Trump Campaign Manager: Hillary's The Most 'Joyless Candidate In Presidential Political History' [VIDEO] (2.06/3) Kellyanne Conway, Donald Trump’s campaign manager, said on Sunday that Hillary Clinton is the most “joyless candidate in presidential political history.” Appearing on ABC’s “This Week,” host George Stephanopoulos asked Conway if “Donald Trump should be transparent and release his tax returns?” “I’m glad he’s transparent about a number of things. And we’re certainly running against the least accountable, least transparent, I think joyless candidate in presidential political history.” “But I’ve learned from the inside, that this audit is a serious matter,” Conway said. “And that he has said when the audit is complete, he’ll release his tax returns. I also know as a pollster that what concerns people most about quote taxes is their own tax liability. 3 NYC remembers dark chapter of Crown Heights race riot (1.22/3) NEW YORK (AP) — A memorial and a march are among the commemorations marking the 25th anniversary of one of New York City's darkest chapters. The 1991 race riot in the Crown Heights neighborhood in Brooklyn started after a black 7-year-old boy was hit and killed by a car in a rabbi's motorcade. Hours later, a Jewish doctoral student was stabbed to death. Four days of violence followed. The neighborhood is holding a series of anniversary events Sunday as part of "One Crown Heights. " One of the events, a festival, has been criticized by relatives of the Jewish student as being insensitive and trivializing what happened. Organizers say the festival is a way to bring children of different backgrounds together and to acknowledge years of efforts to foster communication between groups.

Police: Pregnant woman among 5 dead in southern Alabama home (1.16/3) CITRONELLE, Ala. (AP) — It may take investigators days to untangle a grisly murder scene at a southern Alabama home where five adults, including one pregnant female, were found murdered, authorities said Sunday. Police said the victims were found Saturday afternoon inside the residence located in the city of Citronelle, about 30 miles northwest of Mobile. A 4-month-old infant also was found alive at the home. Authorities were still working to identify the bodies and notify relatives, Capt. Paul Burch of the Mobile County Sheriff's Office told reporters early Sunday morning. "Given the way the scene looks, we're going to be here a couple of days," Burch said. "It's obviously a horrific scene. " Mobile County District Attorney Ashley Rich told reporters near the scene that in her 20-year career as a prosecutor, she's never encountered a crime "where there were five people who were brutally and viciously murdered, and that's what we have here. " "There are multiple weapons that have been used," she said. Burch told reporters at the scene that "there was some type of instrument other than a firearm used on them. " Suspect Derrick Dearman of Leakesville, Miss., was taken into custody after he walked into the Greene County Sheriff's Office Saturday afternoon and confessed to the crimes, Burch told Al.com (http://bit.ly/2bd4hvO). Burch said he expects Dearman to face five or six counts of capital murder. One of the victims was a woman who was about five months pregnant. On its official Twitter account, the sheriff's office said Sunday that detectives are "attempting to establish the relationship between Dearman and the victims. " Burch said that it wasn't immediately clear whether the victims had been attacked while sleeping or had engaged in a prolonged struggle. "We're not there yet," Rich said, when asked about details of the deaths. "We have a horrible scene here. " Burch said it appeared events began unfolding in the early hours of Saturday morning. Somewhere between midnight and 1 a.m., residents of the house had called 911 to report a trespasser. Burch said it was his understanding that during the call Dearman had been identified as the trespasser. Burch said he understood that Citronelle police responded to the call, but found no one. Burch said it appeared the murders had taken place later Saturday morning. By Saturday afternoon, a woman reported to Citronelle police that she'd been kidnapped and escaped. Information from her account led Citronelle police to the house on Jim Platt Road. Burch said investigators believed the woman who contacted police had an undetermined relationship with Dearman. An investigation is ongoing.

Iraq executes 36 men convicted in Islamic State massacre (1.02/3) BAGHDAD — Iraq has executed 36 men convicted of taking part in the Islamic State group’s massacre of hundreds of soldiers in 2014, according to Iraqi officials. The men were hanged at the Nasiriyah prison in southern Iraq on Sunday, according to provincial Gov. Yahya al- Nasiri. A Justice Ministry official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief reporters, confirmed the executions. IS captured an estimated 1,700 soldiers after the group overran Saddam Hussein’s hometown of Tikrit in 2014. The soldiers were trying to flee from nearby Camp Speicher, a former U. S. base just outside the northern city. Shortly after taking Tikrit, IS posted graphic images of gunmen shooting the men dead after forcing them to lie face-down in a shallow ditch. The Speicher massacre sparked outrage across Iraq and partially fueled the mobilization of Shiite militias in the fight against IS, a Sunni extremist group. The militias now rival the power of Iraq’s conventional armed forces. Iraqi forces arrested dozens of men allegedly linked to the massacre after retaking Tikrit in 2015 with the help of U. S.-led airstrikes. The men executed on Sunday were sentenced to death by an Iraqi court earlier this year. Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has attempted to fast-track the implementation of death sentences following a series of large-scale bombings in and around Baghdad in recent months. The United Nations criticized that policy earlier this month, saying that “given the weakness of the Iraqi justice system,” the rushed sentences risk causing “greater injustice.” Iraq ranks among the top five countries in the world in the use of capital punishment, according to figures compiled by the rights group Amnesty International.

Israeli Air Force, tanks strike Hamas targets in Gaza after rocket hits Sderot — RT News (1.02/3) On Sunday afternoon, both the Israeli Air Force and armored corps on the ground targeted Hamas, who is considered a terrorist organization in Israel. Earlier in the day, a rocket exploded in the southern Israeli city of Sderot, with the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) saying the missile had been launched from the Gaza Strip. No injuries or damage have been reported in Sderot, which has a population of 19,000, while the police have called on members of the public to stay away from the scene. In Gaza, Israeli artillery fire was reported, Haaretz said, citing Palestinian eyewitnesses. Rocket sirens have been sounded in Sderot and nearby communities on the Gaza border, the Israeli media reported. There so far have been no reports of Palestinian casualties. In July 2014, rockets from Gaza reportedly left two Sderot residential buildings in ruins. Some 15 people were said to be injured on the Palestinian side in Israel's attack.

50 Killed In Wedding Suicide Bombing (1.02/3) A reported Islamic State affiliated suicide bomber walked into a wedding in Turkey Saturday, killing 50 and wounding 100 others, according to the Telegraph. The bomb exploded late Saturday night at the wedding reception, where hundreds of people were dancing in the streets. The event was held in Gaziantep, a town that borders Syria. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the attack had the hallmarks of an ISIS assault. Erdogan also stated ISIS is trying to “provoke people by abusing ethnic and sectarian sensitiveness,” according to the Telegraph. The president told the Turkish people that “the blood spilled by our martyred brothers will not be forgotten,” reports the Journal. This is the first terrorist attack in Turkey since June, when a bomb killed 45 at Instanbul’s airport. An eye witness said that the celebration came to an abrupt end when there was a giant explosion that sent “blood and body parts everywhere,” according to Telegraph reports. Another witness told reporters that she didn’t know what happened in the moment, but the only thing she did know was “that my neighbour died on top of me.” She added that “if she had not fallen on me, I would have died, too.” The explosion was so loud that it could be heard from several neighborhoods away. 10 Backstreet Boys and NSync founder Lou Pearlman dies (1.02/3) American boy band mogul Lou Pearlman has died in prison at the age of 62. Pearlman launched the careers of the Backstreet Boys, the best-selling boy band of all time, and NSync, among others. He was jailed for 25 years in 2008 over a massive $300m (£153m) Ponzi fraud scheme. NSync singer Lance Bass tweeted that Pearlman was not the best businessman but that he would not be where he was without his influence. The cause of death has not yet been revealed. Pearlman was inspired by the success of New Kids on the Block and formed his own record label, launching a $3m talent sweep that in 1993 selected five unknowns to be the Backstreet Boys. They went on to sell 130 million records. NSync were also a huge success, selling more than 55 million. Pearlman later managed other boy bands such as LFO, Take 5, Natural and O-Town, and the girl group Innosense, which initially featured Britney Spears. Lance Bass wrote on Twitter: "Word is that #LouPearlman has passed away. He might not have been a stand up businessman, but I wouldn't be doing what I love today wthout his influence. RIP Lou. " O-Town's Ashley Parker Angel posted: "Love him or hate him, Lou gave many of us our start. It's a shame he let greed get in his way. " Pearlman swindled family, friends, investors and banks by enticing them to put money into two fake companies for 20 years. Prosecutors counted at least 250 individual victims who lost a total of $200m plus 10 financial institutions that lost $100m. The judge at his trial said victims included "his family, his close friends and people in their 70s and 80s who have lost their life savings". "So the sympathy factor doesn't run high with the court," the judge said. In a statement, Pearlman had said: "Since my arrest, I've come to realise the harm that's been done. I'm truly sorry and I apologise for what's happened. " Lou Pearlman, Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC manager, dies at 62 rss.cnn.com 2016-08-21 17:42 www.bbc.co.uk

Banksy artwork removed from Cheltenham house (1.02/3) A Banksy artwork painted on the side of a listed building in Cheltenham has been removed. Spy Booth depicted 1950s- style spies "snooping" on a man in a phone box. It appeared in 2014 , three miles from government listening post GCHQ. A pile of rubble now lies on the ground below the wall of the house it was on. The piece gained listed status last year after Cheltenham Borough Council granted it retrospective planning permission. A social media post on Saturday appeared to show the mural being cut down behind a tarpaulin, with the sound of machinery audible. Local people had campaigned to save the artwork, on the corner of Fairview Road and Hewlett Road, after an apparent attempt to remove it for it to be sold in July 2014. It was later defaced with spray paint and has been vandalised several times since. In January this year the Grade II-listed house was put for for sale . A Gloucestershire Police spokeswoman said the force had had no reports of a crime being committed. Looking behind the tarpaulin and scaffolding which had already been erected around the Banksy, all that can be seen now is a bare brick wall and a pile of rubble. But has the Banksy artwork actually been destroyed? Bits of the rubble definitely have plaster on them, but there do not appear to be many pieces with paint on them. So could Spy Booth have in fact been taken away and saved? A post on Twitter from a local resident suggests it is not the last we have seen of the mural. "It'll be back. Plans have been made," the post says. Or perhaps that simply means it will be repainted one day? All attempts I have made today to contact the house owner have failed. Until we find out exactly what has happened to Spy Booth, it will remain a mystery. Steve Jordan, leader of Cheltenham Borough Council, said work had been taking place to repair plasterwork on the wall of the house after the council had issued an enforcement notice. But he said he was unaware the Banksy had vanished. "It is protected by a listing. I will have a look at what the situation is, certainly," he said.

The Latest: Kipchoge finally gets marathon gold (1.02/3) RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — The latest on the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro (all times local): 12:50 p.m. MEDAL ALERT: Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya finally has won the gold medal in the Olympic marathon, finishing with a time of 2 hours, 8 minutes and 44 seconds as he sprinted to the finish line with a smile on his face. Kipchoge missed the 2012 Games, but he finished second in 2008 in Beijing and was third in this event in the 2004 Athens Games. He was a favorite coming in as the dominant marathoner of the past couple years, and he took the lead for good after the 30-kilometer mark. Feyisa Lelisa of Ethiopia finished second for the silver, while American Galen Rupp took bronze in his second marathon and first ever in the Olympics. Rupp became the first American to medal in this event since Meb Keflezighi won silver in 2004. A field of 155 runners started the marathon — the biggest field in Olympic history. ___ 11:20 American Kyle Snyder will wrestle for a gold medal later Sunday at 97 kilograms in men's freestyle after rallying to beat Georgia's Elizbar Odikadze 9-4 in the semifinals. Odikadze stunned the 20- year-old defending world champion with a four-point arm throw early in the match. But Snyder responded, taking control by walking the Georgian to the edge of the mat for a standing takedown. Snyder, who wrestles for Ohio State, will face Azerbaijan's Khetag Goziumov in an effort to become the youngest U. S. Olympic champion in . Snyder also represents the U. S.'s final chance at a gold medal in men's freestyle. The Americans have had at least one men's freestyle champion in every Olympics since 1968. Azerbaijan's Toghrul Asgarov will go for his second straight Olympic medal at 65 kilograms against Russian Soslan Ramonov, who scored a staggering 18 points in his semifinal win. ___ 11 a.m. For some nations, winning Olympic gold is quite the regular occurrence. At the Rio de Janeiro Games, plenty of first-timers got to hear their anthems played in celebration as well. Going into Sunday's final day of competition in Rio, 10 teams — including the independent team of Olympians — were assured of leaving these games with their first gold medals. That's the most first-timers since 16 nations got their inaugural feel of Olympic gold at the Atlanta Games in 1996. And those were hardly the only medal milestones at these games. The United States became the first team to win 1,000 gold medals in summer games competition, and a record 87 teams got at least one medal in Rio. A look at the 10 first-time Olympic champions: ___ 10:45 a.m. American swimmer Ryan Lochte says he over-exaggerated what happened at a Rio de Janeiro gas station and acknowledged it was his "immature behavior" that got him and three teammates into a mess that consumed the final days of the Olympics. Lochte, in a portion of an interview with NBC's Matt Lauer that aired Saturday , continued backtracking from a story that he initially described as an armed robbery. Police have said the swimmers vandalized a bathroom after a night of partying and armed guards confronted them and asked them to pay for the damage. "It's how you want to make it look like," Lochte said. "Whether you call it a robbery or whether you call it extortion or us just paying for the damages, we don't know. All we know is that there was a gun pointed in our direction and we were demanded to give money. " ___ 10:30 a.m. The men's Olympic marathon is underway in damp conditions on the streets of downtown Rio. After 19 kilometers, a leading pack of about 30 runners is bunched up in a group that includes Kenyan and Ugandan favorites as well as American Galen Rudd. This is the last event in the Olympic track and field program in Rio, and the Kenyans are expecting to wrap it up with gold. Eliud Kipchoge has been the dominant marathoner the last two years and is at the front of the leading group, while his Kenyan teammate Stanley Biwott also is a contender. Stephen Kiptrotich of Uganda is looking to defend the gold medal he won in the 2012 London Games. With the rain, only a small crowd of fans and supporters in ponchos and holding umbrellas were on hand to see the runners off on the course winding through the soggy streets of Rio de Janeiro. Larger crowds built up as the course took runners along the famous beaches of Rio. ___ 09:50 a.m. The men's marathon has started in a downpour with runners leaving from the Sambodromo stadium in central Rio. 13 Cristhian Stuani's double downs Sunderland (1.02/3) Cristhian Stuani handed Aitor Karanka his first Premier League victory as Middlesbrough claimed the Wear-Tees derby honours at Sunderland. Stuani's first-half double secured the three points at the Stadium of Light, although the Teessiders had to weather a second-half fightback after ' men gave themselves a chance with Patrick van Aanholt's 71st-minute strike. But to the disappointment of the locals among a crowd of 43,515, it was the top- flight newcomers who emerged victorious on an afternoon when the Black Cats, who have not won a Premier League game in August or September since 2012, were made to pay for both defensive frailty and wayward finishing. Moyes had been encouraged by his side's performance in the opening-day defeat at Manchester City, but having seen his resources further depleted by Younes Kaboul's departure for Watford, want-away defender Lamine Kone's back injury and Fabio Borini's absence with a toe problem, the XI with which he started had an inexperienced look about it. That said, Adnan Januzaj, Lynden Gooch and Duncan Watmore all started in promising fashion as the Black Cats took the game to their neighbours, although with star striker Jermain Defoe strangely subdued, they were able to create little of note before disaster struck. The Teessiders had negotiated the first 13 minutes largely pinned back inside their own half and there did not look to be a great deal on when Stuani and Alvaro Negredo exchanged passes during a rare foray into enemy territory. But the Uruguayan took full advantage when he took aim from distance and sent a dipping shot over the astonished Vito Mannone and into the top corner. With Adam Forshaw and Adam Clayton operating in front of the Boro back four, they began to gain a foothold in the game, and Sunderland's fortunes took a turn for the worse nine minutes before the break when skipper John O'Shea limped off, prompting Moyes to employ Jack Rodwell as an emergency central defender alongside debutant Papy Djilobodji. But the home side was dealt another sickening blow on the stroke of half-time when the impressive Negredo collected Forshaw's reverse pass, stepped inside Rodwell and squared for Stuani to smash home his second. Moyes' response was to put defensive midfielder Paddy McNair out of his misery after the break and introduce Jeremain Lens, and Defoe had early penalty appeals waved away after going down under Antonio Barragan's challenge. Januzaj might have equalised after running on to Lens' pull-back on the hour, only to scuff his attempt horribly, although Brad Guzan had to get down well to palm away Van Aanholt's drive seconds later as Sunderland stepped up a gear. They would have been back in the game within five minutes had not thrown himself into the path of Defoe's close-range effort, but they were with 19 minutes remaining when Guzan would only parry Watmore's strike and Van Aanholt followed up to score. Boro, just as they had done last weekend against Stoke, visibly tired as time ran down, but they managed to hold out amid a late onslaught.

‘Bloody battle of attrition’: UFC fans react to ‘brutal’ McGregor-Diaz brawl (PHOTOS, VIDEOS) — RT Sport The grudge match went to five rounds in front of a baying crowd in Las Vegas, with the judges scoring the close fight in the Irishman’s favor. READ MORE: McGregor beats Nate Diaz on points at UFC 202 The UFC 202 main event has been likened to a bout between fictional boxing rivals Rocky Balboa and Apollo Creed, thanks to an intense build up and the dogged nature of both fighters. Viewers have since tweeted about the severe punishment both fighters were able to withstand, with one fan describing the match as a “bloody battle of attrition.” In the lead up to the UFC 202 grudge match, McGregor had threatened to ‘kill’ Diaz in the octagon, following his defeat to the Stockton fighter last March. READ MORE: Conor McGregor threatens to ‘kill’ Diaz at UFC 202 grudge match (VIDEOS) But despite Diaz being dropped three times during the fight, there wasn’t much between the pair, with both fighters ending the match battered and bloodied - but somehow still standing. In a post-match interview, McGregor paid tribute to his hard-hitting opponent, praising him for putting up stiff resistance. “He was about 25lbs heavier than me in there. Man, he is as tough as they come. I mean his face was leaking and he was still in my face. “I hit him one or two [punches] back to the body and that sort of swayed it in my favor, but it was a hell of fight. Very close fight. It’s one for the ages.” The scorecard for the T Mobile Arena match-up shows judges awarded the fight to McGregor in a majority decision. However, debate has erupted online over the result, with a split among some UFC fans over whether McGregor really did gain the upper hand. Diaz has since said he was surprised that McGregor was awarded the victory. “I thought I won at least three rounds. Obviously I think I could have done better and done some better things. But yeah, I thought I won the fight,” he said. He accused McGregor of being “scared to engage” and backing off during the fight. “I feel like they [the judges] should have taken points [off] for that,” Diaz added. With the scores now equal after two fights, fans are now calling for the pair to return to the octagon in the near future to decide things once and for all.

