Chorigi: Serge and Yanna Hadji-Mihaloglou The Evolution of Anatolia College Anatolia College evolved out of the reorganized Merzifon (Marsovan) Seminary in 1886. Its origins may be traced back to the “Haystack Meeting” at Williams College in 1806 and to Bebek Seminary, founded in Constantinople by Cyrus Hamlin in 1840. The Seminary portion of the School moved inland to Marsovan in 1862, while the liberal arts division remained in Constantinople and became Robert College (and eventually, the modern- day Bogazici University). Anatolia College itself was founded in 1886 and chartered by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 1894. Following the forced closure of the Marsovan campus by the Turkish government in 1921, the School relocated 800 miles due west to Thessaloniki in 1924. Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos had encouraged then-President George E. White to re-open the School there in order to serve the city’s increased educational needs resulting from the massive influx of Asia Minor refugees. In large part, this institutional culture was fostered by Carl and Ruth Compton, who dedicated their lives to the School. In celebrating Anatolia’s Centennial in 1986, the Board of Trustees arranged for the publication of Carl’s Memoirs, which he was persuaded to write for this occasion by Everett Stephens, former Chair of the Board and pre-WWII teacher. They were edited and annotated with scholarly care in a handsome vol- ume by Professor John O. Iatrides ’50, son of Carl’s colleague and our former teacher Orestes Iatrides, as well as by Bill Compton, Carl and Ruth’s son and Anatolia teacher in the 1950s. The Memoirs were published under the title The Morning Cometh: 45 Years with Anatolia College (New Rochelle, NY: Aristide D. Caratzas, 1986). Our Armenian brothers and sisters generously sponsored a Greek translation with a moving introduction on the Compton legend by former President Bill McGrew. The translation was titled •ËÌÂÚÒÓÂÈ ... 45 ¯ÚfiÓÈ· Ì ÙÔ ∫ÔϤÁÈÔ ∞Ó·- ÙfiÏÈ· (Thessaloniki: Armenian Cultural Association Hamazkian, 1997). In 2002, Bill Compton, John’s brother, Manos Iatridis ’46, and John edited and informally published in a limited edition Carl’s letters to Ruth as Letters of Carl C. Compton to his Wife Ruth, While Working as Director of UNRRA Opera- tions in Thessaloniki, Greece. These letters cover Carl’s service at the United Na- tions Relief and Rehabilitation Administration right after WWII, a period dur- ing which Ruth was delayed from joining him. All three of these publications re- cently ran out of print. As expected, a phalanx of Anatolians stepped forward to ensure that Carl and Ruth’s lessons of community service and leadership by inspiration and example continue to be transmitted. A couple of years ago, President Richard Jackson, 12 Acknowledgements in the course of one of the many briefings he provides on the School, mentioned to my wife and muse, Yanna, and myself that the Memoirs were about to go out of print. Yanna instantly volunteered us to republish them. Dick Jackson, in ad- dition to offering continuing encouragement, contributed the new Foreword. It provides perspective on Anatolia’s evolution since the original 1986 edition and emphasizes Carl’s contributions to building not only buildings, but character. Dick Jackson and my fellow Trustee Angelos Billis ’47, former Vice-President of the Alumni Association and former President of the Friends’ Association, suggested that we add Carl’s letters, of which I was previously unaware. Grin- nell College, Carl and Ruth’s alma mater, provided materials and publications hitherto unknown to Anatolia. Trustee Anestis Logothetis ’52, Grinnell ’55, of- fered invaluable assistance in our communications with Grinnell College, and Grinnell Professor Gerald Lalonde carried out extensive research in compiling a section of Appendix B. Dr. Phil Holland, the High School’s English Chair, and Ifigeneia Sougaraki, our Scholarships Director, filled in on the Grinnell affilia- tion, from which Anatolia continues to benefit. We believe that more of our alumni have gone on to Grinnell for undergraduate study on scholarships than to any other college in the U.S. Phil also updated Anatolia’s Chronology, which had originally been compiled by Everett Stephens and his wife Mary for their history of the School also written for the Centennial, Survival Against All Odds (New Rochelle, NY: Caratzas, 1986). John Iatrides assisted, once again, by con- tributing an original scholarly bibliographical note on the turbulent times the Comptons had lived through. Angelos Papaioannou ’69, Trustee and former President of the Thessaloniki Alumni Association, Rea Samara ’72, Anatolia’s PR Director, Karen Bohrer, ACT’s Bissell Library Director, and her assistant Liza Vachtsevanou all assisted greatly in locating and scanning School photographs. Karen also brought in and consolidated the School photographs from Boston to aid us and future re- searchers. We found UNRRA photographs at the US Library of Congress and were able to copy posters from various Armenian American sources to which Colgate University Professor Peter Balakian kindly referred us. Greek posters of the WWII and Civil War period came from Spyros Karachristou’s Greek Posters (Athens: 3rd ed., Kedros 2003). Yannis Megas ’64, who among his many other accomplishments has published several books on Thessaloniki, and Angelos Pa- paioannou helped us identify School photographs. Rea Samara gathered additional materials, aided cheerfully by our PR assis- tants Athina Rousidou ’97 and Lena Katsarika ACT ’05.

