DURING THE SAKE SEASON, THE unexpectedly lengthened interval which elapsed between the issue of the preliminary circulars and tho recoipt of tho various official and non-ollicial roturns, tho apology offered for the delay that haa occurred in tho publication of "The Golfer's Year-Book." At first it was dosigned to embrace only a list of all the Clubs, their rolls of members, modal-holdors, and prize-takers, with the principal professional matches during 1800; but it WM aftorwards doeinod advisablo to extend tho plan, so as to include tho Tournamonts, the competitions for tho Challenge Bolt, and othor items of interest, of which nothing could bo gleaned oxoept from old newspapers which wore inaccessible to tlio vast majority of golfers. In tho ondoavour to attain this object every availablo souroo of information has been exhausted, both by correspondence and personal onquiry; yet tho Editor cannot vonture to congratulate himself upon having made that soction of tho book so complete as could have been desired. Painfully conscious of omissions and defects in other parts of tho work—porhaps incidental to all first attempts in producing an Annual of this character—he sends it forth in the hope that, notwithstanding its im- perfections, it may not prove uuwolcoino. To thoso gentlemen who ao kindly lent their codporation by fur- nishing the neoossary dotails in different departments, th» Editor bogs to tonder his warmest acknowledgments.

" Tli o Royal North Devon aiidWost of " is de- cidedly tlio greatest aooosaion tliat bus Loon made to tlio roll of Golf Clubs for many years. From tlio foregoing 12 dutails it will bo aeon that it oan scarcely be said to have had an infancy. Dating only from 1864 it is already nmler lioyal patronage, and is conducted with an energy and liberality which quito eclipse some of the beat and. oldest of the sister associations north of the Tweed. Tho extraordinary progress it has wade within such a brief period may bo attributed to two causes—the eligibility of tho Links, and tho indefatigable exertions of the Secre- tary. Tho Rev. J. H. Gossot, the Vicar of Northarn, -who is a most keen golfer, in conjunction with his cousin, Liout.-Oolonel Qosset, B.E., first discovered tho suitable- ness of tho Burrows for tho game, and after playing for aomo timo with thoir friends, the idea of a Club was started and favourably entertained—the preliminary de- tails mid general arrangements being loft entirely to the l.vv. J. Lymebear Harding, Littloham Rectory, Bideford, who immediately got together tho best names in the county, designed a modal, prepared badges, &c, with what result tho sequel Las shown. Of the Links thein- BOIVOB, it is enough to say that 'Coin Morris, St. Andrews, on visiting NoTtliam shortly after tho institution, of the Clnb, to lay out the course, pronounced them the finest he had over aeon. In addition to the above, there was, during the lust year, a largo number of prizes presented by individual members, amongst others, a complete edition of Shakespeare's Works, handsomely bound in three volumes, the gift of W. Gr. Pollock—won by William Anderson, jun. The competitions for the club prizes consist of two rounds of the Green—in nil 12 holes; and for all the prizes, except the Cluret Jug, the members are handicapped according to merit by the council, the longest odds allowed being 18. The annual general meeting for the election of office-bearers, &c., is held on the third Saturday of October; and the club holds stated monthly meetings on the serond Saturday of every month, when on the members pairing off, 4 balls are allowed to each couple, to be competed for. The meetings for the dispatch of business con- nected with the club are held on the Fridays previous to the above mentioned days, at 7.30 p.ta. One of the founders of the club WHS tlie late John Thomson Gordon, Sheriff of Mid-Lothian, who remained up to the time of his death a warm supporter of its interests. James Ballantine, the author of some of our most admired Scotch songs, was elected the first captain, and held office for three years. Engrossed in the minutes are several songs regarding golfing, written expressly for the Warrender Club by Mr Bnllantine. In 18G1, Mr Ballan- tine having retired, Mr David Bryce, jun., was elected captain, and held that office for two years, during which time the club prospered, Mr Bryee has done much to preserve the privi'ege of playing golf on Bruntsfleld Links, as at the time he occupied the chair of the Warrender Club, a strong pressure was brought to bear upon the Town Council of Edinburgh to. trier its suppression, by parties having houses in the neighbour- hood ol the Links, on the ground of the danger those requiring to cross the Links were supposed to be in of being struck by the balls. Mr Bryeo submitted plans, shewing that by slight devia- tions of the footpaths, all danger would bo removed; and the Town Council have to a largo extent adopted the suggestions and hail tho improvements executed. In 1863, Wm, Anderson, sen., was elected captain, and held office one year, when on retiring, Alox. Forbes was elected, and held office two years; and from 1863-6, the club increased to such an extent, thnt a check had to bo placed on tho admission of members by limiting the number on tho roll, it being found that the club-room was not sufficient to afford accommodation to more. On taking office, Capt. Forbes presented a riclilv carved presidential chair, made after a design by a member of the club. In handing over the gift, Mr Forbes stated that it was " made from oak presented to him by his friend and brother golfor, Mr John Alexander, which he preserved from the demolition of Queen Mary's Room, Anchor Close, High Street, Edinburgh. This room formed part of premises of farther historic interest, as being the meeting place of the famous Strathallan Club, and the printing office in which Burns, Scotland's immortal poet, the eccentric Lord Monboddo, Adam Kergusson, Robertson, Hume, Hales, and many other celebrities corrected their proof sheets, which have since, by moving the patriotism and exciting tho energies of Scotchmen, propelled civilization over the wide world." On the 12th May, 1866, a friendly match was played between the Wiirrendcr and Burgess Golf Clubs, over Bruntsfiold Links, 20 a-side. The following is the result:—

