The cartoons are about Peabody, who is the smartest being in existence, having graduated from Harvard at age 3 "Wagna cum Laude". Peabody has accomplished many things in his life as a business magnateinventor, scientist, Nobel laureategourmandand two-time Olympic medalist. In an alley, he meets Sherman voiced by Walter Tetleya bespectacled, red-haired boy. After saving Sherman from a Mr. Peabody & Sherman Junior Novelization of bullies, Peabody discovers that Sherman is an orphan and decides to adopt him. After a court appearance and a talk with the President and the government, Peabody becomes Sherman's new guardian. Peabody tells Sherman not to call him "Daddy" and to call him by his name, "Mr. Peabody", or, when speaking informally, "Peabody". He and Sherman go back in time to see a Roman speaking in Latin; Peabody adds a translator circuit to the machine so that everyone seems to speak English. They see the Roman again and learn that he is a used-chariot salesman. Their next trip is to see Ben Franklin Mr. Peabody & Sherman Junior Novelization his kite that proved lightning was electricity, but Peabody and Sherman discover that they cannot interact with the past. Peabody makes some more adjustments, turning the WayBac into a "should-have-been Mr. Peabody & Sherman Junior Novelization. This causes past events to seem distorted and anachronistic and famous people to behave out of character. Each of the cartoons usually ends with Mr. Peabody making a bad pun. Peabody's face and voice caricature were modeled after Clifton Webbwhose role as Mr. Belvedere is a similarly pompous, authoritarian, know-it-all character. It finally had an official release on March 7, The film focused much more on Mr. Peabody and Sherman's personal lives that prompt a series of time-traveling mishaps with the WABAC machineforcing the pair to put things on track before the space-time continuum is irreparably destroyed. Unlike the show, Mr. Peabody treats Sherman as a beloved son, whom he adopted as an infant rather than a pet and assistant, and the machine is more futuristic with an autonomous aircraft function. Also, a third member of the team is introduced, Penny, who is Sherman's rival and later, best friend and love interest. Peabody is a gifted anthropomorphic dog who lives in a penthouse in New York City and raises his adopted human son, 7-year-old Sherman, and tutors him traveling throughout history using the WABACpronounced "way back", a time machine. Getting caught in the Reign of TerrorPeabody is nearly sent to the guillotine to be executed by Maximilien Robespierrebut escapes with Sherman through the Paris sewers. In the present day, Sherman attends the Susan B. Peabody is called in by Principal Purdy as Sherman had bitten Penny in self-defense, and also confronted by Ms. Grunion, a Child Protective Services agent, who suspects that Sherman's behavior is due to being raised by a dog and plans to visit to Mr. Peabody & Sherman Junior Novelization home to investigate whether or not he is an unfit parent. Peabody invites Penny and her parents, Paul and Patty, over for dinner to reconcile before Ms. Grunion arrives. Penny calls Sherman a liar for claiming first-hand knowledge of history. Sherman returns to get Peabody's help. Peabody hypnotizes the Petersons and heads to Egypt to stop the wedding. Penny and Sherman explore da Vinci's attic and find his flying machine. Penny goads Sherman into flying it, which he manages to do before crashing. Da Vinci is thrilled the device works, but Peabody is upset that Sherman was almost killed, while also Mr. Peabody & Sherman Junior Novelization destroyed a historical artifact. When they resume their journey, Sherman learns of Ms. As they feud, a black hole in time forces them into an emergency landing during the Trojan War in BCE. Upset about Peabody not trusting him, Sherman runs away and joins the army of King Agamemnon in the Trojan Horsebut reconciles with him during the Mr. Peabody & Sherman Junior Novelization. During the final parts of the Trojan War, Penny and Sherman are trapped inside the Horse as it rolls towards a ravine. Peabody saves them but presumably dies during the attempt. Believing Peabody to be dead, Sherman breaks down in tears over his apparent death while Penny comforts him. Feeling bad for his actions, Sherman decides to go home and pilots the WABAC to a few minutes before they left in the present to get Mr. As Sherman and Penny try to explain the situation, Sherman's earlier self shows up. When Grunion arrives, Peabody tries to conceal from the Petersons the presence of two Shermans; but the second Peabody arrives back from Ancient Troycomplicating the situation. Troy Peabody reveals he survived the crash, much to Sherman's relief. Grunion attempts to collect both Shermans, but they and the Peabodys merge back together, causing a massive cosmic shockwave. Grunion grabs Sherman to take him Mr. Peabody & Sherman Junior Novelization for good, to which an enraged Peabody reverts to his natural dog instincts and furiously bites Grunion in retaliation, who Mr. Peabody & Sherman Junior Novelization calls the New York Police Department. Peabody, Penny, and Sherman race to the WABAC, but cannot time-travel due to a rip in the space-time continuum caused by the merger of their cosmic doubles. The collision caused a portal to appear above New York and historic objects and figures rain down everywhere in the city. Historical figures and police officers quickly surround them, while Grunion calls in animal control to arrest Peabody. Sherman explains that everything was his fault, but Grunion contends that it is all because a dog cannot raise a boy. Sherman counters Grunion by saying that if being a dog means being as loving and loyal as Peabody is, then he is proud to be a dog, too. Penny, her parents, the historical figures, and others all make the same pledge. When larger objects such as the Sphinxthe RMS Titanic and the Florence Cathedral begin falling through the rip, the people of the present and the past are forced to brainstorm ideas to prevent disaster. The historical figures are dragged back to their respective times, with Agamemnon abducting Grunion back to his own time as she vows revenge on Peabody. Sherman returns to school, having become great friends with Penny. History, meanwhile, is contaminated with modern traits, with Tut throwing a New York-themed party, da Vinci and del Giocondo pioneering pop art, Washington and Benjamin Franklin competing over the value of the banknotes with their respective faces on them, Mr. Peabody & Sherman Junior Novelization Einstein going into a rage upon being unable to solve a Rubik's CubeRobespierre failing to use a taser properly, and Grunion and Agamemnon getting married in the Trojan Horse by Odysseus.

