Renowned especially for his local interest reporting, Story served as correspondent, reporter and anchor for radio and television news from the 1940s to the 1980s, and was a prolific lecturer on the media and California history. Young Research Library, University of California, Los Angeles. Biography/History Ralph Story (August 19, 1920 - September 26, 2006) was born Ralph Bernard Snyder in Kalamazoo, Michigan. In high school and at Western Michigan College, he worked part time as a radio announcer, and eventually left college to pursue a career in radio full time first in Grand Rapids, Michigan and then Buffalo, New York. His career was interrupted when he joined the Air Force during World War II. Already a licensed pilot, he served first as a flight instructor and then flew 63 missions over Europe as a P-51 fighter pilot. After the war, he returned to Buffalo to work as an announcer and program director for CBS radio affiliate WGR. In 1948, CBS radio transferred him to Los Angeles. There, he served as program director and morning DJ at KNX and changed his name to Ralph Story. While at KNX, the Military Air Transport Service invited Story to visit and interview for broadcast servicemen and civilians from California stationed around the world. The result was California Around the World, broadcast on CBS radio. After a brief stint as host of the game show What Do You Have in Common?, Story moved to New York City to emcee The $64,000 Challenge from 1956-1958, when it was cancelled in the wake of the quiz show scandal. Story returned to Los Angeles and for the next forty years hosted, wrote and produced for radio and television, exploring and shaping such formats as talk radio, news broadcasting, human interest and local color reporting, and the magazine show. The bulk of his broadcast career was spent at KNX radio and its sister television station KNXT, both CBS affiliates. However, Story also worked for KABC, KNBC, KCET, KCAL, and independent production companies including National General and O'Connor radio. In addition to his serialized weekly and daily programs and radio spots, Story hosted a variety of special programs, including prime-time specials, award ceremonies, and local events such as the Tournament of Roses Parade and Hollywood Bowl concerts. He was also a prolific producer, writer and lecturer on local and California history, and prepared but did not publish a guidebook to Los Angeles. Story was active in civic and professional groups, hosting celebrity tennis events and Ralph Story papers, 1940-2007 867 2 serving as grand marshal for numerous local festivals and functions. He was a fundraiser for Public Television stations KCET and KOCE and a frequent speaker at community and educational meetings. Story is best remembered for his detailed research and his wry and witty observations about life in California and especially in Los Angeles. Television work includes: the "Human Predicament" on KNXT's The Big News, Ralph Story's Los Angeles, Ralph Story's AM, The Channel 2 News, It's a Nice Place..., The Sunday Show, On the Road Again, The Wine Game, Things That Aren't Here Anymore and More Things That Aren't Here Anymore. Story's radio titles include: The Ralph Story Show, Top of the Morning, Storyline, Hollywood Today, Dimension in Hollywood, Meet the Cook, Food News, You're the Judge and an annual Christmas Morning special. In 1984, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences awarded Story their highest honor, the Governors Award. Other awards Story received throughout his career include numerous Los Angeles Area Emmys and Golden Mikes, two Directors Guild of America Awards, and many local and professional honors. Ralph Story died on September 26, 2006 after a long battle with emphysema at the age of 86 in Los Angeles, California. Scope and Content This collection documents the activities of Ralph Story, a broadcast journalist and television host. An original donation of 208 scripts for Ralph Story's Los Angeles was supplemented in 2008 with approximately 40 more scripts from Ralph Story's Los Angeles, and scripts, research and production materials spanning Story's career. The bulk of the collection consists of broadcast scripts, clippings, contracts, correspondence, financial and legal material, production records, photographs, research material, draft chapters of a guidebook, miscellaneous printed matter and ephemera. Program examples include: news special reports, national presidential addresses and press conferences, local presidential events, guest interviews of administration officials, appearances of Ford family members, and the 1976 Republican Convention and Ford-Carter debates. Editor’s Ravings – this month’s editor, Mick Burton Scary is as scary does. How eerily coincident that the latest issue of the IPMS/USA Journal showed up this week in my home mail, with lead editorial by Styrene Sheet Alumnus Chris Bucholtz including material which now informs my own effort here! Chris reflects on reasons not entirely obvious to many looking solely on as consumers of the Journal, as to why coverage of the recent USA Nationals in Columbus was not the main thrust of this Journal issue which does follow about two months after event occurred. Time and energy management dealing with the sheer volume of finished yet actually raw material. With a desire to produce a product of coverage at least equal in quality to that of the items in focus (namely the very lovely works in miniature and competition) Being delivered by folks who have far too much going on in their lives yet do this work too. Having been one of the crew members in the Judging and the Photography teams thus a witness to the truly monumental shoe horning of much quality effort into a tiny amount of time to deliver results, I know first hand what he was writing about. This month’s Sheet was on my responsibility roster when I left for Columbus. Seemed at the time a far away and far easier effort than it ended up, a reminder of how quickly many ever so small projects can suddenly add up to massive time/energy monsters hungry for more of both when you no longer have a bit of either to spare.