Recognising tlie desirability of providing some annual test to test the comparative merits of professional golferB, the Pregtwiok Club, with praiseworthy enthu- siasm and liberality, subscribed for a Challenge Belt, which should be open for competition 'to the world, and held permanently by the player who should carry it off three years in.succession. The trophy, which consists of red morocco, is an exquisite piece of workmanship, richly ornamented with massive silver plates bearing appropriate devices, and cost about thirty guineas. GRAND NATIONAL GOLF TOURNAMENT. WEDNESDAY, JULY 28, 1858. ( The tournament week was ushered in amid most i lightful weather. Golfers came rushing in from quarters, some to enter the lists as competitors for the prizes at stake, others as spectators merely. Golfers from clubs in Edinburgh, Musselburgh, Prestwick, Montrose, Aberdeen, Camcmstie, Leven, and other places whore tho game has a hold, mustered in largo numbers ; nor was our southern brethren unrepresented, for Blackheath also sent up a choice specimen of her members. At 12 o'clock the gentlemen who had resolved to broak • a lance, and to do their best to secure the first plaoe of honour, left in the following order, viz.:—(1st round) No. 1, R. Chambers, jun. and Brown Douglas ; 2, Robert Mitchell and James Balfour ; 3, Duncan and Cathcai*t ; 4, Wallace and Wolfe Murray ; 5, Hamilton and W. C. mas Moncrieffe and W. C. Thomson ; Robert Hay and Cathcart ; William Playfair and Glennie ; James Bal- four and Patrick Alexander; J. O. Fairlie and D. Wal- lace. Hugh Alexander, having come in a tie with his brother, being odd, was left to find a partner on the next day. The couples who started for the second round returned shortly after 5 o'clock, when the following beat their opponents as under :— Captain Dougall, by 6 holes, and 4 to play. Sibbald and Chambers, a tie. Sir T. Moncrieffe, 3 ... 2 ., R. Hay, 2 ... 2 .. Glennie, 1 ... 5 .. P. Alexander, C ... 4 .. D. Wallace, 1 ... 0 .. Prizes were provided for the gentlemen who camme in second and third. R. Chambers, jun., Edinburgh, made a present of a most beautiful set of clubs, the work of M'Ewan, Musselburgh, and a dozen Gourlay"s, of different weights, all enclosed in a handsome box, with silver plate, on which the name of the lucky winner should be inscribed ; and Mr Patrick, Leven, of a set of Clubs—the second winner having his choice of the two. On the second day, P. Alexander beat H. Alexander by 3 holes a-head and 2 to play. D. Wallace beat Sibbald by 3 holes. Sir Thomas Moncrieffe beat Robert Hay by 2. Captain Dougall and G. Glennie a tie. R. Chambers, jun., drew a bye. In the second round on Thursday, R. Chambers, jun. and D. Wallace came oft' all square. P. Alexander beat G. Glennie by 1 hole. • Cnpt. Dougall beat Sir Tlios. Moncrieffe by 2 holes. On Friday, of the 2288 gentlemegentlemen whwho startedstarted,, onlonly 44 remained in. P. Alexander beat Capt. Dougall at the dyke hole, scoring 34 strokes to his opponent's 44. Singularly enough, R. Chambers, jun., and D. Wallace I again halved the round, and the former drew a bye, whicivliich left him at leisure during the day. D. Wallace beat P. Alexander by 3 holes. The final tie is thus described by theFifcshirc Journal: —" Mr Chambers, Jan., against Mr Wallace. An im- mense crowd was in waiting at the Home Hole on Satur- day forenoon, to witness the game of the geutlomen above named, between whom lay the tournament. A start was effected shortly after eleven o'clock. The game out was a series of give and take. At the Return Hole we find Mr Wallace one a-head. Hole about the order of the day, with a likelihood that the match would result as before iw a tie. Great excitement on the part of the audience. At the Fourth. Hole coming home, all even is yet the state of the poll. Mr Chambers won the next, whereby be bo- came one a-head, with two to play. A mistake would now be fatal to either. On the green at the Burn Hole, at a like number, Mr Chambers fell to play the odds, and a lovely ball he played, lying ' dead' at the hole, amid the suppressed admiration of the onlookers. Wallace evi- dently did not like the nearness of his adversary's ball. He knelt to study the putt, looking at it in evory way— played at last—did not hole, but 'stimied' his adversary, it was now Mr Chambers' turn to look aghast. Hole the ball he could not, although he very skilfully lifted tho ball over his adversary's, striking the very edge of tho hole. All square once more, and a hole to play. In striking oil', from tho Burn Holo, Chambers drove wild towards the lifeboat house. ' That turns the match,1 said a keen hand, who had been round with tho combatants. Chambers, however, made a beautiful swipe, although he lay bad amongst long grass, and managed to got ou the green at the same number of strokes as his wide-awako opponent. The odds was played by Chambers, and a dexterous odd it was, considering the locality. Ho laid his ball ' dead' with his within a few inches of the hole. Wallace's ball was a few yards from the hole. If he holed, the proud position for which so many had for nearly a week been striving, would be his. A halved match at least he could again make it. But no I His ball when played lies several feet short of the littlo round holo, and wan- dered away into a leap. But of this ho failed to hole, so the match, by a single stroke, fell to his opponent. Mr R. Chambers, jun., Bruntsfield Club, Edinburgh, was there- after declared to be winner of the Tournamont." Mr Wallace got the splendid lot of clubs which had been provided for the second prize-man by the muni- ficence of his opponent, Mr Chambers ; and wo presume Mr Alexander got the set contributed by Patrick of Leven."

A Third Tournament came off at St Andrews in July, 1859, the details of which we have been unable to obtain; but after two days' competition, tho final tie for the Championship resulted in favour of Mr George Oondie, Perth, who defeated Mr Robert Hay, Edinburgh, by six holes.

