Tanzanians really make time for people and there is a lovely sense of community spirit. I volunteered in an orphanage for “street children called ‘Upendo’, which translates to ‘love’ in English. The kids here had often been orphaned because both parents had died of AIDs, or one parent had died and the other couldn’t afford to keep them. The facilities were basic and the children didn’t have possessions of their own to entertain them. It really hammered home how much we take for granted: when I got out packets of stickers and they would all crowd around me begging to be allowed another one to put on their pictures. Some of them would scoop up and collect all the leftovers, the cuttings of paper, card and glitter, so that they could decorate their rooms, in contrast to how we would just put these things in the bin.