Argentina came with the aim of getting their campaign off to a winning start‚ targeting two Rugby Championship victories‚ with the Boks being the first scalp on their to-do list. It was almost mission accomplished for Los Pumas‚ who were in the lead until the 73rd minute when the Boks levelled the scores. With only two minutes remaining on the clock‚ No8 Warren Whiteley brought a sigh of relief to the stadium when he scored the winning try for the Boks to secure a 30-23 victory. The Boks had the better start while a nervy Argentina side tried to compose themselves. Following a missed penalty by Elton Jantjies in the sixth minute‚ the home side earned the lead in the seventh minute through a try from winger Ruan Combrinck‚ who dotted down for his second try in three tests. The only other first-half points for the Boks came through a penalty from Jantjies. After trailing‚ Los Pumas earned the lead for the first time in the 25th minute when centre Matias Orlando scored the opening try for the visitors. Argentina enjoyed a 10-13 lead at the break‚ despite the visitors having played for 10 minutes with one man down after winger Manuel Montero was given a yellow card for a tip-tackle on Damian de Allende. Instead it was the Boks who were off-colour even with their one-man advantage. The home side conceded 10 points and allowed the Argentines to take the lead while Montero sat in the sin-bin. The Boks began the second half with Bryan Habana being sent to the sin- bin‚ while Argentina built up a lead which‚ at one stage‚ saw them being 13- 23 ahead. Just like the courage they showed against Ireland in the second test during the mid-year series‚ the home team forged a remarkable comeback to clinch the victory. Coach Allister Coetzee will have some concerns with some of the team's decision-making as the side heads to Argentina next week‚ where they will square up for the return-leg in Salta.

‘Run Ernie Run’: 93-year-old WWII veteran completes epic US coast-to-coast run — RT America Andrus’ first steps on the epic journey were made in San Diego in October 2013. Just under three years later, he made the final footfalls of his heroic adventure on St. Simon’s Island, Georgia, on Saturday. It was a double celebration for the World War II veteran, who turned 93 on Friday. However, Andrus had a few regrets that his epic journey, which had lasted two years and 10 months, had finally come to an end. "Oh, it’s great,” Andrus told the Brunswick News after making it to his final destination. “I’m glad to have finished and met the goal. But I wish it wasn’t over.” Reminiscent of the Hollywood movie ‘Forrest Gump’, Andrus had followers wearing ‘Run, Ernie, Run’ T-shirts. He also managed to meet diverse and incredibly welcoming groups of people throughout his journey. “All these people, it’s so wonderful,” he said. “This is great, this is the biggest crowd I have had, ever.” Andrus sold all his possessions, including his home in California, to help fund his run. The death of his wife was part of his inspiration for undertaking the marathon trek. Councilman John Williams of the City of Mobile, Arizona, was one of the people who met Andrus during his journey. “It didn’t take long after his arrival to know we had a special person in our city,” Williams told AL.com. Unlike the Gump character, Andrus was not merely running for the sake of running. He had a good cause to support. He wanted to raise money and awareness for the LST 325, an amphibious landing vessel which helped the Allies during World War II. Andrus was a medic on a similar ship during the war in Normandy, France, and he saw with his own eyes how vital the LST 325 was during war time. His plan is now to help to restore a World War II ship in Indiana and return it to Normandy for the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings, in 2019. “I’ll tell you what, he’s a tough old man,” John Tallent, an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, who represents the LST 325 and its educational efforts, told the Brunswick News. “Even if he doesn’t raise another dime, the attention he’s brought to WWII, and the sacrifice those men made, has just been phenomenal.” With his epic adventure at an end, Andrus is now planning his next trip, on which he intends to drive his motorhome to Alaska. “Now that I'm a homeless veteran,” he joked to AL.com, “I'll probably go somewhere in California and get me some property. Somewhere I can run.”

QC cops find shabu lab in townhouse MANILA — An abandoned illegal drugs laboratory, which could produce 200 kilograms of shabu (methamphetamine hydrochloride) a week, was discovered in a townhouse in Barangay Apolonio Samson in Quezon City, during a joint operation of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) on Saturday. The empty townhouse unit along Christian Street in Grace Village was raided by the authorities on Saturday afternoon after building owner Wilson Lee complained to the police that the Chinese tenant identified as Daniel Geng failed to pay his rent since April. Lee told the police that his tenant started leasing the townhouse in December 2015 but was unable to pay for his rent beginning March 2016. The owner said he finally decided to have the unit opened on Saturday in the presence of his lawyers, barangay officials and the police. It was during the inspection that PDEA agents and policemen from the QCPD La Loma Station recovered around 10 kilograms of suspected shabu and paraphernalia, apparatus and chemicals used to make the illegal drug. The police said the estimated cost of the recovered substance could be around P35 million while the chemicals and other equipment found in the townhouse could cost around P20 million. The PDEA indicated that the shabu laboratory could also produce 200 kilograms of shabu per week. PDEA operatives also indicated in a report that they have been surveying the place for the past months after they got reports that it was being used as a drug laboratory. Authorities also linked Geng to Shih-ming Tsai, Kuo-chuan Cheng, and Chun-ming Lin, the Chinese drug suspects who were arrested in Las Piñas and Parañaque last July 5. The arrested suspects also operated shabu laboratories in the southern cities. The QCPD said authorities believed that Geng was “their counterpart in Quezon City.” Senior Supt. Guillermo Lorenzo Eleazar, the QCPD chief, advised the public to be careful in renting out their properties and “for landlords and neighbors to immediately report suspicious activities.” SFM

Final buzzer sounds as PBA pays tribute to Dalupan The final buzzer has sounded for the greatest coach in Philippine basketball history. The PBA on Sunday paid homage to the legendary Baby Dalupan with league commissioner Chito Narvasa sounding the ceremonial buzzer at court of Smart Araneta Coliseum just before the game between Barangay Ginebra and Rain or Shine. Caidic, who played for when Dalupan was the school’s Athletic Director, reminisced how the Crispa coach played a role that brought him to play for the Red Warriors. “Nung nag tryout ako sa UE nung ’81, he was the Athletic Director, tapos he was coaching Crispa at that time, nag step-in siya sa practice tapos siyempre kami excited so nagpakita kami ng best namin para ma-impress siya at coaches,” said Caidic who won two UAAP basketball titles with the school. “I found out later na ininstruct niya yung coach na ‘kunin mo yang kaliweteng yan, mapapakinabangan’ those were the exact words na sinabi niya. Imagine that, kung di siya dumating nung time na yun, who knows baka di ako nakuha sa UE.”

29 3 Filipino sympathizers of IS killed in Sarangani PHILIPPINE forces have killed three suspected sympathizers of the Islamic State group but failed to capture their leader in a clash in the country’s south, an army official said on Sunday. Troops seized two rifles and an IS-style black flag of the slain militants, who belonged to a small armed group called the Ansar Al Khilafah Philippines, following Saturday’s clash near Maasim town in Sarangani province, said army Maj. Gen. Rafael Valencia. A militant was captured by the troops prior to the fighting near Maasim, Valencia said. Military officials said the militants, led by their leader, Mohammad Jaafar Sabiwang Maguid, were spotted in a hinterland by villagers, who notified the troops. Valencia said Maguid and several of his men, possibly including some foreigners, managed to escape before the clash, adding that the militants aspire to be affiliated with the Islamic State group. A number of other Islamic groups in the southern Philippines, including Abu Sayyaf, have pledged allegiance to IS, but the military says there has been no sign of a direct collaboration between Filipino gunmen and the militants in Syria and Iraq. /rga

Dipa Karmakar, coach Nandi braved 'conspiracies' to reach the top Agartala : Dipa Karmakar's coach Bisheswar Nandi had once sought the intervention of the Tripura government to "save the career" of the promising gymnast from "unnerving conspiracies". In a long letter to the Secretary of the Tripura Sports Council on February 9, 2012, Nandi had explained the threat to her career as emanating from Gurdial Singh Bawa, the long-time chief coach of the Gymnastics Federation of India. Dipa Karmakar with coach Bishweshwar Nandi at IG Stadium in New Delhi. Pic/ PTI "When I raised the issue of deliberate partiality to pull Dipa down to second place in a tournament in Bangladesh, Bawa threatened to come to Agartala with a stick to chastise me," Nandi, himself a five-time national champion, wrote in the letter. "I have told him to come with a pistol if he can," Nandi wrote in the letter, indicating his desperation. Nandi detailed how Dipa was relegated to second place to ensure the first position in the Sultana Kamal championships in Dhaka (Dec 28-30, 2011) went to Meenakshi, a protege of Bawa and another woman coach close to him. Through his clout, Bawa had ensured that this coach, now settled in Punjab but with roots in Tripura, was one of the judges at the Sultana Kamal championship. Nandi saw a "huge conspiracy" in pushing Dipa to second place, though her performance was "far, far better than Meenakshi's". When Nandi raised the issue after the tournament, Bawa was furious and threatened to destroy both Nandi as a coach and his promising protege Dipa. In sheer panic, Nandi wrote to the Tripura Sports Council to get the state government to intervene to save both his career as a coach and Dipa's as a gymnast. Media reports indicated huge internal bickering in the federation over sending a team of gymnasts to the Commonwealth Games at Glasgow in 2014. Dipa finally made the team and created history by being the first Indian woman to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games gymnastics after she bagged a bronze in the vault event. The 20-year-old from Tripura collected 14.366 points to finish third. On Sunday in Rio, she scored 15.066 in the same event, a huge improvement in two years but not good enough to get her the Olympic bronze, which she missed by a whisker. Unlike Nandi, who was easily the best male gymnast of his era, Bawa is described in an internet CV as a "player", not a gymnast in his pre-coaching career. He was a small-time footballer and is said to have emerged as a chief coach in gymnastics after starting off as a "helper of sorts", as top Tripura and India gymnast of the 1970s Lopa Mudra Ghosh described him. The irony is that after having coached Dipa to Olympic glory Bisheswar Nandi may still find himself deprived of a Dronacharya award. "That is because Bawa is intensely lobbying to get a Dronacharya for his lifetime achievement as a gymnastic coach. But he has never produced a champion," a bitter Ghosh said. Ghosh and other top former gymnasts from the eastern states have started a Facebook campaign for Nandi to get a Dronacharya award. "We must ensure Nandi, and not Bawa, gets the Dronacharya if we want to pay respects to the legendary teacher of Mahabharata fame (after whom the award is named)," Ghosh told IANS.

‘Why are you Americans killing the black people…?’ – Duterte PRESIDENT Duterte on Sunday lashed out at the U. S. police killings of black men in his latest outburst against critics of his anti- drug campaign, which has left hundreds of suspects dead. The Philippines’ brash- talking President also threatened Sunday to withdraw the country from the United Nations after its human rights experts criticized the extra-judicial killings committed under his anti-crime drive. Reacting to U. S. criticisms, Duterte cited the string of shootings involving police and black men that have sparked protests in the U. S. “Why are you Americans killing the black people there, shooting them down when they are already on the ground?” he asked. “Answer that question, because even if it’s just one or two or three, it is still human rights violations.” Criticisms against Duterte’s crusade against a problem that he says has become a pandemic provoked an angry outburst from Duterte, who held a news conference after midnight Saturday that dragged on for more than two hours. The U. S. State Department and two U. N. human rights experts have urged Duterte and Filipino authorities to stop extrajudicial killings in the fight against illegal drugs and ensure law enforcement compliance with international human rights obligations. Philippine police say more than 500 drug suspects have been killed in gunbattles with police since Duterte was sworn in eight weeks ago. Agnes Callamard, the new U. N. Special Rapporteur on summary executions, suggested that Philippine officials could be held liable, saying in a recent statement that “claims to fight illicit drug trade do not absolve the government from its international legal obligations and do not shield state actors or others from responsibility for illegal killings.” Responding to the criticisms, Duterte pointed to the haunting image of a bloodied child being pulled from the rubble of a missile-struck building in the Syrian city of Aleppo to note the inability of the U. S. and the U. N. to stop such deadly conflicts, complaining that he comes under fire for the killings of criminals. “Maybe we’ll just have to decide to separate from the United Nations. If you’re that rude, son of a bitch, we’ll just leave you,” Duterte told reporters in Davao, where he first built a reputation for his tough crime-busting style while serving as the southern city’s longtime mayor. Duterte also belittled U. N. work in the Philippines without providing facts, raising questions, for example, about the performance of the world body’s agency that fights hunger. If the Philippines breaks off from the U. N. — which Duterte called “inutile” and “stupid” — he said he would invite other countries like China and African nations to form a new international body. The U. N., he said, should return Manila’s financial contributions. “Look at the iconic boy that was taken out from the rubble and he was made to sit in the ambulance and we saw it,” Duterte said, referring to the photo of a 5-year-old Syrian boy, Omran Daqneesh, that has gone viral online. “Why is it that United States is not doing anything? I do not read you,” Duterte said. “Anybody in that stupid body complaining about the stench there of death?” When asked about the possible repercussions of his remarks, Duterte replied: “I don’t give a shit about them. They are the ones interfering.” Duterte wondered whether U. N. officials were threatening to put him in prison and repeated that he was ready to sacrifice his life and presidency for his country. Duterte’s drug crackdown has left more than 500 suspected dealers dead and more than 4,400 arrested since he took office on June 30. Nearly 600,000 people have surrendered to authorities, hoping to avoid getting killed. The arrests have further overwhelmed the Philippines’ overcrowded jails. AP/ac/rga RELATED VIDEO

34 300-year-old 'lucky' shoe found in Cambridge University wall London : A 300-year-old remarkably well-preserved shoe has been found in the wall of a University of Cambridge building in the UK that was likely put there to bring luck and ward off evil spirits. The venerable footwear was uncovered by maintenance staff of the St John's College while they were removing panels to install electrical cables a common room for senior academics. The building was originally the residence of the Master of the College. It was built between 1598 and 1602, but it is thought that the shoe was put behind the panels during changes to its interior, between the end of the 17th Century, and mid-way through the 18th, the university said in a statement. Shoes are sometimes found within the walls of old buildings because, in more superstitious times, they were thought to protect the inhabitant and prevent malicious forces from entering. The discovery of the left shoe of a man, measuring over nine and a half inches (about a size 6 by modern standards) has been referred to the Cambridge Archaeological Unit, who have taken photographs and are consulting a specialist in the hope of establishing a precise date. Richard Newman, from the Archaeological Unit, described it as a "classic example" of what researchers call "apotropaic" magic, popular magic designed to bring luck and turn away evil influences. "It was positioned between the chimney breast and the window, which is exactly the sort of location where you would expect to find a shoe being used in this way," Newman added. "Given its location, it is very likely that it was there to play a protective role for the Master of the College. It may even have been one of his old shoes," he said. Popular magic of this type was fairly widespread in England from the 16th to mid-19th Centuries, especially in East Anglia, according to the statement. Although shoes were the most common item of choice for keeping spirits at bay, they were far from the only object embedded in walls for this purpose. More gruesome objects, including dead cats, horses' skulls, and "witch bottles", which contained substances such as hair and urine, have also been found, the statement said. They were hidden in walls, roofs and beneath floors to prevent malevolent forces from bringing bad luck to the building, or its occupants. Why shoes were such a popular choice is not properly understood. One theory is that they were believed to be an effective "spirit trap". Perhaps more plausibly, some historians argue that, at least in the days before mass-production of leather shoes, they took on something of the shape of the wearer's foot. As such, they may have been believed to possess the "spirit" of the owner, while also representing the boundary with unseen forces that surrounded them as they walked.

Rio 2016: Shock defeat for Yogeshwar Dutt in qualification round Rio de Janeiro : In a massive heartbreak for India, wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt slumped to a shock defeat in the men's 65kg freestyle qualification round bout against Ganzorigiin Mandakhnaran of Mongolia at the Rio Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday. Yogeshwar Dutt. File Pic The London Olympic bronze-medallist's only hope of making it to the medal rounds lies in his Mongolian opponent reaching the gold medal round. Mandakhnaran is the gold-medallist from the 2010 Asian Games and a two- time World Championships bronze-winner. Should Mandakhnaran makes the final, Yogeshwar will have to fight two repechage rounds before entering the bronze medal playoff. The 33-year-old grappler from Haryana, who is playing in his fourth and, in all probability, last Olympics, looked a pale shadow of his previous self as he lost 0-3 to the Mongolian grappler. From the very beginning, Yogeshwar failed to get around the Mandakhnaran, who moved at a very fast pace. In the opening period, Mandakhnaran earned a point in 30 seconds due to the passivity of Yogeshwar to take a 1-0 lead. Mandakhnaran then turned a defensive position into an attacking one to take down Yogeshwar and quickly bag two points to surge ahead. With a minute to go, Yogeshwar failed to get around his opponent and went into the break 0-3 down. Yogeshwar, who qualified only in March this year for the Rio Games after struggling with a knee injury, was expected to turn the tables in the second period but he just could not script a comeback. In the last minute of the bout, he tried to pin down his rival but all his efforts went in vain.

Previous attempts by the tech giant to provide the public with internet access were stopped in their tracks. In February India’s telecoms regulator blocked Facebook's Free Basics internet service app , ruling in favour of net neutrality protestors. Free Basics was designed to offer the public with free access to a select number of sites. The free content included selected local news and weather forecasts, the BBC, Wikipedia and some health sites. More than a million people registered complaints about the plan, arguing it would give prominence to certain websites and news sources chosen by Facebook. They claimed it would also give Facebook unchallenged control over the information. At the time Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg wrote he was "disappointed" with the decision but said that Facebook is “committed to keep working to break down barriers to connectivity in India and around the world”. "Connecting India is an important goal we won't give up on, because more than a billion people in India don't have access to the internet. We know that connecting them can help lift people out of poverty, create millions of jobs and spread education opportunities,” he wrote. In response to the complaints, the company is currently testing Express Wi- Fi in India. The service, according to Facebook, will allow people to buy fast, reliable and affordable data packages. The new model has been welcomed by those who ardently protested the Free Basics incentive, including Kiran Jonnalagadda, one of the co- founders of the net neutrality activist group Save the Internet. “We welcome Facebook's initiative to expand internet access in India by providing neutral access without discrimination on what sites a user may visit," he told Mashable. "We are glad to see that Facebook has learnt from their earlier mistakes and responded positively,” Meanwhile, Zuckerberg is working to make Free Basics legal. He told the Verge that Facebook would make another effort to bring the service to India once it was successfully rolled out in other parts of the world. “We’ve learned a lot about how we need to interact with governments and the political system and regulators, and build support in order to have these things work," Zuckerberg said. "And I think we’ll take those lessons forward on the future work we’re doing in Free Basics, which by the way is continuing to roll out around the world. One day, once we’ve shown that it’s a successful program around the world, I hope that we’ll get another chance to come back to India and offer it there, too. " Its part of a battle between Facebook and Google to reach the two-thirds of India’s 1.25bn population that are still not online. Google’s response is to offer free high speed WiFi at 100 railways stations by the end of 2016. In June Google revealed that close to 1.5m people are using free WiFi at 19 railway stations in India where the project has gone live.

Viacom power struggle comes to a close with Sumner Redstone taking control The turbulent fight over $40bn media company Viacom has come to a close, with 93-year-old billionaire Sumner Redstone taking control. A settlement agreement has been reached ending the battle between Redstone and his daughter Shari Redstone, against directors at Viacom and granddaughter Keryn Redstone, who entered the battle in June. Redstone now takes complete control of Viacom - which owns MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and Paramount Pictures - and CBS. Philippe Dauman, who had been Viacom's chief executive, will be removed from the position and his duties as president, under a settlement that includes a $72m payoff. He remains non-executive chairman until 13 September. The company's chief operating officer, Thomas Dooley, will serve as interim chief executive. The fight over Redstone’s empire kicked off in May, when the media owner ousted two of his former confidantes, Philippe Dauman and George Abrams. The decision removed both men from the trust that will control Redstone's affairs when he dies or is declared incompetent. The long drawn out legal battle between members of the company and members of the Redstone family that commenced were focused on whether Redstone, 93, had the mental capacity to run the business and whether he was being dictated by long-estranged daughter Shari. Shortly after Shari reentered Redstone’s life, his alliances switched. Granddaughter Keryn Redstone, 34, pitched in to the high-level fight in June saying she felt compelled to enter the legal fracas because she believes that her aunt, Shari, is dictating the actions of her grandfather. “Shari and her family have managed to totally isolate and effectively kidnap, brainwash and take advantage of my grandfather due to his debilitated state of mind and frail health,” Keryn Redstone said. “I want to express my support for the Viacom directors who have tried to meet with my grandfather but have been denied access by Shari Redstone,” she added, “There is no way that a competent Sumner Redstone, acting with his own free will, would ever refuse to meet with his fellow directors who have been his close friends and allies and so loyal to him over many years.” While a resolution has been reached over control of Redstone’s business empire, the business has been significantly harmed in the process. The company has reported consistent declines in profit and revenue, with its profit dropping 27 per cent in its fiscal third quarter this year. Its share price has tumbled about 47 percent in the last two years.

