Kim Ng became the first female general manager in Major League Baseball for the Miami Marlins, writing her story in the annals of sport. It's a huge accomplishment. This year, many WNBA games were televised. Even Kim Davis, the NHL's Executive VP of social impact, growth initiatives and legislative affairs, spoke of ending the racism in hockey this year. But, looking at the NHL, no woman has even been a GM or Assistant GM before. Aurora resident Michela Lio would like to be the first. ?I've always dreamed of being the first woman, whether a GM or Assistant GM (in the NHL),? she says. ?It's a huge stretch but it's definitely something that I want to work as hard as I can for. But you know, there's steps to get to that point.? Lio officially accepted her Div.1 hockey scholarship to Massachusetts' College of the Holy Cross on November 14. She will be studying business at the school and looks to be involved in Sports Management. To get there she'll do just about anything required of her, from bringing cups of coffee to the office and to even working for Toronto's arch-nemesis, the Boston Bruins.

This program is held in conjunction with the Museum’s groundbreaking current special exhibition, Chasing Dreams: Baseball and Becoming American. In a live interview with WHYY Senior Reporter and guest host of Fresh Air, Dave Davies, Ng will speak firsthand about how she, as a Chinese American woman, broke barriers in a traditionally male- dominated field. Ng is the senior most female executive with Major League Baseball. Ng recently spoke with the Museum about her first experience with the game: “I don’t think my experience is different than [that of] a lot of other kids. My first experience was going to a Yankees game with my parents when I was nine years old. My mom got tickets from her bank and we went and it was helmet day. My sister and I came back with helmets and put them on our shelves in our rooms. Here’s a look back at just some of the triumphs by women in the previous year. BUSINESS ROZALIND "ROZ" BREWER: In January 2021, Brewer was named the CEO of Walgreens, a 2020 DiversityInc Top 50 Noteworthy Company. When she takes over on March 15, Brewer will be only one of two current Black woman CEO of a Fortune 500 company, and only the second in history. THASUNDA BROWN DUCKETT: In late February 2021, TIAA (No. 9 on the 2020 DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity list) announced Brown Duckett will be the company's next CEO, making her and Brewer the only two Black women CEOs on the Fortune 500.     SF Giants Press Clips Friday, September 28, 2018 San Francisco Chronicle Can Giants spoil the Dodgers’ season? Henry Schulman Kevin Frandsen remembers the at-bat vividly. In the waning days of his major-league career, which began and ended with the Giants, he got a start against Clayton Kershaw at AT&T Park. Having barely played at all in September 2015, he expected Kershaw to bust him inside with fastballs. Frandsen got one and swung a bit early but managed to push it up the middle for a single. That was the Giants’ only hit in an 8-0 Dodgers victory that clinched the third of what is now five consecutive National League West titles. When Kershaw completed his shutout, he and his teammates turned the ballpark blue. They danced on the field and decorated the visiting clubhouse in Champagne. “He was special that night,” Frandsen said. “He smelled blood in the water at AT&T, knowing a win clinched it for them.” Once again, the schedule has brought these ancient rivals together for the season’s final weekend with a chance for one team to party and the other to ruin it, the way the Giants did when Joe Morgan hit his home run in 1982, or when the Dodgers beat Salomon Torres to send a 103-win Giants team home in ’93. In three of the past four seasons, the Dodgers have clinched the West by beating the Giants. In 2014, they did so at Dodger Stadium, again with Kershaw on the mound, and it happened last year on Tommy Lasorda’s 90th birthday.
