During lockdown, a brave chicken wandered into my sister’s garden in KZN. Needless to say, it became a permanent resident even joining their pet Staffy in roaming the house and sleeping in his doggie bed. The chicken, who was lovingly named Pepsi by my niece, soon laid a serious of eggs each ending in disastrous circumstances. The first one was munched up the Staffy. Another one was squished by my niece who was trying to get it to hatch. And a few eggs had a slightly more pleasant end in a delicious chocolate cake. However, none of them emerged as baby chickens.

This brought to mind a saying I read a while back that really resonated with me.

“If an egg is broken by an outside force, life ends. If it is broken by an inside force, life begins.”

You see, our lives are much like these unhatched eggs. We can allow our situation and our circumstances to trample and consume us, destroying our sense of self and hope in a future. 2020 has been a difficult year by most accounts but it only has the power to crush us if we allow our

emotions and faith to be trampled by it. Eggs need a temperature of between 37 and 39 degrees Celsius to develop and this heat needs to be consistent. We need to use that heat and tumultuous environment to help us grow. In order for us to emerge, we need to endure some hot situations and not allow life to devour us, we need to harness the heat of the pressure of our circumstances and hatch as people we are proud of.

However, there is yet another reason why chicks don’t emerge from eggs. They don’t use their beaks to break the shell because it is comfortable inside the eggs where the dangers of swooping owls are kept at bay.

We need to understand that sometimes remaining too comfortable and LEADERSHI LEADERSHI not breaking the shell that for many years protected us, can destroy us. That shell can be symbolic of fixed mindsets or traditions we refuse to let go off. Sometimes we stick the familiar few who help us not confront our weaknesses. Sometimes the shell is symbolic of our silence. It takes courage to speak as there is often safety in our silence. P AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY P AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY We need to be brave. Brave to emerge from a comfortable home and brave enough to not allow the world to destroy you.

This year the councillor group started their year with many plans and so many, did not come to pass. However, they held their head high and persevered. In term one, we had a week of love where we showed appreciation for those we care about. In term two, we organised a protest to show our support for the Black Lives Matter Movement. We also highlighted that gender based violence remains what President Ramaphosa termed the ‘second pandemic’. In term three we saw the election of our new councillors who have compiled some great ideas and initiatives for 2021.

My final thought is simple: emerge knowing that great things always begin from the inside.

Ms J Judge Head of Leadership 10 11 VISION • STRIVING TO MAXIMISE EACH PUPIL’S POTENTIAL AFRIKAANS VISION • MAKING OUR CURRICULUM RELEVANT TO THE REAL WORLD The challenges that this year brought will not be easily forgotten. The 2020 matrics could not watch the live performance of their literature and had to watch a recording of it. Asem was more of a visual and listening exercise than it was meant to be. In the other grades many exciting and new teaching methods were used to keep the students focused and attentive on the other side of a screen. When we were back in the classroom, we were faced with yet another new challenge. Not only was it difficult to recognise the faces hidden behind masks, but we all had to listen very carefully to where the muffled voices came from and what was said.

I want to thank every special member of the Afrikaans department for all the assistance and technical support offered to get the lessons uploaded, shared, recorded and delivered on time. We also welcomed Mrs Desmet to our department and we wish her a long and happy stay at the school. We congratulate every one of our pupils for their tenacity throughout this unusual year and we look forward to an even more exciting 2021.

The Accounting department has had some fun-filled experiences this year. The grade 11 and 12 Accounting students took a trip to the Sanofi pharmaceutical COMMERCIAL manufacturing plant in Waltloo at the start of term 1, where they were able to witness the entire manufacturing and packaging process. The students were also briefed on all the financial and managerial aspects that go into SUBJECTS production by the Sanofi staff. They ended off the day visiting DSV, the most automated distributions warehouse in South Africa, and one of the top 10 in the world.

In the third term the grade 11 Accounting students ran their own production line of toy airplanes in order to learn the financial acumen related to the manufacturing process, and all the items linked to the production process.

The grade 10 Accounting students have also enjoyed a different approach to learning about critical thinking in business, by doing a film study on the documentary about the growth of the McDonald’s empire, The Founder.

Online lessons were conducted during the lockdown period with great success. AND EGD On returning to school for the third term, learners were exposed to the Arduino Uno board with the ATMega chip. Learners physically connected LEDs and resistors to the Arduino and wrote code on the Arduino web editor. This was downloaded to the Arduino boards and learners were thrilled to see the code that was written, transform itself into physical LEDs blinking or police lights flashing.

