POSTGAME NOTES Pittsburgh Pirates (78-81-1) vs. St. Louis Cardinals (84-76) Friday, September 30, 2016 R H E Starting Pitcher (Pitch Count) Pitcher of Record Pittsburgh 0 5 2 Tyler Glasnow (79 pitches/42 strikes) WIN: Carlos Martinez (16-9) St. Louis 7 7 0 Carlos Martinez (104 pitches/71 strikes) LOSS: Tyler Glasnow (0-2) SAVE: First Pitch: 7:15 p.m. Gametime Temperature: 63° – Overcast Time of Game: 2:42 Attendance: 43,070 Rain Delay: 0:47 (9:42 p.m. to 10:29 p.m.) Cardinals Notes Carlos Martinez made his 31st start of the season, fourth against the Pirates in 2016 (2-2) and ninth career against the Pirates (4- 4)…needed one double play to tie the club record of 34 by John Denny in 1978…has allowed two runs or less in 8 of his last 9 starts…14th start of 7.0 or more innings and his 4th start of the season of 7.0 scoreless innings. Yadier Molina recorded his 159th hit of the season, tying his second highest single season total (159, 2012) and two shy of his single-season best (161 in 2013). Stephen Piscotty hit his 50th career double in his 214th career game…the only Cardinals to 50 in that amount of games or less were Ducky Medwick, Terry Moore, Albert Pujols, George Watkins, Enos Slaughter, Johnny Mize and Stan Musial. Jeddy Gyorko has hit home runs in consecutive games for a team-leading 7th time this season…his 29th home run is the most by a Cardinals infielder since Albert Pujols (37, 2011) and Lance Berkman (31, 2011) each hit over 30 in 2011…the most by a non- first baseman infielder since Scott Rolen hit 34 in 2004.

No part of this book may be distributed, posted, or reproduced in any form by digital or mechanical means without prior written permission of the publisher. CHAPTER 1 Fair Ball! Why Adjustments Are Needed King Arthur’s quest for it in the Middle Ages became a large part of his legend. Monty Python and Indiana Jones launched their searches in popular 1974 and 1989 movies. The mythic quest for the Holy Grail, the name given in Western tradition to the chal- ice used by Jesus Christ at his Passover meal the night before his death, is now often a metaphor for a quintessential search. In the illustrious history of baseball, the “holy grail” is a ranking of each player’s overall value on the baseball diamond. Because player skills are multifaceted, it is not clear that such a ranking is possible. In comparing two players, you see that one hits home runs much better, whereas the other gets on base more often, is faster on the base paths, and is a better fielder. So which player should rank higher? In Baseball’s All-Time Best Hitters, I identified which players were best at getting a hit in a given at-bat, calling them the best hitters. Many reviewers either disapproved of or failed to note my definition of “best hitter.” Although frequently used in base- ball writings, the terms “good hitter” or best hitter are rarely defined. In a July 1997 Sports Illustrated article, Tom Verducci called Tony Gwynn “the best hitter since Ted Williams” while considering only batting average.

  • March 30, 1937 ''Mexico Mess'
March 30, 1937 Mexico City Mess March 30 In Mexico City, Connie Mack’s Philadelphia Athletics break their spring train- ing camp and make their way North with the usual assorted bumps and bruises and sore muscles … after a five-week stay in the capital city, team owner/manager Connie Mack refuses to say whether the team will return for next year’s spring training … Mack indicates that if the team does returns, it will at a different hotel, one in the center of the city and not in the suburbs. It is reported that not only was the food unsatisfactory for his players, but odors from the kitchen “permeated” the hotel … flies and mosquitos were a constant nuisance … in addition, a popular nightclub, separated from the hotel by a narrow road, opened at 11:00 p.m. and entertained customers with a big band orchestra until 5:30 a.m. Two of the injuries suffered in Mexico City were by attending scribes as the Philadelphia Record’s Red Smith spent a week in bed after watching an after- noon game bareheaded and Ivan Peterman of the Philadelphia Bulletin was confined to bed for three days after becoming infected from an insect bite. Meanwhile, over in the Boston Red Sox camp, 19-year-old second baseman and future Hall of famer Robert Pershing (Bobby) Doerr impresses Red Smith team brass … despite an order of “no wives Philadelphia Bulletin in camp” rookie catcher John Peacock, a 1933 graduate and three-sport star at the University of North Carolina, is accompanied by his wife and three of her girlfriends … the Fremont, North Carolina native spends his off-season driving to mule markets in Atlanta, Georgia, and East St.