BRUNTSFIELD. FIRST GRAND NATIONAL TOURNAMENT OVER BRUNTSFIELD LINKS, 20TH OCTOBER, 1859. (From the Scotsman.) The Warrender Golf Club, an association of Edinburgh gentlemen dating only two years back, have with com- mendable spirit inaugurated an annual Golf Tournament south of the Forth. In their advertisement, the gentle- men of the Warrender club throw the competition open to all non-professional players belonging to any established Golfing Association ; and, moreover, subscribed ,£30 out of their own funds towards prize money. The following were the entries and forfeits for the Tournament—in all, thirty-five. (Entry money, onee. guinea ; forfeit, one half.) EDINBURGH BUEOESS CLUB. Messrs P. Stevenson, John Anderson, James William- son, John Williamson, John Thomas, Robert B. Shaw. MANCHESTER GOLF OIUB. William Gibb, James Atherton, Malcolm Ross, James A.' Bannerman (all four forfeiting). TANTALLAN CLUB. John R. Whitecross, Robert Bertram, Robert Somer- ville. James Bayno, William Anderson, Robert Dudgeon, James Tulo, John Stewart (forfeiting), Robert Law, Alexander Ballantyne, James Bryson, Robert Kay, William Mann. BLACKHEATH CLUB. James Graham. ST. LEONAUDS (Edinburgh) CLUB. H. Harcus, S. Cameron. PBBSTONPANS GCUB. R. Tait, W. Oarse, D. M'Ouaig, — Burnet. Sheriff Gordon accepted the important office of umpire, the difficult duties of which he discharged throughout the day with the utmost acceptance to all players. The general rules of the Bruntsfield Tournament re- sembled those adopted at St. Andrews, but the mode of determining the rounds involvod a very important differ- ence. Whilst the St. Andrews Tournament has boon de- termined by holes, the Bruntsfield competition was settled by strokes, players being equalised by a handicap. The handicap was close, the strokes not being declared ; and players, although arranged and drawn in classos, did not know till the end 'of the match how they stood for the prize. This also is a new and improved feature in rules for a Golfing Tournament. The 20th October was the day appointed for the Tour- nament, and the sun by 11 o'clock, the " hour of cause," shone genially over the green ; whilst a gentle wind, with an October chill on, only braced the competitors for their work. The course, on the whole, was in good order, with, the exception of a couple of new holaa opened in the meadows, over the paling and run of trees at the bottom of the Links proper. This now ground, thrown in to enlarge the course, was very heavy ; and the thick trees, crossod and re-crossed, proved to many formidable, and to some fatal, hazards. The order of play was the reverse of the -wonted "round" over Bruntsfield, in order that strangers might cope on equal footing with players who were up to the green. Each round consisted of 7 holes, and four rounds were fixed on for the decision of the Tournament. . In order to economise details, we shall give the order of drawing the various classes, the amount of odds assigned, and the issue of each player's round in one view. (First Class, receiving no odds.) 1 Matthew Elder and D. M'Ouaig. This match was weli contested, both being good players on any green. Mr M'Ouaig, a young player, has already gained a laurel at St. Andrews against the medal-winner of Soot'scraig ; and his performance on Brimtsfield, graceful, scientific, and certain, fully justifies the favourable opinion we then expressed of this player's golfing talent. His score on the four rounds was 38, 36, 37, and 40—in all, 151. Elder scored 40, 39, 40, 42—in all, 161. 2 J B Whitecross and D. Marshall was a steady match,' especially for the latter's debut on Bruntsfield. Scores-Whiteorosa, 40, 40, 43, 41—in all, 164; Mar- shall, 38, 37, 38, 40—in all, 153. 3 Bertram and James Williamson. A beautiful series of rounds on the part of the latter. Scores—Ber- tram, 40, 40, 39, 39-in all, 160 ; Williamson, 38, 37, 37, 38—in all, 150. , , . 4 W Oarse and John Williamson. A steady match on both sides. Scores-Oarse, 38. 42, 36, 39—in all, 155 ; Williamson, 41, 37, 39, 37—in all, 154. (Second Class, receiving 12 Strokes.) 5 R Chambers, jr. (a first-class player drawn to play with the second class), and H. Harcus. The St. Andrews champion was not playing equally, com mg mat 39, 40, 39, "43—in all, 161; Harcus m 45, 43, 42, 443—173, 12 Oi\] W. Anderson and B. Dudgeon. This latter gentle- man is a promising young hand, just wanting nerve to do romisingyounghand, justwantingnervetodoexecution. His score was 38, 39, 44, 41—162, U oft; ;Anderson, 39, 41, 43, 46-169, 12 off, 157. 7. Bryson and Somerville. A good average match, both playing their game. SCORES-BRYSON, 39, 40, 39, 46—164, 12 off, 152; Somerville, 50, 46, 47, 45-188, 12off,176,8.Burnet and R. Tait. Scores-Burnet, 47, 40, 43, 63—199, 12 off, 187. 9. P. Stevenson and E,. B. Shaw. Shaw played his vei-y best game ; indeed, so well that some were disposed to think that this competitor should have been placed in the first class ; but a handicap never has, and never will, give unqualified satisfaction. Scores—Stevenson, 47, 45, 45, 43—180, 12 off, 168 ; Sliaw, 41, 43, 86; 39—159, 12 off, 147. (Third Class, receiving 20 Strokes, except where specified.) 10. John Anderson and R. Law. Scores—Anderson (receiving 15 only) 44, 46, 45, 42—177, 15 off, 162 ; Law, 45, 42, 41, 49-182, 20 off, 162. 11. B. Kay and A. Ballantyne, jr. Scores—Kay, 50, 45, 48, 49—192, 20 off, 172 ; Ballantyne, 61, 49, 43, 51— 194, 20 off, 174. 12. J. Yule and S. Cameron. This latter gentleman ("receiving 15 only) deserves our special notice for his golfing pluck and skill, having only exhibited on the scientific green for the brief space of two months. Scores —Yule, 4G, 48, 53, 44—191, 20 off, 171; Cameron, 44, 41, 44, 41—170, 15 off, 155. 13. W. Mann (Warrender) and J. Graham, the latter receiving 15 strokes only. Scores—Mann, 54, 59, 53, 48 —214, 20 off, 194; Graham, 48, 47, 44, 47—181, 15 off, 16(J. 14. J. Bayne and A. Young. Scores—Bayne, 45, 49, 43, 43-180, 20 off, 160 ; Young (receiving 15 only) 49, 42, 42, 44—177, 15 off, 162. 15. Thomas, being the last player, went off in a ficti- tious match, and ended thus—56, 49, 56, 47—208, 20 off, 188. The issue, therefore, of the Tournament was decisive for the first place, being won by R. B. Shaw at 147. This is the point which seems to us objectionable in the inclusive handicap, that the first prize should be won by the adventitious aid of odd strokes. It cannot be doubted for a moment that the most beautiful display of golf craft was shown by James Williamson and M'Ouaig, and it was felt by every golfer that the palm had passed from deserving brows. C8

