The history of carpet-making in Axminster goes back to 1755 when Thomas Whitty made carpets using the now infamous Axminster weave. 182 years later a carpet manufacturer called Harry Dutfield was on a train where he met a vicar from the West Country. The vicar informed Mr. Dutfield that carpets hadn’t been made in Axminster for some time, due to a disastrous fire that had destroyed the factory. It was there, that an idea was formed and in 1937 a decision was made to re-launch carpet manufacturing in the town. This was the start of Axminster Carpets from Axminster. Each carpet is individually made in Britain using British Wool, traditional methods and individually inspected.

CASE STUDY 1: BRASSERIE BLANC BOURNEMOUTH
The Brasserie Blanc, located at the front of Bournemouth’s prestigious Highcliffe Marriot Hotel has received the royal treatment from luxury British brand Axminster Carpets. Awarded the Royal Warrant in 2012, the carpet manufacturer collaborated with PNW, Twickenham to develop a custom woven carpet that seamlessly, slipped into the Art Deco surroundings. The atmosphere of Brasserie Blanc is what sets the restaurant apart from other eateries in the area. The venue successfully respects the signature look of the group with its mural wallpaper and deep-buttoned sofas, in order to achieve a modern, yet casual décor. Axminster Carpets was tasked with creating a contemporary twist on a classic, which would respect the history and characteristics of the location. The engaging, monochrome carpet stripes echo the vibrant atmosphere and set the mood for a comfortable spot to stay and linger.

CASE STUDY 2: BELMOND BRITISH PULLMAN
Axminster Carpets were proud to have been involved in the recent renovation of the Belmond British Pullman, a luxury train operating around the British countryside. Bringing new meaning to the notion of ‘journey’, the Belmond British Pullman invites each passenger to travel back to the roaring 20s - the Golden Age of railway transport. From the mahogany furnishings and marquetry to the polished brass and hand-stitched upholstery, every aspect of the interior has been carefully crafted and considered, perpetuating the work of British craftsmen and artisanal suppliers such as Axminster Carpets. Drawing on expert insight in the transport industry and esteemed hospitality experience, Axminster Carpets worked closely with JPA Design to develop a bespoke carpet for the renowned Phoenix carriage.

Axminster Carpets™ has replaced the Drawing Room carpet at Englefield House with a stitch-by-stitch reproduction of the original design. Recreating the delicately patterned carpet involved a 2 month design process, led by Design Director Gary Bridge. Relying on traditional craftsmanship to complete the one-of-a kind installation, the design journey began with a hand drawn sketch of the threadbare Drawing Room carpet. “Before computers, many carpets were hand knotted and we’re passionate about the design discrepancies that come with the free-style of being handmade” Although today’s carpet making techniques are more advanced, the pencil illustration was translated to the computer by hand to retain the origin of the hand-knotted carpet. Before weaving commenced at the factory in Axminster, the carpet was sampled for accurate colours, finishes and weave. Our vision is to be 100% sympathetic to the original design.
