Theatre UNB presents Comedy Double Bill Nov 28-Dec 1 Theatre UNB presents an evening of farce and fancy with two one-act comedies on the same bill: Peter Shaffer’s uproarious classic Black Comedy and Jean Anouilh’s absurdist gem Episode in the Life of an Author. Performances are in Memorial Hall on the University of New Brunswick campus and run nightly from Wednesday, November 28 to Saturday, December 1 at 8pm. When a young sculptor wants to impress a millionaire art collector, the last thing he needs are the distractions of a drunken neighbour, a stern father-in-law-to-be, and a spiteful ex-girlfriend – not to mention the power going out. Shaffer’s ingenious farce employs a reversed lighting scheme, in which everything the audience can see the characters cannot, and vice versa. What his eccentric characters are up to behind each other’s backs – or in front of their unseeing faces – makes for British comedy at its finest. Sharing the bill is Anouilh’s delightfully bizarre play about a man’s life spinning out of control. The Author may want to stay calm and muse about love, but this becomes impossible in the face of a hysterical wife, an inquisitive journalist, strange phone calls, needy friends, and a mysterious plumbing problem that just may bring down the house – literally. The plays are directed by John Ball, designed by Mike Johnston, and feature a combined cast of 16 talented student actors. Tickets are $10 | $6 for students, and available at the door. For more information, please email [email protected] or phone the Theatre UNB hotline at (506) 447-3078. 2. Fredericton Folk Festival Shivering Songs Line up announced Nov 29 To announce initial lineup: Thursday November 29 at Fredericton’s Cedar Tree Café info + press tools @ http://www.shiveringsongs.com Two winters ago, New Brunswick chamber-folk group, The Olympic Symphonium, curated a weekend of music in their hometown as a way of celebrating their third album. The overwhelming success of the ‘Shivering Songs' festival made it apparent that there was a demand for folk music in beautiful, quiet settings around the heart of Fredericton, and the band decided to make it an annual event. We are extremely pleased to invite you to Fredericton’s Cedar Tree Café from 5-7pm this Thursday, November 29, where we will unveil the initial lineup for our third edition. Picaroons Traditional Ales will be on site sampling beer, we’ll have live music, and the Cedar Tree will be serving mezza appetizers. What’s more, each person at the launch will receive a raffle ticket, and we’ll draw for two weekend passes to the 2013 festival. For those unable to get to the event in person, we will live tweet the announcement with the #ShiveringSongs2013 hash tag. The 2013 Shivering Songs festival will run January 25-27 in Fredericton, NB at Wilmot United Church, the Boyce Farmer’s Market, the Capital Complex and the Cedar Tree Cafe. Weekend passes and individual tickets will go on sale immediately following the lineup unveiling at at the Café as well as online at www.shiveringsongs.com. 3. Dec. 6-8, 7:30 & Dec. 8-9, 2pm Theatre New Brunswick presents It’s A Wonderful Life With a little divine intervention – and one determined guardian angel–will George Bailey learn that his has been, after all, a wonderful life? George Bailey is the everyman of Bedford Falls whose loyalty and generosity keep him from ever leaving his hometown. One fateful Christmas Eve, he finds himself alone and in trouble. This year the cast of TNB’s 2009 hit returns to bring this beloved holiday story of hope and redemption. 3 December 12, 2pm & 7:30pm Dance Fredericton presents The Nutcracker This fairy tale ballet opens with the festive Victorian party scene on Christmas Eve in the Stahlbaum home and later follows Clara and the Nutcracker Prince on their journey to the Land of the Sweets. Cinema Politica Fredericton presents Maxime, McDuff and McDo Nov 30 The screening will be held at Conserver House, 180 St. John St., Fredericton, at 7pm on November 30. The 2002 documentary by award-winning director Magnus Isacsson, Maxime, McDuff and McDo (52 min.), profiles two young men, Maxime and Pascal when these two employees attempt to form a union at a Montreal McDonald's. Their initiative to form a union at a Montreal outlet of McDonald's fast food empire, famous for its 'McJobs' and its ferocious resistance to unions, sets off a series of events that quickly get out of control. Faced with continuous pressure from their boss, their workmates, their families, the union and the media, the two young men have to work hard to keep their enterprise on track. Director Magnus Isacsson passed away in August of this year, after a prolific 42-year career in Canada. Isacsson made numerous documentary films and worked in television for year after emigrating from Sweden in 1970. Toronto, ON (June 16, 2011) The Polaris Music Prize Long List was revealed today by Steve Jordan, Prize Founder and Executive Director, at a press conference held at the Drake Hotel in Toronto earlier today. This is the sixth year of the prize, which awards $30,000 to the best Canadian alBum, judged solely on artistic merit, without regard to genre or record sales. The Long List consists of the top 40 full-length Canadian records released from June 1, 2010 to May 31, 2011, according to a vote by the 227 memBers of the Polaris Music Prize jury. The jury consists of music journalists, broadcasters and Bloggers from across Canada. Jordan also announced that the Long List is being presented by Recordings Arts Collecting Society, a division of ACTRA. “The Polaris Music Prize is an important event for Canadian recording artists and is one of the few awards where the winner is chosen based solely on artistic merit,” said Ferne Downey, ACTRA National President. “ACTRA RACS is thrilled to come on board to sponsor this year’s Long List and celeBrate the best music our country has to offer.” The Polaris Jury will now vote to reduce the Long List to the 10 title Short List which will be revealed July 6 at the Drake Hotel in Toronto on a live broadcast on SIRIUS Satellite Radio Canada’s channel 152 and CBC Radio 3.

  • Musicians for Palestine Final 245Pm
Musicians For Palestine In Solidarity and Empathy, As musicians, we cannot be silent. Today it is essential that we stand with Palestine. We are calling on our peers to publicly assert their solidarity with the Palestinian people. Complicity with Israeli war crimes is found in silence, and today silence is not an option. Silence is not an option as the brutal Israeli bombardment of besieged Gaza claimed more than 245 lives in the last weeks. Silence is not an option as residents of Sheikh Jarrah in occupied Jerusalem are continuously forced out of their homes. Silence is not an option as millions of Palestinian refugees are denied their collective right of return. The Israeli government operates a settler-colonial project committed to the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian population. The legacies of systemic violence, racism and dispossession shaped by colonialism must stop. We call on all governments to stop funding all resources and technologies that back the Israeli state and their war crimes. Today, we speak together and demand justice, dignity and the right to self- determination for the Palestinian people and all who are fighting colonial dispossession and violence across the planet. We call for you to join us with your name in refusing to perform at Israel’s complicit cultural institutions, and by standing firm in your support of the Palestinian people and their human right to sovereignty and freedom. We believe this is crucial to one day live in a world without segregation and apartheid.
