This thesis uses a modified version of the ‘two-way traffic’ model used in literature and science studies, to consider a three-way exchange of ideas between science, literature and religion in the mid- and later nineteenth century. I use popular scientific treatises and religious poetry published between 1839 and 1889 to consider some of the ways in which some Victorian writers attempted to unite religious and scientific cosmologies to create an inclusive, coherent scheme in which God co-exists with scientific laws without contradiction. I argue that poetry, and particularly epic, played an important part in enabling some Victorians who were concerned about a potential incompatibility between science and religion, to explore and propose solutions to perceived conflicts. In addition to this intermediary role, poetry acts in its own right to exchange ideas, in the form of images, tropes and figurative devices, with both science and religion. I examine the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins and James Clerk Maxwell in relation to their attitudes to thermodynamics. In terms of epic poetry, I focus upon Philip James Bailey’s Festus and Edward Henry Bickersteth’s Yesterday, Today and Forever. I also consider the popular scientific treatise and use literary analytical methods, such as close reading, to trace instances of poetic and religious allusion, and I note affinities between epic poetry and popular scientific treatises. I make case studies of The Unseen Universe by Balfour Stewart and Peter Guthrie Tait, and the very public debate between William Whewell and David Brewster on the possibility of extraterrestrial life. Nearly all of the poems and treatises on which I focus in this thesis have been understudied, especially in the field of literature and science. I aim to reposition these texts as important routes for further study in this field. In order to investigate patterns of exchange between science, religion and poetry, I focus in my thesis upon three chief cosmological questions: the future of the universe in light of Victorian understandings of the laws of thermodynamics; the presence, or not, of a divide 3 between the spiritual and earthly realms; and the existence or otherwise of extraterrestrial life. Introduction 6 Introduction Overview My thesis is chiefly concerned with the ways in which poetry and science dealt with certain theological problems raised by particular developments in astronomy and energy physics. While one of the fields in which my thesis works is science and religion, it does not engage with the nebulous question of whether a conflict existed between science and religion in the nineteenth century. Each chapter examines different moments where astronomy or thermodynamics and Christianity interacted, and how poetry intervened between religion and the sciences. Often these encounters are acts of reconciliation by the author, or an explicit attempt to deny the existence of a conflict between science and religion, thereby acknowledging the possibility of such a dissonance even as they seek to dismiss it. My thesis examines the exchange of language, tropes and ideas between religious poetry and popular scientific treatises. I argue that religious poetry, and particularly epic poetry, provided a space for people perturbed by questions of science and religion to explore and come to terms with their implications. The eschatological epic could provide for the Victorians a useful place to consider the theological repercussions of new scientific discoveries. Allusion and technical vocabulary are two of the most frequent devices for including astronomy in poetic imaginings of the afterlife, and allowed poets to explore how a religious afterlife and a scientifically understood universe might interact in a cohesive fashion. In turn, poetry performed several roles in popular scientific treatises. Poetry, in the form of quotations and epigrams and allusion, as well as figurative language and other traditionally poetic devices, allowed science writers to achieve a number of rhetorical and argumentative goals. The inclusion of poetry, and especially religious poetry, provided a straightforward way for science writers to align themselves with a particular outlook, that of the poet, without writing it in so many words. Poetry often acts as an intermediary between science and religion. Introduction 7 Each of the texts I have selected are notable for their popularity or influence in the nineteenth century, and for being understudied in contemporary criticism. Each chapter is to some extent an act of recovery, as I aim to demonstrate that these epic poems and scientific treatises contribute significantly to modern understandings of nineteenth century science, literature and religion. Chronology My thesis covers a span of fifty years, from 1839-1889. This period represents the first fifty years of the lifespan of Philip James Bailey’s poem Festus, from its initial publication to its much-expanded fiftieth-anniversary edition. 1839-1889 saw several moments of peaking anxieties about the potential incompatibility of science and religion, including the publication of Origin of Species in 1859, the rising popularity of materialism and scientific naturalism, and the development of classical thermodynamics, which challenged the possibility of an eternal afterlife. Thermodynamics in particular triggered concerns about how God and an afterlife could be reconciled with an increasingly scientifically understood universe. Other developments, such as those in

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: The discovery of Venus's atmosphere has been widely attributed to the Russian academician M.V. Lomonosov from his observations of the 1761 transit of Venus from St. Petersburg. Other observers at the time also made observations that have been ascribed to the effects of the atmosphere of Venus. Though Venus does have an atmosphere one hundred times denser than the Earth’s and refracts sunlight so as to produce an ‘aureole’ around the planet’s disk when it is ingressing and egressing the solar limb, many eighteenth century observers also upheld the doctrine of cosmic pluralism: believing that the planets were inhabited, they had a preconceived bias for believing that the other planets must have atmospheres. A careful re-examination of several of the most important accounts of eighteenth century observers and comparisons with the observations of the nineteenth century and 2004 transits shows that Lomonosov inferred the existence of Venus’s atmosphere from observations related to the ‘black drop’, which has nothing to do with the atmosphere of Venus. Several observers of the eighteenth-century transits, includ- ing Chappe d’Auteroche, Bergman, and Wargentin in 1761 and Wales, Dymond, and Rittenhouse in 1769, may have made bona fide observations of the aureole produced by the atmosphere of Venus.