Facebook courts teenagers with video story app Lifestage Facebook has launched a new app, Lifestage , designed for people aged 21 and under to turn their life story into a video profile. The standalone iOS app has been created by a teenager, Facebook’s 19-year-old product manager Michael Sayman, to appeal to teenagers migrating from Facebook to more youth- friendly Snapchat. Sayman met with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg two years ago after catching the attention of the tech giant through the creation of a number of popular apps, most notably 4Snaps. Sayman made his first app aged 13. Soon after meeting Zuckerberg, Sayman was offered a job at Facebook. Lifestage is his first creation for the tech company. Lifestage’s premise hinges on the early drafts of Facebook in 2004. It connects high school students with others from their school, just as Zuckerberg designed Facebook to connect University students through a social network. The design was inspired by screenshots of early versions of Facebook, Sayman said, where profiles were much more centered around schools, relationships, and personal qualities. The difference with Lifestage, is rather than users having profile photos, the app invites users to record a series of videos and selfies depicting everything from likes, dislikes, friends, pets, dance moves and more. Lifestage turns those clips you recorded into a video profile others can watch. “What if I figured out a way to take Facebook from 2004 and bring it to 2016? What if every field in your profile was a full video?” Sayman told TechCrunch . Lifestage is limited to high school students, and doesn’t require a Facebook login. At least 20 students in each school are required to sign up to the app in order for them to interact with each other. Currently there are no messaging features or one-to-one interactions in the app. Instead, users can post their username for Snapchat or Instagram or a messaging app.

Germany Aborts Hundreds Of Deportations When Migrants Resist Germany hasn’t been able to execute hundreds of deportations because migrants refuse to take flights, government figures show. The country, which has taken 1.5 million refugees since the start of 2015, is desperately trying to deport more rejected asylum seekers to ease pressure on authorities. The government plans to reach 100,000 deportations by the end of the year, but hundreds of refugees have managed to stay by resisting to fly to their home countries. More than 330 deportations have been abandoned since January 2015, because the migrants have shouted, refused to fasten their seat belts or told the pilot they are not traveling on their own free will, according to figures from Germany’s interior ministry. Another 160 ordered deportations fell through because the airline refused to take them as passengers, and 108 escaped because they were sick. Germany’s Minister of the Interior Thomas de Maiziere called for new legislation in June to make deportations easier, as he revealed refugees commit crimes in order to extend their stay in the country. (RELATED: Migrants In Germany Have Found An Easy Loophole To Avoid Deportation) “A massive rise in the number of deportees would only occur if these procedural shortcomings are fixed,” de Maiziere said in June, according to Deutsche Welle. Deportations of convicted criminals are also a struggle for authorities. A recent eviction of three refugees back to Guinea cost $138,000, because they were considered violent and had to go on a chartered plane. 41 LA Gov Checks Dana Bash: 'You Mischaracterized What I Said' Louisiana’s Democrat Governor John Bel Edwards was forced to correct the record during a Sunday morning interview with CNN’s Dana Bash. Bash, filling in for Jake Tapper on State of the Union, stated that “Trump and Mike Pence came down to Baton Rouge on Friday.” “You dismissed the visit as a photo-op,” she continued. “And you said you wished trump would make a donation to a relief effort instead.” Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards speaks during a press conference to update the public on FEMA’s disaster recover and temporary housing programs (Getty Images) Bash then played a clip of former LA Senator Mary Landrieu thanking Trump for visiting areas damaged by the flooding before asking Edwards, “why is she wrong?” The Governor responded, “she’s not.” “You mischaracterized what I said,” he explained. “I didn’t dismiss this as a photo-op. I said before he came down, we welcome him here. We want him to be helpful and hope it didn’t turn into a mere photo-op.” “So you got the story backwards.” Follow Datoc on Twitter and Facebook

42 Obama's New Climate Regs Smells Like Cronyism The Obama administration’s new climate rules for trucking companies are raising concerns regulations are throttling small companies while helping their bigger competitors. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), with aid from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), announced Tuesday changes to fuel emission standards for work trucks, vans and over-the-road semi-trucks under the guise of fighting global warming. The costs for trucking companies vary based on the type of truck and its size. The prices for a big-rig, for instance, will likely increase by as much as $15,100 within the next decade, according to analysis by the Washington Examiner. That’s an increase of about $1,000 per truck from the original proposal. The costs will be steep, whatever the variation. The rules are striking a raw cord with some analysts in the energy industry. “Heavy trucks are run by businesses that understand better than federal bureaucrats the trade offs involved with hiking fuel economy,” Daniel Simmons, vice president for policy at the Institute Energy Research, told the Daily Caller News Foundation. Simmons added that the new regulations, created through a top-down approach, essentially allow bureaucrats and government meddlers to wiggle their way inside an industry. Once there, the government then can, whether purposely or inadvertently, give an unfair advantage to bigger businesses. He added: “The fact that some businesses support these regulations suggests that these businesses want to curry favor with the federal government and because it’s likely they make out better with the regulations than their smaller competitors.” Yet, many of the largest manufacturers and trucks fleet operators in the country are praising the new regulations, such as engine maker Cummins and heavy-duty truck owners Waste Management and Pepsi Co. “[W]e are well-positioned to develop products that comply with this new rule and meet our customers’ needs,” Srikanth Padmanabhan, the president of Cummins Inc., said in a press statement expressing support for the regulations. Meanwhile, the spokesman for the American Truck Dealers, representing about 2,000 heavy-duty truck dealerships, told reporters that the group is “concerned with the possibility that compliance will prove too complex or expensive for the market [dealer customers] to accept without disruption.” Congress, perhaps noting the possibility the new rules could actually help monopolize the trucking industry, decided Thursday to direct the EPA to allow smaller trucking companies and those lacking the technology to comply with the rule to buy their way out. The EPA promptly shoehorned a complicated series of stipulations allowing U. S. trucking companies to pay fines if they are unable to comply with the regulators’ increasingly complicated rules. Similar situations have cropped up in other aspects of the energy industry, particularly regarding the interplay between the coal and oil industries. Major oil company ExxonMobil, for instance, has given piecemeal pro- carbon tax arguments in the past, though it’s currently ramping up its call for the tax. In fact, ten of the world’s largest oil companies – BP, Royal Dutch Shell, and Total, among others — acknowledged in a letter to U. N. climate official Christiana Figueres in 2015, they are joining an initiative calling for carbon pricing. Most of the signers are international companies. Conservative activist and Ohio’s former Secretary of State Ken Blackwell mirrored some of Simmons’ sentiments in January , writing in an editorial with the Washington Times that Exxon’s carbon tax push is nothing short of “crony capitalism,” wherein large companies use government regulations to throttle their competitors. 43 Putin's Opponents Dying Left And Right A well-known opposition leader to Russian President Vladimir Putin fell into a week-long coma after ingesting a mysterious poison following a visit to Washington, D. C. in 2015 to lobby against Putin. Political murder was a time honored tradition in the former , and a New York Times investigation reveals it is being used with increasing frequency by Putin. Political murder, even outside Russian borders, was sanctioned by the Russian parliament in 2006. Alexander Litvinenko, a former Russian spy who defected to Britain, died of radiation poisoning in 2006 after Kremlin agents reportedly slipped radioactive material into a cup of his favorite tea. “The government is using the special services to liquidate its enemies,” former KGB officer and former member of the Russian parliament, Gennadi V. Gudkov, told The New York Times. “It was not just Litvinenko, but many others we don’t know about, classified as accidents or maybe semi- accidents.” Alexander Perepilichny, a Russian oligarch involved in exposing a large Kremlin tax fraud case dropped dead at age 44 in 2012 while jogging in one of London’s richest housing developments. Pereplichny was in perfect health, and in 2015 a botanist discovered he had ingested an extremely rare poison called gelsemium. Gelsemium only grows in the Himalayas and was used by China to carry out assassinations for centuries. “Too many of these happening to important people. Captains of industry and lawyers are not dying left, right and center like this in the West,” William Browder, an American financier involved in pushing sanctions on Russia through Congress told The New York Times. In February 2015, Boris Nemtsov, a leading Putin opposition leader was gunned down on the streets of . Nemtsov was in the midst of preparing a report detailing Russian intervention in Ukraine, an intervention Putin repeatedly denied. Three weeks before Nemstov’s death, he wrote on a Russian website that his 87-year-old mother was afraid Putin would kill him. 44 Bikers Raise Money For 9/11 Families On Ride For Fallen Roughly 1,400 motorcycles thundered into Washington, D. C., Friday afternoon in honor of the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks and to raise money for children of first responders. “As we rode coming through different small towns, the outpouring of people, waving flags, holding signs, it was very moving,” Rick Ritz, a rider from Florida, told The Daily Caller News Foundation. “This is my fourth year riding and that is really the best part for us.” America’s 9/11 Ride (Steve Birr/TheDCNF) The annual event, called America’s 9/11 Ride, began Thursday at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Pennsylvania, before heading to the capital with a full police escort to visit the Pentagon Memorial. Riders departed in the early hours Saturday to begin their trek north to New York City, where the group will pay their respects at ground zero Sunday. The fifteenth anniversary is expected to be the final ride for the group , which is finding it increasingly difficult to organize road closures with local authorities. Organizers host the event in August to allow families of victims to mourn in September. “The ride is in remembrance of 9/11 and we raise money to give scholarships to the children of first responders,” Jimmy Csizmadia, a board member of America’s 9/11 Ride and 14 year participant, told TheDCNF. “We gave roughly $40,000 last year in scholarships, and that’s what it’s all about. Its a logistical nightmare though and its been getting worse and worse.” America’s 9/11 Ride (Steve Birr/TheDCNF) America’s 9/11 Foundation, which oversees the event and fundraising throughout the year, gives roughly 15, $2,000 scholarships to children of first responders annually. Riders and participants in the event donate, while others from across the country chip in as well. The foundation has awarded $330,000 to the children of first responders since their scholarship program began and has given $530,000 to affected police and fire departments and their families. America’s 9/11 Ride (Steve Birr/TheDCNF) The ride also draws local residents who come to speak with the families and event organizers and thank the group for their fundraising and continued remembrance. “They always hold a special place to me because of their loyalty,” Robert, a park ranger at Flight 93 National Memorial in Pennsylvania, told TheDCNF. “Its a real honor to be a ranger there, and its hard to say that about a job. So I feel very fortunate to be able to tell the story of the crew and passengers to the visitors, and motorcycle groups have always made up a large part of the visitors to the memorial.” Another onlooker of the motorcycle ride said the event means a lot to her because of the personal connection she has to the attacks. Her husband worked in the Pentagon but was not at the office on the day of the attacks. She watched the aftermath from a hotel overlooking the Pentagon. “You’re looking out the window and watching it burn…and you know that’s where he could have been,” Ann Marie Sharratt, former executive director of the Women in Military Service Memorial in Arlington, told TheDCNF. “Our policeman and fireman and military protect us, and they always have, so anything we can do to say thank you we should.” America’s 9/11 Ride (Steve Birr/TheDCNF) Follow Steve on Twitter Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience. 45 Morocco king urges diaspora to reject Islamist extremism The King of Morocco, Mohammed VI, has called on Moroccans living abroad, many of them in Europe, to defend a tolerant form of Islam and reject extremism. It was his first address to the five million Moroccans in the diaspora since the recent attacks in Europe by Islamist militants. European citizens of Moroccan origin were implicated in some attacks. Condemning the murder of innocent people, the king singled out the killing of a priest in France. Two followers of so-called Islamic State (IS) slit the throat of Father Jacques Hamel , 84, during Mass at his church in a suburb of Rouen. "Killing a priest is forbidden by religion," King Mohammed said in his speech on Saturday evening. "Murdering him inside a church is unforgivable madness, for he is a human being and a religious man - even if he is not a Muslim. " Two of the IS militants killed in the aftermath of the Paris attacks in November were Belgians of Moroccan origin, Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the suspected ringleader, and Chakib Akrouh, a suicide bomber. The three IS militants who bombed Brussels in March, Khalid and Ibrahim el-Bakraoui and Najim Laachraoui, were also of Moroccan origin. The king said that those who engaged in terrorism, in the name of Islam, were "not Muslims". "Their only link to Islam is the pretexts they use to justify their crimes and their folly," he said. "They have strayed from the right path, and their fate is to dwell forever in hell. " Extremists, the Moroccan monarch said, were exploiting young Muslims to spread misleading messages about Islam and distort its peaceful values. "They think - out of ignorance - that they are engaging in jihad," he said. "Since when has jihad been synonymous with killing innocent people? The Almighty says: 'Do not transgress limits, for Allah loves not transgressors.' "Is it conceivable that God... could order someone to blow himself up or kill innocent people? Islam, as a matter of fact, does not permit any kind of suicide - whatever the reasons or circumstances. " Under Mohammed VI, the Moroccan monarchy has taken on a more modern, reformist image. 2016-08-21 17:42 www.bbc.co.uk

Greece bans blood donations in 12 districts over malaria Twelve districts of Greece have banned blood donations because of malaria, with four cases this year contracted domestically, local media report. In the 61 other cases recorded, the sufferers became infected on the Indian subcontinent and African states, where the disease is endemic. The districts affected stretch from the Peloponnese to Thessaloniki. Domestic cases were first reported four years ago - nearly four decades after the disease was wiped out in Greece. Budget cuts saw municipal spraying schemes to combat mosquito-borne diseases being cut back. Malaria is caused by a parasite called plasmodium which initially hides in the liver before going into the bloodstream and infecting the red blood cells which carry oxygen around the body. The parasites breed and burst out of red blood cells every 48 to 72 hours and each eruption of parasites is accompanied by a bout of fever, chills and sweating. The parasites are spread from person to person by mosquitoes when they drink blood. A single bite from the high-pitched whining insects is all it can take to become infected. Read on The Hellenic Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO) and the National Centre for Blood Donation both issued warnings, according to Greek news sites Kathimerini and Iefimerida (in Greek) . The 12 districts affected are Farkadona, Trikala, Palamas, Tempe, Achaean and Thebes (central Greece); Evrotas and Andravida-Kyllini (Peloponnesus); Chalcis (Euboea); Marathon (Attica); and Lagada and Pylaia (Thessaloniki region). According to KEELPNO data, 65 cases of malaria had been detected in Greece this year as of mid-August, compared to 85 for the whole of last year: By comparison, the UK registered 1,400 cases of malaria in 2015 , all of them imported. Stringent rules govern blood donations from people who have been infected with malaria. In the US, for example, they may not donate blood for three years after treatment.

Tragically Hip: Why Canada was closed for the final farewell The Olympics really were no match. There was only one show in town, sorry, in the nation on Saturday night. Canada's national broadcaster CBC broke from Rio to air the whole of The Tragically Hip's final gig live. They advertised it as "A National Celebration", and they weren't wrong. Only about 7,000 fans had actually managed to cram into the K-Rock Centre in Kingston, Ontario. Kingston - the home town of Gordon Edgar "Gord" Downie, whose announcement in May that he had terminal brain cancer had caused shock across the nation. It's perhaps hard for those outside Canada to understand just how big the band are there. They are known as the most Canadian band in the world. They are simply a part of the national identity. Look at the picture of Kingston's Springer Market square on Saturday night and it starts to make sense. Nine number one albums in Canada, 14 Juno awards (Canada's tribute to its musicians) and this final 15-concert Man Machine Poem tour to say farewell. Kingston had declared Saturday The Tragically Hip Day. #Canadaisclosed was the mantra, as was "Hip Night in Canada" and, of course, #InGordWeTrust. At how many concerts will the audience rise from their seats to sing a spontaneous version of the national anthem before the band start? And the concert itself? A three-hour set spanning some three decades of music-making and cramming in crowd favourites such as Nautical Disaster, New Orleans is Sinking, Bobcaygeon and the final hurrah of Ahead by a Century. A denim jacket-clad Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was there. Gord was not about to miss the opportunity to get his message across, urging the PM to address the historical mistreatment of indigenous people. But he also said Mr Trudeau was "going to take us where we need to go". The fans also hung on every word of Gord, who provided his traditional cultural and social commentary. In the end he kept it simple. After an "unchartered" third encore, it was an emotional and brief "thank you for that". Arm in arm, Downie, Rob Baker, Paul Langlois, Gord Sinclair and Johnny Fay walked off for the last time. One concert-goer, probably speaking for many, said the band had provided a "soundtrack of our lives". And CBC eventually went back to the Olympics... but even then it managed to post a montage video of athletes battling away to the sound of The Hip's track Three Pistols .

