The present study of a typical steppe species Iris pumila L. (Iridaceae) has analyzed the impacts of geographical isolation and population size on genetic diversity and population structure in conditions of habitat fragmentation. The key indices of population genetic variability calculated from the ISSR markers data were on average as follows: Shannon diversity index (S) – 0.188; unbiased Nei’s gene diversity (He) – 0.123; and the average measure of Jaccard’s genetic distances between individuals within populations – 58.4%. Although the largest population had significantly higher values of S and He, the small and marginal populations also showed a comparable level of variation. Most of the genetic variation of I. pumila was distributed within the populations. A strong correlation was found between Nei’s genetic distances and geographic distances between the populations. According to the Bayesian analysis, genetic structure of the populations was highly homogeneous; however, the presence of admixed genotypes indicated the possibility of gene flow between the populations at present. PETER ERSKINE THE SMALLER DAPHNES Daphnes belong to the Thymelaeaceae and although they are capricious and may not grow for you, few other genera in the family are so attractive. Of the latter we were shown two Pimelea P. ligustrina from New Zealand and and P. oreophula from New Zealand and Ovidia andina from the southern Andes. Most Daphnes are Eurasian, from Western Europe to Japan and are absent in the New World. Their variety was seen in a slide of pot grown ones at Blackthorn Nursery. The typical flower has four spreading sepals (there are no petals), eight stamens in two whorls of four and a single seed or rice grains within a berry at the base of the calyx tube. Although some Daphne grow to 3m. or more , the talk was concerned with those of much smaller stature. The first species seen was Daphne x transatlantica 'Jim's Pride' a D. caucasia x collina cross. D. mezereum is very useful as a grafting plant since stock is readily raised from seed as are D. longilobata , D. giraldii and D. tangutica. The self fertile, winter deciduous, long- tubed, yellow flowered D. giraldii (213/223,258/). D. x transatlantica 'Jim's D. x transtlantica 'Jim's Pride' - Pennsylvania Hort.Soc. To facilitate effective conservation management of dry-grassland diver- sity we studied the habitat selection of Carabus hungaricus, the globally declining, highly endangered, dry-grassland specialist beetle listed in the EU Habitats Directive, and several co-occurring beetles at a pannonian dry-grassland fragment, the Pouzdr- any steppe, SE Czech Republic. The beetles were sampled using 186 pitfall traps from March to November 2006. Number of C. hungaricus captures in each trap was related to vegetation and abiotic habitat characteristics; captures of all sampled bee- tles in each trap were related to each other. 2. We found that C. hungaricus prefers relatively humid patches of tall-grass steppe within the xeric grassland and tall-grass ruderal vegetation nearby. During the breed- ing period, females preferred drier and warmer sites than males. 3. Its potential competitors, i.e., Carabus spp., Calosoma spp. (Coleoptera: Carabi- dae), and other species of conservation interest, including Meloe spp. (Coleoptera: Meloidae), Dorcadion spp. (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), were associated with vegeta- tion avoided by C. hungaricus, such as short-grass and bare-soil patches and woody plants. 4. The May plant sale will return to the Ithaca High School on May 14. Our tables/booth are located in the new gym, same as last year, exact location TBD, so look for us. Sale hours are 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (although we may sell out earlier). Set up is Friday beginning at 4 p.m. until about 7 p.m. and Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. You may arrive early Saturday to drop off plants and help complete the setup. This year we appreciate, if you can, to sign-up to help in advance. We most need people for set-up and clean-up. The Shell-bourse of the Club Conchylia and regulations on the trade of protected species The last annual seashell shows of the Club Conchylia have been a great success. It very well deserves its status as an International Shell Convention: by the number of participants, the different nationalities, and the quality and variety of shells exhibited. While most dealers restricted their offerings to shells, there were some that had various objects foreign to conchology for sale: reptile skulls, turtle shells, dried fish, shark jaws, stone-corals and sea fans! Most of these items are illegal to trade, for others there may be certificates allowing the sale, but a question came to mind: what impression would an unbiased person get from seeing such items on sale at our shell-bourse? Having skeletons and bodies, or other products, of species protected by law at our shell shows draws a bad light on the Club Conchylia and the attitude of its members and the shell dealers admitted to the bourses. The board of our Club wishes to express a request to dealers who wish to participate at our bourses, which is not to display any of the following at their tables: 1) no living vertebrates or products made from them 2) no carvings from bones, horns, teeth, or antlers, no matter if taken from living or fossil animals. 3) no species that are protected by any law that applies in Germany should be offered openly, even if a CITES certificate is available, to avoid misunderstandings (see list below). The Club Conchylia hopes that all dealers attending the German show will respect these guidelines. -

Fourth National Report to the CBD – MALTA Republic of Malta 2010 Compiled by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority Fourth National Report to the CBD – MALTA Executive Summary Malta has been a Party to the United Nations (UN) Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) since 29 December 2000. It is also a Party to other UN Conventions, a member of the Council of Europe and a Member State of the European Union, amongst others. As a Party to the CBD, Malta is required to contribute to the achievement of the Convention’s three objectives at a national level. These three objectives which underpin the principles of sustainable development are: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilisation of genetic resources (Article 1 of CBD Convention text). Malta has made several efforts, especially in the last decade, in order to protect the natural heritage that it is bestowed with. Such efforts also positively contribute to achieving the CBD’s objectives at a national level as further expounded of this report. Maltese people share their islands and surrounding marine environment with a remarkable variety of species and also depend on various ecosystem services for their day-to-day comfort and security. Such ecological services are driven by biodiversity and the functioning of healthy ecosystems. Indeed, the myriad of species of flora and fauna that inhabit the Maltese Islands interact with biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) factors to form inexorably complex communities that play an important role in ecosystem functioning and in the associated ecological services that are indispensable for supporting the Maltese community.
