In the year 2000, Johanna Sinisalo’s Finlandia Prize for her novel Troll: A Love Story (published as Not Before Sundown in the UK) was something that the sceptics could write off as just a momentary anomaly in a field dominated by realism. History has proven them wrong. Since then, the Finlandia Prize has been awarded to many works that could fall under the umbrella of speculative fic- tion. Attitudes have changed both in publishing hous- es and among readers. The grassroots are thriving, launching the careers of many unique sf/f voices, and many mainstream authors have adopted the tools of speculative fiction in their own work. The trailblazers of Finnish fandom, both professionals and passion- ate amateurs, have created opportunities and spread the word about Finnish Weird. The border between realism and fantasy has blurred.     MJUR 2017, Issue 8 59 The Weird: Aesthetic Effect and Power Lauren Lipski Colorado Mesa University Abstract Rod Serling’s The Twilight Zone, Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher,” and The Who’s Tommy have all been called weird, but what makes these texts weird? This paper examines weirdness beyond its use as a value judgment or genre category. Similar to Sianne Ngai’s Our Aesthetic Categories (2012), which describes cute, zany, and interesting as aesthetic effects, my project also describes the weird as an aesthetic effect. By drawing upon its etymology, my project establishes the weird as a term referencing a power, “an effect that holds an audience enthralled.” Occurring either via ruptures of coherency or when distinct boundaries are blurred to create “in-between states,” the weird as a critical term has the potential to examine our contemporary preoccupation with destabilization. My paper poses several questions: Can the weird be reclaimed from a subjective judgment to one of critical application? How is context important in determining what is weird and what is not? How does the weird challenge what society considers normal, logical, and stable? By establishing the weird as an analytical term, my project provides a lens through which to examine texts that perplex and discomfort, yet simultaneously enthrall, an audience. Many aspects of Tolkien’s world have been analyzed and discussed, but it remains a relevant topic for both specific questions concerning Tolkien’s world and general questions concerning worldbuilding in literature. Sub-creating Arda , edited by Dimitra Fimi and Thomas Honegger, makes a valuable contribution that expands on both theoretical areas, applies theories of worldbuilding to Middle-earth, and draws interesting parallels to other fictional worlds. Because the field of worldbuilding is incredibly rich, Sub-creating Arda is not exhaustive, but nevertheless makes significant contributions to contemporary academic problematizations of the field and will undoubtedly inspire new arguments and new approaches within the field of worldbuilding.     Concentric: Literary and Cultural Studies March 2017: 71-96 DOI: 10.6240/concentric.lit.2017.43.1.05 Brave New Weird: Anthropocene Monsters in Jeff VanderMeer’s The Southern Reach Gry Ulstein Faculty of Humanities Utrecht University, The Netherlands Abstract This paper investigates and compares language and imagery used by contemporary ecocritics in order to argue that the Anthropocene discourse contains significant parallels to cosmic horror discourse and (new) weird literature. While monsters from the traditional, Lovecraftian weird lend themselves well to Anthropocene allegory due to the coinciding fear affect in both discourses, the new weird genre experiments with ways to move beyond cosmic fear, thereby reimagining the human position in the context of the Anthropocene. Jeff VanderMeer’s trilogy The Southern Reach (2014) presents an alien system of assimilation and ecological mutation into which the characters are launched. It does this in a manner that brings into question human hierarchical coexistence with nonhumans while also exposing the ineffectiveness of current existential norms. This paper argues that new weird stories such as VanderMeer’s are able to rework and dispel the fearful paralysis of cosmic horror found in Lovecraft’s literature and of Anthropocene monsters in ecocritical debate. The Southern Reach and the new weird welcome the monstrous as kin rather than enemy.     Nordic Journal of African Studies 1(2): 82–93 (1992) The Role of the Kalevala in Finnish Culture and Politics URPO VENTO Finnish Literature Society, Finland The question has frequently been asked: would Finland exist as a nation state without Lönnrot's Kalevala? There is no need to answer this, but perhaps we may assume that sooner or later someone would have written the books which would have formed the necessary building material for the national identity of the Finns. During the mid 1980s, when the 150th anniversary of the Kalevala was being celebrated in Finland, several international seminars were held and thousands of pages of research and articles were published. At that time some studies appeared in which the birth of the nation state was examined from a pan-European perspective. SMALL NATION STATES "The nation state - an independent political unit whose people share a common language and believe they have a common cultural heritage - is essentially a nineteenth-century invention, based on eighteenth-century philosophy, and which became a reality for the most part in either the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. The circumstances in which this process took place were for the most part marked by the decline of great empires whose centralised sources of power and antiquated methods of administrations prevented an effective response to economic and social change, and better education, with all the aspirations for freedom of thought and political action that accompany such changes." Thus said Professor Michael Branch (University of London) at a conference on the literatures of the Uralic peoples held in Finland in the summer of 1991.
