IT’S A NEW DAY. With the inauguration of Kamala Harris as the first Female and Black and Asian American Woman to hold the position of Vice president in our 245 year old history, many of us felt joy and happiness that our country was finally choosing a woman, and especially someone from a diverse background. In her inauguration speech, Kamala said that he (Joe Biden) had the “boldness to select a woman. ” Biden’s picks for his new administration was filled with many firsts. His picks represent the most diverse cabinet with women and minorities, including his selection for Secretary of Interior, Deb Haland, who would be the First Native American to hold the position. However, Kamala Harris’ win could not have come without the many phenomenal and ground-breaking firsts that happened in our country’s past. For example, how many of us learned about Shirley Chisholm? She was the first Black woman elected to the U.S. House of representatives in 1968, and was the first Black person and the first WOMAN to make a bid for the Democratic nomination for president of the United States. Here is a quote from Shirley Chisholm: “You women better wake up if you want to change America around. You do the work. You better wake up. And Don’t be afraid. Have confidence in yourself. And the ability you have is ability and talent given to you by God and don’t let anyone use you. You don’t let people continue to use you and manipulate you. The only thing you have is your integrity and your principles and convictions of what we’re fighting for in America…” (Shirley Chisholm, CBS Video, date unknown) To celebrate the many milestones and recent positive stories of AMAZING WOMEN in the news, at CU Boulder, and around the country, below are some stories collected over the past couple months. Happy reading! Amazing Women at CU Former CU Boulder postdoc Jennifer Doudna smashes glass ceiling with historic Nobel win Who could forget this impressive article in CU Boulder Today about Jennifer Doudna with her historic Nobel win! “Doudna, a professor of biochemistry at University of California Berkeley, shares the award with French microbiologist Emmanuelle Charpentier, marking the first time in history that a science Nobel has been won by two women together.” (emphasis added) “The Nobel Foundation honored Doudna and Charpentier for their discovery, a decade in the making, that a gene-cutting molecule known as Cas9, which is used naturally by bacteria to kill viruses, can be re- engineered as a precise gene-editing tool.” Read the full article. The College of Engineering & Applied Science announced, “The highly competitive program provides paid internships and mentoring to exceptional undergraduate women seeking careers in aviation or space exploration. Students Grace Antonucci, Giselle Koo, Erica McNamee, Maria Callas, and Jasmin Chadha, with majors from across the College of Engineering and Applied Science, have been named 2021 winners.” Real the full article here. CU Boulder has the most 2021 honorees of any university. “The program honors the memory of Brooke Owens, a space industry pioneer and accomplished pilot. Owens’ career took her to NASA, the X-Prize Foundation, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the White House. Her enthusiasm and passion for aerospace led friends and colleagues to create a foundation to inspire and train exceptional undergraduate women with the same zeal for space exploration.” SPEAKING OF SPACE As part of Black History Month Celebrations, CU’s Bold Center and the Ann and H.J. Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences hosted a special presentation with by NASA legend, Dr. Christine Darden, named “The Four P’s to NASA” I had the pleasure of attending the virtual presentation and she spoke about her experiences in her career as a “human computer” for NASA, and as an engineer and about how she guided herself through her career using the “Four P’s” that she created to motivate herself to overcome her shortcomings (she went to a segregated high school which offered limited math classes; and in college, many other students had already taken more advanced classes). She fell in love with plane geometry when she transferred to a boarding school, and she found she had a passion for math. She mentioned that if you have a passion for what you are doing, you are going to work harder. Here are Dr. Darden’s Four P’s to NASA: The Four P’s to NASA: Perceive of yourself in that career (she saw herself working at NASA) Plan what you need to get there Preparing. Work your plan. Persist. Keep going. Don’t stop. “During her 40-year career at NASA she worked as deputy program manager of the TU-144 Experiments Program, an element of NASA’s High-Speed Research Program. In 1999, she was appointed as the director in the Program Management Office of the Aerospace Performing Center where she was responsible for Langley research in air traffic management