Wrong Memory Codes? The Polish “Blue” Police and Collaboration in the Holocaust In 2016, seventy-one years after the end of World War II, the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs disseminated a long list of “wrong memory codes” (błędne kody pamięci), or expressions that “falsify the role of Poland during World War II” and that are to be reported to the nearest Polish diplomat for further action. Sadly—and not by chance—the list elaborated by the enterprising humanists at the Polish Foreign Ministry includes for the most part expressions linked to the Holocaust. On the long list of these “wrong memory codes,” which they aspire to expunge from historical narrative, one finds, among others: “Polish genocide,” “Polish war crimes,” “Polish mass murders,” “Polish internment camps,” “Polish work camps,” and—most important for the purposes of this text—“Polish participation in the Holocaust.” The issue of “wrong memory codes” will from time to time reappear in this study. -

The Kos’ciuszko Chair of Polish Studies Miller Center of Public Affairs University of Virginia Charlottesville, Virginia Bulletin Number Three Fall 2003 On the Cover: The symbol of the KoÊciuszko Squadron was designed by Lt. Elliot Chess, one of a group of Americans who helped the fledgling Polish air force defend its skies from Bolshevik invaders in 1919 and 1920. Inspired by the example of Tadeusz KoÊciuszko, who had fought for American independence, the American volunteers named their unit after the Polish and American hero. The logo shows thirteen stars and stripes for the original Thirteen Colonies, over which is KoÊciuszko’s four-cornered cap and two crossed scythes, symbolizing the peasant volunteers who, led by KoÊciuszko, fought for Polish freedom in 1794. After the Polish-Bolshevik war ended with Poland’s victory, the symbol was adopted by the Polish 111th KoÊciuszko Squadron. In September 1939, this squadron was among the first to defend Warsaw against Nazi bombers. Following the Polish defeat, the squadron was reformed in Britain in 1940 as Royal Air Force’s 303rd KoÊciuszko. This Polish unit became the highest scoring RAF squadron in the Battle of Britain, often defending London itself from Nazi raiders. The 303rd bore this logo throughout the war, becoming one of the most famous and successful squadrons in the Second World War. The title of our bulletin, Nihil Novi, invokes Poland’s ancient constitution of 1505. It declared that there would be “nothing new about us without our consent.” In essence, it drew on the popular sentiment that its American version expressed as “no taxation without representation.” The Nihil Novi constitution guar- anteed that “nothing new” would be enacted in the country without the consent of the Parliament (Sejm). -

STORIES OF POLISH RESISTANCE About half of the six million European Jews killed in the Holocaust were Polish. In 1939 a third of the capital city Warsaw, and 10% of the entire country was Jewish. By 1945 97% of Poland's Jews were dead. These eleven examples of Polish resistance do not proport to give an overview of what happened in Irena Maximilian Emanuel Mordechai Witold Poland during The Holocaust. They have been Sendler Kolbe Ringelblum Anielewicz Pilecki chosen to reflect the unimaginably difficult choices made by both Jews and non-Jews under German occupation – where every Jew was marked for death and all non-Jews who assisted their Jewish neighbours were subject to the same fate. Despite its ubiquity in the early twenty-first century, however, it was little known and understood until the late 1970s, and even today its parameters and scope are still being investigated and explored. It is among the most important series of events in recent German, European, and global history, and thus requires serious examination. It is also one of the darkest and most depressing chapters of the human experience, and will profoundly disturb and shock even the most seasoned student of history. The Good Name Redoubt The Polish League Against Defamation Poland and the Holocaust – facts and myths Summary 1. Poland was the first and one of the major victims of World War II. 2. The extermination camps, in which several million people were murdered, were not Polish. These were German camps in Poland occupied by Nazi Germany. The term “Polish death camps” is contradictory to historical facts and grossly unfair to Poland as a victim of Nazi Germany. 3. The Poles were the first to alert European and American leaders about the Holocaust. 4. Poland never collaborated with Nazi Germany. The largest resistance movement in occupied Europe was created in Poland. Moreover, in occupied Europe, Poland was one of the few countries where the Germans introduced and exercised the death penalty for helping Jews. 5. Hundreds of thousands of Poles – at the risk of their own lives – helped Jews survive the war and the Holocaust. Poles make up the largest group among the Righteous Among the Nations, i.e. citizens of various countries who saved Jews during the Holocaust. 6. As was the case in other countries during the war, there were cases of disgraceful behaviour towards Jews in occupied Poland, but this was a small minority compared to the Polish society as a whole. At the same time, there were also instances of disgraceful behaviour by Jews in relation to other Jews and to Poles. 7. During the war, pogroms of the Jewish people were observed in various European cities and were often inspired by Nazi Germans. Along with the Jews, Polish people, notably the intelligentsia and the political, socio-economic and cultural elites, were murdered on a massive scale by the Nazis and by the Soviets. -