Shaffer, Graduate School Representative ABSTRACT TALES FROM THE SILENT MAJORITY: CONSERVATIVE POPULISM AND THE INVENTION OF MIDDLE AMERICA by Jeffrey Christopher Bickerstaff In this dissertation I show how the conservative movement lured the white working class out of the Democratic New Deal Coalition and into the Republican Majority. I argue that this political transformation was accomplished in part by what I call the "invention" of Middle America. Using such cultural representations as mainstream print media, literature, and film, conservatives successfully exploited what came to be known as the Social Issue and constructed "Liberalism" as effeminate, impractical, and elitist. Chapter One charts the rise of conservative populism and Middle America against the backdrop of 1960s social upheaval. I stress the importance of backlash and resentment to Richard Nixon's ascendancy to the Presidency, describe strategies employed by the conservative movement to win majority status for the GOP, and explore the conflict between this goal and the will to ideological purity. In Chapter Two I read Rabbit Redux as John Updike's attempt to model the racial education of a conservative Middle American, Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom, in "teach-in" scenes that reflect the conflict between the social conservative and Eastern Liberal within the author's psyche. I conclude that this conflict undermines the project and, despite laudable intentions, Updike perpetuates caricatures of the Left and hastens Middle America's rejection of Liberalism.

    Verizon channel lineup custom tv Continue By the mid-1960s, the participants in the traditional street scene had broken away in many directions. Some custom enthusiasts have switched to muscle cars and drag racing. Two original custom car architects, George Barris and Dean Jeffries, have been dragged into the World of Hollywood to create custom cars for television. When 20th Century-Fox and Batman producer William Dozier needed a Batmobile in 1965 (the pilot episode was supposed to premiere on ABC in January 1966), his first call went to Jeffreys, who began working on the 1959 caddy. Jeffries had to bow when he realized he couldn't meet Dozier's three-week term. Advertising custom car image Gallery Barris subsequently took the job, probably because he already owned the 1955 Lincoln Futura, a bubble-canopy concept car that Barris saved from a Ford crusher a few years ago by handing over one dollar. With a suitably low, wide chassis, as well as burning fins, a wide-mouthed grille, and a swoopy body line already in place, Futura was the Platform Barris needed to quickly deliver an outlandish, photogenic TV custom car that lived up to the manufacturer's expectations. Inside, the Futura Dash has been modified only slightly to accommodate prop gadgets such as Bat Phone, Discover-a-Scope, and Extraordinary Bat-Turn Lever. Claims about the number of Barris Batmobiles vary. Barris' crew pulled fiberglass molds from the original car to make duplicates for car show tours. Chances are four or five were made, including a drag-race race exhibition car.

Griffith Dear Mr. Mundy, Friends of Griffith Park, the advocacy group for all of Griffith Park, has carefully reviewed the Los Angeles Zoo Vision Plan Project Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) released in December 2020. We have numerous concerns regarding the scope of the proposed project and the loss of Open Space that would result. Loss of Open Space / Connectivity The Zoo, although an independent city department, is located entirely within the boundaries of Griffith Park. It is not “zoo property” as claimed in several places throughout the DEIR. Friends deplores the DEIR’s description of open space as “underutilized and underdeveloped areas” (ES-3 and 2-30). Our Indigenous populations tread lightly on the land and had great respect and reverence for the native habitat; they did not consider it “underutilized.” Griffith J. Griffith, who donated the land to the city for a park, certainly knew the value of open space and nature. (Above quote) Los Angeles County designated Griffith Park a Significant Ecological Area (SEA) forming “an extensive, relatively undisturbed island of natural vegetation in an urbanized, metropolitan area.” This Open Space currently provides invaluable habitat for the native flora and fauna that call Griffith Park home.