Exposed: Tycoon splurged Mandela funeral millions on cars, jewellery The Sunday Times can today reveal that politically connected businessman Mabheleni Ntuli was paid R18-million by an events management company owned by businesswoman Carol Bouwer, who enlisted Ntuli as a subcontractor to supply infrastructure for memorial services for Mandela in December 2013 across Mpumalanga. Bouwer's company, Carol Bouwer Productions, had been paid R39-million by the Mpumalanga provincial government as the main contractor to organise memorial services to mark Mandela's death. While the payment has been reported on before, details of how it was spent are only emerging now. The money trail seen by the Sunday Times shows that Bouwer subsequently paid out four tranches of R4.5-million each into the bank account of Dartingo Trading 20, a company solely owned by the flamboyant Ntuli. Carol Bouwer's company had allegedly been paid R39-million by the Mpumalanga provincial government to organise memorial services to mark Mandela's death. Image: Gallo Images Before the payments the account had a balance of less than R5,000. Some of the money was later paid from this account to the bank account of one of President Jacob Zuma's wives, Nompumelelo "MaNtuli" Ntuli-Zuma. Ntuli, a well-known businessman in Durban, is known to have donated to Zuma trusts in the past. The Hawks have confirmed that they are investigating a case of fraud and corruption related to tenders awarded by the Mpumalanga government for Mandela memorial services. "The matter is with the anticorruption task team and the docket is sitting with the prosecutor for further advice," said Hawks spokesman Hangwani Mulaudzi. "We are investigating the whole case and process. We are looking at what transpired during that time and out of that we will be able to determine who will be prosecuted. "The investigation is ongoing. Most of the documents have been collected, so the issue now is that we are waiting for the prosecutor to give further instructions, if there are [any], and then a decision will be taken if they proceed with a prosecution or not. " The Hawks launched the investigation following a complaint reportedly lodged by the National Treasury after Bouwer's company was appointed without any tender process being followed. The speed with which payments were made to her in December 2013 also raised questions. This is the latest development in a series of scandals related to the fraudulent use of public money around Mandela memorials. In 2014 the Hawks prosecuted top government leaders and senior ANC figures in Buffalo City in the Eastern Cape for fraud related to millions of rands spent on events to mourn Mandela. It has been established that, just days after receiving payment, Ntuli went on a shopping spree at the SMD Group motor dealership in Ballito, north of Durban, which sells Jaguars, Land Rovers, BMWs and other luxury vehicles. Ntuli made three payments amounting to R5-million to the dealership. It could not be verified which cars he bought, but it has been established that on two separate occasions Ntuli spent R2-million at the dealership. In one other instance he spent R1-million. In the same period Ntuli splurged another R1-million at the SMG Umhlanga Rocks dealership. He also forked out more than R445,000 at jewellery retailer Arthur Kaplan and R42,000 at a Louis Vuitton shop. Ntuli made a R55,000 payment to MaNtuli on December 31. MaNtuli's lawyer, Ulrich Roux, said she had explained that the payment was a gift and that there were many others. Politically connected businessman Mabheleni Ntuli was paid R18-million by an events company to supply infrastructure for the Mandela memorial events. Image: Supplied When Ntuli was contacted this week for clarity on the payment to MaNtuli and his relationship to her, he initially denied giving her money but later confirmed that he had. "I am not related to her, we just share the same surname. Why should I give her money?... There are so many people that I have paid money to... What is wrong with that, because she is not the only one, what about the other people? I know her, we share the same surname. I don't look at her profile to give her money," said Ntuli. Ntuli said he deserved to spoil himself after being paid as he had rendered services. "I never bought a car for anyone ... I don't know if it is wrong to buy a car... once you have been paid for everything there is nothing wrong with buying a car ... I don't ask you, after your employer has paid you, why you spend your money at Shoprite... You asked me about the payment I made to MaNtuli, how do you know about it if you didn't get into the account? That is not fair," said Ntuli. He said he was not aware of any investigation, and if there was, Bouwer should be its subject. Roux said: " She and Mr Ntuli have obviously been close friends for a number of years. They are not family members but in her culture they regard each other as family even though they are not blood family. She is very close to him and that has never been a secret. "The payment that she received, she said she never questioned it and she regarded it as a gift, she can't even remember what it was used for because it was a long time ago. "I am sure if you look deeper into his bank statements there would have been other payments made to her as well and that to her it is nothing she needed to question, it would have been her requesting something and he would have paid it and that is it. " Corruption Watch executive director David Lewis said MaNtuli should account for the payment that was made by Ntuli into her account. "It is something that has to be explained. It is not enough to just say that it was a gift," said Lewis. Bouwer, who rose to fame in the '90s as an actor in the popular soapie Generations, said she had paid Ntuli as a subcontractor as per their agreement. "We had a contract with him and he delivered on everything that we asked for and we paid him accordingly. I wouldn't claim that somebody delivered on something that he didn't deliver on. I am very forthcoming with information because I have nothing to hide... I am not aware of the Hawks' investigation. I will have to be careful about what I relay in... public. " Some of the money was allegedly later paid from Mabheleni Ntuli's account to Nompumelelo "MaNtuli" Ntuli-Zuma. Image: Gallo Images/Foto24 She said she had co-operated with the Treasury and submitted documents regarding her subcontractors to the Mpumalanga provincial government. "I think in the beginning stages of there being some rumours about impropriety, National Treasury did get in touch with us... What I said was that I submitted the documents to the province, which were the people I was contracted to. I gave the information to the province to comply. What happened subsequent to that, I don't get involved," said Bouwer. But a government insider with intimate knowledge of the case being investigated told the Sunday Times that there had been no co-operation from the provincial government when the Treasury requested documents. The Sunday Times understands there was some political pressure for Bouwer to work with the politically connected Durban businessman. But Bouwer denied this, saying that Ntuli was the only person who could provide the infrastructure she needed at short notice. It is understood that Ntuli threw his weight around during the events, mentioning his political connections. A source who wished to remain anonymous said the R18-million charged by Ntuli was inflated and that the events should have cost much less. "There was no way that costing could have been that much. Those were smaller venues," said the source. [email protected]

Architects guitarist Tom Searle dies after battle with cancer Architects guitarist Tom Searle has died, aged 28, after a battle with cancer. A post by his twin brother Dan on the band's Facebook page said Tom had been living with cancer for three years. "In the last two weeks it suddenly took a turn for the worse and finally he left us," he wrote. "He spent the last two months fighting with everything he had to overcome the disease and things appeared to be moving in the right direction. " The metal band from Brighton are regularly played on the Radio 1 Rock show with Daniel P Carter. He posted a simple 'X' on Twitter after finding out about Tom's death. https://www.instagram.com/p/BFuDU1aC0qP/ "He was an incredible songwriter and guitarist," Dan wrote. He was my closest and oldest friend. He was a funny, intelligent and sweet man and he leaves an enormous void in all of our lives. " The band will continue on their tour with a UK and European headline slot starting in October. In June, they cancelled their North American headline tour. https://www.instagram.com/p/BGwwNZfi0l9 "We hope that these shows will be an opportunity for everyone out there to show their respects to my wonderful brother. It won't be easy for us to get on stage and play every night without him, but its something that we must do. " But it's unclear what will happen after that. "I don't know what will become of Architects," Dan posted. "Me and Tom started playing in a band together when we were 13 and, really, Architects is just an evolution of the band that we started all the way back then, over half my life ago. "To pretend that Tom wasn't at the heart of everything that the band created would be to show a complete lack of respect to the amazing talent that he was. " https://twitter.com/danarchitects/status/767320761774276608 "The band will never be the same and there is simply no denying it," he continued. "We want to carry on, that is important to say, and we will strive to do so, but we will not release any music unless we truly believe that it is something that Tom would have been proud of. "Whether or not we can achieve that is something that we will have to discover in time. 52 Six sea deaths around Britain lead to safety calls The Coastguard has urged holidaymakers and swimmers to be aware of lifeguards' warnings and changeable weather after six people died in seas around Britain. Strong winds and high tides are feared to be behind the deaths of three men, two women and a young boy in Cornwall, Aberdeen, Dorset, Essex and Jersey. The UK Coastguard says people should be careful around surging waves. "Do listen to warnings and stay at a safe distance from the water," said James Instance from the agency. The first of the deaths this weekend happened on Friday afternoon when high waves knocked a family off rocks on a Cornish beach, and swept them out to sea. Rudy and Lisinda Bruynius and their two-year-old daughter were rescued but the Mr Bruynius died later in hospital. Their daughter Mckayla is still in hospital, reported to be in a serious condition. The couple's two sons had managed to scramble back on to rocks at South Fistral Beach, in Newquay. Coastguards dealing with the rescue said the sea had gone from normal to a swell of up to 10ft in an hour, which had caught people off guard. Around midday on Saturday, a windsurfer died after getting into difficulties off the Essex coast. The man, in his 60s, was rescued off the beach at West Mersea and airlifted to hospital, but later died. And several hours later, lifeguards went to the rescue of a swimmer caught up in rough seas near Poole in Dorset. The man had gone outside a safety zone at Sandbanks as winds picked up to gale force eight, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said. He was pronounced dead at the scene and has not yet been formally identified. Later that day, in Aberdeen, two brothers were paddling in the water when they were swept away. Their mother and others tried to save them, but they too had to be rescued. Five of them were taken to hospital but the mother, Julie Walker, and her six-year-old son Lucas from Aberdeen did not survive. Police Scotland praised Lucas' older brother, Samuel, who tried to rescue Lucas and his mother. Samuel is making a steady recovery in hospital, police have said. A man and a woman, who were also rescued, have been discharged from hospital. On Saturday night, a sixth person lost their life off the Jersey coast, where a high tide and strong winds had made sea conditions treacherous. Two swimmers had got into difficulty off Green Island - the man was rescued by a member of the public; the woman was picked up by an RNLI lifeboat and taken to hospital but later died. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency advises holidaymakers to: • Stay away from areas where there are surging waves • Be careful of tides - the agency says it is "easy to become cut off and strong wind conditions will mean that the sea will reach higher levels than expected" • Heed warnings from lifeguards

Extremist prisoners 'may be separated' from other inmates Violent extremist prisoners could be held in separate special units inside jails under government plans to stop other inmates being radicalised. Justice Secretary Liz Truss will reveal the new measures on Monday, following a review into extremism in prisons led by former prison governor Ian Acheson. One of his key recommendations was to "incapacitate" violent extremists by keeping them away from other prisoners. His report will only be published in summary for security reasons. But it is understood to be critical of the current system in which extremist inmates are dispersed across eight high-security prisons. Last month, Mr Acheson told the Commons justice select committee there was a small of number of prisoners who needed to be kept apart from other inmates because their "pernicious ideology" could be "magnified inside prison, particularly when you have a supply of young, impulsive and often highly violent men". The publication of the report by the senior civil servant comes only a few days after it was revealed that radical cleric Anjem Choudary had been convicted of inviting others to support the so-called Islamic State. Fears have been voiced that Choudary, who is due to be sentenced in September, would be able to influence other inmates with his views. 'Extremist' books remained in prisons despite warning Warning over Islamic radicalisation in England's prisons Ms Truss is expected to accept the separation proposal and BBC home affairs correspondent Daniel Sandford told the News Channel: "This is the policy that pre-dates the Islamist extremist era before 9/11 when we had IRA prisoners in British prisons. "They were allowed to be mixed in the general population of the high security estate. No-one has really changed that policy in the light of the massive numbers of convictions there have been in the last 15 years since 9/11. "It's clearly going to be more expensive. There are eight high-security prisons in England and Wales and if you are going to need to have a unit in all or at least some of those, that's going to be an extra cost. "You're going to have to have separate feeding systems, separate exercising regimes, separate ways of working, separate education systems so it's not that easy. " Ms Truss is likely to announce other measures to clamp down on radicalisation inside prisons. She said: "The rise of Islamist extremism poses an existential threat to our society. I am committed to confronting and countering the spread of this poisonous ideology behind bars. "Preventing the most dangerous extremists from radicalising other prisoners is essential to the safe running of our prisons and fundamental to public protection. " The idea of having a separate prison within a prison is not new - similar recent changes have been made in France, while prisoners were also separated in Northern Ireland's Maze prison in the 1980s.

Rehovot residents irate after 12-hour cessation in water supply It’s not every day that an environmental reporter buys a six-pack of bottled mineral water to take a shower. The municipality of Rehovot had warned its inhabitants about a week in advance that citywide water outages would occur between 10 p.m. Saturday night and 6 a.m. Sunday morning. Disgruntled but deferential, residents dutifully filled up old bottles with water in preparation, as a municipal vehicle armed with a loudspeaker made rounds throughout the city just before the clock struck 10. Be the first to know - Join our Facebook page. The Rehovot municipality, through its newly independent water corporation Habeer Hashlishit and the Netivei Ayalon company, announced that it would be shutting off the water during these hours in order to duplicate the city’s principal water pipeline and connect it to the Mekorot national water company’s main line. The news was delivered to individual residential mailboxes in the form of a shiny, colorful flier. With a population of about 138,000, Rehovot is located about 30 km. south of Tel Aviv, and is home to both the Weizmann Institute of Science and the Hebrew University’s agricultural campus, as well as an expansive hi-tech district and the Kaplan Medical Center. Calculating the fairly minimal number of diaper changes, toilet flushes and resultant hand washes that would occur during the 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. window, my husband and I had filled up three 1.5-liter bottles that were waiting to be recycled, as well as the Brita in the fridge, and figured we’d be fine. But as 7:30 a.m. rolled around and the faucets were still barren, the municipality updated its Facebook page saying that “two water line connections were completed with success.” Yet work was continuing on a third line, with “water expected to return gradually between 8 and 9 a.m.” While not ideal, an hour or two delay in Israeli infrastructure projects is far from surprising, so I headed to the gym for my morning workout regardless. Diaper changes, teeth brushing and other general sanitation necessities had left us with only about one pre-filled water bottle, but I was fairly confident that I would be able to shower by the time I got home. Unfortunately, my instinct was wrong. Despite another Facebook update from the municipality telling residents at about 9 a.m. that all work had concluded and that water flow would soon resume, household supplies were still nonexistent for the next couple of hours. With no choice but to shower if I wanted to breastfeed our son, I ultimately decided to buy the six-pack, and ended up using half of the bottles to clean myself. While my part of Rehovot was lucky enough to receive running water once again at about 11 a.m. – only five hours late – other areas remained dry far later into the day. Hundreds of irate commenters took to Facebook, complaining about Rehovot’s relatively high arnona (property tax) bills, accusing the city of “smelling like a public bathroom” and even blaming the municipality for a newfound inability to use the toilet. Tali Dayan Shor, who was home with her two daughters in the southern neighborhood of Rehovot Hahadasha, still had no water by early afternoon. Shor told The Jerusalem Post that she called the city for an update on the situation, only to learn that the pump to her building had been dismantled as a result of the flow resumption – a problem that the municipality blamed on her building, she said. Because the city would not take responsibility, the issue would only be able to be solved once the building supervisor arrived home, Shor explained. Since she was saving the family’s water reserve for food and emergencies, washing hands and laundry was next to impossible, she related. “I saved water for food, to wash bottles,” Shor said. “They said [the outage] would be until a specific hour, to 6 a.m.; then they said 9 a.m.; then at 9 a.m., they said 10 a.m.” At the other side of Rehovot, Florence Broder Tuizer, who lives in Rehovot’s northwestern Hahollandit neighborhood and works in hi-tech, called the situation “totally ridiculous.” “I had to brush my teeth with a bottle of water and couldn’t even wash my face properly,” she said. “I had to wait until I got work. Once again, paying high arnona for another Rehovot failure.” Describing her neighborhood as “basically neglected by the municipality,” Tuizer slammed the city’s urban planning programs. In particular, she said that the city has neither opened an interchange in her area as promised, nor repaired an alternative road that is dotted with dangerous speed bumps and lacks shoulders. Mirit Kanevsky Hemo, a 28-year-old quality assurance engineer and student, has essentially been living in Rehovot her entire life. Like Tuizer, she considered Sunday’s event just one in a long list of problems that the city faces. “What happened today is just another thing that they were supposed to do and it wasn’t done suitably,” Hemo told the Post , stressing how high arnona bills are in Rehovot. “They build new neighborhoods, but the infrastructure is not good enough.” Hemo criticized the city for failing to answer its emergency operating service that morning, stressing that with this issue and with others – such as garbage in the streets and parking problems – residents simply “have no one to turn to.” “To disconnect people for more than 12 hours [from water] is simply irresponsible,” she said. “You need to go to the bathroom or take a shower – it’s a basic thing, we are paying for it,” Hemo continued, noting that she brushed her teeth with bottled water. “It’s summer vacation and there are so many people with kids at home,” she added. “The timing was just absurd a time when so many people are at home.” In response to the situation, a midday statement from the city explained that the works to upgrade the system and connect the city’s main line to Mekorot had occurred overnight and during the morning. “The work was successfully completely and now the water supply is being renewed to residents,” the statement continued. While apologizing for any inconvenience, the city emphasized its efforts over the past week to keep residents updated through fliers, social media and municipal patrol cars. “At around 9 a.m., the valves were opened and the water supply was resumed,” the statement said. “Water flow to home faucets will be gradual, and with the refilling of the reservoirs, you will be able enjoy an uninterrupted and proper water supply.” Think others should know about this? 58 Scientists unravel mystery of osprey migration Tilton - Scientists have long known ospreys make an epic journey each summer from New England to South America. But the details of their dangerous trip remained a mystery - until now. Thanks to trackers on the backs of these fish-eating raptors, scientists are filling in the picture. And what they are learning is troubling. The brown-and-white birds get hit by cars and ships, shot by angry chicken farmers and blown off course during hurricane season. One even ended up on a ship that took it to Portugal. By some accounts, up to 80% of the young birds making the trip don't return to New England - compared to 15% of adults. "Some of them make it to South America. A lot of them don't," said Iain MacLeod , executive director of the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center in Holderness, New Hampshire, who studies ospreys that spend their spring and summers in the state raising their young. Despite migration troubles, ospreys are experiencing a resurgence similar to bald eagles: from a low of a few hundred osprey pairs in the 1970s in New England to as many as 2 000 pairs currently, including 1 000 in Maine. Some of the recovery results from a ban on pesticides like DDT as well as measures such as guards on nests to keep out raccoons and other predators that eat their eggs. Adult osprey can live up to two decades. Starting in August, the birds travel more than 8 000km down the Atlantic Coast and across the Caribbean before they end up in the northern part of South America and the Amazon basin, where they spend the winter. Scores of male birds have been equipped with trackers, nearly 500 so far in the United States and Europe. The matchbox-size devices use miniature GPS-enabled transmitters to show the birds' precise location, altitude, speed and time it takes for them to complete the trip. First used in 1995, the devices provide a detailed map of the route taken by the birds, including pit stops in Rhode Island and Florida. Juvenile ospreys on Martha's Vineyard, too, were tracked crossing nearly 1 600km of ocean on their way to Bermuda. The trackers show most birds go through a narrow route across the island of Hispaniola that includes the Dominican Republic and Haiti and then onwards over Cuba. "All of the birds are funnelling through a very narrow area," said Rob Bierregaard , an ornithologist at Drexel University in Philadelphia who has tagged ospreys with MacLeod. "If something bad happens there, they could be vulnerable," he said. "You got your eggs all in one basket if you will... If something bad happened in Cuba, virtually all the East Coast and a lot of Midwest ospreys would be exposed to that. " 'House hunting' Should they make it across the Caribbean, the birds, especially juveniles on their first trip, face challenges finding a wintering spot. While the experienced birds typically return to the same safe location every year, the young birds spend several months "house hunting" over a range from Venezuela to Brazil, where they can find plenty of fish. That can often get them killed. "When they hit South America, they are kind of clueless," MacLeod said, adding that search can often lead to conflicts with other predators or humans especially fish farm workers. "We can literally see them go to a fish farm and you go, 'Oh, no, don't stay there!'" What the trackers can't tell scientists is how the young birds manage to find their way to the wintering ground and how they know when to stop. Since they are flying blindly and doing it alone with no help from their parents, scientists suspect they may be using the Earth's magnetic field to guide them and an internal clock that tells them they have arrived. "The young birds flying over the Atlantic from Martha's Vineyard on their first trip fly this amazing straight line for 24 to 36 hours with no land marks and they are correcting for wind drift," Bierregaard said. "They have some magnetic sense where they are based on magnetic fields. We don't understand how they do that... It's fascinating. "

ANC’s Dan Bovu denies EFF claim of bribery – threatens defamation suit In a startling claim on Sunday‚ the Economic Freedom Fighters accused Bovu‚ the outgoing Member of the Mayoral Committee for Housing for Johannesburg‚ of calling its councillors and “offering them money to the value of R500‚000 in exchange for them to vote with the ANC during the elections of the Johannesburg City Council tomorrow”. The EFF said it would be opening a case of bribery against Bovu‚ the outgoing Member of the Mayoral Committee for Housing for Johannesburg. It warned that its votes were not up for sale – “be it money or positions”. However‚ Bovu denied the claim and accused the EFF of “desperate grandstanding”. In a statement‚ he said: “I have noted with great concern the serious‚ defamatory and spurious allegations of bribery that the EFF is making against me to bribe their Johannesburg councillors. It must be stated that I have never met EFF councillors nor have I offered anyone bribes to vote with the ANC. I intend to open a case of defamation against my character by the EFF.” Bovu added that since the election results were announced‚ the ANC had been in dialogue with other parties who were clear that they did not represent an agenda that sought to reverse the democratic gains the ANC had achieved since 1994. “My understanding is that the desperate grandstanding of the EFF is due to what happened in Rustenburg on Friday‚ where smaller parties rallied around the ANC to form a partnership of cooperation‚ thus rejecting the EFF and their coalition with their bedfellows‚ the DA‚” Bovu asserted. Johannesburg is one of the many hung councils throughout the country following the recent local government elections‚ with the ANC having garnered 44.5% of the vote to the Democratic Alliance’s 38.37%. The EFF received 11.09% while the Inkatha Freedom Fighters got 1.72%. The EFF has rejected coalitions with other opposition parties but has stated that it will vote with the DA in hung councils. However‚ it stated that it would not vote with the DA in Johannesburg unless it withdraws renowned businessman Herman Mashaba as its mayoral candidate for the metro.

