Experiential Marketing and Cultural Routes The Case Study of the Routes of the Olive Tree Experiential Marketing and Cultural Routes The Case Study of the Routes of the Olive Tree Eugenio Conti Ioanna Pechlivanidou Master of Arts in Tourism Master Thesis Supervisor: Jenny Hviid Holm July 2016 Page 1 | 169 AKNOWLEDGEMENTS First and foremost, we would like to express our gratitude to Jenny Holm Hviid, who has been there as our supervisor throughout the course of our Master in Tourism. She has been guiding us both during our two semester projects in Aalborg University and our final master thesis and has been always assisting with her constructive critique. Thank you for your encouragement, support and patience. We would also like to thank the personnel of the Routes of the Olive Tree, who welcomed us so warmly, trusted us and helped us conduct this research. Without their cooperation, this work would not have been the same. Page 2 | 169 Abstract Given the increasing attention put on the experience economy and the market of experiences, on one hand, and on cultural routes as an emerging, alternative form of tourism, on the other, in this master thesis researchers set out to explore the use that a cultural route makes of experiences to market and differentiate itself, and what related challenges and issues can be identified. As the researchers were particularly interested in generating in-depth data, a single case study was chosen, with the case being one of the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe, the Routes of the Olive Tree. Theoretical propositions were developed in order to guide the analysis, in advance, on the basis of some of the most discussed concepts in experiential marketing for tourism, such as experiential realms, theming, representation and conveyance of the experience, staging of the experience and experiential marketing tools.

This stunning yet little explored peninsula in south-west Greece was the playground of ancient gods and the inspiration for Homer's epic Iliad. It is here where the Olympic Games were founded and the legendary wars of Sparta were fought. Dotted with ancient ruins, and clifftop castles, the region also boasts picturesque guesthouses on some of the Mediterranean's most beautiful beaches. This trip aims to reveal Peloponnese’s gems. It starts from Athens, heading towards two of the most interesting archaeological sites in Greece, Mycenae and Epidaurus. We spend the night at Nafplio, once a capital of the newly-liberated Greece, graced with attractive narrow streets and elegant Venetian architecture. Later, continue in the direction of Monemvasia, the Greek equivalent to France’s Mont Saint- Michel, and on the way we will have a look at the past, in the ruins of the Byzantine city of Mystras. In the days that follow,we explore the wild and barren landscape of Mani, before ending up in Kardamyli and hike around the place where the British author Patrick Leigh Fermor chose to spend a great part of his life. Between 1933 and 1935 he travelled, largely on foot, from Rotterdam to Istanbul, then onwards to Mount Athos in Greece. Much later in life, he wrote two of his most celebrated books, „A Time of Gifts‟ (1977) and „Between the Woods and the Water‟ (1986), about part of this journey. A third posthumous volume, „The Broken Road‟ (2013), edited by Colin Thubron and Artemis Cooper, was based on „The Green Diary‟ (his only surviving diary from the journey) and a draft from the 1960s entitled „A Youthful Journey‟. He met the Romanian princess Balasha Cantacuzène in Athens in 1935, and the two lived together at Lemonodassos, Greece, and then at the Cantacuzène estate in Băleni, Romania, until the outbreak of war in 1939. Working as a Special Operations Executive officer behind enemy lines in Crete during World War II, he led the party that kidnapped the German General Heinrich Kreipe. The story of the abduction was later adapted into a film, „Ill Met by Moonlight‟ (1957), based on the 1950 book of the same name by Leigh Fermor‟s second in command, William Stanley Moss.

Botanizing Greece October 28 – November 8, 2019 $2,940 double occupancy or $3,640 single occupancy Summary The first rains of fall bring a “second spring” to Greece, when bulbs that have been baking in the hot summer sun come to life. Join our guide, Lefteris Dariotis, as we travel around the country to find as many Crocus, Cyclamen, Colchicum species and other fall-blooming plants as possible! During our 12-day tour we´ll travel through oak forests carpeted by Cyclamen hederifolium in the north to the rugged coastlines, limestone mountains, and ancient olive groves of the Peloponnese where Crocus goulimyi and Crocus boryi line the scenic roads. We´ll visit the Crocus sativus fields of Kozani (where some of the world’s best saffron is produced), climb up to the ‘elevated’ monasteries of Meteora, explore botanical highlights of areas around Athens (including Lefteris’ personal gardens), drive through medieval villages in Mani and Messinia, and enjoy some of the best culinary and visual highlights that Greece has to offer. Day 1 Arrive in Athens. We’ll have the time to meet each other and enjoy some local wine at our welcome dinner in a traditional ‘taverna’. Day 2 We’ll start our day early to travel north. We´ll stop to pay tribute at Thermopylae, where Leonidas and his Spartan soldiers gave their final battle, and then climb the foothills of Mount Oeta and Kallidromo to search for sternbergias and colchicums as we drive through shrublands dotted by the yellow and orange shades of smoketrees (Cotinus coggygria) and purple heathers (Erica manipuliflora) and wind through extensive Greek fir (Abies cephalonica) forests.
