The history of the site is as mysterious as it is fascinating. Baptized by one of the first Franciscan missionaries in Mexico, Juan Diego remains a prominent spiritual figure in Mexico to this day. According to legend, the Virgin Mary made a series of appearances to Juan Diego in December of 1531. The first apparition came on Tepeyac Hill as Juan Diego traveled to mass. Based on this encounter, Juan Diego requested that a shrine be erected there, where the Blessed Mother had promised to shed graces upon those who invoked her. The bishop hesitated to believe Juan Diego’s claims and wished for a sign as proof. Days later Juan Diego returned to Tepeyac, where the Blessed Virgin appeared to him again, this time instructing him to climb the hill and gather the flowers he would find at the top. Though it was the dead of winter, Juan Diego indeed discovered roses in bloom atop the hill. He brought them back to her, and she arranged them in his mantle and sent him to the bishop. Upon his arrival, Juan Diego opened his cloak to present the flowers and they tumbled to the floor. In their place, an image of the Virgin remained impressed upon the mantle – an image of the apparition at Tepeyac. A shrine was built near the hill at Tepeyac to honor the Lady of Guadalupe, as she wished to be known. It remains among the most visited Catholic pilgrimage sites to this day.