Top bankers welcome Urijit Patel's appointment as RBI Governor A strong likelihood of continuity in policies was the biggest draw for top bankers, as they welcomed the appointment of Urjit Patel as the 24th Governor of the Reserve Bank. "Patel has played a key role in developing the new monetary policy framework that has focused on reining in inflation and imparted stability to the currency," country's largest private sector lender ICICI Bank's managing director and CEO Chanda Kochhar said. "His appointment would ensure a smooth transition and continuity in monetary policy, as India puts in place major structural reforms to transition to a higher growth path," she added. The Government yesterday announced the appointment of Patel as the next Governor of RBI. He succeeds the charismatic and outspoken Raghuram Rajan, who surprised all by his decision of returning to academia and opting out of being considered for a second term. A committee headed by Patel had suggested the path to get inflation down to 4 per cent in the medium term and a glide path to achieve it. "Being an architect of the new policy framework, he retains high credibility for monetary stability. He also combines the strengths of a global perspective and a solid academic background," Shikha Sharma, MD and CEO of Axis Bank said. With frequent detailing of the uneasy relationship between the RBI Governor with the Finance Ministry, Sharma said Patel's expertise in fiscal policy will serve as a "bridge between RBI and Government". State Bank of India's chairman Arundhati Bhattacharya, who was speculated to be one of the probable names to replace Rajan, also welcomed the Government's decision. "Patel has been at the helm of institutionalising the inflation targeting regime in the monetary policy framework. His appointment signals continuity of policy intent, both on part of RBI and Government," she said. Rana Kapoor, the chief of Yes Bank exuded confidence that it will be a smooth transition from Rajan to Patel. "Patel is an astute economist with a clear vision, who will surely continue to de-risk the Indian economy and strike the fine balance between growth imperatives and inflation management," he said.

Ventotene summit to chart roadmap for EU's response to Brexit vote The leaders of the eurozone’s three largest countries will meet on a small southern Italian island on Monday for further talks on the way forward for the European Union following Britain’s shock vote to leave. Italy’s prime minister, Matteo Renzi, will welcome the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, and the French president, François Hollande , to Ventotene off the coast of Naples for a second round of trilateral talks before an informal EU summit in September. The meeting aims “to show the unity of Europe’s three biggest countries, but not to create a specific club”, French diplomatic sources said, adding that the main goal was to prepare the informal Bratislava summit to map out a post-Brexit course for the bloc. Renzi chose the island because of its part in the foundation of the EU, the Italian government said. Imprisoned there during the second world war, two Italian intellectuals, Ernesto Rossi and Altiero Spinelli, wrote the influential “Ventotene manifesto” calling for a federation of European states. Spinelli is buried on the island and the three leaders will lay a wreath on his tomb, the government statement said. At their first talks soon after Britain stunned the union in late June by voting to leave, Hollande, Merkel and Renzi called for “a new impulse” for the EU. Renzi said last month that the Brexit vote represented “a political defeat” for Europe and a “wake-up call” that showed urgent reform was needed. EU states are divided on what direction the bloc should take to counter mounting Euroscepticism, of which the Brexit vote is the most dramatic example. Brussels and other capitals fear calls for similar in/out referendums could multiply, most imminently in the Netherlands. Berlin has made plain it wants “better Europe” rather than “more Europe”, with finance minister Wolfgang Schäuble urging member states to be pragmatic and take an intergovernmental approach to solving the bloc’s problems. “The goal must first of all be to preserve the status quo and to prevent a further disintegration of the EU-27,” one EU diplomat said. The three leaders also differ over how to boost the eurozone’s flagging economy, with Hollande and Renzi both broadly backing more investment and greater harmonisation, but Merkel anxious to preserve the bloc’s integrity and above all not undermine its deficit and debt rules. The last time the three leaders met as a trio, in the week following Britain’s vote to leave, the German chancellor had signalled her lack of enthusiasm for “quantum leaps” towards further EU integration, warning that “any measure that strengthens the centrifugal forces already plaguing Europe could have unpredictable consequences”. For Merkel, the meeting is the start of a week of whirlwind diplomacy that will see her meeting heads of state in Tallin, Prague and Warsaw before hosting first the leaders of the Netherlands, Finland, Sweden and Denmark, and then the presidents of Slovenia, Bulgaria and Croatia at Schloss Meseberg, a baroque castle outside Berlin. The fallout from the Brexit referendum is expected to feature near the top of the diplomatic agenda for most of the week. While the question of similar breakaway movements in other northern European member states is expected to be raised at Saturday’s get-together, Merkel’s tour of central and eastern Europe is designed to scope out common ground on changes to freedom of movement and the future of EU citizens based in UK. Poland and Hungary, two of the biggest net beneficiaries of the EU budget, face cuts in subsidies when Britain formally secedes from the European Union. Also on the Ventatone agenda are likely to be internal and external security questions prompted by the recent string of Islamist militant attacks, and Europe’s migration crisis. The leaders are unlikely, however, to discuss specifics on Britain’s exit until London has decided what kind of new trade deal it wants.

Mayor Tau's bus parked... for now Speaking on Sunday at the party's regional offices in Johannesburg‚ Tau‚ in his capacity as ANC regional chairperson‚ said the future of the City of Joburg being controlled by the ANC or opposition parties‚ remained to be seen. "We are still in discussions and in fact those discussions will be ongoing even today. The discussions themselves have taken place at different levels and some of the parties have said they want to take a national position but that all depends on what is at stake and what their programmes are… but some parties said they are prepared to engage at a local level‚" said Tau. This comes as a crucial inaugural sitting of the council for the 2016-2021 term of office is sscheduled to be held on Monday when the swearing in of all 270 councillors‚ Chief Whip of Council‚ the election of Speaker of Council and executive mayor of the City will take place. "It has been very difficult… We've had to coordinate between ourselves‚ province and national [executive committees]. But I can confirm that the last set of discussions took place at a local level. We are now completely responsible for all the discussions taking place in the City of Johannesburg with other political parties‚" said Tau. The Regional Executive Committee collectively laughed when a question was posed to them regarding having confidence in any opposition party running the City‚ saying all political parties have their own ideologies. "Running a City always depends on what you are trying to do with the City… So it's an ideological issue [and] whoever comes in and runs it with their own ideology in mind… with their own political ideology in mind… and what they emphasise and think is important‚ would be different from us‚" Tau replied. Out of the 135 wards that make up the economic hub of South Africa‚ the ANC won 84 of them. This represents 62% of the constituency that has given the ruling party a mandate to continue to lead the City of Joburg. According to Tau‚ who was flanked by regional secretary Dada Morero and regional treasurer Geoffrey Makhubo‚ the ANC in the City has committed to continue serving the people of the City of Gold even if it means sitting in opposition benches. “Whether in government or in opposition‚ this is the position of the committee.” This view is held by Tshwane regional chairperson Kgosientso Ramokgopa who last week on Thursday told reporters that "our ability to be in constant touch with the masses‚ ensures that we collectively express and resolve the challenges that get to confront our people on a daily basis".

'Explosives found at Lebanon border were part of Hezbollah terror plot' A bag full of explosives located in a wooded area of Metulla near the Lebanese border last month was smuggled into Israel by Hezbollah, the defense establishment now believes. Defense sources estimate that the explosives were smuggled into Israel from Lebanon with the intention of being used in a terror attack. Be the first to know - Join our Facebook page. A Hezbollah "courier" was likely supposed to collect the explosives, however a local farmer found the bag first, spoiling the plot. Authorities originally believed that the explosives belonged to local criminals, however an investigation led to the assessment that Hezbollah was the actual culprit. The Shi'ite terror organization regularly attempts to smuggle explosives and drugs over the border into Israel. The majority of these attempts are thwarted by intelligence information and the alertness of IDF patrols in the area. As Israel and Hezbollah marked ten years since 2006's Second Lebanon War earlier this month, the terrorist group's leader, Hassan Nasrallah, warned against a possible rekindling of hostilities . “Israel knows that there is no location in the country that is not in Hezbollah’s cross-hairs,” Nasrallah said in a video broadcast. 68 Black Americans are less likely to be prescribed painkillers – why? W e know that pain thresholds vary from person to person – one person’s nudging inconvenience is another’s unbearable distraction – but the colour of your skin, in the US at least, can be a factor in deciding whether or not you receive pain medication. New research from the US shows that black patients who arrive at emergency rooms complaining of back or abdominal pain are significantly less likely to be given opioid painkillers, such as codeine, than their white counterparts, even when pain levels and insurance coverage are the same. Pain is the most common reason Americans visit the ER, and the researchers in Boston looked at five years’ worth of records across the country for patients who had complained of general pain with an unclear cause. This effect has been found across healthcare settings – black children with appendicitis are significantly less likely get any painkillers for moderate pain or opioid-type drugs for severe pain. Doctors from the University of Pennsylvania reviewed 20 years’ worth of studies in 2012 and found the same, calling this “the treatment gap”. The review’s lead author, Dr Salimah Meghani, says that to stop the disparity, doctors need to be educated about its cause, and this is most likely unconscious bias. The problem, she says, “may be addressed by helping health providers identify their blind spots”. In April, another study found that half the white medical students surveyed believed at least one false statement about black people having “thicker skin”, “faster-coagulating blood” or “less sensitive nerve endings”. Medics who believed one of these facts also rated black pain lower when viewing case studies. Authors of this research believed it was down to these entrenched ideas about “biological differences” between races that may be informing doctors’ decisions on when to prescribe. Dr Austin Leach, a pain medicine consultant who serves on the council of the British Pain Society , says there is no biological reason for different prescriptions. “Physiological studies suggest that pain perception is the same across ethnicities,” he says, adding that there is no evidence that this happens in the UK. Some races are predisposed to certain illnesses – the rate of strokes for African Americans is double that of the country’s white population – but the treatment of pain should be the same. In this latest study, researchers claim that a particular type of unconscious bias – assuming that black patients are abusing meds – is to blame, despite the fact that opioid abuse is more prevalent in white communities . The study’s lead author, Dr Astha Singhal, a professor at Boston University, says the key point is that they found a discrepancy only in vague pain- related conditions, commonly associated with drug-seeking behaviour, rather than conditions with obvious causes, such as bone fractures. “While the disparity we found is surely not a good thing, it might have indirect advantage to the black patients of minimising their exposure to opioids,” she says. The theory that black communities are being “shielded” from opioid addiction by not being prescribed the drugs in the first place is a controversial one. Other studies have shown that diagnosis of issues from back pain to cancer is slower for black patients. The line is unclear to many doctors, including Singhal. “It raises the question – is it still an advantage if the cost is bearing untreated or undertreated pain?” 2016-08-21 15:00 Grace Rahman www.theguardian.com

'There's always a story': Baltimore residents share struggles as police listen Standing in front of a room of nearly 100 police officers and cadets in the police academy, Heaven Godley told the story of the first time he was arrested, when he was 17 years old. He said his mother sent him to the store for groceries and an officer stopped him on his way home. When he told the officer his name was Heaven Godley, the officer didn’t believe him and knocked the bag from his hand. Godley ran towards his house, where he was stopped at gunpoint and arrested for disorderly conduct. “They locked me up. When I was younger, I wanted to be a police officer, but when this happened... ” he said, and trailed off. Ten years later, Godley told the officers, he was addicted to heroin and cocaine and selling drugs. The same officer approached him as he was conducting a deal, and Godley put the drugs in his mouth. The officer started choking him as another punched him in the stomach. When Godley tried to run again, the beating got worse. Three days later, when he saw a doctor in Central Booking, he was diagnosed with a fractured jaw, a concussion, and a broken finger. Godley was admittedly nervous to be recounting these stories to a room of police officers and cadets on Thursday. But he was there to talk about his experience as an addict, as part of Baltimore police commissioner Kevin Davis’s program to teach the city’s history to the officers, a majority of whom don’t live in the city of Baltimore. As Godley described the beating, most of the officers looked down. The stories could have been taken from the scathing Department of Justice report, which was released last week and presented a picture of a department that regularly made unconstitutional stops and engaged in excessive force, especially among the city’s African American population. The larger “History of Baltimore” program initiated by Davis and organized by the Open Society Institute has included units on the history and effects of segregation in the city, the LGBT community, the port, African American culture, and the faith community. “It’s important for police officers in Baltimore to know about the challenges that impact their future job for the trainees and their job as police officers,” said Davis, who stopped in for the end of the event. “If you’re more aware about the culture where you police, you’re going to be more culturally sensitive. “And I think the mistake our profession has made is we introduce a very academic cultural sensitivity curriculum on an occasional basis inside a classroom, and we preach to police officers about the necessity to be culturally sensitive and to respect other races and genders and ethnicities and sexual orientations – but that’s just a lecture. So to kind of come out and hear from people who live it and breathe it, each and every day, sticks with these cops better than the traditional lecture-style classroom.” The session on heroin tackles another problem with a long history in Baltimore. With nearly 10,000 estimated chronic users of heroin in the city, addiction is something Baltimore police see a lot of. Both ABC News and National Geographic have dubbed Baltimore the “heroin capital” of the US, accounting for roughly $165m of the $27bn national industry. “Baltimore has been struggling with heroin since the mid 1960s, and frankly, it only garnered local and national attention when it made its way out to the suburbs and started affecting people who look differently than people who live in the city,” Davis said. “So instead of just knowing that Baltimore has a heroin problem, why does it have a heroin problem and do you know any drug addicts or have you ever heard of their experiences with police officers, good, bad, or indifferent?” Even among the cadets, some already had personal experience with addiction. Asked why they wanted to join the force, one young white man who had moved from Boston said he wanted to “get drugs off the streets”. His mother was an addict and so he came to “a drug-infested town like this”. According to the DoJ report, a number of the department’s worst violations were either committed or approved of by supervisors who were trained under the “zero tolerance” policies at the height of the drug war and found it difficult to change their approach, which is one reason Davis hopes to help new recruits reach a more nuanced view. Neill Franklin, the executive director of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, said Davis was “the right leadership at the helm”. But he questioned whether Davis would be able to change the behavior of mid- level management, including sergeants, lieutenants, and district commanders. “They are the ones that are interacting with patrol officers on a daily basis and they’re the ones that pretty much control the culture.”.” But, Franklin says, you also have to work on the police union, prosecutors, public officials, and the public itself. “We’ve got five decades of fighting this failed war on drugs, and old habits are very hard to break, not just for police officers, but the public in general has a difficult time shedding the approach of the past – the get tough on crime, lock ’em up [approach],” he said. For Davis, a white commissioner who took over the top cop job when his predecessor was fired following last year’s unrest over the death of Freddie Gray, it is clear that the old way of thinking about drugs and crime does not work. “I just think we can’t expose police officers enough to all of the vices in life that attract police attention because there’s always a story behind each and every one of those vices, and I think the solution to a vice isn’t necessarily a pair of handcuffs.” The DoJ is currently working with the city and the police department to arrive at a legally binding consent decree to reform the department.

Man drowns in rough seas off Dorset coast to take weekend death toll to six Six people have drowned in the UK in two days as strong winds and high seas battered much of the British coastline. A man who got into trouble outside the safe swim area at Sandbanks beach in Poole, Dorset, on Saturday afternoon is the latest person to be confirmed to have died this weekend during rough coastal conditions. The man, who was seen having difficulties in the rip current, was recovered from the water by lifeguards who performed CPR, Dorset police said. An air ambulance and paramedics attended, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Later on Saturday, a woman’s body was recovered from treacherous seas off Jersey. Rescue boats from Jersey fire service and the RNLI were launched at about 8.20pm after two swimmers were reported to be in difficulty near Green Island beach. A male swimmer was rescued by a member of the public. The woman, who was in her 20s, was later recovered from the water and transported to hospital, where she died, Jersey police said. Also on Saturday, the bodies of a mother and her six-year-old son were recovered from the sea off Aberdeen, and a windsurfer in his 60s died after being caught in difficult conditions off West Mersea, Essex. The pair in Aberdeen were named as Julie Walker, 37, and her son Lucas. It is believed that Walker had gone into the sea to try to rescue him and another boy, 13, who had got into trouble while swimming. The second boy and two other people believed to have gone in to help, a 25-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man, were taken to hospital. On Friday, a man died after he and his family were swept off rocks into the sea in Cornwall. He was named on social media as Rudy Bruynius, who was on holiday with his wife and three children. The family had been walking at South Fistral beach in Newquay. The two boys were able to scramble back on to the rocks and Bruynius’s wife, Lisinda, was rescued on a RNLI sea scooter. The boys were treated for minor injuries. A lifeboat was deployed to rescue Bruynius and the couple’s two-year-old daughter, McKayla. The pair were airlifted to Royal Cornwall hospital, where Bruynius died. McKayla remained in a critical condition on Sunday. A crowdfunding page set up by a friend to support the family has already raised more than £16,000 . An RNLI spokesperson said crews had had an extremely busy weekend with a high number of callouts, and warned people to take care in and around water. “Essentially, the conditions we’ve got are approaching more what you’d expect in late autumn or winter in terms of the swells,” said Peter Dawes, the RNLI lifesaving services manager. “It has caught a lot of people by surprise at the end of the summer holidays. It’s bigger and worse conditions than they’re used to. “We know that more than half the people who get in trouble had no intention of getting into the water – they’re swept off rocks, falling off paths or marinas into water. They have to be aware that water is a very unforgiving environment and you really can’t afford to make a mistake.” Mark Wilson, a Met Office meteorologist, said the rough conditions on Saturday had been caused by a combination of strong winds and spring tides. “We saw an unseasonably deep area of low pressure yesterday that brought strong winds,” he said. “Because that was combined with spring tides, it led to some large waves across western areas in particular. We saw some gusts of 50-60mph. It was this combination that caused these coastal conditions.” Conditions were improving on Sunday, with the low pressure system moving away.

Hawks probing tender fraud, corruption over Mandela memorials in Mpumalanga Cape Town – The Hawks have confirmed an investigation of fraud and corruption linked to tenders for Nelson Mandela memorial services, awarded by the Mpumalanga government. Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said the investigation started as an enquiry after people came forward with information early this year. "Everybody is being investigated. We are looking at a holistic approach. We are not going to name any names," he told News24 on Sunday. "The docket is with the prosecutor and we are awaiting the NPA (National Prosecuting Authority) to give us further guidance. " According to the Sunday Times, the provincial government paid the Carol Bouwer events management company R39m to organise the services across Mpumalanga in December 2013. The company apparently sub-contracted politically connected businessman Mabheleni Ntuli to provide infrastructure at a cost of R18m. Ntuli reportedly splashed out millions on cars and jewellery. The newspaper reported that Ntuli made a payment of R55 000 to one of President Jacob Zuma’s wives, Nompumelelo Ntuli-Zuma. Her lawyer was quoted as saying that the money was a gift and that there were many others. Ntuli, who confirmed he was not related to Ma Ntuli, said he was entitled to spoil himself after rendering services.

