Burke An annotated list of the Curculionoidea (Coleoptem) (excluding Anthribidae, Platypodinae, and Scolytinae) is presented for the Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) of Texas. The list includes species that occur in Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr, and Wigacy counties. Each of the 23S species in 97 genera is tteated according to its geographical range. Lower Rio Grande distribution, seasonal activity, plant associations, and biology. The taxonomic atTangement follows O' Brien &, Wibmer (I og2). A table of the species occuning in patxicular areas of the Lower Rio Grande Valley, such as the Boca Chica Beach area, the Sabal Palm Grove Sanctuary, Bentsen-Rio Grande State Park, and the Falcon Dam area is included. -

Twenty-seven species are found in the Paleocene, 442 in the Eocene and 94 in the Oligocene. The greatest diversity of Curculionoidea is described from the Eocene of Europe and North America. The richest faunas are known from Eocene localities, Florissant (177 species), Baltic amber (124 species) and Green River formation (75 species). The family Curculionidae dominates in all Paleogene localities. Weevil species associated with herbaceous vegetation are present in most localities since the middle Paleocene. V prostoru primárního bezlesí arkto- alpinní tundry byl studován vliv sjezdových tratí a invazivní d eviny borovice kle e ( Pinus mugo ) na spole enstva brouk . Na území sekundárních bezlesí podhorských luk a pastvin byl hodnocen vliv zem dlského hospoda ení na brouky a další bezobratlé. Twenty-three species documented from the parkway are first records for the state. Of the nine capture methods used during the survey, Malaise traps were the most successful. Periods of adult activity, based on dates of capture, are given for each species. Relative abundance is noted for each species based on the number of captures. Sixteen species adventive to North America are documented from the parkway, including three species documented for the first time in the state. Range extensions are documented for two species. The first apparent nectarivorous weevil, Smicronyx squalidus , is documented on Desmanthus illinoensis . Although found feeding from extra-floral nectaries (EFN’s) located be- tween the petioles of D. illinoensis , it is believed that S. squalidus merely supplements its diet with nectar, due to an apparent lack of mouthpart modifications for a more efficient uptake of fluids. Photographs of the adult S. squalidus , as well as the EFN’s on D. illinoensis , are provided. KEY WORDS: extra-floral nectaries, glands, host-plant associations, herbivory. INTRODUCTION Smicronyx squalidus Casey (Curculioninae: Smicronychini), formerly placed within Er- irhininae, is a small weevil, approximately 2.1-2.5 mm in length (excluding the rostrum). In the Nearctic region, recorded hosts of Smicronyx include Ambrosia (ANDERSON et al. 2006), Helianthus , Haplopappus , Dracopis (SALSBURY 2000), Iva (Asteraceae), and Cus- cuta (Convolvulaceae). To this list, Desmanthus illinoensis (Fabaceae) can now be added as an additional host of S. squalidus . Before this documentation, the only described beetle pests of D. illinoensis were in Bruchidae ( Acanthoscelides ) and Chrysomelidae ( Anomoea ) (LATTING 1996). Herbivory was not observed in this host-herbivore interaction, however, but rather it was nectarivory that took place at the button-shaped extra-floral nectaries 222 Polish Journal of Entomology 76 (3) (EFN’s) located on the stems between the petioles of the evenly bipinnate leaves (SO 2004) (Figs 5-9). -

Weevils are a diverse group of plant-feeding beetles and occur in most terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems. This chapter documents the diversity and distribution of 295 weevil species found in the Canadian Prairies Ecozone belonging to the families Dryophthoridae (9 spp.), Brachyceridae (13 spp.), and Curculionidae (273 spp.). Weevils in the Prairies Ecozone represent approximately 34% of the total number of weevil species found in Canada. Notable species with distributions restricted to the Prairies Ecozone, usually occurring in one or two provinces, are candidates for potentially rare or endangered status. Résumé. Les charançons forment un groupe diversifié de coléoptères phytophages et sont présents dans la plupart des écosystèmes terrestres et dulcicoles. Le présent chapitre décrit la diversité et la répartition de 295 espèces de charançons vivant dans l’écozone des prairies qui appartiennent aux familles suivantes : Dryophthoridae (9 spp.), Brachyceridae (13 spp.) et Curculionidae (273 spp.). Les charançons de cette écozone représentent environ 34 % du total des espèces de ce groupe présentes au Canada. Certaines espèces notables, qui ne se trouvent que dans cette écozone — habituellement dans une ou deux provinces — mériteraient d’être désignées rares ou en danger de disparition. -