2021 is set to be a more exciting year as more Arduino programming will take place with learners designing and creating code for a hand sanitiser using the Arduino Uno.

Learners in EGD will design the shell for the hand sanitiser and components for this will be built using the 3D printers available in the technology room and the computer centres.

This year started with my move to a new classroom at the Equestrian Academy and what a wonderful opportunity this has been for our Equine Students. Now all the Beaulieu equine resources are in a single facility and together, Yvonne Bolton and I watch and guide our students. We are also in the process of upgrading our stables and tack room in order to make them more “teaching friendly”.

As we began to prepare our biggest group of matric students for their final year we went to visit various yards and lunged

and rode unknown horses. Our grade 10s had similar experiences including lunging lessons at the SA Lipizzaner Centre and EQUINE STUDIES riding in practical coaching assessments. Then times changed and we moved to online school. New ways of teaching were

used and being riders, some of our lessons even ended up being done whilst on the back of a horse! GEOGRAPHY

However, although our practical learning was interrupted most students were able to keep up their riding from home and when we did come back to school we were quickly able to go back to making the most of the facilities at the school and practise some riding on Flag and Alexa. Our enterprising grade 8s even rode their horses to school one day for a day visit which was enjoyed by all. As Flag and Alexa plan for their December African Horse Sickness holiday we look forward to what next year will bring knowing that despite a huge hurdle, our students have done well this year and continue to show their resilience.

Mrs K Hughes 18 19 VISION • MAKING OUR CURRICULUM RELEVANT TO THE REAL WORLD HISTORY VISION • MAKING OUR CURRICULUM RELEVANT TO THE REAL WORLD

History is made every year and this year was no exception. As a department, we could draw comparisons with epidemics of the past. The two big ones for me were the 1348-9 Bubonic Plague and the 1918-1921 Spanish Flu pandemic. It is so interesting as a historian to now be part of another world event with seismic repercussions. As a dedicated medievalist, I found it easiest to relate to the 1348 plague. Apart from the fact that we are all wearing less interesting fashion now, there was very little difference for me! Our department continued to deliver engaging lessons and assess our students remotely. We missed sharing our passion face to face! We have not been able to go on any of our usual excursions, but we did manage to still include the living history experiments we do every year in our attempts to bring the past alive: dancing, eating and music being a common focus. We hope we continue to develop our students as well rounded individuals that see themselves as part of the process of human development and progress. I would like to thank our students for their keen interest as always, and Mr Goldsmid for all his support and hard work.

From getting to know one another and resolving conflict in grade 8, to learning about human rights in grade 9, to setting goals and designing CVs in grade 10 to conducting research on admission requirements to university in grade 11, the pupils at Beaulieu College were fully involved in the content being covered at the beginning of the year. When lockdown interrupted our face to face interactions, the pupils and teachers continued online and found creative ways in which to hold discussions and complete assignments, without compromising the integrity of the subject.

The grade 12 group coped well under the academic pressures required for their portfolios and did not allow lockdown to affect the quality of work that they had to complete for their portfolios. The results produced by the matrics this year have been phenomenal with 42% of the matrics achieving a distinction. Congratulations to Michelle King for achieving 97% - the highest mark in Life Orientation to date. The Life Orientation department is very proud of these results and sincerely hope that the 2021 group will face their matric year with the same determination.

Thanks must be extended to Ms Naicker for teaching the grade 10s this year. Her calm manner and knowledge of the content has been well received by the grade 10s. She will be leaving the LO department next year to join the Science Department full time.

22 23 VISION • MAKING OUR CURRICULUM RELEVANT TO THE REAL WORLD LIFE SCIENCES PHYSICAL VISION • MAKING OUR CURRICULUM RELEVANT TO THE REAL WORLD SCIENCE

During 2020 the Science department managed to continue our practical approach. The grade 12 students completed their Practical Investigations at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership academy for girls during the first term. We are expecting great results from this group as they showed dedication and remained positive when their learning moved online.

The department came up with many creative ways of showing the students the experiments relevant to their lessons as many parents probably had to witness during the lockdown period. Pressure Circuses, hydrogen balloons exploding and rates of reactions all had to be recorded and shared with the students having to make sense of it all from home. This was done in such a professional way that other schools asked to share our material; the science department and students can be really proud of their efforts.