wearer the smartest person in the world. Boris and Natasha hatched “fiendish plots” to “get Moose and Squirrel.” Other parts of the show included “Fractured Fairy Tales,” narrated by Edward Everett Horton, “Aesop and Son,” and “Peabody’s Improbable History,” where genius dog Mr. Peabody visited historical figures with his boy Sherman. After two seasons, NBC picked up the series, expanded with new segments, especially “Dudley Do-Right,” a send-up of old-time melodrama, complete with Snidely Whiplash in black cape. The retitled Bullwinkle Show (see entry) hit prime time Sunday evening, September 24, 1961, as the lead-in to Disney’s Wonderful World of Color, which had also been raided from ABC. Bullwinkle was NBC’s entry in the prime-time animation derby started by The Flintstones, but it lasted only one season. NBC moved it to Sunday after- noons in 1962, then Saturday mornings. It returned to ABC in 1964, to be broadcast Sunday mornings until 1972, then went into syndication. Continued interest in the characters prompted the 2000 release of the feature-length film The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle. Ward produced two other cartoon series for ABC. The Adventures of Hoppity Hooper, in 1964, teamed a young frog with Fillmore Bear and Waldo Wigglesworth, a fox who ran a medicine show and various get-rich-quick schemes. George of the Jungle hit in 1967. The dim-witted Tarzan takeoff was supported by “Super Chicken” and race car driver “Tom Slick.” Ward starred Bullwinkle in a series of Cheerios commercials, and later designed Cap’n Crunch for Quaker Oats, producing their commercials for several years.

‘TOON IN, ‘TOON OUT: AMERICAN TELEVISION ANIMATION AND THE SHAPING OF AMERICAN POPULAR CULTURE, 1948-1980 by David Perlmutter A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies of The University of Manitoba in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of MASTER OF ARTS Joint Master’s Program – Departments of History The University of Manitoba / The University of Winnipeg Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Copyright © 2010 by David Perlmutter ii ABSTRACT This thesis is a systematic study of significant American television animation programs produced between 1948 and 1980, with special attention given to selected works produced by three influential studios: Hanna-Barbera, Jay Ward and Filmation. It considers how outside forces such as television network censorship, grassroots political activism, and other social and political forces served to limit how the genre developed, and the extent to which producers chose to test the limits to get their points across. It provides a discussion of masculine images in television animation of the 1950s and 1960s, and of the reactions of television animation producers to outside concerns regarding violent imagery in children’s programming, and the threat of censorship related to this, in the 1970s. My thesis demonstrates that television animation producers, as a result of the need to remain actively involved in production, were forced to change and adapt with the times around them. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank my family and friends for supporting me through this endeavor. I have appreciated their support especially in those times when I doubted my abilities, because they never did. I particularly want to thank Professor Churchill and Professor Elvins for giving me their advice and guidance in the long and arduous process of conceiving the draft.

  • Festschrift Honoring Rick Rashid on His 60Th Birthday
estschrift for Rick Rashid F on his 60th birthday Rich Draves Pamela Ash 9 March 2012 Dan Hart illustration for School of Computer Science, © 2009 Carnegie Mellon University, used with permission. INTRODUCTION RICH DRAVES ou’re holding a Festschrift honoring Rick Rashid on his 60th birthday. You may well ask, “What is a Festschrift?” According to Wikipedia, a Festschrift “is a book Y honoring a respected person, especially an academic, and presented during his or her lifetime.” The Festschrift idea dates back to August 2011, when a group of friends and colleagues suddenly realized that Rick’s 60th birthday was rapidly approaching. In our defense, I can only point to Rick’s youthful appearance and personality. Peter Lee suggested that we organize a Festschrift. The idea was foreign, but everyone immediately recognized that it was the right way to honor Rick. The only problem was timing. Fortunately, this is a common problem and the belated Festschrift is somewhat traditional. We set a goal of holding a colloquium on March 9, 2012 (in conjunction with Microsoft Research’s annual TechFest) and producing a volume by September 2012, within a year of Rick’s birthday. This volume has content similar to the colloquium, but some authors made a different written contribution. The DVD in the back of the book contains a recording of the colloquium. I want to emphasize that we’re celebrating Rick’s career and accomplishments to date but we are also looking forward to many more great things to come. In other words, we need not fear his retirement.

But, the American imagination of Russians continues to be informed by the Cold War framework. Hollywood movies, in particular, played a crucial role in shaping the public perception of the Soviet Union as an existential threat to the western way of life. Take for instance the film Rocky IV from 1985, which was ostensibly a narrative about the victory of America over the Soviet Union, represented through US boxer Rocky Balboa’s win against a Soviet boxer Ivan Drago. Rocky IV was not an exception. Throughout the Cold War, Russians frequently appeared as villains in many Hollywood movies, who were in the end always defeated by the good American heroes.
