  • First, Three Notes from the Dean: … and Two Invitations from Deborah
Dear Friend of the Cathedral, Here we are at the beginning of a long, hot, relaxed summer, delighting in the permission to reconnect with friends and family. However, most church activities are on holiday while we refresh our energies, so the newsletter too will be on hiatus until the end of August, with a possible letter in late July to remind us of Pride events. This week’s letter is a bumper issue which you can read at your leisure over the next few weeks. Please be sure to read the profile of a special member of our community in the last part of the newsletter. First, three notes from the Dean: • Livestreaming option From this Sunday, we will start to Livestream our three Sunday morning services on YouTube as well as continuing to use Zoom for now. You will be able to reach our YouTube channel at www.montrealcathedral.ca/live/ It would be helpful if you could subscribe to the channel and ‘like’ it. This would not only mean that you would be informed when new livestreams are starting or videos are being added if you wish, but it will also give the cathedral additional options for running the channel. Archival videos of previous services, evensongs, music and other educational material will be kept there, as will sermons. • Survey Thank you to all who completed the survey. This is now closed. We are working on analysing the data collected and will be in touch with those who have agreed to take part in small group discussions over the coming weeks.

Rev. A. Bruce Stavert -Eveque bishop@q uebec.a nglican.ca June 21,2004 To: The Council of the Ecclesiastical Province of Canada From: Bishop Bruce Stavert, Bishop of Quebec Re: Election of a Metropolitan Dear Members of Council, I need to inform the members of the Provincial Council that I have received from Archbishop Andrew Hutchison a letter of resignation as Archbishop of Montreal and as Metropolitan of the Ecclesiastical Province of Canada. The resignation is to take effect July 31, 2004 and when the members of the House of Bishops have accepted the resignation. This resignation, as you will know, is the result of Archbishop Hutchison's Election as Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada. Canon II of the Canons of the Province of Canada says that "when the office of Metropolitan becomes vacant the diocesan bishop senior by consecration shall summon the Provincial Council to meet as an electoral college within six months of the vacancy occurring." The next regular meeting of the Provincial Council is scheduled for September 23-26,2004 in Gander, Newfoundland. I therefore summon the Provincial Council to meet as an electoral college on Thursday, September 23,2004 at St. Martin's Cathedral in Gander for the purpose of Electing a Metropolitan for the province, the election to be preceded by a celebration of the Holy Eucharist. I have requested the Secretaries of the Provincial Synod to distribute this notice of summons with their distribution of information and agenda for the meeting of council.

BISHOP JAMES ALMASI The bishop of the Diocese of Masasi in Tanzania is expected to be a guest at the Diocese of Montreal Synod in October, as is Bishop Barbara Andrews from the Anglican Parishes of the Central Interior (of British Columbia). See Brian Perron’s article on Page 4. FRANCIE NADEAU-KEATS The Rev. Francie Nadeau-Keats from the Quebec Lower North Shore has accepted another interim posting in the Diocese of Montreal: this time at the Church of the Epiphany Verdun. See Page 14. GÉRALD CYPRIEN CARDINAL LACROIX The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Quebec City told an ecumenical “Green Church” conference in Quebec City that, “I am convinced that we are ‘ripe’ enough to become a Green Church! I rejoice as I see the climate that exists between our churches to reflect and help our members on this question, the respect of the environment, of Creation. We live on this earth that God generously created and gave us.” See Page 10 and the accompanying issue of The Anglican Journal. Farewell Montreal, hello Glebe Members of Hungry Minds, a young adult Bible study group led by the Rev. Rhonda Waters (at right in photo) at Christ Church Cathedral, joined her at a bittersweet reception on the eve of her departure for Ottawa. On the staff of the Cathedral since her ordination as a deacon in 2011 and priest in 2012, she is especially known for her work, among other things, on behalf of the young of all ages, whether designing Sunday school curriculum or organizing a national gathering of younger priests. The Alberta native was also an online columnist for the Anglican Journal and chaplain of the Montreal Diocesan Theological College. Her husband, Thomas Cormie, a lawyer, has accepted a job in Ottawa with the federal justice department and they have moved there with their son, Gilbert. She has been appointed interim priest-in-charge at St. Matthew’s Church in the Glebe district of Ottawa. document The Canadian Press Lifestyles, Tuesday, August 1, 2006 INDEX:Religion, Social Eric Shackleton The Canadian Press Linda Privitera, an ordained priest in the U.S. Episcopal Church, has felt "marginalized" ever since joining her spouse Melissa Haussman - a Carleton University professor - last fall in Canada. The two, who tied the knot in Massachusetts and whose marriage was recognized in Canada, quickly found themselves caught up in the cut and thrust of the Anglican Church of Canada's battle over whether married homosexual pastors should be allowed to minister to congregations. Within days of being given a temporary licence by the bishop to preach in the Ottawa diocese, Privitera was dismissed after several clergy angrily protested the move. She's now "in discernment about a location where I can best exercise my ministry ... offer my gifts," says Privitera, 59, who just completed her doctorate in theology at the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Mass. "It's hard to be told that there's no room for me to do that here." Privitera's greatest worry, since she's so close to retirement, is that her ministry might end in "a whimper," she says. When Privitera arrived in Ottawa last November, everything looked rosy. Canada, like Massachusetts, her home state, had turned a friendlier face toward gays and lesbians by making same- sex marriage legal. Privitera was told by Bishop Peter Coffin that she could seek a parish, pointing to St. Mary the Virgin as a possible posting. Then the sky fell in - she had run afoul of the church's conservative faction.