Beaulieu College took part in the science essay competition hosted by the Royal Society of South Africa again this year. Our grade 9 and 10 learners compete against learners from all graded across the country. This year’s group did exceptionally well and Ms Naicker also won the “Avid Educator” prize for guiding the students in the finer techniques of writing scientific essays. The following grade 10 students won prizes

in their categories:

The first prize for the essay topic “South Africa has a wealth of medicinal plants - How should the government and research scientists balance the need to develop new medicines with the need to protect these resources?” was won by Motheo Maitin. Erin Pullinger won the third prize for her essay on the topic “Is there scientific evidence to support (or refute) Greta Thunberg’s assertion that humanity is facing a climate-induced emergency?” Kathato Motsisi has won the third prize for the essay on the The year started off well with all grades being introduced to new skills or practicing ones started in previous years. On many topic “Have social media platforms (such as Youtube, Facebook, occasions I have said that Life Sciences is a living, growing and ever-changing subject, and this was quickly discovered in Instagram) benefited science and society?” novel ways when teaching and learning suddenly switched to being online. The task of making topics such as circulation, Mrs K van Schoor ecology, plant tissues and many others come alive on a computer screen took some serious imagination and new found skills on the part of us as teachers, and as pupils attending lessons from home. In the end, we are proud of what our pupils have achieved and look forward to continue building their understanding and application of all things biological next year. This year has most certainly reminded us of the looming microscopic world out there and how it could affect our lives at any time.

The matrics produced research assignments of exceptional quality which they added to their portfolios, and they finished off

the year with a confident attitude of having survived an interesting and very different year. I am sure that they never thought

they would actually live through a pandemic, which they learnt about when studying microorganisms in grade 11. PHY

L Although we were unable to take each grade on their annual outing, opportunities were provided for them to engage with SICAL SCIENCE IFE SCIENCES the biological world online and in the classroom when we returned to school. I am sure that many of us now appreciate the joy of being in nature for the sake of it, after being confined to our homes for many months. The section on ecology that was covered with most of the grades was also a reminder of how important the natural world around us is, now and in the future.

Mrs Page joined the department this year, and quickly became a firm favourite with many of her pupils, with her expansive knowledge and expertise in the subject. We look forward to many years of being guided by her scientific vision and love for all things biological!

Mrs S Florença 24 25 VISION • MAKING OUR CURRICULUM RELEVANT TO THE REAL WORLD VISION • MAKING OUR CURRICULUM RELEVANT TO THE REAL WORLD VISUAL ART It started like any other normal year, new expectations, new goals, new things to look forward to. A highlight was a visit to a dance performance in the Mandela theatre during our grade 9 choice group excursion in March, offered as part of the Festival of Fame. We were quite unaware then of how quickly everything would change.

Term 1 wasn’t even done, then lockdown engulfed us like a dark cloud. It wiped out a lot of things that we were used to. The only option was to adapt. Van Gogh famously said, during a very dark time in his life, that he thought that the night was much more alive and more richly coloured than Ndikho Sili the day. This clearly held a message of hope, although our new circumstances hit the matrics most of all. Maybe the most important lesson learnt this year was to do as much as you can while you can, because you never know what tomorrow may bring. Despite various difficulties the matrics finished the work of the year, thanks to extended IEB deadlines. Online practical work was a most difficult Jemma Mills challenge! But thankfully some light at the end of the tunnel finally came, which brought a more hands-on experience and a wider variety of media and processes like we have done in the good old days. Technology may be fabulous, but nothing compares to real life teaching. May 2021 be

better – enriched with what we have learnt this year.

We had great fun and sang many songs. Choir camp is one where relaxation and singing is high on the agenda. We are thankful for this camp, as who would know that not short of two months later we would not have the opportunity to sing together for a few months. Towards the end of the lockdown, many online singing sessions started and this was enjoyed by all.

According to James Brown, dancing is the one thing that can solve most of our problems. This is so true for the evening of the 19th February. DANCING The dancers entertained the audience with their spectacular moves. With the continued support from the audience, the dancers grew in confidence with every step. The evening proved to bring one’s emotions to the fore, as the dancers transformed and lived out the theme, Metamorphosis. It was evident that dance is the very oxygen for each of these dancers. Lipizzaner performed an emotional dance piece placing them first. Percheron was second, Mustang third and Cleveland fourth. MARIMBAS We are so blessed to have purchased more marimbas this year. We have an awesome marimbas group and we have had the opportunity to take part in the virtual marimbas festival. We entered four items and look forward to the results.