H&M factories in Myanmar employed 14-year- old workers Swedish fashion chain H&M worked with clothing factories in Myanmar where children as young as 14 toiled for more than 12 hours a day, according to a book being published in Sweden next week. “They employed anyone who wanted to work,” Zu Zu, one of the girls who started work aged 14, told the authors of Modeslavar , or Fashion Slaves in English. Writers Moa Kärnstrand and Tobias Andersson Akerblom met with 15-year- old girls who were working until 10pm in breach of Myanmar’s laws and the international labour convention. The girls were working for two factories, Myanmar Century Liaoyuan Knitted Wear and Myanmar Garment Wedge, both near the capital, Yangon. H&M said it had taken action with both factories over ID-cards and overtime after being made aware that a group of 14- to 17-year-olds had been working long hours since 2013. However, it said in a statement: “When 14– to 18-year-olds are working it is therefore not a case of child labour, according to international labour laws. ILO instead stresses the importance of not excluding this age group from work in Myanmar. H&M does of course not tolerate child labour in any form.” The revelations raise new fears about conditions in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma , where British retailers including Marks & Spencer, Tesco, Primark and New Look who have joined H&M, C&A, Aldi and Gap in recent years. Erinch Sahan, from Oxfam, which carried out research into working conditions in Myanmar factories last year, said the charity had not looked into child labour but had found a high prevalence of forced overtime and low pay. “I am not hugely surprised these problems are happening given the scale of disempowerment of workers in Myanmar,” Sahan said. Last year, the Myanmar government set a minimum wage of 3,600 kyat (£2.30) for an eight-hour day , one of the lowest in the world. All of the British retailers contacted by said they had policies in place which banned their suppliers from using child labour – classed as 14 in developing countries under International Labour Organisation (ILO) recommendations, although it says children aged 13 to 15 may do light work, as long as it does not threaten their health and safety, or hinder their education. Marks & Spencer, which works with three factories in Myanmar, said its suppliers were only allowed to employ over-18s. New Look and Primark said workers in its factories had to be over 16, and all this was checked through regular visits and other measures. They all said they did not use the factories highlighted by Modeslaver. Tesco said only that it did not allow child labour. H&M said: “It is of utmost importance to us that our products are made under good working conditions and with consideration to safety, health and the environment. We have therefore taken action regarding two suppliers in Myanmar which have had problems with ID-cards and overtime.” The retailer added that the revelation that teenagers had been working long hours at its suppliers’ factories violating international recommendations and local rules was “unacceptable”. “Any overtime must be in accordance with legislation as well as our own demands, this is particularly important when it comes to the age group 14– 18. If a supplier doesn’t live up to our standards or national legislation we – in accordance with our routines – demand that the supplier immediately establishes an action plan, which has been done also in this case. One of the measures concerning the two suppliers in question is improved recruitment routines, which has resulted in improved handling of ID-cards,” the H&M said. Myanmar Century Liaoyuan Knitted Wear and Myanmar Garment Wedge did not respond to requests for comment.

Ipswich and Norwich settle for a point apiece in entertaining East Anglian derby Jonas Knudsen ensured local bragging rights were shared between Ipswich and Norwich as an entertaining East Anglian derby at Portman Road ended 1-1. Norwich missed out on the chance to go top of the Sky Bet Championship after Cameron Jerome's 26th- minute opener. Left-back Knudsen scored only his second goal of his Ipswich career on the stroke of half-time before Steven Whittaker had a shot cleared off the line for the visitors and Teddy Bishop went close for Town in the dying stages. Ipswich started on the front foot and were almost ahead after two minutes, and possibly should have been, when Jonathan Douglas had the ball in the net but it was ruled out for offside. Minutes later, should have grabbed the game's first goal but dragged his shot wide of the far post after Knudsen's ball over the top. Ipswich were on top and they again went close in the 18th minute. Grant Ward's cross was directed goalwards by Murphy and Norwich goalkeeper Michael McGovern was relieved to see the header go just over the crossbar. McGovern was then equal to Murphy after the striker met ' cross with his head halfway through the first half. Against the run of play, Norwich took the lead as Ivo Pinto outmuscled Freddie Sears down the right and his low cross saw Wes Hoolahan and Jonathan Howson combine for Jerome to calmly stroke the ball home off the inside of the post. Steven Naismith almost found the top corner with a sharp first-time effort after more good work from Pinto in the 37th minute before Ipswich grabbed an equaliser in first-half stoppage time. Murphy and Sears combined to lay the ball to Knudsen who cut back and hit a perfect low shot with his weaker right foot which gave McGovern no chance. The second half started a little less frantic before Howson cleared 's header at Norwich's near post and Adam Webster stopped a certain goal, heading Whittaker's miss-hit shot off his line. Although the game was less open than the first half, only the width of the post stopped Norwich from regaining the lead in the 74th minute. Jerome did brilliantly on the right wing to work an opening and his cross was poorly cleared by Webster straight to Whittaker, the right- back just failing to score when his low shot cannoned off the woodwork. With two minutes remaining, Whittaker almost became the villain after he dallied on the ball in his own area. Substitute Bishop dispossessed him but his shot was brilliantly blocked by the onrushing McGovern. Hoolahan and Jacob Murphy both had chances to write themselves into East Anglian folklore in injury time but it ended honours even.

Burnley's Andre Gray sorry after dream day becomes nightmare of his own creation Burnley striker Andre Gray was haunted by his past on the day he achieved his dream of scoring for the first time in the Premier League. The 25-year-old sprung out of non-league football two years ago when leaving Luton for Brentford, and since a switch to Burnley 12 months later he has become a key Claret. Gray said it felt "crazy" to hit the back of the net for the first time in the top flight, after netting in the 2-0 win over Liverpool, but the goal was soon overshadowed when it came to light that he had posted homophobic tweets four years ago. He apologised in a statement on Saturday night and asked for "forgiveness", saying he was a changed man to the one who put up the messages. Gray was playing non-league football for Hinckley when he posted the offensive tweets. One of the messages read: "Is it me or are there gays everywhere? #Burn #Die #Makesmesick" At the end of a day that Gray hoped would be remembered for a landmark goal in his career, he was making headlines for distinctly unsavoury reasons. "I want to offer a sincere and unreserved apology to anybody I may have offended in relation to these tweets," he said. "The tweets were posted four years ago when I was a completely different person to the man I am now. " He stressed he was " absolutely not homophobic" and added: " I can only apologise and ask for forgiveness to anyone I offended. "Thankfully I am not the guy I was back then and will continue to work hard both on and off the pitch to become a better person. " Anti-discrimination campaign group Kick It Out responded by saying: "We strongly condemn any discrimination and prejudice such as this has no place in football. "This incident should act as a reminder to all players of their conduct on social media. " On the pitch, Burnley are seeing the best of Gray. He set up Sam Vokes for his strike partner's maiden top-flight goal, followed suit himself before half-time, and was also named man of the match. Gray still has to pinch himself when he realises he is now a Premier League goalscorer, after Burnley's promotion. "I didn't really set myself a day to do it. It's been crazy and something I've dreamed of since I was playing at Luton," he told Clarets Player. "It was a bit surreal even seeing the team sheet but I've got to believe I deserve to be here. "It wasn't the easiest game to win but we got over the line and it was a great team performance. " All the statistics added up for Liverpool except for the only one which matters as the visitors enjoyed 81 per cent of possession and had 26 shots but only five on target. Burnley's 19 per cent possession is the lowest total by a winning side in the Premier League since the statistic was first recorded in the 2003-04 season. Manager Sean Dyche was delighted to see his strike pair boost their confidence by getting off the mark. "The link-up play between the two strikers was great for the first goal and to get both on the scoresheet is marvellous and good for everyone," Dyche said. The last time Burnley were in the top flight in 2014-15 they took 11 matches to register their first win. To do it in their second game will help settle the newcomers' nerves. "It is important so you lot (the media) don't start the stories of 'How many games?'," added Dyche. Record signing Steven Defour made his debut after his £7.5million move from Anderlecht and lasted 56 minutes, setting up Gray's goal with a quick break. "I said to him at half-time, 'Welcome to the Premier League'," Dyche said. "I think it was just a slightly quicker tempo than he is used to but we know he will mature with us and get used to the Premier League. " Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, despite being in the job for 10 months, is still getting to grips with just how difficult the Premier League can be. After the thrilling 4-3 opening win over Arsenal, Liverpool were expected to go to Turf Moor and roll over last season's Championship winners but found a team resilient in defence and ruthless in attack, whereas the Merseysiders were pensive, indecisive and lacklustre. "The word you use in England is 'clinical' - I saw we were clinical but even then we didn't score. We have to accept it," said the German. "We had six or seven times when Phil (Coutinho) was alone to shoot and then we passed and were in the box and lost the ball. "

Turkish journalist fears government bid to link him to coup By Ayla Jean Yackley ISTANBUL, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Leading Turkish journalist Can Dundar, sentenced to six years for publishing state secrets involving Ankara's Syria operations, says he is planning to stay abroad, fearing new charges intended to link him to an abortive military coup. Dundar, who quit as editor-in-chief of the secularist Cumhuriyet daily, said in a telephone interview a case was being readied against him for "aiding and abetting" a religious movement led by a U. S.-based Muslim cleric that Turkey accuses of masterminding the July 15 coup attempt. Some 340 people were killed in the action that collapsed in less than 24 hours. Prosecutors were not immediately available for comment. Dundar, who had left the country before the coup in July on holiday, declined to say where he now is. Dundar and Cumhuriyet bureau chief Erdem Gul spent three months in jail during their trial on spy charges for publishing footage purporting to show the state intelligence agency taking weapons into Syria in 2014. They were found guilty of a lesser crime of revealing secrets in May and are free pending appeal. The convictions sparked censure from rights groups and Western governments worried about worsening human rights in Turkey under President Tayyip Erdogan. "There is a good chance I will be detained and little chance I'll get out because no higher court can protect our rights," said Dundar. "My choice is prison or staying abroad. Under these conditions, I could no longer manage the newspaper. " Under a state of emergency imposed after the coup, Turkey has sacked or suspended some 80,000 people in the army, police, judiciary and civil service for suspected links to the preacher Fethullah Gulen. Gulen, whose followers helped Erdogan in his early years in power by taking up specialist posts in key ministries and security, denies any role in the coup in which rogue troops seized jets and tanks to attack government targets in a spasm of violence that shocked the nation. Following the post-coup shakeup, the government now exerts near-full control over the judiciary, said Dundar, sapping his faith in a fair appeal and trial. Western allies fear the clampdown could stifle dissent and harm stability in the NATO partner that has also been shaken by bomb attacks b Kurdish and Islamic State militants. Over 50 were killed in an apparent suicide bombing in the city of Gaziantep, near the Syrian frontier, on Saturday night. Turkey says the measures are necessary to expose 75-year-old Gulen's followers whom it describes as a "terrorist parallel structure" that spent four decades infiltrating the state. Turkish authorities are pressing the United States to extradite Gulen, who lives in exile in Pennsylvania, presiding over a global network of schools and businesses. 'HEAVY PRICE' Erdogan said the trucks Cumhuriyet reported on in 2015 carried humanitarian aid to forces battling the Syrian regime and were intercepted in an unauthorised operation by Gulen's followers in the gendarmes in an act of treason. Cumhuriyet's story undermined NATO ally Turkey's standing, Erdogan said and vowed Dundar would "pay a heavy price". The Committee to Protect Journalists last month awarded Dundar its International Press Freedom award, citing Cumhuriyet's coverage of the alleged weapons smuggling. Dundar, who is also a well-known filmmaker and author, will continue to pen a column for Cumhuriyet, one of Turkey's oldest newspapers. He stepped down as its editor last week. "I will be prosecuted for helping, with our coverage, the organisation accused of the coup," said Dundar, who denies links with Gulen's network. Dundar sees irony in accusations he has helped a religious organisation, coming as he does from a secularist political culture that has opposed Islamist movements. "I was the editor of a paper that spent years warning against (Gulen's) organisation. "The government was its partner and is solely responsible for the expanse it reached... but there's an attempt to make us culpable for their crimes," he said. Erdogan this month apologised for his previous alliance with Gulen, saying he had failed to see his "true face". The post-coup crackdown has extended to the press, with 70 media workers detained. Turkey is now the world's top jailer of journalists, the European Federation of Journalists says. In total, police have detained 40,000 people since July 15. "This massive detention campaign amounts to a witch hunt... to clean up the opposition," said Dundar. "Publications that refuse to acquiesce to the government are all at risk. " (Editing by Ralph Boulton)

Greater Manchester has more Olympic golds than Japan and France If Greater Manchester was a country, it would currently be sitting in sixth place on the Olympic leaderboard, just behind Germany and Russia and ahead of Japan and France. Residents of the region have now won 14 gold medals, five silvers and one bronze in the Rio Games. An independent Greater Manchester , with a population of 2.8m, would stand just behind Russia, which has a population of 144m and has won 17 gold medals, and Germany, which has a population of 81m and 17 golds. It would come ahead of Japan, which has a population of 127m and has so far won 12 golds, and France, with its population of 66m and nine golds. The figure can largely be explained by the phenomenal success of Team GB’s cycling squad, many of whom live near the Manchester velodrome, which has won 11 medals. If the medals won by Greater Manchester residents were removed from Team GB’s overall haul, the UK would fall from second to seventh place. Theresa May announced on Saturday that Manchester would join London in hosting a parade for the UK’s Olympians in October, following calls for an official celebration to be held outside the capital to reflect the fact that the country’s athletes come from across the UK. The prime minister said it would be “a celebration fit for heroes – and rightly so, because that is exactly what they are.” The deputy leader of Manchester city council, Sue Murphy, said the city had been “a medal factory”, pumping out golds as the home of British cycling and British Taekwondo. “It’s fantastic to see the product of years of hard work and training at the centres of excellence in east Manchester,” she said. Among Greater Manchester’s Olympians are the cyclist couple Laura Trott and Jason Kenny, who won two and three gold medals respectively, and Taekwondo star Jade Jones. The National Cycling Centre’s velodrome was built in 1994 for Manchester’s failed bids to host the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games , and was the UK’s first indoor cycling track. More than 15 track cycling world records have been set on the track, which hosted events in the 2002 Commonwealth Games. The National Taekwondo Centre is also in Manchester.

Court reverses ruling in parenting, kidnapping case CONCORD, N. H. (AP) — The New Hampshire Supreme court says a man convicted of kidnapping his pregnant girlfriend should not have been punished for later seeking to see the child. Christopher Long pleaded guilty in 2013 to six crimes. Three of his prison sentences were suspended, but included the condition that he have no contact with the victim or her family. In 2014, Long requested a parenting plan for the child. The state then imposed part of his suspended sentence saying that Long's request violated the no-contact order. Long appealed, and the state Supreme Court recently sided with him. The justices said Long could not have reasonably understood that the no-contact provision prohibited him from exercising his constitutional right to access the courts.

Liverpool owners consider selling shares to Chinese consortium — RT Sport The Fenway Sports Group (FSG) has been in charge of the Anfield outfit since 2010 but it is believed they have the option of selling a stake in the club to an Asian consortium. The joint approach is believed to have been made by Everbright, who are a state-owned financial conglomerate, and PCP Capital Partners. This has led FSG to employ an investment bank to offer advise on whether accepting the Chinese proposal would make sense financially. Talk that the Reds could be up for sale has been strongly denied by FSG chairman Tom Werner, but offloading a part of the club to wealthy backers could well be an option. Liverpool have high hopes for this season under manager Jurgen Klopp and investment from a new source could provide additional transfer funds for the German. Football is growing exponentially in China, with a host of high-profile players moving to the Far East from Europe to join wealthy clubs. READ MORE: Could the Chinese Super League overtake MLS as the hottest football destination outside Europe? Dr. Tony Xia recently bought English side Aston Villa and has pledged to make the Championship club one of the richest in Europe. That followed the acquisition of 13 percent of Manchester City's parent company, City Football Group, by a Chinese consortium led by media mogul Li Ruigang. Every team that landed in the AP Top 10 has the roster to make a playoff run. But each one of those talented teams also has a problem area that could cost it dearly. The defending national champion Crimson Tide are the No. 1 team in the Associated Press preseason Top 25 for the fifth time overall and third time under coach Nick Saban. The Tide received 33 of 61 first-place votes from the media panel and 1,469 points in the poll released Sunday. Clemson, which lost a thrilling College Football Playoff championship game to Alabama in January, received 16 first-place votes and 1,443 points. This is the first time since 1992 that the teams that ended the previous season at Nos. 1 and 2 in the AP poll began the next season in the same spots. Miami and Washington did it that season. Also receiving top votes were No. 3 Oklahoma (4), No. 4 Florida State (5), No. 5 LSU (1), No. 6 Ohio State (1) and No. 7 Michigan (1). A year after the Buckeyes became the first unanimous preseason No. 1 in the history of the AP poll, seven teams received first-place votes, the most in the preseason since 1998. Stanford , Tennessee and Notre Dame rounded out the top 10. Alabama has won an unprecedented four national championships in the past seven seasons, but none has come when the Tide started No. 1 (2010 and 2013). That's one of a couple of trends the Tide will be trying to buck this season. The last preseason No. 1 to win the national championship was USC in 2004. Alabama is the fourth straight defending champ to start the next season No. 1. Alabama is ranked No. 1 in preseason AP Top 25 for the fifth time since 1950. The Crimson Tide will now try to turn that preseason honor into a national title. Alabama as AP preseason No. 1 since 1950 "It's basically human condition to get satisfied with success," said the 64- year-old Saban, who is 105-18 at Alabama. "There's a lot of books written on how to be successful. There's not a lot of books written on how to stay successful. " The Tide, ranked in the preseason top five for the eighth straight year, need to replace Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry and defensive All- Americans Reggie Ragland and A'Shawn Robinson and will be breaking in a new quarterback, but the next wave of four- and five-star recruits is ready to step up. In Calvin Ridley , Alabama has one of the best receivers in the country, and linebacker Reuben Foster and pass-rusher Tim Williams will anchor another potentially dominant defense. Clemson returns quarterback Deshaun Watson , a Heisman finalist whose 2016 campaign essentially started with a magnificent performance against Alabama in the championship game, and nine other offensive starters. The Tigers face tough opposition in their own division with Florida State. The Tigers and Seminoles give the ACC two top-five teams in the preseason poll for the first time in the history of the conference. Six SEC teams made the first Top 25, the most of any conference. The Pac-12 has five teams, while the Big Ten, ACC and Big 12 each have four. The American has one representative in Houston at No. 15, while independent Notre Dame rounds out the conference representation. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Jeremy Corbyn supporters dismiss Sadiq Khan's criticisms Supporters of Jeremy Corbyn have dismissed criticisms by Sadiq Khan after the London mayor urged Labour party members to ditch their leader and back his rival, Owen Smith, instead. In a stinging attack in , Khan said Corbyn had failed to win the trust of voters and that Labour was extremely unlikely to secure a return to power as long as he remained leader. In response, a spokesman for Corbyn’s campaign implied that Khan won the mayoralty in May because he stood on a Labour platform with the MP for Islington North and as a result won votes from many of Corbyn’s supporters. The party is preparing to send out 500,000 ballot papers on Monday to members who will decide whether Corbyn remains leader or if Smith, the former shadow welfare secretary, will take over. The result will be announced next month. Corbyn remains the favourite, and has overwhelming support among Labour’s members and trade unions. However, he is opposed by a majority of Labour’s MPs, who have focused on his lacklustre EU referendum campaign as proof that he is an electoral liability. “Sadiq Khan is entitled to his opinion. But he won the London mayoralty, as others have pointed out, by standing on a Labour platform under the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn, backed by the huge numbers who have joined our party to support Jeremy and now campaign for Labour,” Corbyn’s campaign spokesman said. The spokesman added that Corbyn had defended Khan during the mayoralty campaign in the Commons at prime minister’s questions when David Cameron accused him of having links with extremists. “Jeremy campaigned alongside Sadiq and defended him from the despatch box in PMQs, and helped deliver the London, Liverpool, Salford and Bristol mayoralties for Labour. “Jeremy Corbyn is the only candidate who offers a genuine break from the approach that led us to two successive election defeats, so that we can rebuild and transform Britain, and so no one and no community is left behind,” the spokesman continued. One trade union ally of the Labour leader described Khan’s intervention as disappointing, and said Labour members in the capital would feel let down by his actions. Matt Wrack, the leftwing general secretary of the Fire Brigades Union and a strong supporter of Corbyn, said Khan’s comments were “a little bit disappointing but possibly no great surprise”. “Sadiq comes from that part of the Labour party that was in government under Blair and Brown,” Wrack told BBC News. “It is disappointing nevertheless. Jeremy Corbyn gave full support for Sadiq in his campaign for mayor, as did a number of unions including my own. Sadiq hasn’t consulted us or Labour party members across London about this latest statement. I think a lot of people will be quite let down by that,” he said. While Corbyn is a “principled Labour man” whose ideas have brought hope to many, Khan said that his year in charge had shown he was not up to the job and would be extremely unlikely to lead the party back to power. The former MP for Tooting focused on Corbyn’s lack of support for a pro- EU message – in effect, laying much of the blame for Brexit at Corbyn’s door and that of his advisers. “Throughout the campaign and aftermath, Jeremy failed to show the leadership we desperately needed. His position on EU membership was never clear – and voters didn’t believe him. A third of Labour voters said they did not know where the party stood on the referendum just a week before polling day,” Khan said. Corbyn will address a rally of supporters in Kilburn, north-west London, on Sunday night.

