1 Saint Joan Script Glossary Compiled by Richard Rossi Italicized definitions have an accompanying picture Scene I Meuse River: During the time of the play, this roughly North/South river indicated the border between the Holy Roman Empire and the Kingdom of France. Approximately the red line, with Lorraine as the tan county at the bottom right, and Champagne on the left. Lorraine: The Duchy of Upper Lorraine, ruled by the dynasty of Gérard de Châtenois, was de facto independent from the 10th to 15th centuries. Intersected by the Meuse and Moselle rivers, it had a great deal of trade and information passing through, which made it an enticing target. In 1431, a mere two years after the start of Saint Joan, the Duchy was ceded to the House of Anjou, specifically René I, from whom it was incorporated into France in 1480. Champagne: Under the rule of the Counts of Champagne until 1284, the marriage of Philip the Fair and Joan I of Navarre brought it under the royal domain. During the High Middle Ages (1000-1300), the County of Champagne was one of the most powerful fiefs in France, home to the largest financial and commercial markets in Western Europe. 2 Vaucouleurs Castle: The main defense of “the town that armed Joan of Arc” and the residence of Robert de Baudricourt. The unruined structures, including the gothic chapel on the right, were rebuilt during the 18th century. Robert de Baudricourt: (1400-1454) minor French nobility, the son of the chamberlain of the Duke of Bar (Liebald de Baudricourt).

  • Becoming Saints: Coptic Orthodox Monasticism, Exemplarity, & Negotiating Christian Virtue
Becoming Saints: Coptic Orthodox Monasticism, Exemplarity, & Negotiating Christian Virtue by Joseph Youssef A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Anthropology University of Toronto © Copyright by Joseph Youssef (2019) Becoming Saints: Coptic Orthodox Monasticism, Exemplarity, & Negotiating Christian Virtue Joseph Youssef Doctor of Philosophy Department of Anthropology University of Toronto 2019 Abstract Based on 13 months of transnational ethnographic fieldwork between Egypt, Southern California, and Toronto, this dissertation examines questions around exemplarity, morality, and the cultivation of virtue among Coptic Orthodox Christians. Specifically, this thesis investigates the relationship between Coptic monks and the wider Coptic community. Many Copts view monasticism as a morally exemplary way of life. The monk as one who has forsaken all social ties and lives in the desert is regarded as one who has attained the highest form of virtue. This view results in different levels of engagement with monastic practice and competing voices for what it means to be a Coptic Christian. As will be demonstrated through ethnographic details, there is a gap between the ideals of the Coptic monastic imaginary and the lived reality of negotiating Christian virtue for monks and laity alike. Furthermore, this dissertation unpacks the ways in which Coptic monasticism is (re-)imagined and (re-)produced in North America and how Coptic subjectivity is (re-)negotiated in relation to Egypt and the Mother Church. ii Acknowledgments Becoming exemplary is a process as this dissertation will soon show. Whether one strives to be the best monk, Christian, or anthropologist, there are many along the path who are a part of this process, who challenge, encourage, and patiently watch for the individual to grow and formulate their vocation.

  • Seduced by Secrets: Inside the Stasi's Spy-Tech World
P1: SBT 9780521188742pre CUNY1276/Macrakis 978 0 521 88747 2 January 17, 2008 14:21 This page intentionally left blank ii P1: SBT 9780521188742pre CUNY1276/Macrakis 978 0 521 88747 2 January 17, 2008 14:21 SEDUCED BY SECRETS More fascinating than fiction, Seduced by Secrets takes the reader inside the real world of one of the most effective and feared spy agencies in history. The book reveals, for the first time, the secret technical methods and sources of the Stasi (East German Ministry for State Security) as it stole secrets from abroad and developed gadgets at home, employing universal, highly guarded techniques often used by other spy and security agencies. Seduced by Secrets draws on secret files from the Stasi archives, includ- ing CIA-acquired material, interviews and friendships, court documents, and unusual visits to spy sites, including “breaking into” a prison, to demonstrate that the Stasi overestimated the power of secrets to solve problems and cre- ated an insular spy culture more intent on securing its power than protecting national security. It re-creates the Stasi’s secret world of technology through biographies of agents, defectors, and officers and by visualizing James Bond– like techniques and gadgets. In this highly original book, Kristie Macrakis adds a new dimension to our understanding of the East German Ministry for State Security by bringing the topic into the realm of espionage history and exiting politically charged commentary. Kristie Macrakis is a professor of the history of science at Michigan State University. She received her Ph.D. in the history of science from Harvard University in 1989 and then spent a postdoctoral year in Berlin, Germany.