In term 1, a week before lockdown started DRAMA the cast and crew of The Wizard of Oz had been hard at work to create the “land heard of once in a lullaby”. The students were dedicated to honing their skills not only as performers but also as dancers and singers. With the help of Mary-Anne Wright, our choreographer, we were able to expose the students to exciting choreography. In addition to the acting, choreography and singing, the set and costumes brought the whole play together and truly transported the audience into the Land of Oz. We were very excited to present this wonderful musical and we were glad that we were able to add to our 20th Anniversary celebrations while showing how far the Drama Co-curricular has come over the past 20 years. Unfortunately, The Wizard of Oz was the last “hoorah” for Drama this year. FEDA was cancelled and we were unable to show the amazing story that was RISE, the winner of One Act Plays 2019, directed by Svarya Kesarparshad. We also had to cancel One Act Plays in term 3 but there is light at the end of the rainbow, as we will

be doing One Act Plays in term 1 2021 instead. In addition to this we hope to introduce our new approach to House Plays, which will occur during term 2.

We managed to complete an entire season before the virus struck, and what a season it was.

We endured some tough opposition and managed to come out on top more often than not. Our juniors battled through some difficult matches. While we continue to develop the skills of our rising stars, the lessons learned on the field of play were immense. We look forward to seeing some of these youngsters plying their trade in the senior side in the next couple years.

Our seniors performed exceptionally well. Our players learned that they can hold their own against some of the more traditional cricketing schools, and should not doubt their abilities. We managed to pull off some exceptional results, beating traditional cricketing schools such as St David’s 1st team, as well as schools such as Waterstone College and Redhill. Our 1st team has made a name for themselves and has been invited to the CSA T20 tournament in 2021 because of their performances. Our ranking has also improved, where we are now ranked higher than some of those ‘traditional’ cricketing schools.

Our Cricket captain, Taheer Isaacs, was also selected for the Lions Cubs team as an opening batsman and wicketkeeper. His development and skill set has seen him being awarded Gauteng player of the year, and he has performed exceptionally well for both Beaulieu and Gauteng. His leadership on the field and his ability to make top bowlers look ordinary will be sorely missed next year.

This was also the year in which Taheer planted his trees to mark his centuries scored for the 1st team. These indigenous trees have been planted close to the scoreboard, hopefully creating some shade on the far side of the field in years to come.

Special thanks must go to our scorers, who sit on the side of the field ensuring our players have an accurate representation of their performances. They spend hours concentrating on the game, and can very often provide insight as to when things went pear shaped or improved during a match. Their dedication to the sport is appreciated.

Thanks also to the ground staff, who continue to improve our facilities and the playing fields. Our pitches have become more consistent and the playing surface has improved substantially.

Finally, to our coaches, Ryan Ross, Travis Kitch, and Brett Dewar and on an ad hoc basis, Alviro Petersen: thank you for the hours put in helping our players to improve their skills, tactics and mind-set. Without your input, we would not be where we are today.

The Brand Ambassadors are a group of remarkable, selfless and tenacious students who put their all into maintaining a top standard of customer service at the school. Together we are the face of the school — the first impression prospective parents and pupils get of Beaulieu College. SIBONGINKOSI YENDE KRISTA MATSILA We work countless hours to promote and make events successful. Brand Ambassadors are behind every grade 8 Breakfast, Annual Open Day, grade 6 Open Day and New Pupil Scholarship and Entrance Examinations. These events happen because Brand Ambassadors are working tirelessly to ensure everything runs smoothly.

MASANA RIKHOTSO The Brand Ambassadors have also taken up a new, but not unimportant role of ensuring photos are taken at events and available to be put on social media. LUFUNO NESWISWI As a Brand Ambassador’s role is to present the best image of the school possible, photography plays a big role in the duties of a Brand Ambassador. The

BRAND AMBASSADORS Photography Club and Brand Ambassadors formed a mutual connection in the BRAND AMBASSADORS few months they were able to work together. I hope these groups will continue to work together to capture the liveliness and high calibre of Beaulieu College.

Given that this year would have seen Beaulieu College celebrate their 20th LEAGO LETSOALO milestone anniversary, we had a full and exciting line-up of events planned for the year ahead. Covid-19 unfortunately brought to halt all of these planned events. We are, however, optimistic for next year so you can rest assured that those innovative ideas will be shared in the future.

Our fellow ambassadors have shown passion and determination throughout their tenure and we couldn’t have asked for a better group of people to work with. The Brand Ambassadors of Beaulieu College have so much to offer and will SHIARA LUTCHMAN be able to do so much more in the future. Watch this space!
