© Kenneth Berger DOI: https://doi.org/10.22439/fs.v0i24.5529 ISSN: 1832-5203 Foucault Studies, No. 24, pp. 125-150, June 2018 From the End of Man to the Art of Life: Rereading Foucault’s Changing Aesthetics Kenneth Berger, Brown University ABSTRACT: In Foucault’s writing throughout the 1960s, in which he foregrounds the critical function of language and signification, works of art and literature – and works of avant-garde art and literature in particular – appear prominently and are the objects of sustained theoretical investment. In the 1970s, however, as Foucault moves away from his earlier concern with language’s capacity to dissolve “man” and begins to concentrate instead on the ways in which man is governed, works of art and literature no longer possess the same political promise for him and drop out almost completely from his writing. Yet the question of aesthetics does not disappear for him entirely, and, in his final years, he returns to it, though with his analysis now directed at what he calls an “art” or “aesthetics of life.” In this paper, I examine these developments with the aim of drawing out the connections between Foucault’s changing view of aesthetics and the larger transformations that take shape within his overall project. Against this background, I argue that Foucault’s call for an art of life, in which the individual develops techniques for continually reinventing his or her existence, does not necessitate abandoning the avant- garde aesthetic practices that he had previously advocated. Rather, I assert, his conception of an art of life – when read in conjunction with his theoriZation of critique as a “permanent” questioning of the limits imposed on us – offers a new framework for reimagining both the function of those practices and their legacies in culture today. -

ISBN: 0415245680 One difficult task for educators is the struggle to decide what should be included in the curriculum. All teachers, regardless of disciplinary field or level of education, grapple with the selection of topics and texts to organize discussions of a particular subject. What is not common to all teachers, perhaps, is the problem that arises when the “subject” (multiple meanings intended) specifically writes against the academic practices typically utilized in making curricular decisions. Foucault rejected many standard academic practices, such as canonization, biographical reading, and attempts to totalize an author’s theoretical contribution by reading her “oeuvre.” Given these constraints, how does one write a book intended to serve as an accessible introduction to a critical theorist whose scholarship and political affiliations were prolific and complex? This was the challenge Sara Mills faced as she wrote the text at hand. Overall, the author has successfully produced a straightforward and instructive examination of the work of Michel Foucault that is mindful of the potential theoretical pitfalls of such an endeavor. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested the work of Foucault, but especially to persons who have little prior exposure to the philosopher, and/or who want a brief survey of his ideas. It will make an excellent textbook for undergraduate or graduate courses that deal with issues of power, culture and social problems. The book will also be a good sourcebook for policy makers or professionals in the human services interested in linking critical theory, practice and activism. -

Introduction: Towards a History of Ignorance Cornel Zwierlein As ignorance is always larger than knowledge, a concise and complete intro- duction or a general theory of a History of Ignorance seems a priori impossible. The following lines therefore do not claim to rise to such Olympic fields; they are more a sketch of problems, of points of views and of possible approaches that might arise when one starts to write histories of forms of ignorance and how people coped with ignorance in the past. And, being subserviant to the combined work of all contributors to this collective enterprise, this introduc- tion proceeds largely by taking the examples from the volume itself in an inductive way, trying to generalize some of the problems raised there to such a level that other scholars and studies might link their proper ideas and work with what these combined case studies can offer. 1 A ‘Grammar’ The first step of approaching the problem of a history of ignorance might be to borrow questions and terminology from the sociology of ignorance, because for some decades in this field of the humanities, a specific focus on, and a ter- minology for those problems has been developing. But the historian will be quickly disappointed by the results of simply re-projecting those schemes con- ceived for the problems of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries back into the past (cf. for more on that and for prudent reflexions on the terminologies offered the framing last contribution by William O’Reilly in this volume). If one only recalls the wealth of the terminology of ignorantia already worked out by medieval lawyers and theologians, it could seem reductionist or even ignorant to use the perhaps less fitting technical terms utilized by sociologists, prob- lematizing the decision-making occurring under circumstances of ignorance concerning the problems of climate change or terrorist attacks. -

