like sort photos by name, public albums) are still available in Picasaweb but not (yet) in Google Photos. • Support site: Picasa Picasa Web Albums: www.picasaweb.com • Retired products • Google+ Photos was the "photos" section on the social network called Google+. The photos section was officially discontinued and replaced by Google Photos in 2015. More info: https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6142214?hl=en&ref_topic=6128818 • Google+ Photos now redirects to photos.google.com https://sites.google.com/site/picasaresources/Home/Picasa-FAQ/general/comparison-different-products Picture Sharing, Editing, Organizing • Picasa www.picasa.com • Image editing, presenting and online hosting program from Google. • Free Download required W M A Image is from a 2012 presentation by Salina Public Library Overview • If you have Picasa open when you hit Print Scrn, it will automatically save the capture as a file. VERY useful for things like this presentation or emailing what you see on your screen. http://staff.beaumont.k12.tx.us/gloker/picasaintro.ht m Overview • Picasa also: emails, burns CD, creates nifty Photo Collages, Prints Contact Sheets, Make Back UP CDs or DVDs, Export as Web Page, Order Pictures, Publish to Blogger http://staff.beaumont.k12.tx.us/gloker/picasaintro.ht m Overview http://staff.beaumont.k12.tx.us/gloker/picasaintro.ht m Picasa Also • Emails • Burns CD • Creates nifty Photo Collages • Prints Contact Sheets • Make Back UP CDs or DVDs • Export as Web Page • Order Pictures • Publish to Blogger • Compare duplicates • Take over screensaver http://staff.beaumont.k12.tx.us/gloker/picasaintro.ht m Collage http://staff.beaumont.k12.tx.us/gloker/picasaintro.ht m Organization • One of the challenges with a digital camera is the large number of images you will accumulate. – Notice 44k…not including weddings, school or church photos. • In the old days, with prints if you wanted a picture to be in two places, like on a refrigerator and an album, you just made two prints. Of course you can still do that today. • But how can a digital file be in two places at the same time. Well, it can’t unless you use a program like Picasa which categorizes every picture on your computer, and then allows you to create Virtual Albums. – Virtual Albums help you keep up with your favorites and allow for easy sync with your web album http://staff.beaumont.k12.tx.us/gloker/picasaintro.ht m Download http://staff.beaumont.k12.tx.us/gloker/picasaintro.ht m Getting Started http://staff.beaumont.k12.tx.us/gloker/picasaintro.ht m • ONLY scan My Documents, My First Launch Pictures and the Desktop. • The top option will scan the entire computer, which you may need to do if you have lost some images…but this will also add items from inside the Windows folder on the C drive and you will spend a lot of time removing stuff. http://staff.beaumont.k12.tx.us/gloker/picasaintro.ht m Photo Viewer Configuration • You MAY not like what Picasa does, but I think it is a wonderful way to browse your images even before you launch Picasa • Go ahead and Select All…you can always change it later. http://staff.beaumont.k12.tx.us/gloker/picasaintro.ht m Managing Your Folders • Go to Tools, then Folder Manager • Scan always any folders with pictures – Avoid Network Drives – Try to add a root of pictures rather than an individual folder http://staff.beaumont.k12.tx.us/gloker/picasaintro.ht m Managing Your Folders http://staff.beaumont.k12.tx.us/gloker/picasaintro.ht m Creating Virtual Albums • Click on a photo that may need to appear in more than one album. – Add to album – the first time you will need to create the album. – Afterwards, you can click and select or drag and drop. http://staff.beaumont.k12.tx.us/gloker/picasaintro.ht m Managing Your Folders • Edit folder descriptions to force pictures to stay current, like a folder of edits. (2x click) – Folders with new images will be bold.