This is a key question not only for political theory but also for contemporary political practices. For instance, a call for global solidarity in the face of rapid global warming (UNDP 2007), which seems ever more urgent in 2017, assumes a shared planetary identity across the currently prevailing differences and divisions. It seems that there can be no solidarity without a common identity at some level of human being. Environmentalists maintain that all humans share an important thing in common, namely planet Earth and its sphere of life, to which we essentially belong. In contrast, many political realists believe that humans are essentially tribal beings, or at least will remain so in the foreseeable future. Vol. 1: Text Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of English Language and Literature Clive Simmonds May 2013 1 Abstract This thesis examines the publishing history of Algernon Charles Swinburne during his lifetime (1837-1909). The first chapter presents a detailed narrative from his first book in 1860 to the mid 1870s: it includes the scandal of Poems and Ballads in 1866; his subsequent relations with the somewhat dubious John Camden Hotten; and then his search to find another publisher who was to be Andrew Chatto, with whom Swinburne published for the rest of his life. It is followed by a chapter which looks at the tidal wave of criticism generated by Poems and Ballads but which continued long after, and shows how Swinburne responded. The third and central chapter turns to consider the periodical press, important throughout his career not just for reviewing but also as a very significant medium for publishing poetry. Chapter 4 on marketing looks closely at the business of producing and of selling Swinburne’s output. Finally Chapter 5 deals with some aspects of his career after the move to Putney, and shows that while Theodore Watts, his friend and in effect his agent, was making conscious efforts to reshape the poet, some of Swinburne’s interests were moving with the tide of public taste; how this was demonstrated in particular by his volume of Selections and how his poetic oeuvre was finally consolidated in the Collected Edition at the end of his life.

Ferdinand became interested in astronomy by reading Camille Flammarion‘s books. In 1891, Quénisset, 19 years old, joined Flamamrion’s Society Astronomique de France as assistant librarian. At the time, the SAF was located at 28 rue Serpente in Paris. Soon, Quenisset worked also as an observer at Flammarion’s observatory in Juvisy-sur-Orge, where he discovered a comet in 1893. He was forced to abandon astronomy for several years while he performed his military service, but then returned to Juvisy to resume his post at the observatory until 1947. Massive gas giants on the same size scale as Jupiter, they orbit their host stars closely. This proximity results in large stellar winds capable of stripping away a planet’s atmosphere. Developing a more complete understanding of atmospheric mass loss and evolution in planetary bodies is critical, and Hot Jupiter systems are accessible analogues. This project will seek to create a computational model capable of estimating mass loss rates due to stellar winds. A Monte Carlo method is utilized to take an ensemble of single, high-energy energetic neutral particles, produced by kilo-electronvolt stellar wind ions, and and trace their path through theoretical atmospheres. As these particles travel, they collide many times, imparting energy to the atmospheric molecules and potentially exciting them to high enough energies to escape the planetary gravity. Different mechanisms for particle interaction and escape will also be analyzed in order to determine their impact on the mass loss rates.

Critical cosmopolitan orientation has usually been embedded in a non-geocentric physical (NGP) cosmology that locates the human drama on the surface of planet Earth within wide scales of time and space. Although neither a necessary nor a sufficient condition for critical cosmopolitanism, NGP cosmology provides a contrast to the underpinnings of centric cosmologies, such as those of Aristotle, which see the world as revolving around a particular observer, theorist and/or communal identity. NGP cosmology makes it plausible to envisage all humans as part of the same species. The connection works also through homology and analogy. An astronomic theory can be isomorphic with an ethico-political theory, that is, a structure-preserving mapping from one to the other is possible. Key cosmopolitan theorists have situated morality within a cosmic framework. However, the ethico-political implications of the NGP cosmology are ambiguous. Nietzsche was among the first to articulate its sceptical and nihilist implications. Various reactions have encouraged territorial nationalism and geopolitics. I suggest that critical cosmopolitical orientation should now be grounded on the notion of cosmic evolution, which is not only contextual, historical, pluralist and open-ended but also suggests that humanity is not a mere accident of the cosmos.