History and the social sciences have taken up the challenge and now offer a vast range of approaches and problematizations that overflow the narrow confines of the history and sociology of science.1 The creation of the American journal KNOW in 2017 and the Journal for the History of Knowledge in the Netherlands in 2019 has added to a process of institutionalization that began nearly twenty years ago with the publication of two iconic books. The first, Ways of Knowing (2000) by the medical historian and professor at the University of Manchester John Pickstone, sought to build a transdisciplinary history in which the histories of science, technology, and medicine converge, while the second, A Social History of Knowledge by cultural historian Peter Burke, professor at the University of Cambridge, gave new impetus to the historical sociology of knowledge.2 France was not to be outdone: the launch in 2007 of the Revue d’anthropologie des connaissances edited by Dominique Vinck was followed by the publication in 2007 and 2011 of the two weighty multi-authored volumes of Lieux de savoir edited by Christian Jacob. -

Thought and knowledge are essentially activities on the part of the subject understood anthropologically or transcendentally. 2. The history of knowledge exhibits teleological progress towards a better and more comprehensive account of its objects. In contrast to traditional epistemology, both Heidegger and Foucault show how thought and knowledge are not just acts, which can be attributed to the subject but also events which elude any such subjective characterization. They also show us how the history of knowledge exhibits ruptures when the very character of knowledge undergoes drastic transformation in the course of history. The dissertation concludes by hinting at how these new accounts of thought and knowledge have the potential to shake the very foundations of epistemology and lead us to a new framework for discussing the most basic questions of epistemology, towards an epistemology of ruptures. -

Signature: _____________________________ Date: _________________________________ Page i Abstract This thesis investigates the inclusion of graphic novels in library collections and whether the format encourages teenagers to use libraries and read in their free time. Graphic novels are bound paperback or hardcover works in comic-book form and cover the full range of fiction genres, manga (Japanese comics), and also nonfiction. Teenagers are believed to read less in their free time than their younger counterparts. The importance of recreational reading necessitates methods to encourage teenagers to enjoy reading and undertake the pastime. Graphic novels have been discussed as a popular format among teenagers. As with reading, library use among teenagers declines as they age from childhood. The combination of graphic novel collections in school and public libraries may be a solution to both these dilemmas. Teenagers’ views were explored through focus groups to determine their attitudes toward reading, libraries and their use of libraries; their opinions on reading for school, including reading for English classes and gathering information for school assignments; and their liking for different reading materials, including graphic novels. -

Rev9-02 26/2/03 16:33 Página 89 Jill Robbins* ➲ Globalization, Publishing, and the Marketing of “Hispanic” Identities Summary: My article explores the complex Spanish reaction to recent changes in the Spanish-language publishing business as indicative of an ambivalence toward Spain’s place in the new global order, particularly by liberal intellectuals who associate books and bookstores with resistance and solidarity. The purchase of important Spanish publis- hers by international media conglomerates also implies to some a loss of national identity and cultural values, at the same time as the internationalization of the publishing business represents Spain’s incorporation into the European community and the world economy. The European Union, however, and Spain in particular, have globalized and marketed Latin America through business ventures, NGOs and cooperative efforts linked both to the embassies and to the international corporations. The resulting contradictions –the resistance to and welcoming of globalization, the nostalgia for, economic colonization of and rejection of Latin America– affect what is currently published in Spain by Spanish and Latin American authors and how it is marketed. During the summer of 2000, a series of articles appeared in the Spanish daily El País addressing the changes in publishing, both in Spain and abroad, and the pernicious effects of those changes on the real and perceived relevance of bookstores, editors, aut- hors, and books themselves, especially in comparison to the decades immediately follo- wing the Spanish Civil War and World War II. In those years, Leftist Spanish intellec- tuals sensed an affinity with their Latin American counterparts, and that alliance was forged and maintained in Spain through the often clandestine circulation of books by Latin American and exiled Spanish authors. -

Classificatory schemes of the sciences have a preeminent function in such a context. They imply a reflection that exceeds the problems proper to any one discipline, and precisely because they both reflect situations of fact and embody metascientific ideals, they contribute not only to the project of identifying domains of knowledge but also to the process of defining them.