Anderson * Introduction The species of the genus Smicronyx occurring in North America north of Mexico were last revised in 1894 by W. G. Dietz. Since that time the efforts of numerous collectors have brought thousands of specimens of Smicronyx and a great deal of information into various museums. Unfortunately, the revision by Dietz has proved very inadequate either for determining and arranging that material or for use as a basis for more detailed studies of the various species and groups of species with respect to their relationships and limits. He did not designate type specimens for any of the species; the identity of some species was not clear because the types were not studied; and no information on the biology was provided. Moreover, a number of scattered papers containing descriptions of new species or information on described species have been published since Dietz's revision. Annotated checklist of the weevils (Curculionidae sensu lato ) of North America, Central America, and the West Indies (Coleoptera: Curculionoidea) Charles W. O'Brien and Guillermo J. Wibmer INTRODUCTION This checklist treats the names of the 843 genera and 7,068 species (as well as their synonyms) currently recognized as valid that are found in the New World north of South America (except for those from Trinidad and Tobago which will be considered in a subsequent publication on South American Curculionidae sensu lato). The idea for a weevil checklist originated with Ross Arnett, Jr. as part of the North American Beetle Fauna Project. When this project was terminated in 1980, we decided to expand the scope of the checklist and publish it in an annotated form. While it owes its origin to the NABFP it is published independently of that organization. The checklists of the weevils of North America (Leng 1920, Leng and Mutchler 1927 and 1933, Blackwelder 1939, and Blackwelder and Blackwelder 1948), and of Mexico, Central America, the West Indies and South America (Blackwelder 1947) have become increasingly outdated because of numerous revisions and descriptions of new taxa. In this list we have added many new distribution records as well. We have attempted to follow the current classifications of most specialists, as published. For this reason the classification used here is not identical with that of the Coleopterorum Catalogus, the two checklists mentioned above, nor that used by Kissinger (1964). We have tried to verify all citations by checking original references and those "Not seen" are so marked in the bibliography. -

Estas plantas se emplean en la medicina tradicional de numerosos países y presentan actividad biológica inte- resante. Después de haber detallado botánicamente esta familia de plantas, que ha sido y que sigue siendo muy estudiada, se recogen los estudios fitoquímicos sobre numerosas especies. Los metabolitos característicos son los xantonas, una clase de compuestos no muy difundidos en el mundo vegetal. Son característicos también derivados de los seco-iridoides, y algunos alcaloides. Palabras claves: Gentianaceae, actividad biológica, xantonas, secoiridoides, alcaloides. Abstract This paper is a review on the secondary metabolites of the Gentianaceae family. These plants are very well known as remedies in the traditional medicine of many countries because they present a number of biological activities. After a botanical presentation of this family, that is still studied, the phytochemical research of many species are reported. The most characteristic metabolites are xanthones, a class of natural products that is not very widespread in plants. Characteristic are also the seco-iridoids and alkaloids. The results of measurements and characteristics most typical for larvae and pupae of Cleonini are newly extracted and critically discussed, along with some records given previously. Keys for the determination of selected Cleonini species based on their larval and pupal characteristics are attached. Dyar’s law was used for the estimation of a number of larval instars of C. pigra. Descriptions of habitats, adult behavior, host plants, life cycle, and biotic interactions are reported here. Adults and larvae feed on plants from the Asteraceae family only (genera Carduus, Cirsium, Centaurea, and Onopordum).
