m Tourism: Concept and Types of Tourism m m 1.1 CONCEPT OF TOURISM Tourism is an ever-expanding service industry with vast growth potential and has therefore become one of the crucial concerns of the not only nations but also of the international community as a whole. Infact, it has come up as a decisive link in gearing up the pace of the socio-economic development world over. It is believed that the word tour in the context of tourism became established in the English language by the eighteen century. On the other hand, according to oxford dictionary, the word tourism first came to light in the English in the nineteen century (1811) from a Greek word 'tomus' meaning a round shaped tool.' Tourism as a phenomenon means the movement of people (both within and across the national borders).Tourism means different things to different people because it is an abstraction of a wide range of consumption activities which demand products and services from a wide range of industries in the economy. In 1905, E. Freuler defined tourism in the modem sense of the world "as a phenomena of modem times based on the increased need for recuperation and change of air, the awakened, and cultivated appreciation of scenic beauty, the pleasure in. and the enjoyment of nature and in particularly brought about by the increasing mingling of various nations and classes of human society, as a result of the development of commerce, industry and trade, and the perfection of the means of transport'.^ Professor Huziker and Krapf of the. -

Although the nomination carries the National Trust’s name, in its current form it is very different to the nomination submitted by the National Trust in 2015. It appears to have been considerably re-worded since its receipt by Heritage NSW. The Ultimo Power House is clearly of State-level significance and should be included in the State Heritage Register (SHR), to give it the appropriate level of statutory oversight and protection. However, the National Trust is gravely concerned that, if the Power House were to be listed on the State Heritage Register for the reasons set out in the advertised nomination, then it would be listed for inadequate and poorly stated reasons (even if this were preferable to it not being listed at all). When the National Trust nominated the Ultimo Power House in 2015, we believed that the site involved larger heritage significance issues associated with its operation as part of the Powerhouse Museum. At the time, we had insufficient information to pursue that aspect of its significance. -

Abstract Title: Bronze Southern Doors of the Mitchell Library, Sydney. The building of the major part of the Mitchell Library (1939 - 1942) resulted in four pairs of bronze entrance doors, three on the northern facade and one on the southern facade. The three pairs on the northern facade of the library are obvious to everyone entering the library from Shakespeare Place and are well documented. However very little has been written on the pair on the southern facade apart from brief mentions in two books of the State Library buildings, so few people know of their existence. Sadly the excellent bronze doors on the southern facade of the library cannot readily be opened and are largely hidden from view due to the 1987 construction of the Glass House skylight between the newly built main wing of the State Library of New South Wales and the Mitchell Library. These doors consist of six square panels featuring bas-reliefs of different early printers’ marks and two rectangular panels at the bottom with New South Wales wildflowers. -

ISBN-10: 0-9876055-0-X ISBN-13: 978-0-9876055-0-4 Hijjas Kasturi and Harry Seidler in Malaysia Australian-Asian Exchange and the Genesis of a “Canonical Work” Amit Srivastava University of Adelaide In 1980, months after his unsuccessful competition entries for the Australian Parliament House and the Hong Kong Shanghai Bank headquarters, Harry Seidler entered into collaboration with Malaysian architect Hijjas (bin) Kasturi that proved much more fruitful. Their design for an office building for Laylian Realty in Kuala Lumpur was a departure from Seidler’s quadrant geometries of the previous decade, introducing a sinuous “S” profile that would define his subsequent work. Although never realised, Kenneth Frampton has described this project as a “canonical work” that was the “basic prototype for a new generation of medium to high-rise commercial structures.” But Seidler’s felicitous collaboration with Hijjas was evidently more than just circumstantial, arising from a longer term relationship that is part of a larger story of Australian-Asian exchange. -
The Influence of Harry Rembert's European Architectural
“Enthusiasm, Energy and Originality”: The Influence of Harry Rembert’s European Architectural Investigations on Australian Post-war University Design Nicola Pullan and Robert Freestone University of New South Wales Tertiary expansion during the 1950s and 1960s in Australia was unprecedented. With growing student numbers and a global technological revolution came the pressing need for modern scientific educational and research facilities. This paper examines the design of university campus buildings during the post-war decades through the lens and the mobility of European influences both physical and cultural. The NSW Government Architect was charged with the design and construction of new buildings for higher education in Sydney. To meet the design needs of this challenging program, in 1955 Harry Rembert, the office’s Senior Designing Architect, embarked on an extended architectural study tour overseas, visiting North America, the UK and Europe. Already a practitioner of Dudokian Modernism experienced at a distance through architectural journals, Rembert was enlightened and excited by his first-hand encounters with the “inherent good , edited by Victoria Jackson Victoria by , edited Energy and Originality’: The taste” of the best modern European architecture. In the only substantive report of his career, he documented the “enthusiasm, energy and originality” of European exemplars of community facilities, administrative buildings and housing, as well as laboratories, schools and other structures. He returned to Sydney to direct, give responsibility to, and then support a group of younger architects striving to make their mark with innovative modernist designs whilst still acknowledging Proceedings of the Society of Architectural Historians, Proceedings of the Society of Architectural , Distance Looks Back the country’s distinctive character and traditions. -