For tlio second prize there was a tic—Messrs JV Williamson and Dudgeon scoring each 150. The issue pi at ifth and final round was in favour, as might have beer expected, of tlio veteran golfer—Williamson coming in at 37, a beautiful score after the toils of the day, and liis antagonist at 43—3 off, 39. The weather was beauti- ful throughout. The Lord Provost (Sir John Melville) declared on the ground the issue of the Tournament to an enthusiastic crowd ; and, in the course of his remarks, said that the Magistrates of Edinburgh desired nothing more than to sue the noble pastime of golf perpetuated and extended in their city. His Lordship and Sheriff Gordon were then appropriately thanked for their services on tlio oc- casion by the acclamation of the assemblage. The value of tlio first plate, we beliovo, will average Hoini) 25 guineas ; and the second a little more than half that amount. In tlio evening about 00 gontlemon sat down to dinner in the Masonic Hall—James Ballantyno, of tho War- ndor Club, in tho chair ; James Bayne and David Uryee acting as croupiers,

PERTH. A Golfing Tournament opened on tho North Inch horo on Tuesday, April 12th, 1804, whuu throe prizes of £1 0, .LT>, and £{i, subscribed for by the local clubs, were offered fur competition among the professional players. The weather Was tine, though", perhaps, a littlo too windy. Thirty-six holes, or three rounds of the Links, was the gauio ; and, at the close of an excellent day's sport, it was found that all tho jnizys wore "tied'1 for as follow— Tom Morris, Prostwiok, 1G8 Wm, Park, Muasolburgh, 1(58 Koburb Andruw, Perth, 170 David Park, Mussolburgh, '170 We subjoin a fow of tho other scores ; no fewer than 14 couples having engaged in tho competition— to. On Wednesday the ties were played off with, the fol- lowing result after two rounds— 1. Tom Morris. 2. Wm. Park. 3. B. Andrew. 4. David Bark. THE AMATEUR COMPETITION took place on the same day, the successful candidates for the prizes of £10, £5, and £3, being 1st, Major Boothby, 177 2d, Charles'Hunter, Prestwick, ... 179 3d, Alex. On Thursday forenoon play was resumed for prizes of £2 10s, £1 10s, and £1 given by the promoters of the Tournament among "the professionals who had been Tin- successful on the previous days. Six couples started, and, after completing two rounds, the following were declared the winners— 1. David Park, 106 2. A Strath, 108 3. W. Dow, 112 nament was held on the North Inch, under the same conditions as its predecessor above recorded, with the 70

exception of the professional prizes being thrown open to all comers. The weather was all that could be desired, and the green never was in better order. Eleven conples started, and, at the close of an excellent day's play, the scores stood as under :— Total. Bobert Andrew, Perth, 159 Andrew Strath, Prestwick, 161 W. Dow, Musselburgh, 161 R. M'Whannel, Perth, 195 It will be seen from the above that the first prize was gained by Bob Andrew in 159—being the splendid aver- age of 53 per round ; and that for the second and third 23rizes Strath and Dow tied at 161. The tie was played off m one round of 12 holes, when, after some fine play, Dow was the victor by two strokes, the numbers being— W. Dow, 54 A. Strath, 56 THE AMATEUR COMPI/TITION'. The Tournament was resumed on Wednesday forenoon, the competition being open to amateurs only. As on the first day, the round was 36 holes, and the prizes were £10, £5, and .£3. The weather was excellent in the early part of the day, but towards the close of the tour- nament a drizzling rain began to fall. Thirteen couples started, and at the close it was found that the prizes had been gained by Sergeant-Major Chalmers, Perth ; J. Or. M'Pherson, St Andrews ; and William Stewart, Perth. Total. On Thursday morning, a sweepstakes for the unsuccess- ful competitors was won by John Allan (£2 lOsj, who played one round in 53 strokes ; Bob. Kirk being second (£110s) in 58, while for the third (£1), W. Macdonald and W. Park tied at 59. In playing off, Macdonald was declared the victor by 4 strokes on 7 holes. The arrangements for the tournament were complete in every respect, and reflected- much credit on the Com- mittee, and more particularly on A. Burns Macdonald, Esq., the secretary, who exerted himself greatly to make the meeting what it turned out to be—a very decided success. 72 MONTROSE. A goodly number of the professional golfers in Scotland had a trial of skill over the Montrose Links, on Wednes- day 24th October, 1866, when the Royal Albert Club of- fered £ 10 to the player -who completed 25 holes in the fewest strokes—,£5 and £3,being awarded to the second and third successful competitors. Tho Tournament was open to all-comers. The weather was very wet, but to- wards noon—the time of starting—-it fortunately cleared up. In 'consequence of the rain the ground was rather slippery, but the competitors were unanimous in pro- nouncing the course one of the best in Scotland. If it has any fault it is that too few hazards exist. The follow- ing were the players with, their scores :— W. Doleman, Glasgow , 112 Win. Park, Musselburgh, ... 115 Robt. Park and R. Kirk respectively. Several heavy beats were lost in consequence of the turn tho play took. Strath and Anderson went out six addi- tional holes to decide their tie, when the match was once more halved, the former holing a fine put about 12 yards, and ultimately dividing with his opponent the sweep- stakes of £3. • PROFESSIONAL MATCHES.

