A note from the Head of School

We have had another fantastic week of sport, with success in rowing and athletics.

As this is my last newsletter, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all boys and parents who have sup- ported Jack, Adam and I over the past year. It has been a true pleasure and an honour to help lead this school community. Written by the Head of School, Charlie

1ST VIII WIN AGAIN AT READING REGATTA

The 1st VIII and J16s entered Reading Regatta last weekend, one of the toughest on the circuit, with top class competition from schools, clubs and universities from the UK and abroad, preparing for Henley.

The J16 eight was unlucky to draw Bryanston’s J18 1st VIII, losing by two lengths with an excellent row. The J16 coxed four raced their final against Shiplake’s top four, losing by a small margin, but gaining some great race experience as they prepare for Great Britain J16 trials at the end of the month.

The 1st VIII had another excellent regatta, winning yet again, this time over three rounds against some top club and uni- versity competition. They had an outstanding performance in the final against University of West of England’s 1st VIII.

Captain of Boats, Jack, was satisfied with the crew’s performance: ‘An aggressive start, great rhythm and plenty of watts put us ahead from the start. We never gave UWE a chance and we can find more speed in the run-up to Henley.’

MONMOUTH RUNNERS BOWLED OVER BY ENGLAND CRICKET CAPTAIN Two Monmouth boys competed in the British Athletics Junior Road Mile Championships in Lon- don – and met England’s one-day cricket captain Eoin Morgan.

Monmouth School for Boys’ pupils Henry and Harry enjoyed running the Vitality Westminster Mile around St James’s Park, before half term. The Under-13 boys’ race was just after the elite men, so they had the thrill of following in the footsteps of some of the leading middle distance runners in the UK.

And to further inspire them, Henry and Harry had a selfie before their race with Eoin Morgan who had com- pleted the course in support of the Ruth Strauss Foundation and who is now leading England in the Cricket World Cup.

The quality of the Under-13 boys’ field was very high with the winner completing the mile in 4:45. However, both Monmouth boys finished in under 5:30 and within the top 30. Harry came 23rd in 5:23, setting a new per- sonal best, and Henry was 27th in 5:27.

Well done boys, and good luck to Eoin and England! TRIBUTES TO OM WHO DESIGNED MCCLAREN'S FIRST F1 CAR An Old Monmothian, who had a successful career in motorsport and a spell as chairman at Oxford United Football Club, has died at the age of 80. Robin Herd was a skilled engineer and designed McLaren’s first ever car.

A pupil at Monmouth School for Boys between 1949 and 1958, he took A levels in Chemistry, Maths, Higher Maths and Physics and was head of Hereford House. Mr Herd studied at St Peter’s College in Oxford, graduating with a double first in Physics and Engineering, having turned down an offer to play cricket for Worcestershire. He joined the Royal Aircraft Establishment in 1961 to work on the Concorde project and was recruited by Bruce McLaren in 1965, having been alerted to an engineering vacancy with the constructor by former school friend and racing driver Alan Rees. Mr Herd stayed with McLaren until 1968 — during which time he designed their M4B, M5A and M7 Formula One cars, as well as the successful M6A Can-Am car before moving to Cos- worth where he carried out work for Frank Williams in 1969 to modify one of his cars.

Mr Herd came close to joining forces with Bernie Ecclestone and Jochen Rindt to form an F1 team, but in- stead he hooked up with fellow Oxford graduate , Alan Rees and Graham Coaker to co-found Bicester-based in 1969. The team completed 207 Formula One Grand Prix races between 1970 and 1992, winning three races and achieving four pole positions. The team enjoyed a great deal of success in and, in the 1980s, they made a foray into Indycars, with March cars winning the for five successive years from 1983 to 1987.

Mr Herd sold March Racing to the Japanese property company Leyton House in 1989 and created Robin Herd Ltd. Mr Herd’s last active involvement in motorsport was with an Indy Racing League team project in the late 1990s. Instead Mr Herd focused with considerable success on his other business interests. He was chairman of Oxford United Football Club for three years and established a company investigating natural ways of produc- ing energy.

Sadly, Mr Herd, who grew up in Ross-on-Wye, died last week after a long illness. NATIONAL ATHLETICS SUCCESS We are delighted to be able to let you know that, last weekend, two boys from Monmouth School for Boys came away from the Welsh Outdoor Junior Championships in Wrexham with medals.

Aharon (pictured left), competing as a junior U15, entered four events. He came third and took the bronze in the pole vault with a clearance of 2.45m and also came third in the triple jump with a distance of 9.45m - a new PB. He also took part in the long jump and 200m. A very good performance considering he was compet- ing against boys a year older.

Harry (pictured left) confirmed his position as the top U13 Boy middle distance track runner in Wales by achieving the "Double Double" by winning the 800m and 1500m and becoming Welsh U13 Boys National Champion in both these events thus matching his indoor titles at these distances from earlier in the year.

He now has four Welsh National Titles to his name. He is currently ranked in the top 40 for 1500m and in the top 20 in the UK for 800m as well as for the javelin.

Huge congratulations to both boys and good luck with the rest of the season.