Not All Roads Led to Hotel Polski On 18 May 1943, a transport of nearly seventy Jews to a transit camp in Vittel, France, set off. We would like to invite you to read the column by Dr Paweł Wieczorek about Hotel Polski (lit. Polish Hotel) – an internment centre for Jews on the “Aryan” side, which turned out to be the Gestapo trap. Rumours of “foreign papers” had been disseminated among Warsaw Jews long before the final liquidation of the “closed quarter” in the first half of 1943: “It was known that the holders of such documents had been separated from the rest of Jews and taken to Pawiak for safety” before the announcement of the memorable »deportation« on 22 July 1942. At the turn of December 1942 and January 1943, they were transported to Vittel. Few ghetto Jews lived to see the arrival of the documents necessary for their survival. Most of them fell victim to the murders in Treblinka. Documents proving that they had existed remained – like “dead souls”. [19;763-764. Also: 23] “Because those people had been gone” commented the case Franciszka Grunberg, “others were taken in their place.” [15;269. Also: 5;8-9] Since there were “papers”, it was appropriate to use them. It was all like a game. Perhaps initiated by Jewish collaborators, certainly with the knowledge and control of the Gestapo and probably with considerable support from Poles. Everyone had their share. They could earn considerable amount of money illegally, and the same time fully legally carry out the task imposed from the top down: to make Warsaw become Judenfrei. -

Los Justos de las Naciones1 En un mundo de debacle moral generalizada, hubo una pequeña minoría que supo desplegar un extraordinario coraje para mantener los valores humanos en pie. Ellos fueron los Justos de las Naciones, que remaron contra la corriente general de indiferencia y hostilidad que prevaleció durante el Holocausto. Contrariamente a la tendencia generalizada, estos salvadores veían a los judíos como seres humanos comunes y corrientes, incluidos dentro de su universo de obligaciones. La mayoría de los salvadores comenzaron como observadores pasivos. En muchos casos el cambio ocurría cuando eran confrontados con la deportación o la matanza de judíos. Algunos habían permanecido indiferentes en las etapas tempranas de la persecución, cuando los derechos de los judíos eran restringidos y sus propiedades confiscadas, pero llegó un punto en el que decidieron actuar, una barrera que no estaban dispuestos a cruzar. A diferencia de otros, ya no pudieron consentir con las crecientes medidas que afectaban a los judíos. En muchos casos eran los judíos los que se dirigían a los gentiles en busca de ayuda. No sólo los salvadores manifestaron ingenio y coraje, sino también los judíos luchaban por su supervivencia. Wolfgang Benz, quien realizara una exhaustiva investigación sobre el rescate de judíos durante el Holocausto, sostiene que, al escuchar las historias de salvataje, las personas rescatadas pueden ser vistas como meros objetos de cuidado y caridad. Sin embargo, “el intento de sobrevivir en la clandestinidad era, antes que nada, un acto de autoafirmación y un acto de resistencia judía contra el régimen nazi. Sólo unos pocos tuvieron éxito en dicha resistencia”.