9TH OCTOBER, 1840.—The late beat . the late Tom Alexander, Mnsselburgh, one round of the Links by 4 holes. JULY, 1843.—Allan Robertson and "Willie Dunn played a match of twenty rounds, two rounds eaeli day, for ten consecutive days. On the tenth day the veteran Allan was deolared victor by two rounds ahead, and one to play. 20xii OCTOBER, 1843 —Allan Robortaon defeated Willie Dunn in a match of 30 holes by H holes. IN OCTOBER, 1850, Allan Robertson and Tom Morris played a foursome against tho brothers Dmm for £50 a-side. The former were victorious at the burn hole. 23D OCTOBER, 1852.—A match, for £100 a-sida carao off between Mr Robert Hay, Edinburgh, and Willio Dunn, against Allan Robertson and Tom Morris, two rounds of the Links, when the latter won by 6 holes. ON 9TH MAY, 1853, the only single 2^1ayod between Allan Robertson and Tom Morris took place, when tho latter had the match by three holes. The reason is that these two gonerally played great matches on one side, and except in this ease, never had occasion to bo pitted against each other. IN OCTOBER, 1857, Allan Robertson and A. Strath gained a match from Tom Morris and David Park by 7 a- head and 5 to play. IN MAY, 1858, a very excellent match was played"be- tween the brothers Wni. and D. Park against the brothers Torn and George Morris—two rounds of the links. The latter nover were a hole ahead till tho last hole, when they gained the match therefore by one liole, after up- hill work the whole game. 74

In October, 1861, the brothers Park won a match of two rounds from A. Strath and James Anderson, club- maker, by 4 holes and 3 to play. JULY, 1862—Tom Morris and A. Strath met each other in a single for the first time, when the latter won a round by 6 holes. On the Monday following the tables were turned, Tom winning a similar inatoh at the same figure. AUGUST, 1862.—A. Strath beat Win. Dow 8 holes on a round. The ensuing week two matches between the same parties resulted in Strath'a favour by 4 holes each round. OCTOBER, 1862. Win. Park encountered A. Strath, when Strath beat him by 6 and 4 to play. Win. Dow defeated Bob An- drew by 4 holos. Win. Park and Win. Dow halved a round. Tom Morris and A. Strath played Win. Park and Wm. Dow, and won by two holes. MAT, 1864. Wm, Park defeated Wm. Dow by ono hole on two rounds. Wm. Dow boat Bob Andrew by 5 holes. Tom Morris and A. Strath were successful against David Park and Wm. Dow in a match of two rounds by 7 holes. In May, 1865, A, Strath and W. Dow tackled Tom Morris and Win. Park, when the latter were vanquished by 3 holes a-head and ono to play. [It is somewhat singular that the two professionals, between whom tlie Championship lay so long, have never boon successful when associated together in a foursome against any of thoir brethren.] OCTOBER, 1865. Bob Kirk beat Win. Dow in a match of two rounds by four holes. Bob Kirk won a match from A. Strath by two holes. The last single pitted match between Tom Moris and Wm. Park showed the best play on rocord on both aides —when Tom boat Purk by two holes, the scores being respectively 82 and 84. The money prizes offered by Sir Hope Grant were com- peted for by ten professionals. Tho winner of the first prize was A. Strath; Bob Kirk and James Anderson being tied for tho second place, On playing off, Bob won. 1866. On the 4th May an open competition for professionals •took place. The play was excellent, as the following scores testify :— 1. Tom Morris, St Andrews, ... 83 strokes. 0 A. Strath, Prestwick, ando» R7 *• Bob. Kirk, St Andrews, °' " In playing off the tie A. Strath beab Bob. Kirk, holing the round at 83 strokes. On the 5th May a very closely contested fimrsome took place, when Torn Morris and Bob. Kirk, St Andrews, boat A. Strath, Prestwick, and R. Andrew, Perth, by one holo on two rounds, or 30 holes. In October the second open competition for profes- sionals came off, when the following was the order of merit :— 1. Bob. Kirk, 80 strokes. 2. Tom Morris, 89 ,, On tho 26th October a match was played between Bob. Kirk and James Anderson, St Andrews, against W. Dow, Musselburgh, and A. Strath, Prestwick, for two rounds of the Links. At the end of the first round the former were 4 holes a-head, but during the second round their opponents managed to reduce this number gradually, until they were " all even " and one to play. After con- siderable excitement in the last hole, the St Androws men were beaten by this one hole on the nia'toh. NOVEL MATCH. match, of a somewhat novel nature, was played in May, 1866. Robert Clark, Edinburgh, and ftiiboi-t M. Innes, Edinburgh, opposed Tom Morris. Each played a ball, and the two former wore allowed at tho end of each hole to choose the ball they preferred to count against Tom's. On a first consideration this would appear quite favourable to Morris ; but no one has tho least conception of tho many difficulties and chanoes against him, unless he were himself taking part in the match. Tho game was well contested for two rounds. At the end of tlio first tho amateurs were a-liead by 3 holes ; and this would have been entirely wiped off by Tom ia the second round but for a piece of bad luck at the close, when his ball touched the hole and rolled round instead of dropping in as anti- cipated. Thus this novel match was, with all its diffi- culties, nearly halved ; the amateurs, however, favoured by fortune, winning by one hole. EXTRA SCORES MADE DURING 1866. I. PROFESSIONAL SCORES.—The lowest professional score for the year was made on the 6th of July, by Tom Mortis, when playing against Colonel Maitland Dougall of Scotscraig. It may be remarked here' that the score out is the lowest on record ; and that the total round ties with the late Allan Robertson as the champion profes- sional score of the Links. It is as follows :—Out—4 5 3 3 6 4 4 3 4—36 ; In—4 4 5 5 6 5 6 5 4—43 ; total, 79. II. AMATEUR SCORES.—The lowest amateur score for the year (and the lowest amateur score on record) was made by J. Gordon M'Pherson, A.M., when playing against Alexander Pirio, University G. 0. It was as follows :—Out—5 6 4 5 5 4 5 2 5—41 ; In—4 3 5 4 5 5 4 5 4—39 ; total, 80.

