    About the Nashville Bluegrass Band A digital version of this text is available online at www.nashvillebluegrassband.net/media With two Grammy Award-winning albums and two Entertainer of the Year honors from the International Bluegrass Music Association, four time IBMA Vocal Group of the Year, the Nashville Bluegrass Band, is no stranger to acclaim from critics and fans alike. The band’s personnel are sought-after, first-call studio musicians, known for a superior level of creativity and a commitment to traditional music styles. Collectively and singularly, the members of NBB have virtually defined the modern bluegrass sound. Nashville Bluegrass Band was initially formed to accompany Minnie Pearl and Vernon Oxford on a 1984 Grand Ole Opry package tour. Three original members are still in the group –– Alan O’Bryant (banjo), Pat Enright (guitar), and Mike Compton (mandolin) — though Compton left for twelve years, replaced by Roland White until Compton rejoined at the end of 2000. Award-winning fiddler Stuart Duncan has been a band member since 1985. Only the bass slot has seen any turnover; its current seat is held by talented Andy Todd, who came on board in 2005. NBB celebrated its twentieth anniversary in 2004 with the release of its sixth Grammy-nominated album, Twenty Year Blues. As if on cue, in 2006 the Nashville Bluegrass Band was invited to the White House by President George W. Bush to entertain in honor of visiting president of China, Hu Jintao. It was a very special honor for NBB as well — twenty years earlier, NBB had been the first bluegrass band ever to be permitted play in the People’s Republic of China.

The staid Monroe would never have created a concept album about a family band receiving therapy, for example. But while bluegrass purists may turn up their nose at King Wilkie’s most recent incarnation, folkies, alt-country enthusiasts, and fans of 1960s and ‘70s singer-songwriters might just fall in love with this project as the Wilkie Family channels Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Simon & Garfunkel, the Beatles, and other masters of pop. Though King Wilkie was a rather traditional bluegrass band at the time of their first release, 2004’s Broke, they began experimenting with their sound almost immediately, resulting in 2007’s Low Country Suite. But following LCS the band experienced a spate of personnel changes, leaving frontman Reid Burgess to regroup and reinvent once more. Hence this new venture, which is unlike anything King Wilkie has done. The Wilkie Family Singers are a 14-person band, featuring the shipping magnate patriarch, his six adult children (who are still living at home), some cousins, a cat, a parrot, a neighbor, a family friend, and, of course, Dr. Art, the family’s therapist/occasional pianist. If this is starting to sound like the indie movie flavor of the month, rest assured that there is no concrete storyline on the album, nor any guest appearances from bedheaded hipster heartthrobs.

    The Rt Hon Rishi Sunak MP Chancellor of the Exchequer 11 Downing St Westminster London SW1A 2AB 15 October 2020 Dear Chancellor, We are writing to you as representatives of the freelance arts sector in the hope that you will support the #MakeMusicWork campaign, which is backed by the Musicians’ Movement, the Incorporated Society of Musicians, and the many other organisations represented in this letter. This campaign offers two clear and viable solutions for the Government to take forward that will get our creative industries safely back to work. 1. Freelance Performers Support Scheme First, we ask that you introduce a new Freelance Performers’ Support Scheme to facilitate the reopening of music venues under social distancing and see the return of live performances. This new scheme would include grants for venues designed to cover the loss of income due to the reduced ticket sales required by social distancing guidelines. This grant would be in addition to the income generated from ticket sales. The scheme would also include a guaranteed fee for each performer with a cultural exemption on VAT for tickets. This would: - create a route back to work; kickstarting the live music sector, bringing back tens of thousands of viable jobs, uniting communities and protecting our national culture; - guarantee performers a minimum fee, even if COVID restrictions change, which in turn enables some financial security in these unprecedented times; - give venues and promoters the opportunity to programme in advance without financial insecurity, enabling promoters of all sizes to start curation and allowing their communities to connect once more; - be flexible and scalable in relation to government guidelines and ensure government spending is used effectively; - have transferable principles for other parts of the creative industries, with the potential for the sector to unite around a funding model that works for all arts-sector initiatives.
