Osterbrock University of Chicago/Lick Observatory, University of California, Santa Cruz, California 95064. USA Abstract. S. Chandrasekhar’s interactions with graduate students in his more than a quarter century at Yerkes Observatory are described. His graduate teaching, Ph.D. thesis students, colloquia and colloquium series, and seminar series were all important aspects of this side of his scientific research career. His managing editorship of The Astro- physical Journal, his one experience in observational astrophysics, a second paper he wrote describing some of the early observational work at Yerkes Observatory, and a third on “the case for astronomy” are all discussed. A famous myth about one of his courses is corrected, and the circumstances under which the “S. Candlestickmaker” parody was written are recounted. Chandra’s computers, recruited in the Williams Bay community, are mentioned. A complete or nearly complete table of all the thesis students who received their Ph.D. degrees under his supervision, at Yerkes and on the campus in Chicago up through his last one in Astronomy and Astrophysics in 1973, is presented, with references to their published thesis papers. 1 Introduction Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar spent more than a quarter of a century at Yerkes Observatory, a large part of his scientific career. While he was in residence there he wrote four books and more than two hundred papers, moved up the academic hierarchy from research associate to distinguished service professor, and became an American citizen. Other papers in this memorial issue of the Journal of Astro- physics and Astronomy summarize and evaluate Chandra’s research in the many different fields of astrophysics in which he successively worked, each written by a distinguished expert in that field. -

The annual EPHEMERALS Astronomical League Conference (ALCon) is this july 2012 month in Chicago, and I will be attending. We, as a club, are a part of the Astronomical League and are entitled to all the benefits included. For those of you who don’t 07/13 know, the Astronomical League is made up of many of Skywatch the astronomy clubs across the nation. They sponsor Northwest River Park many observing programs, such as the Messier Program, the Binocular Program, the Planetary Nebula 07/14, 11:00 am Program (which BBAA helped begin) and awards such BBAA Family Picnic as the National Young Astronomer Award, the Horkheimer/Smith Award, and many, many more. Northwest River Park They also publish a quarterly newsletter called The Large Picnic Shelter Reflector that every member receives. 07/20, 7:00 pm Back to ALCon, it’s like any other conference except there’s a bunch of astronomer nerds hanging out and Night Hike talking about astronomer stuff. There are speakers, Northwest River Park events and day trips. For example, this year there are trips to Yerkes Observatory, Fermilab, and the Adler 07/21 Planetarium. There will also be nightly star parties, a Nightwatch “Star-B-Que” and an awards banquet. It’s going to be Chippokes State Park bunches of fun and I’m sure I will have many stories to Surry, VA tell when I come back. -

Albert Einstein: Relativity, War, and Fame Daniel J. Kevles In , Princeton University Press published Albert Einstein’s The Meaning of Relativity, a popularization of his theory that has remained in print to this day, and that more than a half century ago Datus C. Smith, Jr., then the director of the Press, counted as one of its “crown jewels.”1 The book was the first in what has be- come a sizable number of volumes by and about Einstein that the Press has published, a number that continues to grow as succes- sive editions of his writings appear. Albert Einstein burst upon the world of physics in , at age twenty-six, when he was working as an examiner in the Swiss patent office in Bern and published three extraordinary scientific papers. One, speaking to the developing though somewhat con- troversial atomic theory of matter, demonstrated the reality of atoms and molecules. The other two—one advancing a quantum theory of light, the other proposing the special theory of rela- tivity—contributed decisively to the revolution in physics that marked the twentieth century. Two years later, in , Einstein began work on what became the general theory of relativity. The special theory discarded the assumption of Newtonian physics that there exists an absolute frame of reference in space against which all motion in the uni- verse can be measured. Taking no frame as privileged, it related how phenomena occurring in one inertial frame—that is, one moving at constant velocity—would appear in a second moving in relation to the first. The two frames might be, for example, two trains traveling at different constant speeds on neighboring tracks. -

Page2 GRIFFITH OBSERVER August The Rise and Fall of Astrophotography Dr. Joseph S.Tenn Department of Physics and Astronomy Sonoma State University Rohnert Park, California HONORABLE MENTION HUGHES GRIFFITH OBSERVER CONTEST 1987 Dr. Joe Tenn’s carefully crafted articles seem to be able to win a prize in the annual Hughes Aircraft Company Science Writing Contest any time he chooses to enter, and his students have occasionally won prizes, too. This heartens our outlook on higher education in America and provides interesting and unusual material for readers of this magazine. His last article, “Simon Newcomb, a Famous and Forgotten American Astronomer," appeared in the November, 1987, issue of the Griffith Observer, almost two years ago. It was saddled with several errors imposed by the editor, not the author, and we hope this time we have given Dr. Tenn’s most recent contribution more reliable preparation for print. His attention this time is fixed on the development of astrophotography. Onthe occasion of the January, 1987, American the first serious uses of chemical emulsions for Astronomical Society meeting in Pasadena, professional research. Less than fifty years earlier visiting astronomers were invited to tour the the first crude experiments suggested the Palomar Observatory. Wisconsin Society of Science Teachers Convention 2008 Report to the HPS Science Support Committee and North Central Chapter • Marcum Martz, Medical College of Wisconsin • Dan Miron, Cardinal Health • Paul Ward, Zablocki VA Medical Center • Paul Schmidt, WI DHFS, Radiation Protection Section WSST held its annual convention March 13-15 in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. As part of the mission of the HPS Science Support Committee and the NCCHPS to bring health physics to attention of middle schools and high schools, representatives of NCCHPS participated as presenters and exhibitors. The presentations consisted of two one-hour lectures and one three-hour lab workshop. The first lecture was on the topic of the fundamentals of radiation, including basic physics, units and sources of natural and man-made radiation. The nearly completed Power Point presentation by the SSC serves as the model for this lecture, which is well- suited as an introductory primer for middle/high school teachers. The second lecture was Radiation in Research, Medicine and Education. Both of these lectures were well- attended; we ran a little over the schedule due to many excellent questions asked, and much interest was generated. The three-hour lab workshop was less successful, possibly due to circumstances that were beyond our control: 1) the WSST program was accidentally printed with the page describing all the three-hour workshops left blank; no one knew about the workshop unless they pre-registered online. 2) The workshop was scheduled (by WSST) on the same morning of most of the off-site tours to such venues as Fermilab and Yerkes Observatory. -

Wilson Observatory, George Hale. Nobel prize winning physicist Robert Millikan served on the School’s Board of Trustees and conducted cosmic ray measurements on our campus in 1928. From 1930 to 1941 students and faculty from the School took annual trips to Pasadena to see the 100-inch Hooker telescope at Mt. Wilson and tour the Huntington Library and Caltech. Edwin Hubble gave the commencement address on our campus in 1942 and aluminized the mirror of an 8-inch telescope at the request of one of our students 10 years later. The Summer Science Program (SSP), which brought together some of the nation’s brightest math and science students to participate in an intensive, 6-week immersion in astronomy, operated on our campus for 40 years starting in 1959. A 24-inch astrograph built by Caltech was installed in an observatory building erected on our campus by UCLA in 1965 and was later used for preliminary testing of the UCSD Digicon spectrographs that were eventually installed on the Hubble Space Telescope.