PRESTWICK. In October, 1860 (the day after the first competition for the Belt), Tom Morris challenged the Champion to a match of three rounds, or 30 holes, for £20. The Prest- vriok man took the lead vigorously, allowing Park to get only one hole in the tirst round, and winning easily by 7 a-liead and 6 to play. 3801. At the May meeting W. Park defeated Tom Morris by 4 holes out of 12, their respective scores being 53 and 57 strokes. W. Dow and Q% D. Brown were successful against David Park and R. Andrew by two holes on the round. In June a most extraordinary single cune oft' between W. Park and Tom Morris, which the former gained by one hole out of 48, although the latter was 7 ahead with 18 to play. Before the third round closed 3 of the crush- ing majority were cleverly rubbed off by Park who, how- ever, started for the final circuit of the Links 4 holes be- hind. At the seventh hole coming home, the positions of the rivals were reversed, Pai'k being now one in advance with 5 to play. And now cam,e tho tug of war. Ho halved the eighth in 4 strokes, and gained tho ninth in 5. The tenth was also halved ; and he upon whom fortune seemed to have turned her back so long was now '' dormy" —2 ahead and 2 to play. Tom took the eleventh by a fine cleek shot and a put in 2. Hopes were now enter- tained that the match would result in a triumph for neither, but Park making sure of a longishpu1 halved tho last hole in 5, othorwiso the battle would have boon drawn. In strokes, too, the winner had tho advantago, as fol- lows :— Paik. Morris. 1st Round, 5 4 56 2d ,, - 50 50 3d „ ...... 54 55 4th „ ,, 53 59

217 220 18G2. At the September meeting W. Park beat W. Dow by 4 holes out of 12 ; completing the round in 52 strokes. The following day the samo parties played a match of 24 holes, Dow getting 3 to 2 in money. Though Park was 2 ahead at the fifth hole of the second round, Dow reduced the lead gradually, and ultimately gained by 2. A purse, subscribed by the members of tho Prastwiok Club, for competition between the second and fourth plaoed aspirants to tho Challenge Belt, was competed for on Saturday, and was won by W. Park, who defeated Dow by 0 ahead and 5 to play on the three rounds. A short match of 5 holes home terminated in favour of tho latter. Another round, making the fourth that afternoon, was also gained by the "youug-'un.'' Not content with the result of the week's contest, tliesame pair had a series of matches again on the Monday, Park having the su- periority, but xaecuniarily Dow was very nearly oqual with his opponent. 78

18G3. In April, Tom Morris gained a round by one hole against W. Dow, the scores being 55 and 59 respectively. In September;* A. Strath and David Park tested their merits over neutral Links. The former got so brisk a lead that lie was 4 holes in advance of his opponent who, however, put on a spurt, collared, and passed ; but Strath cleverly recovering his lost ground, came off the victor by 2 lioles oxit of the 24, to the disappointment of those who laid C to 4 against him, 18G4. At*"the Soptember meeting an interesting single was played between W. Park and William Strath, the latter being vanquished by one hole only. W. Dow leading all through the match, defeated W. Park by a hole- on the two ruundB. 1805. In April Tom Morris gained a match against A. Strath by one bole, tho scores being 53 and 64 strokes. In September K. Andrew and W. Doloman beat Bob Kirk and Jno. Allan by one hole out of 24—the first- namod couple holing tho iirst round in 53 strokes, tho best score over made in a foursome over PreBtwiok Links by stranger^ to the green. In fact, it has only been surpassed by Colonel Fairlio and Tom Morris, who, in double matches, twice completed the 12 holes in 52. Tom Morris and Bob Kirk gained a matoh against VV. Park and A. Strath, although 0 to 4 were freely laid on the latter. W. Park, having been backed for £5 against Tom Morris, pulled off the stakes by 4 holes out of 24, his gross score being 105—a 54 and a 51; that oE his oppon- ent 108, or two Jifty-fours. 1866. In April, Tom Morris was successful against A. Strath in a match of 24 holes by 7 ahead and 0 to play. > In September W. Park beat VV. Dow a round by one hole. Tho day after tho Belt competition a foursome was ar- ranged to come oft' between the brothers Park and A. Strath and Bob Kirk; but the deluge of rain and the liigh wind prevented a start till 4 o'clock P.M. The for- M.Tin;ior-nier were the favourites, it being well known that they come put in great force when ranked on the game side, yet their younger rivals wero three ahead at tho fifth hole. The succeeding four wero, however, placed to the credit of the brothers, who stood one up at tho close of the first round. This position they maintained till tho eleventh hole of the second had been reached, where they were dormy one. Tho game wan looked upon as over from the situation of the quartette on the home green, but Kirk potted his ball from 20 yards' distance and un- expectedly halved the match. The two features of moat interest wore the luck of tho Champion in lulling the station hole in a single stroke from tho teeing-ground of the " green hollow," and the frequency with which Bob got in some unusually long puts. Seeing that tho com- petitors wero so equally balanced, their backers prevailed upon them to go out other 12 holes, notwithstanding the Btrong breeze and tho approaching darkness. In the third round Strath and his partner were less fortunate, tho brothers winning by 3 a-head and one to play,

