INTRODUCTION Almost every woman has had the experience of being trivialized, regarded as if she is just 'some dumb girl,' of whom few productive accomplishments can be expected. When viewed simply as 'some dumb girls,' women are treated dismissively, as if their thoughts or contributions are unlikely to be of value and are unworthy of consideration. 'Some Dumb Girl Syndrome' can arise in deeply personal spheres. A friend once described an instance of this phenomenon: When a hurricane threatened her coastal community, her husband, a military pilot, was ordered to fly his airplane to a base in the Midwest, far from the destructive reach of the impending storm. This left her alone with their two small children. -

Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story Name for “Block” by Arnold Schwarzenegger Simon & Schuster 2012 646 Pages
DOI 10.1515/cjpp-2012-0046 Calif. J. Politics Policy 2013; 5(1): 132–138 Q1: A.G. Block Please spell out first Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story name for “Block” By Arnold Schwarzenegger Simon & Schuster 2012 646 pages I recently spent a fantastic week in the company of Arnold Schwarzenegger, a former tank driver in the Austrian Army. Schwarzenegger, who some time ago moved from the Alps to Brentwood, published an “unbelievably true life story” this fall, and it was my privilege to worry through it on behalf of this publication. Critics dismissed the book as “light.” I beg to differ. A 646-page hardback is hardly light. FedEx used a forklift to dump it on the porch, and it took a team of Clydesdales to drag it through the front door. That said, it is ironic that a celeb- rity whose fame grew from bulk and muscle should produce a memoir so lacking bulk and muscle. The images sprayed into it amount to autobiographical graffiti; “profound” was not a priority. To be sure, Schwarzenegger traveled an extraordinary road, lined with mul- tiple triumphs, any one of which might have satisfied a more modest appetite. As an athlete, he was named “Mr. Olympia” a record six times, his charisma both tonic and toxin to bodybuilding as serious competitive sport. As an actor, he became an internationally recognized action hero who created one of the most memorable characters in film history – “The Terminator.” As a businessman, he combined instinct, risk-taking, and relentless salesmanship to accumulate a financial portfolio that rivals the Nabob of Hyderabad. -

Without his assistance, this thesis would never have come to fruition. I greatly appreciated his unfettered support, trust, and understanding throughout the research and writing process. I am also grateful for my professors, who over the years have continuously inspired and challenged me to work hard and give my best. I would not have come as far without their assistance and ability to motivate me at every turn. A sincere thank you must be extended to Candice Kerestan for her diligent proofreading, constructive criticism, and wonderful wit. Finally, more than academic support is needed to complete a thesis. Therefore, I want to express my profound gratitude towards my parents for providing unfailing support and understanding throughout my university education. -
Warren's Way Back from the Budget Cliff
WARREN’S WAY BACK FROM THE BUDGET CLIFF: “ACTION, ACTION, ACTION” WON’T BE NOT ENOUGH* Werner Z. Hirsch, UCLA Professor Emeritus Daniel J.B. Mitchell, Ho-su Wu Professor at the UCLA Anderson School of Management & Department of Public Policy, UCLA School of Public Affairs “We support Prop 57 and we support Prop 58, and I think you will see very shortly even the Democratic Party will come on board and support both of those initiatives. They are essential to our economic survivability. We need those in order for the state’s fiscal crisis not to be pushed over a cliff.” Assembly Speaker Fabian Nuñez supporting state borrowing to cover past and current deficits under Propositions 57 and 58 on the March 2004 ballot1 “…Never again will the politicians drive our state to the verge of bankruptcy. It will be a whole new ballgame. Trust me.” Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger supporting Propositions 57 and 582 “You really know how to hurt a guy.” Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger when asked whether his budget proposals, involving borrowing to cover deficit spending, were not similar to former Governor Davis’ proposals3 In the previous edition of California Policy Options, we traced the evolution of California’s state budget crisis up through the October 2003 gubernatorial recall election.4 Various remedies that have been discussed by fiscal analysts were outlined in that chapter. None of these proposals have been adopted. The budgetary fix of 2004-05 is widely viewed as temporary and postpones problems that will emerge in later years. Although through July 2004 attention focused on the day-to-day negotiations and procedures that ultimately produce the annual state budget, the fact is that the forces that led to the budget crisis developed over many years. -

Arnold Schwarzenegger: a Biography'
H-German Bischof on Krasniewicz and Blitz, 'Arnold Schwarzenegger: A Biography' Review published on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 Louise Krasniewicz, Michael Blitz. Arnold Schwarzenegger: A Biography. Westport: Greenwood Press, 2006. 192 pp. $29.95 (cloth), ISBN 978-0-313-33810-6. Reviewed by Günter Bischof (CenterAustria, University of New Orleans) Published on H-German (May, 2007) Towards A Life of Arnold The usual paradigm in which the history of Austrian immigrants to the United States has been narrated is one of "the quiet invaders."[1] There is nothing quiet or bashful about Arnold Schwarzenegger, the bodybuilder turned actor and Hollywood icon turned politico. He has been an in-your-face superstar producing serial blockbuster movies. With this image of his global star power, much of which he has very consciously cultivated, a political career was launched that brought him to Sacramento and the governorship of California in 2003. As the governor of a state comprised of almost 40 million residents (illegal immigrants included), and with an economy that is the sixth strongest in the world, he has perforce become a major player in the American political arena. Ever since he listened with the help of a translator to the Nixon vs. Johnson presidential race in 1968, when he first entered the United States, he has called himself a Republican. Nixon sounded less "socialist" to him than Johnson. Yet on social issues (abortion, stem-cell research) he is far removed from the ideological core of the Republican Party. Economically he is a firm believer in laissez-faire and a strict follower of Milton Friedman, whom he befriended, but at the same time has accepted the fact that global warming does occur and that the government needs to get involved to control emission of greenhouse gases. -

Thank you. John Burton, you are a credit to your genetics. -- You are the living embodiment of the counter-productivity of term limits in the state of California. -- and it is an honor to receive this award named for such a formidable figure as Philip from such a formidable figure as his brother – who is legendary in his own time as a champion of the people. – and I want to point out I have said all this without the use of a single expletive. Harvey, Jamie, Doug, … your organization does fine work and I will accept this as an indication of your respect for my profession and for people who can attract some attention, who aren’t running for office, who do their homework and speak out and try to help clarify public dialog whether they are to the left or the right. Somehow most actors who run for public office seem to be right wingers. – I could give you my theory as to why that is – but I won’t take your time. - - It has to do with the incompatibility of art and politics which frankly has always irritated the hell out of me. The wonderful Sheila Kuehl has been able to navigate from acting to politics successfully and she’s a liberal and to Sheila I remove my chapeau. We’ve known each other since we did a Dobie Gillis together in 1959. And Sheila I couldn’t be prouder of what you’re doing in Sacramento. -- and I know that together we can refute these tawdry tabloid rumors of our continuing affair.
