Tucker, '03 Summer 2004 Biography [Taken from the Stephen Warner Online Exhibit (2004-2018) at http://www.gettysburg.edu/special_collections/exhibits/warner/intro.dot] Stephen Warner attended Gettysburg College from 1964-1968, a relatively quiet period in the college's history. According to a sampling of the Gettysburgian from the 1964-1965 academic year, the student newspaper did occasionally mention United States involvement in southeast Asia. However, there were no indications of widespread student concern about this matter at that time. As a major in History, Steve Warner came to focus his interests on civil rights and social justice. His academic advisor, Roger Stemen, emeritus professor of History, described Warner as having been "radically intellectual, a non-collegiate type interested in the arts, history, and economics." Stephen Warner was perceived by those who knew him to be open-minded and considerate of others, but intense about those social and ethical matters that concerned him most. He was on the staff of the Gettysburgian and eventually became a Feature Editor. He was instrumental in establishing new campus organizations, including a human relations forum and the Ad Hoc Committee Against the Vietnam War. During his senior year he was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society. He also was accepted to the Yale University Law School. -

Streszczenie: Niniejszy esej jest próbą syntetycznego, poniekąd psychoanalitycznego, ujęcia biografii Johna Lennona, zarówno jako ewidentnie zagubionego geniu- sza muzyki popularnej, jak i ofiary chłopięcego kompleksu zaniedbania przez uwielbianą matkę – później wysublimowanego w kompleks kobiecej dominacji i przeniesionego na Yoko Ono, jego drugą żonę i awangardową „muzę.” W re- zultacie ich związek, w znacznym stopniu wyidealizowany przez media, został ukazany w kontekście relacji Lennona z innymi kobietami (na przykład z ciotką Mimi), sprzecznych cech jego osobowości oraz ewolucji światopoglądowej i ar- tystycznej, która doprowadziła najpierw do dramatycznego rozdarcia między popowym supergwiazdorstwem a awangardowym artystostwem, ostatecznie zaś – do faktycznej niemocy twórczej w ciągu ostatnich pięciu lat życia. Słowa kluczowe: kompleks, trauma, dominacja, „krzyk pierwotny”, gwiaz- dorstwo, artyzm, niespełnienie Summary: In this essay, the author attempts at a synthetic insight into the biography of John Lennon, both as a confused genius of popular music and a victim of the childhood complex of motherly neglect: later transformed into the one of female domination and transferred onto Yoko Ono, his second wife and avant-garde “muse.” Consequently, their marriage, largely idealized by media, is shown here in the context of Lennon’s relations with other women (mainly his mother and aunt Mimi), his contradictory psychological traits and artistic/ ideological evolution that resulted in being torn between pop superstardom, avant-garde artistry and, in last five years, virtual creative impotence. -

Antonio wants to understand the lyric to the newly released Norwegian Wood. Review: Philippa Hawker Spanish filmmaker David Trueba came across the subject matter for his new film quite by accident. It wasn't just the tale of John Lennon's 1966 Spanish sojourn that intrigued him. It was the account of a teacher of English with a Beatles obsession who was determined to meet Lennon and ask him about his lyrics – lyrics that he used as a teaching aid in the classroom. Trueba read about this man in 2006, when the town of Almeria was celebrating the 40th anniversary of Lennon's presence; he had come there to take an acting role in a satirical comedy with director Richard Lester called How I Won The War. The other significant element in the project was a personal one. The novelist and filmmaker is the youngest of eight brothers; at the time Lennon was in Spain, Trueba's second brother was locked in a struggle with his father about the length of his hair. "He was trying to get his hair long, because he was a crazy fan of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. And my father was a typical Spanish father of the time of Franco, very authoritarian. So he told him to cut his hair. -

DESCRIPTORS *Academic Achievement; Cultural Context; *Educational Attitudes; Elementary Education; Ethnography; *Literacy; *Low Income; Reading Attitudes; Social Influences; *Socioeconomic Status IDENTIFIERS *Literacy as a Social Process; *New York (Upstate) ABSTRACT An ethnographic study examined and compared schooled and non-schooled uses of literacy and literature in a small, rural, all white, Adirondack Mountain community in upstate New York to explicate the way in which low social class and economic status constrain school achievement. More than 75 interviews were conducted over a 3-year period with students, teachers, school administrators, former students, parents, community members, and local employers. Observations were also conducted at graduations, holiday celebrations, faculty meetings, and the non-school classroom of hunters' safety training and snowmobile safety training. Results indicated that most of the families in the town are literate and are often involved with literacy during the course of their daily lives. Literacy is seen to exist within a social and cultural context, and its definitions are varied and changeable. People in the town understand what is required for academic achievement, but often choose not to pursue it. In both school and non-school settings, literacy is used for particular purposes, and there are specific demands placed by the community upon its members regarding specific texts. -
