Situations 8.1 (2015): 23-44 ISSN: 2288-7822 A Tale of Two Stars: Understanding the Establishment of Femininity in Enka through Misora Hibari and Fuji Keiko Tong Koon Fung Benny (Australian National University) Abstract To date, most female portrayals and performances in the Japanese popular music genre of enka have been understood in terms of the homogenous ideal of the subservient, outdated image of “the traditional Japanese woman.” Yet, two of enka’s most important female singers, the “queen of enka” Misora Hibari and “the girl destined to carry enka’s star” Fuji Keiko, possess starkly contrasting images in the public imagi- nation—something that tends to question the adequacy of homogenous understandings of enka’s femininity, based allegedly on Japanese tradition. In this paper, I examine the careers of Hibari and Fuji with a focus on the conditions of musical production and promotion, utilizing biographical accounts and critiques of these two singers. Through this analysis, I argue that dominant representations of female “subservience,” “outdatedness” and of the “Japanese-ness” in enka emerged out of contingent decisions that particular musical producers and singers made within the context of the Japanese music industry in the 1960s and 1970s. The argument offers a more recent historical origin for the stereotypical femininity of enka, highlighting the dialectical relationship between individual-level musical praxis and certain Japanese social discourses in those decades. These complex forces condemned Fuji in her late career to obscurity, while ultimately securing Hibari’s status as a national symbol of perseverance. What is ‘Japanese music’? Increasingly, the common view of Japan as a mono-cultural, mono-ethnic society, whether in modern or ancient times, is being challenged (Denoon et al. 1996). The category ‘Japan’ itself has been questioned by many (for example Amino 1992; Morris-Suzuki 1998). Amino insists that when discussing the past we should talk not about Japan or the Japanese people, but about people who lived in the Japanese archipelago. If Japan itself is not a solid entity, neither can its musical culture be reduced to a monolithic entity. If the apparently simple label ‘music of Japan’ might refer to any music to be found in Japan, then the phrase ‘music of the Japanese’ would cover any music played or enjoyed by the Japanese, assuming we can talk with confidence about ‘the Japanese’. The phrase ‘Japanese music’ might include any music that originated in Japan. This book would ideally cover all such possibilities, but must be ruthlessly selective. It takes as its main focus the musical culture of the past, and the current practices of those traditions as transmitted to the present day. A subsidiary aim is to assess the state of research in Japanese music and of research directions. The two closing chapters cover Western-influenced popular and classical musics respectively. At least, rather than ‘Japanese music’, we might do better to talk about ‘Japanese musics’, which becomes one justification for the multi-author approach of this volume.

Crafting the Showa Dream in Popular Song: “Hachi-Roku” and the Invention of Modern Kayokyoku, 1959-65 Michael FURMANOVSKY Ryukoku University 要旨大衆向け歌曲に託された昭和の夢ーー「八六」と現代歌謡曲の発現(1959-65) 本稿では、昭和 30 年代後半(1959-65)に、歌謡曲と呼ばれる現代日本のポピュラー・ソングの礎が築かれる中で、永六輔と中村八大という伝説に名高い作詞家・作曲家のコンビが果たした役割について考察する。当時都会に暮らす日本人の夢や欲望、そして挫折を明確にし、それを歌に織り込むことにおいて、早稲田が輩出したこの 2 人の作詞・作曲家が、いかに同業者たちを凌いでいたかを指摘する。 2 人が生み出す楽曲は、単調だが安定の得られる事務職に就き、核家族家庭に身を落ち着け始めた、いわゆる新しいサラリーマン世代の心を捉えたのである。さらに本稿では、この 2 人の作詞・作曲家たちが活躍した時代の社会・文化的背景にも着目し、テレビ番組「夢であいましょう」に２人が提供した楽曲の歌詞を分析することを通して、時代精神を捉える能力において、この２人がいかに秀逸を極めていたかを明らかにする。 Introduction In recent years, cultural studies scholars working in the field of post-war Japanese popular music, have made great strides in uncovering a history that just ten years ago was largely unexplored. While still considered somewhat obscure, this rich history is gradually reaching a new audience of younger Japanese who have developed a nostalgic interest in mid-Showa-era culture, both material and artistic (Sand, 2007). This article aims at adding Japan’s post-war songwriting to the contributions and analysis made by scholars writing in English in the area of jazz (Atkins 2001, Molasky, 2006); enka (Yano, 2002); kayōkyoku and Group Sounds (Bourdaghs, 2012); rokabiri (Furmanovsky, 2008); folk (Tachi, 2009); rock (Stevens, 2008) and hip hop (Condry, 2006). Of these popular culture specialists, the work of Bourdaghs deserves special merit since his recent Sayonara Amerika, Sayonara Nippon is the first detailed analysis of the main currents of Japanese pop music since the war. Bourdagh’s work, which is discussed later, builds on the pioneering studies of the pre- war years by Mitsui Toru (1997). Mitsui’s work, as well as that of Japanese scholar Kikuchi Kiyoshi (2008), has been especially useful in bringing attention to Koga Masao -1- and Hattori Ryuichi, the two leading figures in pre-war Japanese musical innovation.

