  • Home Improvement Television: Holmes on Homes Makes It Right
Home Improvement Television: Holmes on Homes Makes It Right Jean Bruce Ryerson University Abstract: Holmes on Homes is a Canadian home improvement television program and the centrepiece of HGTV (Home and Garden Television), featuring Mike Holmes as the series’ star contractor and host. This paper argues that by looking back at earlier incarnations of film and television melodrama, we can determine the way in which Holmes on Homes reinvents the home improvement subgenre. By playing out reality TV’s central tension between fiction and non-fiction, Holmes on Homes reveals its larger themes of justice and redemption, which befit its unique position between the documentary and the classic melodrama. Mots clés : Téléréalité; Holmes on Homes; Télévision sur l’amélioration du foyer; Télévision documentaire; Mélodrame classique Introduction When specialty network Home and Garden Television (HGTV) Canada applied for its broadcasting licence in 1996, the “nature of the service” it would provide was described as follows: The licensee will offer a 24-hour-a-day specialty service devoted to pro- gramming that presents practical, hands-on advice and instruction about homes and gardens.

The three HGTV Canada personalities are teaming up on season one of Canada's Handyman Challenge. THE CANADIAN PRESS/ HO, HGTV Canada TORONTO - Mike Holmes never wanted to be on television. The straight-talking builder had worked as a contractor for decades before he wound up filling in behind the scenes on an HGTV Canada show. While in a network executive's office one day, Holmes http://www.theprovince.com/story_print.html?id=10139790&sponsor=AIDA[15/09/2014 2:48:57 PM] How HGTV Canada built a specialty powerhouse and a global following — a passionate defender of practical home-building — gave him a piece of his mind. "I said, 'You know what, I watch the shows on your channel and this is poor information that I'm seeing. I'm sick and tired of seeing people getting screwed and fixing crap that doesn't make sense,'" recalled Holmes. "He stood up and said, 'I want a pilot right away.'" Now, Holmes's no-nonsense style is at the heart of HGTV Canada's success. The network has built a specialty powerhouse based on authentic Canadians — generally choosing real experts over slick personalities — and offering a reliable stable of home-improvement and house-hunting shows.

  • Mike Holmes the Man Behind the Overalls
Mike Holmes The Man Behind the Overalls Building got into Mike’s blood very early on. As a kid growing up, he would watch his father work around the house and on neighbours’ homes. His father started to teach him. By the time Mike was 10 he had built a three-bedroom tree fort, and by 12 he had completed his first basement – all under the watchful eye of his father. Working as a contractor for more than 30 years, Mike’s been helping people in trouble. People whose homes have been damaged, lives turned upside down and who have run out of options. Mike never wanted to work in television. But while building sets on a home design show, Mike did what he does best: speak his mind. While he ranted on the kinds of shows that could help the homeowners he dealt with every day, a studio executive listened and agreed. There was only one catch: He would produce the show only if Mike hosted. Holmes on Homes® was born, and with it, a new era of home renovation programming. Mike’s rare ability to explain even the most complicated building methods made Holmes on Homes® a hit on HGTV Canada, and Mike an instant favourite with homeowners around the world. With the success of this Gemini award-winning series, Mike moved onto Holmes Inspection where he revealed major repairs home inspectors missed. Using television as tool, Mike’s been educating homeowners for over ten years, teaching them about proper building code, what to look for in contractors and their rights as homeowners.

Concrobium Mold Control®, the patented antimicrobial solution that eliminates and prevents mold without the use of harmful chemicals, has been officially designated a HOLMES Approved Product. The innovative product has been used by homeowners, building professionals and mold remediators for over a decade to eradicate tough mold problems. “It’s about healthy homes. So when we see mold we have to take it seriously. We address the root cause of the mold – the moisture issues – and we get rid of it using solutions that work, and that aren’t more toxic than the mold. My crew’s been using Concrobium Mold Control for years. It’s safe and it works.” The HOLMES Approved Products program was designed to help homeowners choose products that support the health and safety of their home, including improved indoor air quality.