Important aspects of the rich scientific debate still are the collapse of the Byzantine state, the formation of smaller political entities, and the processes through which such immense changes took place.     Abstracts Visualizing the Byzantine City Charalambos Bakirtzis Depictions of cities: in the icon “Allegory of Jerusalem on High,” two cities are depicted, one in the foothills and the other at the edge of a rocky mountain. The lengthy inscription of the icon is of interest from a town-planning and architectural standpoint. The imperial Christian city: in the mosaics of the Rotunda in Thessalonike, the city is not shown with walls, but with palaces and other splendid public buildings, declaring the emperor’s authority as the sole ruler and guarantor of the unity of the state and the well-being of cities, which was replaced by the authority of Christ. The appearance of the walled city: all the events shown in the mosaics (seventh century) of the basilica of St. Demetrios are taking place outside the walls of the city, probably beside the roads that lead to it. The city’s chora not only protected the city; it was also protected by it. A description of the city/kastron: John Kameniates lived through the capture of Thessalonike by the Arabs in the summer of 904. At the beginning of the narrative, he prefixes a lengthy description/encomium of Thessalonike. The means of approaching the place indicate that the way the city is described by Kameniates suits a visual description. Visualizing the Late Byzantine city: A. In an icon St. Demetrios is shown astride a horse. In the background, Thessalonike is depicted from above. A fitting comment on this depiction of Thessalonike is offered by John Staurakios because he renders the admiration called forth by the large Late Byzantine capitals in connection with the abandoned countryside.

    Misunderstood and Forgotten 367 Misunderstood and Forgotten: The Greek Naval Mutiny of April 1944 Mark C. Jones Abstract After being driven from Greece by the German military in 1941, the Royal Hellenic Navy (RHN) operated alongside Britain’s Royal Navy (RN) from bases in Egypt, Lebanon, and Malta. In April 1944 the RHN experienced a widespread mutiny, which began in Alexandria, Egypt, over the political composition of the Greek government. This essay explores the importance of the Alexandria mutiny to the RHN. It investigates the role of the navy in the royalist/republican rivalry of the 1920s–1930s, the wartime return to service of republican officers, the RHN’s operations under British direction in the eastern Mediterranean, the political orientation of the government-in-exile, disturbances in the RHN prior to the mutiny, the events of the mutiny itself, the aftermath of the mutiny, how the mutiny affected the RN-RHN relationship, and the significance of the mutiny within the context of naval history in general. Wartime RN records held at the Public Record Office outside London, United States Navy intelligence reports held at the National Archives and Records Administration at College Park, Maryland, as well as unpublished and published secondary sources, provide the basis of this investigation. Multinational naval operations are a common occurrence in today’s world. While the United States Navy is presently the most powerful in the world, it frequently operates with ships from allied navies to reach its security goals. Such allied cooperation dates back to World War II when escort groups in the Battle of the Atlantic were composed of ships from the U.S., Canadian, and Royal Navies along with a handful of Polish, Free French, Norwegian, and Dutch ships.