LA photographer's exhibition features portraits of dying people Four years ago, photographer Andrew George approached the medical director of a Los Angeles hospital with an unusual request: He wanted to meet and take photographs of people about to die. There was nothing macabre about the request, George says. He simply wanted to learn of and reflect the wisdom these people had gained in the hope that others could discover how to lead better, more fulfilling lives. 'I wanted to make a project about the universal challenge that we all have to address, and that is dying,' George said as he sat in a gallery in Los Angeles' Museum of Tolerance, where his photo exhibition, 'Right, Before I Die,' opened this week. 'I thought if I could make a project about exceptional people who had overcome the fears that we all grapple with in life. Then it occurred to me that I could really only get that from dealing with a dying population.' On the exhibition walls around him are 20 framed photos of dying people, each accompanied by some of the words they spoke as they described their hopes, dreams, happy moments and regrets while he photographed them. A commonality he found was that few seemed to fear death any longer. Not that any were in a hurry for it to come either. Many, although appearing frail and noting they were in much pain, still looked forward to just greeting the day. One subject, identified only as Irene, is quoted as saying: 'It's a beautiful day. I'm watching the leaves sway back and forth in the wind, and I'm happy that I get to be alive to watch that.' A few had regrets, although they no longer dwelled on them. 'My wife wasn't the greatest love of my life. A Japanese girl was back in the '40s,' a man named Jack is quoted as saying. The pair were teenagers when she was sent to a relocation camp during World War II. And although they planned to marry, they lost touch. 'Thought about her the other day because I had a Japanese nurse. I hadn't thought about her in years,' said Jack, who is photographed connected to an oxygen tube. Of the people George photographed, only Nelly Gutierrez - who has diabetes, liver failure, heart trouble and other ailments - is still alive. The 63-year-old says she hangs on through pain and grueling treatments because she wants to see her family. That, and she likes to sing karaoke on the days she isn't too exhausted by dialysis. She saw the white light of death once, she recalled, adding she believed it was heaven. But she argued with God that she wasn't ready to go because her kids still needed her. 'And then I woke up,' she says with a smile as she checks out her photo. Coincidentally, the LA exhibition opened just days after a San Diego woman suffering from Lou Gehrig's disease threw a farewell party for friends, then ended her life through assisted suicide. Dr. Ira Byock, founder of the Providence Institute for Human Caring, which is underwriting the exhibition, declines to offer an opinion on assisted suicide other than to say he's happy to see the debate about it over in California, where it is now legal. Now, the author of 'Dying Well' says, medical professionals can concentrate on making a person's final days as fulfilling as possible rather than arguing about how those days should end. When he set out to find people to photograph, George said, he was turned down repeatedly by hospital administrators who told him the same thing: 'This is taboo. We don't talk about death.' He found an exception in Dr. Marwa Kilani, medical director of palliative care at Los Angeles' Providence Holy Cross Hospital. She had heard so many interesting life stories from people during their final days, she told him, that she agreed it was important to share them with others who could learn from them and learn of the dignity people continue to possess even in their dying days. 'Right, Before I Die,' opened last year at Belgium's Musea Brugge, moving on to San Francisco's Grace Cathedral earlier this year. Future venues are being considered after it leaves the Museum of Tolerance at the end of September. 'We're not an art museum, but there was something that resonated with me very much with the subject and the important themes of our museum,' said Liebe Geft, director of the facility dedicated to peace, tolerance and a remembrance of the horrors of the Holocaust. 'It reminds us of the resilience of the human spirit, of the precious gift of life,' she said of the exhibition. 'And it begs all kinds of questions about what it means to be alive, what is the purpose in being here, how can I be the best person that I can be.'

When do the Rio Olympics end and when is the closing ceremony? Everything you need to know about the last day of the games 2016 Brazil's famed carnival will take centre stage at the Rio Games closing ceremony, which will burst into life in front of more than 40,000 fans on Sunday night. Australians looking to tune in for the event, which will take place in the iconic Maracana Stadium, will be able to watch on from 9am on Monday morning (AEST). Australia have so far secured 29 medals, including eight golds, 11 silvers and 10 bronzes, but will be looking to add to the tally in the final day of competition. The Seven Network has three dedicated channels for the final day's action. The Boomers will be desperate for redemption as they take on Spain in the bronze medal match for the men's basketball, which will start at 12.30am Monday (AEST). The final's of the men's handball between Denmark and France will kick off at 3am (AEST), while men's boxing and mountain biking cross country will also play out. But the main event, inspired by Brazil's famous Carnival street party - the Cordão da Bola Preta - will be the Closing Ceremony. International pop sensation Kygo, a 24- year-old musician from Norway, has been announced as one of the main performers for the celebration. The involvement of Rosa Magalhaes as creative director is a clear indication that carnival celebrations will play a key role in the night's festivities. Ms Magalhaes is the the country's most successful carnival designer, winning five championships since 1984. She says the closing ceremony will be a joyous occasion tinged with 'melancholy' when the Olympic flame is extinguished and has also revealed that one element will be 20 metres high. The Maracana has proved problematic for organisers, especially after a planned upgrade fell through. It left the creative directors without a raised stage in the centre of the arena for the opening ceremony and also limited what could be brought through the relatively small entrance. The Olympic opening was ultimately a low-tech event compared to recent Games, relying heavily on music, dance and colour to entrance the audience. More than 3000 volunteers will take part on Sunday along with 200 dancers and creative supervisor Abel Gomes says the ceremony will celebrate 'all what's best in Brazil'. While creative director Leonardo Caetano says it will be 'richer and more Brazilian' than the opening of the Games. 'It is a ceremony to make everybody feel happy, everybody who has worked at the Games, everybody who has taken part,' he said. 'It will be our way of saying, it was worth it.'

" "Because it helped to shine a spotlight on Louisiana and on the dire situation that we have here... it was helpful," Edwards said. Pence, who was sincere and genuine when he called, and we spoke for a long time on Friday morning, about their desire to be helpful," Edwards said. Republicans have questioned why Democratic leaders including President Barack Obama have not been more active in supporting and highlighting Louisiana, but Edwards defended the White House. Edwards said the White House asked about coming to Louisiana, but that his office asked them to wait until the immediate response phase was over. Obama will visit Louisiana next week, after the scheduled end of the vacation he has been taking in Martha's Vineyard.

California wildfire forces Hearst Castle attraction to close A wind-driven wildfire in central California led to more evacuations and the closure of the Hearst Castle on Saturday. Flames from the eight-day- old wildfire in San Luis Obispo County came as close as three miles to the national historic landmark, prompting California State Parks officials to cancel tours and close the grounds to visitors. A wind shift caused the fire to cross a containment line in the afternoon, leading authorities to order evacuations for several communities north and west of Lake Nacimiento, about 180 miles north-west of Los Angeles, said Mike Yuli, a California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman. The fire has burned 31 square miles and destroyed 48 structures since it began on 13 August. It is 35% contained. Hearst Castle closes occasionally due to bad weather, but State Parks supervising ranger Robert Chambers said he couldn’t recall a time when it closed because of a wildfire. “A fire has never come this close before,” he said. Chambers said the closure allowed fire crews to set up firefighting equipment to protect the hilltop estate. The visitor center, which is downhill from the castle, remained open. On Twitter, castle staff said that poor air quality caused by the fire had contributed to their decision to close. Workers at the castle have spent several days cutting brush and putting in fire lines to create a defensible space around the castle, he added, and that a contingency plan is in place to move the large art collection belonging to media magnate William Randolph Hearst. “We’re not at the point where we need to move anything, our plan is to keep the artwork sheltered in place,” Chambers said. A popular tourist attraction along the Central Coast, the estate was conceived by Hearst to display his art collection. In its heyday in the 1920s and 1930s, the castle was a playground for Hollywood stars. Firefighters managed to mostly surround another southern California blaze on Saturday, allowing thousands of evacuated residents to return to their houses. The Blue Cut fire, named after a narrow gorge where it ignited about 75 miles north-east of Los Angeles on Tuesday, in an area called the Cajon Pass, has burned more than 37,000 acres and destroyed 105 homes and 213 outbuildings, said fire information officer Mike Lopez. At its height, the blaze forced authorities to order more than 80,000 residents to evacuate their homes. They also ordered the temporary closure of a segment of Interstate 15, which connects Las Vegas to the Los Angeles area, where it traverses the Cajon Pass. But with the fire 68% contained, many residents were allowed to return home, Lopez said. Residents of 7,000 other homes in the Cajon Pass area were still potentially in the path of the fire, which is burning in heavy brush, and they remained under evacuation orders, Lopez said. Nearly 2,700 firefighters and crew were battling the wildfire Saturday, their efforts amplified by more than two dozen water-dropping airplanes and helicopters, according to tracking website InciWeb.gov.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored on his Manchester United home debut... but will he go the way of Wayne Rooney or Federico Macheda at Old Trafford? Zlatan Ibrahimovic proved that age is just a number on Friday night in Manchester United's win over Southampton. The 34-year- old scored both goals in a 2- 0 victory to cap off a man-of- the-match display at Old Trafford. Ibrahimovic isn't the first Red Devils striker to score on his home debut, though. But how have others fared in the modern era? Sportsmail takes a look at the club's hits and misses. Ruud van Nistelrooy vs Fulham (August 19, 2001) The Dutchman had an Old Trafford debut to remember - scoring twice for Manchester United as they came from 2-1 down to defeat Premier League new boys Fulham 3-2. Verdict: HIT. Van Nistelrooy remains one of United's and the Premier League's deadliest finishers in history. During his five years at United, he scored 150 goals in 219 games at a rate of 0.68 goals per game. In each of his first three seasons at United too, Van Nistelrooy broke the 30-goal barrier in all competitions, scoring 44 in 52 games in 2002-03. Wayne Rooney vs Fenerbahce (September 28, 2004) The greatest debut among the names on the list. After a stunning Euro 2004 campaign Rooney confirmed his status as precocious talent with a hat-trick against Fenerbahce in the Champions League. This treble made Rooney the youngest player to score a hat-trick in Champions League history aged 18 years 335 days as United romped to a 6-2 win. Verdict: HIT. Twelve years on and Rooney is still ruling the roost. He's won everything at Old Trafford and is just four goals shy from becoming the club's all-time record goalscorer. Louis Saha vs Southampton (January 31, 2004) Having joined in a £12.4m deal from Fulham on January 23, 2004 - Saha endeared himself to the United supporters just eight days later against Southampton. The Frenchman opened his account on debut with a deflected free-kick on 17 minutes as Sir Alex Ferguson's side won 3-2. Verdict: HIT. Saha's four- and-a-half year career at United was blighted by injuries but when fit he was blessed with pace and two great feet that saw him score 42 goals in 120 appearances for the club. Federico Macheda vs Aston Villa (April 5, 2009) This was a debut that any boyhood Manchester United fan would dream of. After a prolific goalscoring season in the Under 18 and reserves, the Italian was promoted to the first-team for their clash against Aston Villa. With the Red Devils 2-1 down against Villa, Ferguson introduced Macheda to the game with just under half an hour to play. After Cristiano Ronaldo equalised, the 17-year-old completed the comeback in injury time with a glorious curling effort on the swivel. A pivotal match as United went on to win the title. Verdict: MISS. That was as about as good as it got for Macheda as he failed to make the grade at United. After loan spells at Sampdoria, QPR, Stuttgart, Doncaster and Birmingham he joined Cardiff City in a permanent deal in 2014. Currently on loan at Nottingham Forest. Mame Biram Diouf vs Burnley (January 16, 2010) Signed from Molde in May 2009 Diouf had to wait until the turn of the year to make his United home debut, after returning to the Norwegian outfit on loan until their season ended. In January 2010, he was finally given the chance to show The Theatre of Dreams what he was capable of. Coming on as a late substitute he added a third for the Red Devils with a looping header over Bunrley goalkeeper Brian Jensen to complete a 3-0 win. He duly celebrated with an acrobatic flip before pointing to the name of his shirt. Verdict: MISS. That appearance was only one of nine over three years at United and his only goal. Diouf's spell there saw a season-long loan at Blackburn before he joined Hannover in 2012. Now at Stoke City. Robin van Persie vs Fulham (August 25, 2012) The Dutchman's arrival to Old Trafford was an acrimonious one as he left title rivals Arsenal with the aim to win silverware up north. Van Persie's home debut came against Fulham and was marked with a sensational goal to level the scoreline at 1-1. The Dutchman's goal came from the left when Patrice Evra crossed and he met it after one bounce with a superb strike into the opposite corner. Verdict: HIT. Van Persie's goal to win silverware at United was met in his first season as he inspired United to their 20th league title - his hat-trick in a 3-0 over Aston Villa on April 22, 2013 confirming that. Now in his second season at Fenerbahce after three years in Manchester. James Wilson vs Hull (May 6, 2014) After a disastrous season under David Moyes, Ryan Giggs had taken the reins at United until the end of that term as player-manager. The Welsh wizard gave youth a chance in their final home game of the season against Hull. James Wilson was given a chance up front and repaid the faith shown in him with two goals in a 3-1 win. Verdict: MISS - at the moment. The England Under 21 has scored twice more for United since his debut brace but has failed to perform as a starter. Now behind Ibrahimovic, Rooney, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford in the pecking order he has joined Derby on a season-long loan. Anthony Martial vs Liverpool (September 12, 2015) 'What a waste of money,' read the back page of one newspaper publication after Manchester United signed unknown teenager Anthony Martial from Monaco in a £36million deal that could rise to £58m on transfer deadline day in the last summer. Coming off the bench against bitter rivals Liverpool, he bamboozled Martin Skrtel with his footwork and simply shrugged off the challenge of Nathaniel Clyne before firing past Simon Mignolet in a 3-1 win. Verdict: HIT. Martial was undoubtedly one of United's brightest sparks last season. The France international scored 17 goals in all competitions for the Red Devils. This included an injury-time winner against Everton in the semi-finals of their successful FA Cup campaign. Marcus Rashford vs Midtjylland (February 25, 2016) Injury to Martial in the warm-up, led to a young Rashford being given his opportunity at Old Trafford. The teenager scored in a 5-1 win as Louis van Gaal's side came from behind to thrash Danish minnows Midtjylland in the second leg of their Europa League round of 32 tie. The 18- year-old put United 2-1 ahead when he tucked home from seven yards before repeating the trick with a half-volley to make it 3-1. Verdict: HIT. Rashford has risen from U18 United star to a fully-fledged England international since making his first-team debut six months ago. Now learning from Zlatan Ibrahimovic - his future looks even brighter.

More explosive devices found in Kentucky woods after suspect's death A federal grand jury indicted Sawaf July 14 on eight charges of making or possessing unregistered destructive devices, a crime punishable by up to 10 years in prison, Lex 18 reports. Police later found child porn on his computer while searching for further evidence of bomb making. A Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agent discovered a naked girl, aged between sic and eight, with her legs spread, the court heard. scattered over an approximately 5-mile radius in the eastern Kentucky woods. Jacobs said the group had found several cameras — which are usually attached to trees — rigged with explosives and was still searching near a subdivision in the Woodland Hills community. 'We know that there are more explosives there,' he said. The 39-year-old, who ran Harlan Counseling Inc., agreed to help but had then attempted to flee on August 11. Sawaf, who was shackled, helped officers find seven explosive devices in the woods near Harlan but told officers there were several more to find. He did not say why he had set the booby traps along the trail. Officers had caught up with him but there was a struggle and when he reached for an officer's gun, he was shot by Capt. Brad Dobrzynski, a Lexington Fire Department investigator - according to State police Trooper Shane Jacobs. 'He tried to flee, and once they caught back up to him, an altercation took place and that's when deadly force was utilized,' the trooper said. Sawaf died at the scene. His body was taken to the state medical examiner's office in Frankfort for an autopsy. Sawaf, originally from Michigan, had owned and operated Harlan Counseling Inc. since 2014 and had a master's degree in mental health counseling. Neighbor Tracy Medford told the Herald that Sawaf was a quiet man who 'kept to himself.' 'He acted like he didn't want to talk to nobody,' she said, adding that he made her nervous. 'I was worried that he might go crazy and shoot somebody,' Medford said. Sawaf often went out to shot guns at explosive targets in the hills behind teh community late at night, neighbors say.

Adam Whittington performs mission weeks after being freed from Lebanon prison A former Australian soldier at the centre of 60 Minutes' abduction scandal in Beirut has claimed to have performed another child recovery, only weeks after being released from prison. Adam Whittington, an ex- SAS soldier and the current chief executive of Child Abduction Recovery International (CARI), was detained alongside journalist Tara Brown during the botched recovery attempt of Sally Faulkner's children in April. But despite having been granted bail from a Beirut prison less than one month ago, Mr Whittington was back at work on Friday rescuing a six-week-old baby. Pictures posted to CARI's Facebook page show him holding the young girl after the successful recovery, believed to have happened in the West of Europe. According to the post, Mr Whittington was called into action after the girl's family contacted CARI when she was illegally abducted by her dad just one week after birth. 'Due to Anastasia's (not her real name) age, CARI acted urgently without hesitation and within days of being contacted for help by her very concerned family,' the post said. 'Up until four days ago Anastasia was missing without a trace as the abductor like many others went on the run.' Mr Whittington reportedly negotiated the final stage of the child's release. In April, Mr Whittington was in charge of orchestrating the recovery of Brisbane mother Sally Faulkner's two children from her ex- husband Ali Elamine in Lebanon. A 60 Minutes crew, led by experienced journalist Tara Brown, journeyed to Beirut alongside Mr Whittington to capture the moment the children were recovered. However the operation went pear-shaped when police intercepted the group and charged them with attempted kidnapping before they could recover the children. The 60 Minutes crew was released when Channel Nine paid Mr Elamine a reported US$500,000 to drop the charges. But while the 60 Minutes team returned free to Australia after two weeks in jail, Mr Whittington, associate Craig Michael and two Lebanese men hired to help were detained for a further three months.