Perry All Rights Reserve iii ABSTRACT Walter Grunden, Advisor During the Allied Occupation of Japan, Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers (SCAP) Douglas MacArthur set forth on a mission to Americanize Japan. One way SCAP decided this could be done was by utilizing forms of media that were already popular in Japan, particularly the radio. The Far East Network (FEN), a network of American military radio and television stations in Japan, Okinawa, Guam, and the Philippines, began to broadcast American country & western music. By the early 1950s, Japanese country & western ensembles would begin to form, which initiated the evolution toward modern J-pop. During the first two decades of the Cold War, performers of various postwar subgenres of early Japanese rock (or J-rock), including country & western, rockabilly, kayōkyoku, eleki, and Group Sounds, would attempt to break into markets in the West. While some of these performers floundered, others were able to walk side-by-side with several Western greats or even become stars in their own right, such as when Kyu Sakamoto produced a number one hit in the United States with his “Sukiyaki” in 1963. The way that these Japanese popular music performers were perceived in the West, primarily in the United States, was rooted in centuries of Orientalist preconceptions about Japanese people, Japanese culture, and Japan that had recently been recalibrated to reflect the ethos of the Cold War.

8 Populor Music LINDA FUJIE Among both scholars and laymen, any discussion of the definition of "popular music" is apt to produce a wide variety of definitions. * Taking the first com- ponent of the term Iiterally, one must first ask, "popular among whom?" since different kinds of music are popular among different segments of a given society. As John Blacking has pointed out, [Popular music] is music that is liked or admired by people in general, and it includes Bach, Beethoven, and the Beatles, Ravi Shankar, Sousa's marches and the "Londonderry Air." ... Tue music that most people value most is popular music; but what that music is, varies according to the social class and experience of composers, perfonners and Iisteners. ' Even ignoring such societal differentiation, and using, for example, sales figures of recordings as the basis for determining "the music that most people value most" within a single country, difficulties persist. How does one labe! the songs written in a style similar to "hit" songs but that do not seil weil? On the other band, if popular music were to be defined not on the basis of some artificial index of "popularity" but on the basis of a particular musical style, how would one account for the wide range of musical styles found among the music of Bob Dylan, Barbra Streisand, and the Grateful Dead, all of which has been labeled "popular music" of one type or another. The editors of a periodical entitled Popular Music offer the opinion that ''from one point of view 'popular music' exists in any stratified society.

Their bodies were sites of political struggle where racial, national, and class differences met, competed, and complicated one another. The dissertation elucidates the processes by which those women’s bodies became integral parts of Empire building during the imperial period (1894-1945), suggesting that its colonial and imperial legacies are still active even today. Unlike some preceding works on Japanese colonial literature have shown, many of these figures fall away from normative discourses of the trope of family contributing to Empire building. In other words, theirs is a politics of the perverse. With careful attention to intersections of race, sex, class, and affect, the dissertation contributes to the study of Japanese Empire, which tends to focus on men and avoids subtle readings of women’s bodies.
