Keeping the Columbus statue broadcasts a clear message exalting the history of lack of care for humanity of colonists and imperialists. If we want to stand by the ideals of equity and social justice, removing this symbol of inequity and harm from our city. Daniel Galvin Yes Remove The Christopher Columbus statue in Shenley Park should be immediately removed with all expediency - which is why the process of replacement or alternation, and accompanying delays, is unacceptable as well. The fact that it has remained there this long is an embarrassment to Pittsburgh, and an insult to the native people whose land this was for thousands of years. For native people - including friends of mine whose viewpoints I greatly value - this is tantamount to a statue of Hitler in a Jewish neighborhood, or a monument commemorating the cross-Atlantic slave trade being erected in a black neighborhood.

Abstract “We’re Still Here!”: The Rhetorical Education of the Prince Edward County Free School Association, 1963-1964, was directed by Lois Agnew. In 1954, the Prince Edward County Board of Supervisors voted to withhold funding to public schools in reaction to the Brown vs. Board of Education ruling. Public schools remained closed for five years in this county. The White community created and sustained a private segregation academy. The Black community worked to provide a variety of programs to keep students engaged. In 1963, the Kennedy Administration took note of the Black community’s plight. Black community leaders and members of the Kennedy Administration worked to establish the Free School Association, a one-year temporary solution to the school closure crisis. The Free School made plain its intention to provide students with the skills they believed necessary for becoming active citizens despite the obstructions placed upon them by the White community.

    This brief history of Pittsburgh’s Civil Rights Movement, written by Professor Larry Glasco of the University of Pittsburgh, is a slightly modified version of the text that first appeared in the “Freedom Corner 2001” Commemorative Brochure. It is very important that we ultimately be able to tell the full history of that movement and of the people—leaders and rank and file—who made it possible. To Make “Some Place Special” The Civil Rights Movement in Pittsburgh The Civil Rights Movement, with its compelling images of American citizens, black and white, young and old, male and female, resisting non-violently the wrath of segregation’s supporters—the police dogs, the water hoses, the KKK, the church bombings, the defiant governors, the heckling mobs—has come to symbolize the world’s struggle for human rights. The civil rights movement ultimately vindicated African Americans’ long struggle for racial justice. In doing so, it emboldened other Americans—women, gays, the elderly, the physically disabled, white ethnics and non-white immigrants—to assert themselves. It even had a world- wide impact, inspiring oppressed minorities as diverse as blacks in Latin America and South Africa, Untouchables in India, Palestinians in the Middle East, Aborigines in Australia, Catholics in Northern Ireland, dissidents in Eastern Europe, and Chinese students at Tiananmen Square. In the South, the movement faced enormous obstacles but at least had the benefit of clear- cut targets, such as segregationist laws and blatant voting discrimination.

University of Pittsburgh, 2004 This dissertation analyzes the impact of civil rights, women’s rights, and gay rights activists on public policy in Pittsburgh during the 1960s and 1970s. It challenges several of the interpretations which other scholars have made about the history and impact of the New Left and social movements in the United States since 1960. This study applies social network analysis to politics to explain the successes and failures these social movements had in the city in winning the reforms that they sought for their communities. As the activists grew in their political sophistication, so their political networks matured. Pittsburgh activists did not ignore the means of power that social movement scholars traditionally study, power at the polls and in the streets. But in addition to such tools, activists built a base of trust, respect, and mutual support between themselves and local politicians.