Danny Dyer 'emerges with black eye' after 'backstage row' with Mark Wright He was said to be embroiled in a furious row with Mark Wright following a lukewarm Justin Bieber performance at the V Festival on Saturday afternoon. And sources claim EastEnders star Danny Dyer has been seen with a black eye following the altercation, during which the pair reportedly clashed with security guards after their friends were refused entry to the Chelmsford event’s Mahiki VIP area. ‘Everyone is shocked today. It was TOWIE vs EastEnders. It all kicked off. Security said it was like the Wild West,’ a source told the Mirror. Scroll down for video ‘Danny emerged this morning from his tent and appeared to have a black eye. But he still seemed to be in an upbeat mood.’ Sources claim security put an end to a row between the pair, after which Mark joking that Danny 'couldn't hit someone if he tried.' 'Mark did seem put out though and spent a lot of time on the phone. In his first conversation he was angry and shouting a lot but when he was on the phone for the third time he had calmed down.' MailOnline have contacted Danny and Mark's representatives for further comment. The reported incident comes after Danny, 39, became embroiled in a war of words with Mark's brother Joshua. The EastEnders star took aim at Mark when he tweeted: 'My worst nightmare would be listening to Heart FM while eating an Oykos yoghurt. It would be like p***ing razor blades.' Mark is a DJ on the radio station and stars in adverts for the yoghurt brand and the attack certainly piqued the interest of Gillingham FC star Joshua. The midfielder hit back: 'Malcolm you must still be hurting from when Mark gave you a slap in the changing room that day.get over it you melt @MrDDyer' However, Danny shed further light on the situation, writing: 'At a charity football match 4 Terminally ill children then run behind his dad. What a geezer. My bird hits harder.' Disputing the actor's version of events, Joshua said: '@MrDDyer Not sure it happened like that mate you ran your mouth as always and pushed him into corner so he protected himself by slapping you' He added that his dad wasn't in the room at the time. Replying to criticism from one Twitter user, Danny explained to his 1.21 million followers, 'Hardly a dig. The fact I suffered it was there was kids waiting outside with months to live. He's a disgrace.' Meanwhile, Mark has kept out of the spat, instead tweeting his support for his brother as he took on Swindon Town on Tuesday night. He wrote: 'Love a midweek sunny night game!! Come on @joshwright4 and @thegillsfc #COYG https://www.instagram.com/p/BJLizmqhfZV/' A representative for Mark declined to comment. A keen footballer himself, Mark scooped Man of the Match at Soccer Aid in June. Mark, who used to play semi-professional football when he was younger, scored on his way to helping a star-studded England XI defeat a Rest of the World XI 3-2. He played alongside fellow celebrities Louis Tomlinson, Damian Lewis, Ben Shephard, Danny Jones, Jack Whitehall, Jamie Theakston, John Bishop, Jonathan Wilkes, Marvin Humes, Olly Murs and Paddy McGuinness. Also in his team - which was managed by Sam Allardyce, Robbie Williams and Bradley Walsh - were footballers past and present Jermain Defoe, David Seaman, Jamie Carragher, Phil Neville, Sol Campbell, Robbie Fowler, Danny Murphy and Kieron Dyer.

Fed close to hitting job and inflation targets - Fischer Aug 21 (Reuters) - The Federal Reserve is close to hitting its targets for full employment and 2 percent inflation, the Fed's No. 2 policymaker said on Sunday in comments that did not address when the U. S. central bank should next raise interest rates. The Fed has been suggesting it could raise rates in 2016 since it tightened policy in December for the first time in nearly a decade, but investors have doubts the central bank will follow through on that guidance. Fed Vice Chairman Stanley Fischer gave a generally upbeat assessment of the economy's current strength, saying the job market was close to full strength and still improving. "We are close to our targets," Fischer said in prepared remarks for a conference in Aspen, Colorado. Fischer's comments come ahead of a speech scheduled on Friday by Fed Chair Janet Yellen who is expected to give guidance on interest rate policy. Fischer, who has argued in the past that the Fed needed to be wary of being too slow in raising interest rates, made no such argument on Sunday. At the same time, Fischer's comments were not inconsistent with that sort of view. He said this year's pace of job growth, while slower than that seen last year, was "more than enough" for the labor market to continue to improve. "The behavior of employment has been remarkably resilient," he said, adding that inflation outside of food and energy prices was "within hailing distance" of 2 percent, the Fed's target rate. 95 Roxy Jacenko reveals she never asked her husband Oliver Curtis if he was guilty of stealing people’s money PR queen Roxy Jacenko has said she never questioned husband Oliver Curtis about the insider trading charges which saw him jailed for up to two years. In an interview with 60 Minutes on Sunday night, Jacenko said she had never asked her husband about his role in the scandal which happened years before the pair met. Jacenko has maintained her husband's innocence throughout, despite admitting they haven't discussed his role in the scandal which occurred in 2007 and 2008. 'We don't discuss it. At all,' Jacenko told interviewer Allison Langdon. Scroll down for video 'You also have to remember (it occurred) I think years and years and years ago - it happened well before my time.' Curtis, 30, was sentenced to two years jail in June after a jury found him guilty of conspiracy to commit insider trading. He has since appealed the length of his sentence, but not the conviction. But Jacenko, wasn't backing down during the occasionally fiery interview, even when questioned about how she could be sure he wasn't guilty. 'Look, call me crazy, some people would want to know, the ins and outs of everything, but I haven't asked,' Jacenko said. 'A lot of people find it strange that of all the questions that's the one I haven't asked.' The NSW Supreme Court heard the investment banker and his private school friend John Hartman made $1.43 million off a scheme from 2007 and 2008. NSW Supreme Court Justice Lucy McCallum said Curtis, 30, knew what he was doing was 'very wrong'. But, she said, he had used his insider trading with his former best friend to fund a 'lifestyle of conspicuous extravagance'. Her wide range of outfits quickly caught the attention of the paparazzi. And throughout the trial, she would post elevator selfies of the day's outfit to her 96,000 Instagram followers. The dresses - which often cost thousands of dollars - were captioned with the name of the elite designer brand she wore, including Gucci and Dior. Throughout the trial, Ms Jacenko kept up her high profile personal and business schedule.

Strictly judge Bruno Tonioli enjoys a fish lunch with friend Kelly Hoppen He's gearing up to judge this year's Strictly Come Dancing hopefuls alongside Craig Revel Horwood who's tipped to be the new lead adjudicator. But it appears Bruno Tonioli needs to work on his own finger placement as he was seen scoffing a batted cod with his hands during a boozy lunch on Sunday. The Italian critic, 60, joined interior designer Kelly Hoppen for fish and chips in west London where he unbuttoned his blue shirt to bask in the summer sun. Bruno showed off his phenomenal frame and completed the relaxed look with some funky blue shades. The hunk noshed a traditional cod a chips, washed down with a carafe of rose wine. Former Dragons' Den investor Kelly, who is Sienna Miller's stepmother, was looking radiant in a black dress and circular shades and stuck to bottled water. After their very animated lunch, Bruno tried to pop inside and pay without Kelly seeing him, but the waiter said he would have to pay outside. As the waiter came over with the machine, Kelly, 57, protested and Bruno jokingly made a fist at her and blew her a kiss. After leaving the restaurant, they popped into designer clothes shop American Vintage before driving off in Bruno's personalised- plated blue Mercedes sports car. The images emerge alongside reports that Craig Revel-Horwood may sashay his way to the top of the Strictly Come Dancing hierarchy. According to The Mirror , the 51 year-old is being lined-up by TV bosses to replace out-going judge, Len Goodman. A TV insider told the publication: 'Craig is the obvious choice for the head judge job in many respects. He’s been there from the beginning and is part of the fabric of the show. 'But there is a sticking point. They are wary of how the public would view Craig, because he is so different to Len, so they’re keen for Anton to be on the panel too. 'Anton is very much the ‘grannies’ favourite’. His personality is more in line with Len’s. But they feel it is quite a leap to make from pro dancer to head judge, so it’s unlikely he’d get the head judge title.' MailOnline have contacted representatives for both Mr Revel-Horwood and Strictly Come Dancing, but are yet to receive a response. The news comes just hours after it was revealed olympic gymnast Claudia Fragapane has been confirmed for the new series. The 18-year-old athlete - who has just taken part in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro - is the latest star to join the upcoming series of the BBC One show. Although she is 'obviously competitive', Claudia isn't expecting to make the final and said: 'I just want to go there, enjoy it and challenge myself. 'And she isn't worried about the tough Strictly judges, explaining: 'Some are harsher critics than others but I take criticism well. She also revealed she was inspired to take part by fellow gymnast Louis Smith, who scooped the Glitterball trophy in 2012. Claudia said: 'I always watched it when Louis Smith was on. I love the different styles of dancing and the costumes. I love costumes that stand out. Lots of sparkles!' Claudia made history by winning four gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. She also won three successive silvers at the European Championships and was named Young Sports Personality of the Year. This comes after Anastacia was the tenth celebrity contestant to be confirmed for the Saturday night show on Friday. The announcement was made live on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2 where Anastacia, 47, joined Dominic Cooper and former Strictly contestant Sophie Ellis-Bextor as a guest live in the studio. But Chris slipped up on air when he accidentally said two-thirds of Anastacia's full name before the official reveal. The star told Chris: 'I'm a total '10' on the level of excitement and definitely a '10' scared! Seriously though, I can't wait to get started. Taking part in Strictly is a dream, it's such a new challenge for me I've never done anything like this before so I hope I pull it off!!!' she gushed. 'I've got a lot of training to do before I'm twinkle toes so I'm eager to get my partner and get going! I'm ready!' she added. Chicago born Anastacia has loved music from a young age, appearing in music videos and singing backing vocals until she finally secured a record deal with her debut album Not That Kind being released in 2000. Songs such as Sick and Tired, One Day In Your Life and Left Outside Alone helped her clock up over 30 million sales, four headline tours and an MTV Europe Music Award. Last year, Anastacia appeared on Strictly Come Dancing's Blackpool special singing her hit single I'm Outta Love in the world famous Tower Ballroom, where she is thought to have caught the eye of the show's producers. The singer has been open about her battle with cancer, making the decision to have a double mastectomy after two battles with breast cancer in 2003 and then ten years later in 2013. In her statement about Strictly, the star explained: 'After my double mastectomy, it stripped away a part of me that I feel I would like to find again.' 'This opportunity has come at a perfect time to help me use and get to know my upper body again.' She joins Ed Balls, Will Young, Laura Whitmore, Ore Oduba, Melvin Odoom, Louise Redknapp, Danny Mac and Daisy Lowe who have already been announced as contestants for the new series of Strictly. On Thursday BBC Breakfast's Naga Munchetty was confirmed, with the journalist admitting: 'I was so surprised to be asked to take part - I never thought I'd have the courage to say yes, but it would be simply silly to turn down the chance to learn to dance with a professional.'

David Willey out of entire Pakistan one-day series but Mark Wood ready to resume his England career England suffered a setback ahead of their one-day series against Pakistan after David Willey was ruled out with a hand injury. Willey, 26, damaged his left wrist during Yorkshire’s Twenty20 semi- final defeat against Durham at Edgbaston on Saturday and will miss the whole five- match series amid fears that the injury could be serious. A fierce drive from Durham’s Mark Stoneman struck Willey on the left wrist during his second over of Saturday’s game and, after initial x-rays failed to rule out a break, he will see a consultant to decide whether his season is over Jake Ball, who made his Test debut against Pakistan at Lord’s earlier this summer, will replace Willey in England’s squad for a Royal London series that begins at the Ageas Bowl on Wednesday. It is a huge blow for one of England’s leading white-ball bowlers but as one door closes another opens and Mark Wood looks sure to make his international return on Wednesday after an outstanding Twenty20 finals day of his own. Wood was the stand-out performer for Durham in their semi-final win over Yorkshire, regularly exceeding 90 miles per hour and even making Joe Root hop around before taking the wickets of four England players in Jonny Bairstow, Gary Ballance, Liam Plunkett and Tim Bresnan. ‘He made me look as if I had my hands and feet on backwards,’ said Root afterwards. Now he will bring that pace back to the international scene after undergoing two operations on the chronic left ankle condition that threatened to curtail his hugely promising England career. ‘There were times when I was having trouble and wondered if I would ever get back to full pace,’ said Wood afterwards. ‘It’s been tough mentally more than anything but I’ve worked hard and I’m delighted to be back.’ Yet NatWest Blast finals day belonged to financially stricken underdogs Northants who upset the odds to defeat star-studded Notts in their semi-final and then Durham, with Josh Cobb scoring 80 in their four-wicket final win. Earlier Ben Duckett had confirmed himself as one of the most promising young batsmen in the domestic game with 84 in the semi-final against Notts and the 21-year-old looks sure to be included in England’s squad for their Twenty20 international against Pakistan at Old Trafford that ends the international season next month.

Simon Danczuk insists 'private life is no more colourful than Boris Johnson's' Embattled MP Simon Danczuk has criticised the public interest in his private life, claiming 'minor issues' been 'blown out of proportion'. Mr Danczuk, 49, who was suspended from the Labour Party after being caught sending lewd text messages to a 17-year-old girl, said his life is no more 'colourful' than Boris Johnson's, but that only he is lambasted by the Press. The MP has faced fresh media interest this week after he was arrested following an explosive row with his estranged wife Karen at their Spanish holiday home. He reportedly smashed a glass door in a jealous rage after he discovered she had been on the phone to another man. Karen, 33, needed hospital treatment for her injuries while Mr Danczuk appeared in court on suspicion of domestic violence. He was later released after Karen declined to press charges for the sake of their children. The father-of-two denies any suggestion that he was physically violent. Speaking to Rosie Kinchen at the Sunday Times , Mr Danczuk said that the string of scandals that have plagued him are simply 'minor issues' that had been 'blown out of proportion'. He argued that while married Foreign Secretary Mr Johnson is allowed to conduct his private life behind closed doors, his dirty laundry is aired in public for all to see. Mr Danczuk, who became MP for Rochdale in 2010, has rarely been out of the headlines over the last year. He has been accused by his first wife, Sonia Rossington, of ‘bullying’ her into having sex and was suspended from the Labour Party after being caught sending lewd messages to a teenager, asking if she wanted to be 'spanked'. The MP is also alleged to have exchanged more than 6,000 explicit messages with a 22-year-old blonde woman he met on Twitter. The pair reportedly had sex in his taxpayer-funded constituency office. Mr Danczuk is also embroiled in an expenses row after he was ordered to pay back £11,500 he claimed for extra accommodation costs for two children who did not ‘routinely’ live with him. He insisted he had made an honest mistake. Meanwhile his estranged wife Karen has become known for posting racy selfies on social media sites.

Hillary Clinton campaign manager: Foundation step 'unprecedented' Robby Mook repeatedly called the foundation's decisions on separating its work from the political careers of the Clintons "unprecedented. " He sought to explain why the organization believes this move is necessary if Clinton were elected president -- but not before then, or during her time as secretary of state. "The foundation is doing an enormous amount of work, and it takes time when you're in a number of countries around the world to retool, refocus the mission, and adapt," Mook said, emphasizing the work the foundation does to combat AIDS and malaria around the world. "It will take some time to adjust," Mook added, saying that Clinton has been "transparent. " In an attempt to turn the conversation Mook contrasted that to Republican nominee Donald Trump, who has refused to release his tax returns. Clinton Foundation will not accept foreign donations if Hillary wins Mook also questioned why the Clinton Foundation has been singled out compared with other past presidents' work. "There's all this scrutiny because Hillary Clinton has been transparent," Mook said. "I don't think you heard these questions when members of the Bush family continued to serve on boards for President Bush's foundation. " The foundation said Thursday it would not accept corporate or foreign donations were Hillary Clinton elected, and former President Bill Clinton will also stop giving paid speeches. But the move hasn't alleviated intense scrutiny and criticism of the foundation and perceived overlap between the foreign and corporate donors to the firm and the work the State Department did under Hillary Clinton. Recently released emails from Clinton's top aides at the State Department have fueled the criticism, including one from Clinton aide Doug Band to her top aides at the State Department, Huma Abedin and Cheryl Mills, asking for a "favor" to "take care" of someone at State. Mook defended that exchange, saying there was "no quid pro quo. " "The email in question from Doug Band was coming from his private email account, or his Clinton.com email account, it was not related to the foundation, and the State Department at every step was following every appropriate protocol," Mook said. 100 , golf eye Olympic halo effect but face Tokyo challengers Rugby and golf thrived on their return to the Olympics after a century away, but will face new challengers in the battle to retain a place beyond the Toyko 2020 Games. Baseball/softball, karate, sport climbing, surfing and skateboarding will all be included in Japan and will be anxious to make a good impression to get a possible place among the so-called "core sports" with access to Olympic riches. There is no doubt that rugby and golf raised the bar, despite a host of male golf stars staying away. Both have places assured for 2020 but the beauty contest starts to keep that place and Olympic leaders will be looking closely at the new sports that bring in the young crowd. Rugby's last Olympic incarnation was as a men's 15-a-side tournament in 1924 won by the United States. The high-octane abbreviated rugby sevens on offer this time did not disappoint. The 10-leg Sevens World Series is pulling in increasing crowds. Australia won the women's contest at the 15,000-capacity Deodoro Stadium and home interest was captured as the Brazilian women battled to finish ninth of the 12 teams, to guarantee a spot on next season's world series. Fiji won their first medal of any colour when they smashed Britain in the men's final, delivering one of the most complete displays of sevens rugby ever seen in front of a raucous, sell-out crowd. The tournament also featured the biggest upset in sevens history as Japan defeated world champions New Zealand. The teams "showcased the very best of our sport and its character-building values, demonstrating why we believe it is a perfect fit for the Olympic Games," said World Rugby chairman Bill Beaumont. - Olympic 'game-changer' - Beaumont said rugby's inclusion in the Olympics had been a "game-changer". "Since being voted back on to the programme in 2009, we have seen participation double to 7.73 million and we are determined to maximise the Rio 2016 halo effect," the former England skipper said. Golf, making its Olympic return after a 112-year absence, was hit by the withdrawals of more than 20 top players including Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy and top-ranked Jason Day. While the top four might have been absent, world number five Henrik Stenson took silver, with world number 12 Justin Rose crowned Olympic champion. McIlroy said last month that he didn't rank golf as a "real" Olympic sport. But Rose, the 2013 US Open champion, said the Olympics had "resonated with a wider audience, far wider than the US Open victory did. It is not just golf fans. It's sports fans as a whole. " Rose said the missing golfers would have to take note. "It's not going to sit well with them. It's an opportunity that comes around so rarely. Hopefully they are going to take the opportunity in 2020. " International Golf Federation president Peter Dawson said an estimated 10,000 people watched the men's final round and predicted more would come out in Brazil. "What they have witnessed on television will make them realise they have missed out on a great event. " The women's competition featured all the top players. South Korea's Park In-Bee, a seven-time major winner, beat world number one Lydia Ko of New Zealand for gold. "I have won majors but I haven't won a gold medal so this feels very, very special. To hear our national anthem being played over the golf course was just amazing," she said of the Olympic experience. Surfing, skateboarding and karate enter the fray promising a young following against rugby and golf's richer and mainly middle-aged followers. International Surfing Association president Fernando Aguerre said it had taken "decades of hard work" to persuade the International Olympic Committee grandees. "We are already seeing increased popularity of the sport across the world and the Olympic Games will provide an incredible platform," he said. "With its unique and modern blend of sport performance, style and youth culture, surfing will help deliver something special to the Games," he said. Skateboarding is promising the same edgy appeal that tempts the IOC. Some young skateboarders have expressed fears that being in the mainstream Olympics will take away the sport's cool cache. But Sochi Winter Olympics snowboarding champion Yuri Podladtchikov is among those tempted to try the new sport in Tokyo. None of the sports can afford to be off-balance. The IOC has warned that it will consider whether top stars take part in assessing who gets a place after 2020. That was a message to golf. It should also be noted by baseball whose major league stars in the United States have not committed to appearing in Tokyo.