and other aeronautics programs managed at other NASA Centers. Darden also served as technical consultant on numerous government and private projects, and is the author of more than 50 publications in the field of high lift wing design in supersonic flow, flap design, sonic boom prediction, and sonic boom minimization.” What an inspiring and amazing woman! I was glued to my home work station!!! Emily Harrington Climbs El Capitan. If you didn’t hear about the fabulous feat of CU Alum and professional athlete Emily Harrington, she made national headlines with the fastest time ever, taking the Golden Gate route in under 24 hours! Marlins hire Kim Ng as first female general manager in MLB history Ng, is also the first Asian-American GM in baseball, previously she has been an assistant GM with the Yankees and Dodgers. "On behalf of Principal Owner Bruce Sherman and our entire ownership group, we look forward to Kim bringing a wealth of knowledge and championship-level experience to the Miami Marlins," Marlins CEO Derek Jeter said in a statement reported the ESPN article. Read the full story here. And who could forget Sarah Thomas, the first female Referee at this year’s Superbowl (for the first time in 55 year history!) Sarah is also the first permanent female NFL referee since 2015. What’s truly amazing is that, these are only the ones we hear about. We all probably know at least one person who has took challenges head-on, made exceptional strides in adversity, and still managed to be kind and generous to others. These are the people who inspire us to also be bold! If you want to share, email me [email protected]. Name: Kimmi Pepitone Position: RES Junior Real Estate Officer How long have you worked at CU Boulder? What do you love most about working here? I have been working at CU for two and a half years. • The Podium in Sport Is Not Just for Medals, but for History
This page was exported from - The Auroran Export date: Sat Oct 2 16:24:42 2021 / +0000 GMT The podium in sport is not just for medals, but for history If there's something 2020 has taught us, it's that sport is more than just a professional game that athletes make their millions from. It has inspired competitive athletes to write new chapters in the stories of their sport ? and make some history in this new normal. Kim Ng became the first female general manager in Major League Baseball for the Miami Marlins, writing her story in the annals of sport. It's a huge accomplishment. This year, many WNBA games were televised. Even Kim Davis, the NHL's Executive VP of social impact, growth initiatives and legislative affairs, spoke of ending the racism in hockey this year. But, looking at the NHL, no woman has even been a GM or Assistant GM before. Aurora resident Michela Lio would like to be the first. ?I've always dreamed of being the first woman, whether a GM or Assistant GM (in the NHL),? she says. ?It's a huge stretch but it's definitely something that I want to work as hard as I can for. But you know, there's steps to get to that point.? Lio officially accepted her Div.1 hockey scholarship to Massachusetts' College of the Holy Cross on November 14. She will be studying business at the school and looks to be involved in Sports Management. To get there she'll do just about anything required of her, from bringing cups of coffee to the office and to even working for Toronto's arch-nemesis, the Boston Bruins.

  • SF Giants Press Clips Friday, September 28, 2018
SF Giants Press Clips Friday, September 28, 2018 San Francisco Chronicle Can Giants spoil the Dodgers’ season? Henry Schulman Kevin Frandsen remembers the at-bat vividly. In the waning days of his major-league career, which began and ended with the Giants, he got a start against Clayton Kershaw at AT&T Park. Having barely played at all in September 2015, he expected Kershaw to bust him inside with fastballs. Frandsen got one and swung a bit early but managed to push it up the middle for a single. That was the Giants’ only hit in an 8-0 Dodgers victory that clinched the third of what is now five consecutive National League West titles. When Kershaw completed his shutout, he and his teammates turned the ballpark blue. They danced on the field and decorated the visiting clubhouse in Champagne. “He was special that night,” Frandsen said. “He smelled blood in the water at AT&T, knowing a win clinched it for them.” Once again, the schedule has brought these ancient rivals together for the season’s final weekend with a chance for one team to party and the other to ruin it, the way the Giants did when Joe Morgan hit his home run in 1982, or when the Dodgers beat Salomon Torres to send a 103-win Giants team home in ’93. In three of the past four seasons, the Dodgers have clinched the West by beating the Giants. In 2014, they did so at Dodger Stadium, again with Kershaw on the mound, and it happened last year on Tommy Lasorda’s 90th birthday.