LSAA 2000 AUCKLAND STRUCTURAL EXPRESSION INARCHITECTURE Harry Street Design Director at Creative Spaces Ltd Abstract A personal view of how structure can be employed to create exciting and memorable buildings. Commencing with the English 'Hi Tech' architects, the influence of Philip Cox and work at Creative Spaces the address will illustrate with the aid of slides how structural concepts, their expression and how they are detailed can generate a vibrant interesting architecture. Introduction Expressing the structure in buildings, making it evident how they stand up, has been a legitimate, although perhaps not always intentional, form of architectural expression since time immemorial. There can be no doubt about how the roof of the Parthenon on the acropolis was held up. This was probably not the designer's main motivation when considering the buildings aesthetics, nor indeed the primary motivation of many others over the centuries. Nevertheless the structure is there for us to appreciate in this and in many other examples. The English Experience My own understanding of this was slow in dawning, but following my formal training and during my O.E. Iwas attracted to the exciting architecture of the English architects of the 70's where structural expression was a key ingredient of the so-called "Hi Tech" aesthetic. The most memorable buildings of this period included: The Centre Pompidou where everything is expressed, nothing hidden, all in its right place and very ordered through the use of strong colour The Willis Faber Dumas building in Ipswich is a far less exuberant example of the style. Nevertheless the relatively conventional concrete structure of round columns and waffle slab is plainly evident. -

He and wife Beatrice (1885?-1978) moved into Villa Maria in 1920 and developed a fine garden. In 1929 they moved to a new house, Santos, at 11 Yosefa Ave. “Mr Aley, the architect, and incidentally the owner, has planned both house and garden with the utmost care, so that each should combine to make a delightful whole. The irregular shape and sloping nature of the ground presented many difficulties, but at the same time abounded with possibilities, of which he has taken full advantage. The most important thing, in a house of this sort, and indeed in any house, is aspect, and here it is just right. -

Tourism is not a dirty word Partridge/Galbraith “Tourism is not a Dirty Word” – the importance of tourism to the sustainability of Botanic Gardens Alison Partridge Going Gardens, UK Introduction The aim of this session was to examine the important and strategic role the tourist industry should be playing in the conservation and sustainability of botanic, and other, gardens. To set the scene we looked at statistics coming out of Canada and the UK. In Canada, visiting a garden ranked 9th on the list of top 20 activities important to visitors. VisitBritain reported that 1/3 of the 31 million visitors in 2012, enjoyed a park or garden. Clearly there is a demand for this touristic product in both markets and yet “Garden Tourism” continues to be classified as a niche market and outside the mainstream marketing focus. The development of the Vancouver Island Garden Trail, on Canada’s west coast, in 2002, was used as an example of how collectively gardens can promote a region, with more visits to each individual property being the result. The success of this project brought garden tourism to the attention of Canadian destination marketing organisations and companies, with the effect of including this product in more traditional marketing efforts, such as adventure tourism, outdoor trourism and eco-tourism. Other examples internationally were held up as the way forward for gardens to increase visitor numbers, and therefore revenue; also, for those with no ticket price, after-gate spending, thereby sustaining their ability to maintain their garden and whatever important research and development they may be seeking to undertake. -
