His time as a philosophy lecturer fostered his love of ideas, and in meetings or in conversation he could be distracted joyfully from administrative procedures to pursue an important philosophical point, often drawing the listener to the writings of Immanuel Kant, the German philosopher on whom he was quite an expert.

He had a passion for the Irish language, nurtured during his frequent family holidays in Kerry and visits to the Gaeltacht there, and spoke Irish with a most wonderful “blas” (accent). He was quite an expert on the life of Douglas Hyde, first President of Ireland Strawberries and another Gaelgoir, on whom Donald often lectured. Above all, he will be remembered as a kind and caring priest and & Cream bishop. His wit and disarming charm belied a pastor and churchman with a clear vision for the Church of Ireland and its place, role and potential contribution to the shaping of modern Ireland. He was Sunday 9th July never more clear or animated than when he spoke of church and at 12.00 noon society and the essential interrelationship between the two. Archbishop Caird’s funeral took place in Christ Church Cathedral on Monday 5th June followed by burial in Powerscourt Church Powerscourt Rectory graveyard. His grave is very close to that of Archbishop John Gregg former and previously Archbishop Marquee of Dublin.

We pray for his wife Nancy, and their children Anne, John and Donations in aid of Kilbride Parish Helen, and their families.’

CORPUS CHRISTI MASS The children of 6th class and 2nd class attended Corpus Christi Mass in St Mochonóg’s as a follow up to their recent Confirmation and First Holy Communion sacraments. Members of the 2nd class group opened Mass with a procession up to the altar, and they prepared the Altar for Mass. A patchwork dove made by 6th class was brought up by Caitlyn and Maria presented a Eucharistic candle as symbols of the childrens’ reflections on their sacraments.

6th class did the readings and Prayers of the Faithful were read beautifully by members of 2nd class. Offertory gifts were brought up by parents from 2nd class and the two classes sang together throughout this celebration. One of the girls from 6th class read out a Communion Reflection, before the two classes gathered on the Altar for their group photo. Father David then led the children in a ceremonial procession from the Altar.

This celebration Mass combining the First Holy Communion and the Confirmation groups is quickly becoming a beautiful tradition in our parish. Special thanks are due to Máiréad Murphy, who has worked with the two classes throughout the year and Breda Connolly who organised the refreshments in the Parish Hall afterwards. Most of all, a big thank you to the parents, and the children who came along in their outfits from their special day. St mary’s News

As Christianity gradually gained a foothold, many Pagan monuments were destroyed, but some were ‘Christianized, ‘with the addition of crosses and other symbols. Some of the best known examples of this process survive in Brittany. The cross was not adopted by the church as a symbol until the seventh century, although simple crosses are found on some earlier Christian monuments. Wheeled crosses appear on some pre-Christian stones, perhaps as symbols of solar worship. One such is Exmoor’s Culbone stone, which was Christianized by the simple expedient of extending one of the arms downwards, albeit at an angle as the arms are diagonal. The early wheeled pillar cross is most common in Ireland, Wales and Cornwall, Pictish monuments in Scotland were more likely to be large carved slabs, often with elaborate figurative carvings, depicting scenes from the bible as well as mythical beasts and warrior figures. Celtic cross design reached its culmination with the magnificent ringed High Crosses of Scotland, Ireland and Ionia many of which were carved in the 8th and 9th centuries.
