Secretary: Marlene Mitchell Ball State Football Spring Preview -- 2013 Q&A with Coach Pete Lembo

Q: As you enter your third year at Ball State, how have the student-athletes in the Ball State football program adapted to your philosophies? Coach Lembo: The most satisfying part of my experience at Ball State has been the daily interaction with our players from when we first arrived right up to the present day. It has been a true team approach since “day one” with everyone in the organization from top to bottom. Our coaches have put the players first and they have responded by buying into our plan and vision for the program. We have been honest with each other about the challenges we face here, as well as, fixing some of the problems we inherited. Our staff’s involvement in academics and the personal development of our players has helped us build trust, chemistry and unity very quickly. We have also worked hard to develop leadership skills in our players. This has paid off with good captains and a leadership council that provides me with meaningful feedback. Each member of the team has benefitted from the Olympic style strength and conditioning program and Coach Dave Feeley’s leadership in that area. We have a long way to go to build a complete program, but you cannot argue with the progress we have made on and off the field in just two years. I believe winning games is a by-product of the culture we have created here in the Fisher Football Complex.

Q: What are some of the strengths and weaknesses you see for the program entering the 2013 spring season? Coach Lembo: As we enter our third spring at Ball State, I am very pleased we have been able to maintain a high level of continuity on the coaching staff. Previous teams at Ball State had to deal with the unknowns of new coordinators and position coaches on almost a yearly basis. That is tough on an 18- to 22-year-old student-athlete. We have had the same three coordinators since we arrived, so the systems, terminology and approach have been consistent in all three phases of the game. In addition, we have had eight of nine assistants return each year. That is way above average for the Mid-American Conference. So again, the players at most positions know exactly what to expect every day from their coach. Each year, we tweak what we do based on the personnel, but the consistency in terminology definitely helps the players. They understand the expectations and they know all the mantras. We are not as old across the board as I would like to be, but we do have a good nucleus of key players returning that have had success in the last two seasons. We should have slightly more seniors in the starting lineup than the last two seasons. We lose some outstanding offensive linemen, two all-conference specialists and three experienced linebackers from last year’s nine-win team. We are anxious to see who will step up in those roles, as well as, from a leadership standpoint. It has been a good offseason and several guys have gotten bigger, faster and stronger. We shall see how they perform once the rubber hits the road.

Q: How much competition do you expect at different positions this spring? Coach Lembo: The retention rate of our student-athletes has been improving with each semester, so we are gradually improving our numbers and depth. Internal competition improves as your depth improves. They are directly related. In the past, there were some starters here that were not pushed because the talent or experience gap was too great between them and the next guy on the depth chart. We are slowly changing that trend. We are young at some positions such as the offensive line and linebacker, but there are some competitive guys at those spots. The other component is improving the quality of the talent in each consecutive recruiting class. Our veteran players were impressed with last year’s freshmen when they arrived for summer school. Hopefully, this year’s group will be even better. If the talent level gradually improves and we keep developing our players, we will end up with a mature, experienced team in a couple years.

Q: You made a few adjustments on the defensive coaching staff, talk about those changes and the impact on the defense. Coach Lembo: New assistant coach Shannon Morrison has fit in very nicely with our coaching staff so far. This is not a surprise, because Shannon worked with me at Lehigh and he has been a longtime friend of Jay Bateman’s. There is a lot of mutual respect between Shannon and Jay professionally. They don’t always agree, but they get on the same page quickly. Shannon is a smart, confident, insightful guy willing to share his opinions in staff meetings. He has a lot of experience at similar institutions to Ball State. Shannon is already making us better off the field and hopefully he can help us improve on the field as well. Our defensive backs have learned quickly that Coach Morrison is a demanding, “no non-sense” guy that expects detail from his players. They will get candid feedback from him at practice and in meetings. That position group needs to raise its level of expectation and perform with more consistency if we are going to improve on defense. There are some talented young guys in the secondary that will get a chance this spring to show the team what they can do. Daryl Dixon has adjusted well to coaching the outside linebackers and nickel backs this offseason. That is a critical position in our defensive scheme and now those players are getting more personal attention on a daily basis.

Q: Talk a little about the improvement of Keith Wenning as a quarterback and team leader. Coach Lembo: Keith Wenning has been on a steady upward trend since we arrived. His statistics improved from 2011 to 2012, but that does not tell the whole story. This is a young man who has changed his body in the weight room. He has improved his foot quickness and his core strength considerably over the last two years. Beyond that, Keith has truly become a student of the game. He really understands what all 22 players should be doing. The game makes sense to him. He has really benefitted from Coach Skrosky’s approach on the field and in the meeting room. He is starting to provide Rich with some feedback as well. It has to be a two-way street in that meeting room. Keith sets a great example for our younger quarterbacks. As a head coach, I appreciate how Keith has pushed himself out of his comfort zone as a vocal leader. He has embraced this aspect of his role as a quarterback. He is comfortable walking into my office and talking about the program. Keith has earned a lot of respect in the locker room. He loves Ball State and I know he will be a loyal alumnus once he graduates. Most importantly, he is grounded, humble and understands nothing should be taken for granted.
