Kroger Sells 762-Store Business for $2.15 Billion - Advertisement - Kroger sells 762-store business for $2.15 billion February 5, 2018 The Kroger Co. and EG Group, a retailer based in the United Kingdom, announced a definitive agreement for the sale of Kroger's convenience store business unit for $2.15 billion. The companies expect to close the transaction during the first quarter of Kroger's fiscal year. As part of the agreement, EG Group will establish its North American headquarters in Cincinnati and continue to operate stores under their established banner names. Kroger announced in October 2017 its intention to explore strategic alternatives for its convenience store business, including a potential sale, in conjunction with Restock Kroger. 1 / 2 "Our convenience store business has been a part of our company for many years. We want to thank our management team and associates for their enduring commitment to our customers, and for the contributions they have made to build our supermarket fuel business," said Mike Schlotman, Kroger's executive vice president and chief financial officer. "As part of our regular review of assets, it has become clear that our strong convenience store business unit will better meet its full potential outside of our business." "One of the most important considerations in our decision-making process was continued operations to ensure minimal disruption to our associates. We are very pleased the EG Group plans to establish their North American headquarters in Cincinnati. EG Group is also a recognized international petrol forecourt convenience operator and they have a commercial model which clearly looks to enhance the consumer offer by working with leading retail brands customers know and trust," said Schlotman. "This is good for our associates across the country and for our headquarter city of Cincinnati. Throughout the process we were impressed with the EG Group's professionalism, investment commitment and more importantly their understanding of the U.S. convenience retail market. We now look forward to working with them closely to ensure a smooth transition for associates." Mohsin Issa, EG Group Founder and co-chief executive officer, said, "This is an exciting time for EG Group, the entry into the U.S. market presents a fantastic opportunity to deliver a successful retail offer to consumers across the various states. We have had much success across Europe and we firmly believe the Kroger assets present a fantastic foundation to overlay our retail experience and know-how in the U.S. We are committed to investing in the Kroger network, partnering with leading retail brands and working with the exceptional management team and associates transferring across to deliver a comprehensive retail offer." "Our business model is simple but effective — EG Group is creating a stronger relationship between consumers and leading retail brands they want to access. In the US we aim to create a retail environment which delivers convenience, provides value and serves as a retail destination offering excellent welfare to motorists who live and work near our petrol forecourt convenience retail stores," said Zuber Issa, EG Group founder and co-CEO. Kroger plans to use net proceeds from the sale to repurchase shares and to lower its net total debt to adjusted EBITDA ratio. Kroger's convenience store business operates in 18 states. It includes 66 franchise operations. The stores employ 11,000 associates and operate under the following banner names: Turkey Hill, Loaf 'N Jug, Kwik Shop, Tom Thumb and Quik Stop. Kroger's convenience store business generated revenue of $4 billion, including selling 1.2 billion gallons of fuel, in 2016. Kroger's supermarket fuel centers and its Turkey Hill Dairy are not included in the sale. Print Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org) 2 / 2.

  • EG Group Owners in Lead Position to Buy $8.4Bn Asda
UK: EG Group owners in lead position to buy $8.4bn Asda Billionaire owners of international forecourt operator EG Group have stunned the markets by moving into pole position to buy supermarket chain Asda. Mohsin Issa and his brother Zuber are leading the race to acquire British supermarket business Asda, valued at £6.5 billion ($8.4bn), on the back of building an international fuel and convenience empire with Euro Garages Group. Sky News has reported that the two brothers from Blackburn (UK), and TDR Capital, the London-based private equity backer of EG Group, have been selected by Walmart as the frontrunners to take over Asda. If the bid backed by the Issa brothers and TDR is successful it will see Asda, which operates more than 600 stores in the UK, return to British hands for the first time since 1999. Initial reports had private equity firm Apollo Global Management as the leading option to buy Asda. A key part of the operation that has put the Issa brothers and TDR in pole position is the possibility of expanding the supermarket business in their petrol station network. Just a week ago, Asda announced it would be trialling a new convenience store concept at the tree EG Group stations. With acquisition after acquisition, EG Group has built an empire since its formation in 2016 and now employs 50,000 people across almost 6,000 sites in the UK, U.S., Europe and Australia. U.S. retailing giant Walmart has been looking to offload parts of its British business to focus on defending its position against Amazon and explore other opportunities in more attractive markets like India.

  • EG Group Convenience Stores and DAV Partner to Help Change the Lives of Veterans
Source: DAV (Disabled American Veterans) June 24, 2020 07:00 ET EG Group Convenience Stores and DAV Partner to Help Change the Lives of Veterans WESTBOROUGH, MASS., June 24, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- This summer, EG America and the 1,682 convenience stores it operates will launch a national campaign to raise funds for DAV (Disabled American Veterans). EG donations will help DAV ensure that injured and ill veterans can access the full range of benefits available to them. The convenience stores participating in the promotion include Cumberland Farms, Certified Oil, Fastrac, Kwik Shop, Loaf ‘N Jug, Minit Mart, Quik Stop, Tom Thumb and Turkey Hill. Their goal is to raise over $250,000 for DAV, an organization that changes the lives of more than one million veterans, of all eras, every year. Beginning June 24 and through the month of July, store employees will ask customers to donate an amount of their choosing to DAV during checkout. During the campaign, the stores will offer a free cup of coffee to service members and veterans as a “thank you” for their sacrifices. “We know many of our team members and guests are veterans and believe it is important to recognize and give back to those who have served our country,” said George Fournier, President of EG America. “Partnering with DAV gives our store teams a collective purpose and allows them to connect with the communities where they live and work in a meaningful way.” “Last year, EG America shattered its goal during a wildly successful campaign to raise funds directly supporting the vital programs we provide to the men and women who served,” said DAV CEO Marc Burgess.
