It encompasses both the post-war theatre archives held by the British Library, and also their post-1968 scripts collection. In addition, many oral history interviews have been carried out with visitors and theatre practitioners. The Project began at the University of Sheffield and later transferred to De Montfort University. The archive at Sheffield contains 170 CD-ROMs of interviews with theatre workers and audience members, including Glenda Jackson, Brian Rix, Susan Engel and Michael Frayn. There is also a collection of copies of correspondence between Gyorgy Lengyel and Michel and Suria Saint Denis, and between Gyorgy Lengyel and Sir John Gielgud, dating from 1958 to 1999. Landmarks Preservation Commission November 4, 1987; Designation List 194 LP-1315 MARTIN BECK THEATER, 302-314 West 45th Street, Manhattan. Built 1923-24; architect, G. Albert Lansburgh. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1035, Lot 37. On June 14 and 15, 1982, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Martin Beck Theater and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 11). The hearing was continued to October 19, 1982. Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Eighty-one witnesses spoke or had statements read into the record in favor of designation. One witness spoke in opposition to designation. The owner, with his representatives, appeared at the hearing, and indicated that he had not formulated an opinion regarding designation. The Commission has received many letters and other expressions of support in favor of this designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The Martin Beck Theater survives today as one of the historic theaters that symbo 1 ize American theater for both New York and the nation. It was bui 1 t in 1923-24 by Martin Beck, a West Coast producer who had formerly been president of the Orpheum Circuit. After building the Palace, the legendary New York vaudeville showcase, and being forced out of its management, Beck determined to build another New York theater for himself, and spent the rest of his life running it. Wanting to build as extraordinary a theater as possible, Beck brought archi teet G. Albert Lansburgh to New York from his native San Franc is co, where Lansburgh had been the Orpheum Circuit's chief architect. -

Prior to this school year students will need to prepare themselves for work comparable to college- level rigor in terms of reading, writing, and learning! To assist you with preparing for APEH, it is recommended that students do the following to prepare. Please feel free to contact me via email over the summer. Notebook and class organization – • Purchase a three-ring binder (1.5” recommended minimum), tab dividers. You will receive many handouts throughout the year, so the ability to organize them is important. • Purchase a spiral notebook (or 2) to use for taking notes from the textbook. This should be used exclusively for this purpose, not shared with any other subject. Maps: There will be a map test the first day of class. You should be able to identify the countries, major rivers and waterways, mountain ranges, and other significant features of European geography. You will be able to retake the test as often as you need to achieve the optimum grade. FALOCCO, JOE, Ph.D. Elizabethan Staging in the Twentieth Century: Theatrical Practice and Cultural Context. (2006) Directed by Russ McDonald. 433 pp. This study examines some of the major figures involved in the rediscovery of early modern staging conventions. Despite the wide variety of approaches employed by William Poel, Nugent Monck, Tyrone Guthrie, and the founders of the new Globe, I perceive a common philosophical underpinning to their endeavors. Rather than indulging in archaism for its own sake, they looked backward in a progressive attempt to address the challenges of the twentieth century. My history begins with an introduction in which I establish the ideological position of the Elizabethan revival as the twentieth-century heir to Pre-Raphaelitism. The first chapter is on William Poel and urges a reexamination of the conventional view of Poel as an antiquarian crank. I then devote chapters to Harley Granville Barker and Nugent Monck, both of whom began their careers with Poel. Barker’s critical writing, I argue, has been largely responsible for the Elizabethan revival’s reputation as an academic and literary phenomenon. Monck, on the other hand, took the first tentative steps toward an architectural reimagining of twentieth-century performance spaces, an advance which led to Tyrone Guthrie’s triumphs in Elizabethan staging. Guthrie learned from Monck and Barker as these men had learned from Poel. This lineage of influence, however, did not directly extend to the new Globe. The Globe also differs from the subjects of my other chapters because it doesn’t represent the effort of a single practitioner but instead incorporates the contributions of a group of scholars and architects. -
