By Anne Rosso College students love keg parties, don't we? Yep, we've all jumped at an opportunity to crowd around kegs of cheap beer, desperately thrusting plastic cups toward the person who just might be holding the nozzle ... hoping, nay, praying to ruthlessly jam ourselves in front of the guy preventing our consumption of those 16 ounces of stale, possibly even warm, Busch Light. These are the parties we came to college for, right? This is what all the cool kids are doing, isn't it? A growing number of Iowa State students say no. Shunning the traditional malt-liquor orgies that have come to typify college life, these renegade students seek the enlightenment and sophistication found only in one beverage-the cocktail. But, to be honest, the allure of a few martinis (shaken, not stirred) isn't the only draw. Cocktails embody a way of life, a culture all their own.With cocktails come ultra smooth, xylophone-punctuated lounge music, long cigarettes, smarmy suits and sleek, retro dresses. -

Despite their close economic relationship since 1965, their conflicting historic and political relationships and deep-seated prejudice against each other have continued. The Korean government’s official ban on the direct import of Japanese cultural products existed until 1997, but various kinds of Japanese cultural products, including popular music, found their way into Korea through various legal and illegal routes and influenced contemporary Korean popular culture. Since 1998, under Korea’s Open- Door Policy, legally available Japanese popular cultural products became widely consumed, especially among young Koreans fascinated by Japan’s quintessentially postmodern popular culture, despite lingering resentments towards Japan. -

NYC-based Japanese singer, songwriter, and guitarist Kana Uemura is known for her J-pop hits, including the 2010 song “Goddess of the Bathroom” that reached number one on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 and Oricon Charts. She will perform a mix of J-Pop (Japanese pop music) and American Pop music including her original songs in both Japanese and English. Listeners of all ages from Japanese and American audiences alike have enjoyed her music. Her special appearance and performance is part of the Embassy of Japan’s cultural offerings during the National Cherry Blossom Festival. The first chapter provides a brief history of Japan’s consumer-oriented society, beginning with the Meiji Restoration and continuing to the 21st Century. A literature review of critical works on Murakami’s fiction, especially those on themes of identity and consumerism, makes up the second chapter. Finally, the third chapter introduces three of Murakami Haruki’s short stories.
