1. Theatre UNB presents Comedy Double Bill Nov 28-Dec 1

Theatre UNB presents an evening of farce and fancy with two one-act comedies on the same bill: Peter Shaffer’s uproarious classic Black Comedy and Jean Anouilh’s absurdist gem Episode in the Life of an Author. Performances are in Memorial Hall on the University of New Brunswick campus and run nightly from Wednesday, November 28 to Saturday, December 1 at 8pm.

When a young sculptor wants to impress a millionaire art collector, the last thing he needs are the distractions of a drunken neighbour, a stern father-in-law-to-be, and a spiteful ex-girlfriend – not to mention the power going out. Shaffer’s ingenious farce employs a reversed lighting scheme, in which everything the audience can see the characters cannot, and vice versa. What his eccentric characters are up to behind each other’s backs – or in front of their unseeing faces – makes for British comedy at its finest.

Sharing the bill is Anouilh’s delightfully bizarre play about a man’s life spinning out of control. The Author may want to stay calm and muse about love, but this becomes impossible in the face of a hysterical wife, an inquisitive journalist, strange phone calls, needy friends, and a mysterious plumbing problem that just may bring down the house – literally.

The plays are directed by John Ball, designed by Mike Johnston, and feature a combined cast of 16 talented student actors.

Tickets are $10 | $6 for students, and available at the door.

For more information, please email [email protected] or phone the Theatre UNB hotline at (506) 447-3078.

Joan Clark: Having decided against joining the Norwegian navy, Joan Clark was persuaded to marry an engineer, Jack Clark, and to undertake a peripatetic life across Canada, before settling, finally, in Newfoundland in 1985. Self-taught, Clark began to write on the kitchen table while her young son napped. Her fiction, translated into seven languages, has been published in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Britain, and the United States. Winner of numerous awards, including the Newfoundland and Labrador Book Award and the Winterset Award, Clark is the only Canadian writer to win both the Marian Engel Award (for a body of work in adult fiction), and the Vicky Metcalf Award for (a body of work in) Children’s Literature. Clark, currently working on a novel for adults, is fascinated by the idiosyncrasies of human nature and our relationship to what we call home.

Jane Tims: botanist and poet, has published in The Dalhousie Review, The Fiddlehead, CAROUSEL, PRISM International, The Antigonish Review, Canadian Stories, and Whetstone. With a Creation Grant under Arts New Brunswick, Tims has combined interests to write poems on growing and gathering local foods. 5 11. Monday Night Film Series presents Headhunters Dec 3

December 3, 7:30pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus Headhunters Director: Morten Tyldum Cast: Askel Hennie, Julie Ølgaard, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Synnøve Macody Lund, Eivind Sander Run Time: 101 minutes Country: NORWAY Year: 2011 Language: Norwegian with English subtitles

A Special Presentation at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival, and based on Jo Nesbø's novel of the same name, Headhunters transforms the award-winning bestseller into a wildly entertaining and darkly comic thriller. Directed with aplomb by Morten Tyldum, Headhunters taps into the current trend of Scandinavian crime fiction, and comes loaded with visceral twists as it takes devastating aim at modern mores.

When we first meet Roger Brown (Aksel Hennie, Max Manus, Cold Lunch), he’s happily married to Diana (Synnøve Macody Lund) and lives in an opulent modern home. The only problem is that Roger suffers from a crippling Napoleon complex. He’s so terrified of losing Diana that he continually lavishes her with expensive gifts. More significantly, he can’t earn enough in his work as a corporate headhunter to pay for his extravagances, so he’s been forced to moonlight as an art thief, stealing rare works from his high-flying clientele. When Diana introduces Roger to the charismatic, suave Clas Greve (Nikolaj Coster- Waldau, HBO’s Game of Thrones), Roger plots to steal the famously 'lost' Rubens painting Greve claims to own. But this latest job uncovers something that could bring his precariously maintained lifestyle crashing down around him.

It’s doubtful you’ll see a more engaging or timely thriller this year.