MUSSELBURGH. In February, 1865, Win. Park challenged A. Strath, laying him £10 to £6, a match of 36 holes, which was «ained by the latter, who was 3 a-head and one to play. ° In April, 1865, Win. and David Park defeated A. Strath and W. Dow in a match of 36 holes, by 7 and 6 The samo month, David Park beat A. Strath by 5 and 4 to play out of 36 holes.

MATCHES OVER DIFFERENT LINKS. Allan Robertson played against Willio Dnnn over three different Links. At Mussolburgh the former lost by 7 holes; but at St Andrews he gained by 5, and at Dub- bioside by 6, thus winning over all by 4. In the summer of 1849, a great match for £400 a-side was played botween Allan Robertson and Tom Morris against William and James Dunn, of Musselburgh, on three Links—Musselburgh, St Andrews, and North Ber- wick. A.t Musselburgh, the Dunns won at a canter, gaining by 13 holes. At St Andrews, however, Allan and Tom. won their rounds, and had three holes in their favour. North Berwick was the deciding green, and at the commencement of the last round of all the Dunns 81

were four holes a-head and eight to play. However, Allan and Tom, by a magnificent gamo, gained the first hole, thon the second, halved the third, gained the fourth, halved tho fifth, and gained the sixth, thus mak- ing the poll all even and two to play. Tom Morris led off the nuxt hole, and it fell to Allan to play the second stroke. Tom hit a beautiful ball, but Allan's hall lay badly, and the Dunns seemed to have tho best of it; but their second ball, though well played, was not so judi- ciously directed—going off the course and under a largo boulder, which lost them the hole, though there wore some doubts as to whether the ball was really a playable one or not. This dubiety was of little consequence, as they lost the next hole, which was tho last one, and therefore Allan Robertson and Tom Morris wore declared conquerors. Tims ended one of the most interesting and keenly-contested matches of golf over played in Scot- land, which, though creditable to Allan and Tom, is no less so to tho brothers Dunn, who, throughout tho three groons, played a brilliant gamo, which it would bo diffionlt to surpass. To their indomitable pluck, perseverance, and caution in playing a losing gamo to so much effect, Allan and his partner chioily owed their victory. In Octobor, 185G, VV. Park and W. Dunn had a single over St Andrews, Musselburgh, and Prostwick, when tho former won by 12 holes on the three greens.

MORRIS v. PARK. In 1856, a great match for £100 a-side came off betweon these two distinguished golfprs, over four greens. At Musselburgh, Park won by eight holes ; at Prestwick by fivo ; while at North Berwick, Morris won by two and at St Andrews by five, althougli Park was declared the victor by eight a-head and seven to play. On tho last two rounds of this match, another ,£100 was competed for, Tom gaining by three holes and two to play. Subsequently the same singlo was renewed over four greens for £50, when Park again carried off the palm by seven holes, winning at Musselburgh and North Berwick, while Morris had tho advantage at Prostwick and St An- dvows. It is to bo regretted that repeated attempts to procure fullor details of these interesting matches have been so unsuccessful. In 1862, Park oiice more challenged his old opponent to play another match over the four greens for £100 36 holes on each links, the winner of tho greatest number of holes over all to be the victor-^and the terms having "been accepted with alacrity, arrangements were completed for commencing the contest on Friday, 21st November. Park having won the toss for choice of greens, naturally select- ed his own ground for the inauguration, of the game. At Musselbnrgh, Park gained the first round by one hole ; Morris the second by two holes ; Morris the third by two holes ; and Park the fourth round by one, thus leaving Tom the victor by two out of the thirty-six played. At Prestwick, on Tuesday the 25th, intense frost bad transformed the velvet sponginess of the turf into an un- yielding surface almost as hard as a Macadamised road, along which the bulls danced to a distance, even when driven from the wrist, that excited the surprise of the onlookers and often tho chagrin of the players. On tho putting greens the grass was so crisp as to render the short game a matter of liap-, equally defiant of judgment and ingenuity; Morris made all the running ; on the first twelve holes placing no fewer than three to his credit; and on tho second twelve he succeeded in adding the same number to the score. Six a-head at the beginning of the final round was a remarkable run of good fortune, and a very unpleasant burden for his rival to carry with com- fort. Hero, however, Park appeared in his old colours. Of the first four holes going out for the last time he won three, and reduced the lead by a half. At this stage the memory of his antecedents in similar adverse circum- stances on tho same links changed the possible into the probable, and tho knowing ones began to speculate upon the likelihood of his being able to retrieve himself by once more coming in at the death. But at the eighth the sus- pense was over, Tom being five in advance witli only four to play The next two were halved ; the eleventh fell to the lot of Morris, and the twelfth to Park, who remained 83

