  • Marianne Faithfull Biography
Marianne Faithfull’s long and distinguished career has seen her emerge as one of the most original female singersongwriters this country has produced; Utterly unsentimental yet somehow affectionate, Marianne possesses that rare ability to transform any lyric into something compelling and utterly personal; and not just on her own songs, for she has become a master of the art of finding herself in the words and music of others. Marianne Faithfull’s story, has of course, been well documented, not least in her entertaining and insightful autobiography FAITHFULL (1994). Born in Hampstead in December 1946 Faithfull’s career as the crown princess of swinging London was launched with As Tears Go By; the first song ever written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, five albums followed whilst Marianne also embarked on a parallel career as an actress, both on film in GIRL ON A MOTORCYCLE (1968) and on stage in Chekhov’s THREE SISTERS (1967) and HAMLET (1969) By the end of the Sixties personal problems halted Marianne’s career and her drug addiction took over. Faithfull emerged tentatively in the mid-Seventies with a country album called DREAMIN’ MY DREAMS (1976) but it was her furious re-surfacing on BROKEN ENGLISH in 1979 that definitively brought her back. Further new wave explorations followed with DANGEROUS ACQUAINTANCES (1981) and A CHILD’S ADVENTURE (1983). But despite her new creative vigour, Marianne was not entirely free of the chemicals that had ravaged her in the sixties. Displaying a sadness tempered by optimism, and a despair rescued by humour Marianne returned, finally clean with a collection of classic pop, blues and art songs on the critically lauded STRANGE WEATHER (1987).

  • The Player and the Playing: an Interpretive Study of Richard
DOCUMENT RESUME ED 442 143 CS 510 330 AUTHOR Henry, Mallika TITLE The Player and the Playing: AA Interpretive Study of Richard Courtney's Texts on Learning through Drama. PUB DATE 1999-00-00 NOTE 411p.; Doctoral dissertation, School of Education, New York University. PUB TYPE Dissertations/Theses Doctoral Dissertations (041) EDRS PRICE MFO1 /PC17 Plus Postage. DESCRIPTORS *Drama; *Learning Processes; Metaphors; Qualitative Research; *Scholarship ABSTRACT Using qualitative and interpretive methodologies, this dissertation analyzed Richard Courtney's writings to interpret his basic ideas on learning through drama. It focused on later writings (1989, 1990, 1995, 1997) in which Courtney distilled ideas he had been working on for as many as 30 years. It approached Courtney's texts using dramatistic metaphors which concretized his predominantly abstract writings. These metaphors focused on finding the basic elements of a drama: the setting, the act, the actor, and the Other. Through the lenses afforded by these metaphors, the thesis examined Courtney's wide-ranging, eclectic and often imprecise ideas to distill major themes. Courtney used notions like metaphor, symbol, ritual, Being, mind, perspective, oscillation and quaternity with apparently shifting definitions and loosely circumscribed meanings. It collected and analyzed Courtney's meanings recursively, both distilling Courtney's meanings and expanding them through concrete hypothetical examples. Courtney wrote about drama in abstract terms, using notions he had garnered from other disciplines to describe the process of learning through drama. The final construction that emerged in this dissertation represents the experience of the actor/learner: it is concentric, radiating from a nub which represents the feelings and imagination of the actor.

  • Press Release April 6 2012
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE For more information, contact: RKR-CB (505) 250-3105 [email protected] NEW CD “SHOTGUN” BOB ANDREWS AND SPECIAL GUESTS April 6, 2012 (New Orleans, Louisiana)--Released just in time for the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, the CD “SHOTGUN” is brand new music featuring Bob Andrews playing with some of the best musicians in New Orleans. SHOTGUN was inspired by a book by RKR- CB (also called SHOTGUN to be released April 20, 2012) which is a curious mix of images of the Marigny and Bywater neighborhoods juxtaposed with edgy graphic art and an eclectic short story. Known throughout New Orleans and the world as a keyboard player, Bob Andrews instead plays guitar on all tracks of SHOTGUN for a new sound that reflects a merging of Bob’s British rock and R&B roots with New Orleans funk and blues. The songs are fresh, edgy, and innovative. The music and the intriguing lyrics capture the energy of New Orleans with sultry and vivid flavors of lust and love in a rollicking zest for life. SHOTGUN brings together diverse and talented musicians including Alex McMurray, Johnny Sansone, Cornell Williams, Jermal Watson, Calvin Johnson, and Red Priest. SHOTGUN was recorded at Piety Street Recording by Wes Fontenot and mixed by John Porter. Development of the SHOTGUN CD was partially supported through a grant from the Threadhead Cultural Foundation. SHOTGUN is the first in a series of collaborative projects by RKR-CB to promote New Orleans musicians in tandem with a companion book. The next RKR- CB book/CD project, “INVISIBLE LOVE” will be released later in 2012.

  • 2012 Conference Abstracts (In Order of Presentation)
2012 Conference Abstracts (in order of presentation) Thursday afternoon Session 1a: Mapping Musical Modernities at the BBC (3rd Floor) Vaughan Williams, Boult and the BBC JENNY DOCTOR, SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY Much scholarly discussion in recent years has focused on re-mapping notions of biography, exploring in music not only composers, performers and librettists, but also patrons, concert organizers and programme builders. In parallel with this emerged new ideas of institutional biography, opening up questions that contextualized the institution in terms of its cultural role. With such expanded impressions of biography, identity and contribution in mind, I explore Ralph Vaughan Williams and the BBC, considering the composer’s broadcasting activities and opportunities in relation to his Corporation contacts, in particular his interactions with BBC Music Director and Chief Conductor Adrian Boult. “The Best Possible Performance”: The BBC’s 1942 Music Policy and the Problem of Swung Classics CHRISTINA BAADE, MCMASTER UNIVERSITY This paper examines the BBC’s 1942 ban on swung classics, locating it at the nexus of three strands of British cultural expression during the Second World War: 1. the vogue for Russian (and Soviet) culture; 2. the expansion of American-style popular music in Britain; and 3. the development of People’s War discourses of democracy, populism, and tolerance. This paper argues that the ban represented a direct attempt to combat the commoditization of music and to develop a more musical citizenry. The BBC’s adoption of repressive means for democratic aims demonstrated the challenges of music broadcasting in modern mass culture. “The Machine Stops” and the Musical Acousmêtre LOUIS NIEBUR, UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA, RENO In 1966, BBC Television broadcast an adaptation of E.M.