    ARTICLE ISSN 2651 - 5210 MODULAR 2019;2(2):21-45 The Cultural Sustainability: Merzifon Anatolia College, Turkey Gizem Özerol1, Aysu Akalın2 Received: 19 November 2019 - Accepted: 17 December 2019 Abstract The article proposes an analysis of the role of American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) during the late Ottoman and the early nationalist (Republican) Turkey and focusses especially on the ABCFM organization and the role of Protestant missionaries, which they succeeded in establishing autonomous schools, hospitals, clinics, orphanages, lodgings and ateliers not only in the capitals, but also in provinces. The American Board began evangelism among Armenians, and the education and the social services became part of the Protestant movement in the Near East. Following efforts to Christianize the nations through evangelism, in the mid of 19th century, Merzifon (Marsovan) province was chosen due to its location in the middle of Anatolia and Merzifon Anatolia College was designed as an important ‘station’ in order to support the American missionary movements. Then, between the years 1886 and 1938, ABCFM built strong connections with Anatolia College in Merzifon to gain a very important strategic position. In the context of the First World War, the function of the Anatolia College buildings has changed for different aims; the military used these buildings as the Artillery Regiment. After the war the ABCFM’s network broke down but its strong contribution to present education in Turkey is inevitable. The site as a heritage is still an active part of the city’s cultural life with some existing buildings of ABCFM supporting culture and education.

Magruder, III All rights reserved Abstract Byzantine icons have attracted artists and art historians to what they saw as the flat style of large painted panels. They tend to understand this flatness as a repudiation of the Classical priority to represent Nature and an affirmation of otherworldly spirituality. However, many extant sacred portraits from the Byzantine period were executed in relief in precious materials, such as gemstones, ivory or gold. Byzantine writers describe contemporary icons as lifelike, sometimes even coming to life with divine power. The question is what Byzantine Christians hoped to represent by crafting small icons in precious materials, specifically cameos. The dissertation catalogs and analyzes Byzantine cameos from the end of Iconoclasm (843) until the fall of Constantinople (1453). They have not received comprehensive treatment before, but since they represent saints in iconic poses, they provide a good corpus of icons comparable to icons in other media. Their durability and the difficulty of reworking them also makes them a particularly faithful record of Byzantine priorities regarding the icon as a genre. In addition, the dissertation surveys theological texts that comment on or illustrate stone to understand what role the materiality of Byzantine cameos played in choosing stone relief for icons. Finally, it examines Byzantine epigrams written about or for icons to define the terms that shaped icon production.

Marketos © AHI Noon Forum September 14, 2006 Introduction Exactly eighty-four years ago yesterday (September 13, 1922), a massive fire broke out in the Armenian quarter of Smyrna (modern-day Izmir). Ever since, controversy has raged over who started the fire, whether it was an intentional act of genocide, and how many people were killed. Estimates range from one or two thousand to over 100,000. There is no dispute, however, that this was the 20th century’s first holocaust. In 1922, Smyrna was a large and important commercial port on the Asia Minor coast. Its population was about 400,000. Roughly 43% were Turkish Muslims, 45% were Greek and Armenian Christians, 6% were Jews, and 5% were foreigners. The Greek and Armenian Christians had deep roots in Smyrna going back countless generations. Many owned successful and long-established businesses. Others were professionals, artisans, or educators. They had a thriving cultural life. The Smyrna Quay Before the Fire 2 The fire raged for four days. A strong breeze drove the flames away from the Turkish quarter and toward the waterfront, and with it the city’s horrified Greeks and Armenians. The fire eventually consumed all of the city except the Turkish quarter. Smyrna Burning By late afternoon of the 13th, the fire had pinned thousands of victims on the harborside quay, where they had fled hoping to finds means of escape. On the narrow quay they found themselves trapped between the raging fire at their backs and the deep harbor in front.

It asserts that U.S. intervention in Greece was based on circumstantial evidence and the assumption of Soviet global intentions, rather than on dispatches from the field which consistently reported from 1943-1946 that the Soviets were not involved in that country’s affairs.