a winner of one hole on the third round, leaving him five behind on the day's performance. , . • At North Berwick, on Friday the 28th, the ground was covered with snow, but the umpire having -decided that the play should proceed, the following was the result:— The first round Park was two holes up ; the second Morris mis three holes up ; third round Morris five holes up,• fourth round Morris throe holes up—he being thus four holes in advance on the thirty-six. At St Andrews, on Tuesday 2d Dec, Morris gained the first round by four holes, scoring 92 strokes against Park's 86. • On the second round going out, the first hole was halved, and the second and third were won by Tom, thus finishing the match. The following is the general abstract:— Units. Mussolburgh, 2Holes . 2 Prestwick, 5 North Berwick, 4 St Andrews, 0 Majority for Morris, ... 17 According to the Scotsman, this " triumph u unparal- leled in the annals of golfing, Tom having won on all the links, and by a heavier majority than ever fell to the lot of a golfer in such a match." At the January dinner of the Prestwick St Nicholas Club, the Captain proposed the health of Tom Morris, congratulating him on his recent decisive victory over Park. In reply, Tom said " ho would profer playing Park to making a speed), for he was moro at home on the links than in addressing a public company. With reference to the late contest for ,£100, he might use the freedom to re- peat here what he had said in Edinburgh before it coin- inenoed, that, lose or win, it should be the last single lie would undertake over four greens, as the training re- quired inconvenienced him both personally and in his business. There was no disguising the fact that Williani Park was as good a golfer as ever lifted a club, and he w«s very glad that it was hia great fortune to defeat such a formidable opponent on all the four greens. Had the result been otherwise, he must have bowed to the superi- ority of hiH groat rival ; for he honestly confessed that ho had never been in finer condition or in bettor play than ho was in the reoant match, sod the pains he had taken with himself had been crowned with a auooefls greater than he expected. Ho oould not sit down -without expressing tho obligations ho was under to his frioiul, Charles Hunter, who had accompanied him throughout the game, anil given him valuable assistance and advice." Gutta-percha Balls were first introduced in 1848. Formerly the price of a ball, made of leather stuffed hard with feathers, was half-a-orown ; now, however, the high- est price is one shilling ; and, 'unlike the old "ovala," those presently in use can be easily " made up " and do double duty at a very moderate rate per dozen.

INCIDENT IN GOLFING-QUEKY. A member of the Manchester Olnb, •whom nature has blessed with luxuriant hirsute appendages, in playing a match 14th December, 18C6, struck his ball when lying against a tuft of grass. The ball rose straight up, and, without touching his dress or face, lodged firm and fast in his beard. Query—Was he bound to play it out, or could he drop it, or should he lose the hole t

"GETTING INTO A SCRAPE." This phrase, involving the use of an English word in a sense quite different from the proper one, appears to be a mystery to English lexicographers. Totld, indeed, in his additions to Johnson, points to skrap, Swedish, and quotes from Lye, " Draga en in i scrazpr—to draw any one into difficulties." But it may be asked what is the derivation of- the Swedish phrase ? It is as likely that the Swedes have adopted our phi-ase as that wo have adopted theirs. It may be suspected that the phrase is one of those which are puzzling in consoquonco of their having originated in special local circumstances, or from some remarkable occurrence. There is a game called golf, almost peculiar to Scotland, though also frequently played on Blackheath, involving the use of a small, hard, elastic ball, whioh is driven from point to point with a variety of wooden and iron clubs. In the north it ia played for tho most part upon downs (or Unfa) near tho sea, where tboro is usually abundance of rabbits. One of tho troubles of tho golf player is tho little hole which the rabbit makes in the sward, in its first efforts at a burrow; this is commonly called a rabbit?) xcrape, or simply a semjic. When tho ball gets into a Scrape, it can scarcely bo played. The rules of most golfing fraternities, accordingly, include ono indicat- ing what is allowable to the player when he get* into a taram. Here, and hero alone, as far as is known to the writer, has the phrase a direct and intelligible meaning. It soeius, therefore, allowable to surmise that this phrase has originated amongst the golfing societies of the north, and in time spread to the rest of tho public.—Tkc Buuk of Days. Edited by R. Chambers. Vol. i., p. 78.

REVISION OF THE GOLFING CODE. (To the Editor of the Golfing Year Booh.) SIR,—I would suggest that there be a few pages set apart in the Golf Annual for correspondence in referonee to the rules of tho game. A good many players, as I un- dorstand, aro of opinion that the rules need revision- There appears to be a good deal of unwritten, as well as written law ; could some of this be expressed in print it might prevent disputes. Comparisons of the laws on dif- ferent Golf Links might also bo a subject of interest, if tho differences wore drawn out and examined. Jn reference to unwritten law, I will instauco tho position of a player missing his ball in consequeneo of a bad stance, and rais- ing tbo turf in front of his ball. It is understood by regular golfers that tho raised sod must not be smoothed with tho foot or club, but young golfers, who are greatly tempted to put inequalities smooth, would be greatly in- fluenced by a downright written law. Another quostion has boen mooted by a young player in these parts. The usual rule has it. " In a three ball match, the ball in any degree interposing between the jilayer and the hole on the putting, green, must bo played out." Tho word must has a compulsory look. The practice I believe is must, if either piayof wish it. If so, would not tho rule be improved by some such addition 1 I merely give these as instances of the possibility of obtaining greater clear- ness in the rules. Probably old hands could, detect greater difficulties than these admitting of plainer defini- tion. Obediently yours, A. WEST OF ENGLAND GOLFER.

We have just seen a collection of Golfing Songs, original and selected, printed for private circulation by two en- thusiastic members of the Edinburgh Burgess Society. The volume is handsomely got up ; and when we add that it is from the press of Mr Robert Clark, himself a golfer of no mean note, any commendation of the beauty of the typography is superfluous.
