Cole earned his BS in chemistry from the University of Minnesota in 1954 and his PhD from Caltech in 1958 under Don Yost, on magnetic resonance. The following year he moved to the Ford Scientific Research Laboratory, in Dearborn, Michigan, where he rose to head the departments of chemistry and chemical engineering. In 1980 he joined JPL’s Energy & Technology Applications branch; in 1982 he became JPL’s chief technologist, and he was instrumental in establishing JPL’s Microdevices Laboratory and its Center for Space Microelectronic Technology. Caughey was born and educated in Scotland (bachelor's degree, University of Glasgow, 1948.) It has been quite a year, but our department has re- mained strong and devoted to both our students and our research programs. We’ve had a newsletter for a number of years, but this year we decided to spruce it up a bit and give all these hardworking faculty, staff, and students a nice record of the past year’s accom- plishements. Going foward, we will be releasing the newsletter in the fall of each year. So, enjoy this issue, and look forward to another in a few months. PHYSICS CLUB REMAINS VIBRANT, WINS AWARDS The CCNY Physics Club bustles with activity whether students are meeting face-to-face on campus, or associat- ing virtually abiding COVID-19 guidelines, and garners awards for their exemplary education and outreach activi- ties. I was born in Taceva, a small town in the Carpathian mountains, in an area which was at that time part of Czechoslovakia, on the border of Romania and about a hundred kilometers from Poland. That was in 1930, and the town then had a population of about ten thousand people, a small town, but fairly advanced.
