The tropical forest of Central Africa is the second largest stretch of rain forest on Earth, yet the least known. Increasing demographic growth and economic interests are major threats to this ecosystem. The origin of fire-adapted lineages is a long-standing question in ecology. Although phylogeny can provide a significant contribution to the ongoing debate, its use has been precluded by the lack of comprehensive DNA data. Here we focus on the ‘underground trees’ (= geoxyles) of southern Africa, one of the most distinctive growth forms characteristic of fire-prone savannas. 2. We placed geoxyles within the most comprehensive dated phylogeny for the regional flora comprising over 1400 woody species. -

In this study, in vivo antiplasmodial and in vitro antioxidant activities, phytochemical screening of secondary metabolic and in vivo toxicological studies where carried out on aqueous and methanolic extracts of its leaves. The plant was selected following an ethnobotanical survey conducted in DR Congo and focusing on antimalarial plants. Extracts’ phytochemical secondary metabolites were determined using standard procedures and the antiplasmodial activity was evaluated using 4-day suppressive test, while antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH assay. -

Nowadays, it is represented by a reduced forest fragment with a surface of about 50 to 70 hectares. The flora inventory was performed on the forest trees at dbh ≥ 10 cm, measured at 1.30 m of high at the breast height trunk, allowed to identify 134 different kinds of plants divided into 109 genera and 31 families. Fabaceae, Malvaceae, Rubiaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Moraceae, Meliaceae and Sapotaceae are the most represented families. The value of the basal area got in this forest massif is high or 49.89 m2.ha-1. As to the ecological spectra and phytogeographical distribution, mesophanerophytes, sarcochores, mesophyles and the Congolian-Guinea element are the most numerous. The density of the forest trees listed in this forest massif is of 422 trunks.ha-1. Brachystegia laurentii is the species having the highest number of feet or 11.8%. -

This article presents a preliminary study on the use of plants carried out in the village of Bekaraoka located in the North East of Madagascar. With the help of standardized questionnaires, two traditional healers and 175 informants were interviewed on the medicinal use of local flora. 76 species turned out to be used as a medicine by residents the area. Fabaceae Family predominates in number of species. Leaves were most commonly used, with 30,1 % of the plants being used to treat gastrointestinal disorders (diarrhea, abdominal pain, stomach aches). -
