  • The Sovereignty of the Crown Dependencies and the British Overseas Territories in the Brexit Era
Island Studies Journal, 15(1), 2020, 151-168 The sovereignty of the Crown Dependencies and the British Overseas Territories in the Brexit era Maria Mut Bosque School of Law, Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, Spain MINECO DER 2017-86138, Ministry of Economic Affairs & Digital Transformation, Spain Institute of Commonwealth Studies, University of London, UK [email protected] (corresponding author) Abstract: This paper focuses on an analysis of the sovereignty of two territorial entities that have unique relations with the United Kingdom: the Crown Dependencies and the British Overseas Territories (BOTs). Each of these entities includes very different territories, with different legal statuses and varying forms of self-administration and constitutional linkages with the UK. However, they also share similarities and challenges that enable an analysis of these territories as a complete set. The incomplete sovereignty of the Crown Dependencies and BOTs has entailed that all these territories (except Gibraltar) have not been allowed to participate in the 2016 Brexit referendum or in the withdrawal negotiations with the EU. Moreover, it is reasonable to assume that Brexit is not an exceptional situation. In the future there will be more and more relevant international issues for these territories which will remain outside of their direct control, but will have a direct impact on them. Thus, if no adjustments are made to their statuses, these territories will have to keep trusting that the UK will be able to represent their interests at the same level as its own interests. Keywords: Brexit, British Overseas Territories (BOTs), constitutional status, Crown Dependencies, sovereignty https://doi.org/10.24043/isj.114 • Received June 2019, accepted March 2020 © 2020—Institute of Island Studies, University of Prince Edward Island, Canada.

  • Lithics, Landscape and People: Life Beyond the Monuments in Prehistoric Guernsey
UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON FACULTY OF HUMANITIES Department of Archaeology Lithics, Landscape and People: Life Beyond the Monuments in Prehistoric Guernsey by Donovan William Hawley Thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy April 2017 UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON ABSTRACT FACULTY OF HUMANITIES Archaeology Thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Lithics, Landscape and People: Life Beyond the Monuments in Prehistoric Guernsey Donovan William Hawley Although prehistoric megalithic monuments dominate the landscape of Guernsey, these have yielded little information concerning the Mesolithic, Neolithic and Early Bronze Age communities who inhabited the island in a broader landscape and maritime context. For this thesis it was therefore considered timely to explore the alternative material culture resource of worked flint and stone archived in the Guernsey museum. Largely ignored in previous archaeological narratives on the island or considered as unreliable data, the argument made in this thesis is for lithics being an ideal resource that, when correctly interrogated, can inform us of past people’s actions in the landscape. In order to maximise the amount of obtainable data, the lithics were subjected to a wide ranging multi-method approach encompassing all stages of the châine opératoire from material acquisition to discard, along with a consideration of the landscape context from which the material was recovered. The methodology also incorporated the extensive corpus of lithic knowledge that has been built up on the adjacent French mainland, a resource largely passed over in previous Channel Island research. By employing this approach, previously unknown patterns of human occupation and activity on the island, and the extent and temporality of maritime connectivity between Guernsey and mainland areas has been revealed.

In 1814 it remained largely French-speaking, though it had been politically British for 600 years. The island's only town, St Peter Port (which in 1814 accommodated over half the population) had during the previous century developed a thriving commercial sector with strong links to England, whose cultural influence it began to absorb. The rural hinterland was, by contrast, characterised by a traditional autarkic regime more redolent of pre industrial France. By 1914, the population had doubled, but St Peter Port's share had fallen to 43 percent.

  • Report on Rare Birds in Guernsey in 2015 the Islands of Guernsey, Herm, Jethou, Lihou and Associated Islets
Report on rare birds in Guernsey in 2015 The islands of Guernsey, Herm, Jethou, Lihou and associated islets Mark Lawlor and the Bailiwick of Guernsey Rarities Committee The following records have been submitted to, assessed by and accepted by the Bailiwick of Guernsey Rarities Committee (BGRC) which is organised through the Ornithological Section of La Société Guernesiaise. The members of the committee for 2015 (M.P.Lawlor, W.R.Turner, K.Childs, J.P.Down, J.Hooper) would like to thank all the observers and photographers who sent in details of their rarity observations. The systematic list is based on the BOU British List. Although the BGRC’s area covers the whole of the Bailiwick, this report focuses on the rare bird sightings from Guernsey. However, the accepted records from Alderney and Sark are also included for completeness and interest. For each record, the following information is given where available; number of birds, age and sex if known, date and location of first sighting, further locations, whether it was trapped or photo- graphed, the names of the finder(s), and whether it was seen by anyone else (et al.). For each species, it states how many previous records there have been (if known) and there is a comment on the birds natural range and migrations. There are also the editor’s comments and analysis of sightings in Guernsey. • Jersey Location Geography Climate
Jersey Location The Bailiwick of Jersey is located in Europe and has a total area of 45 square miles. Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands, which are located in the English Channel, off the coast of Normandy, France, and include Guernsey, Alderney, Sark, Herm, and Jethou. Jersey is 9 miles long and 5 miles wide. The island is 14 miles north of France and 100 miles south of Great Britain. It is bordered on the north by the English Channel and on the south by the Bay of Mont St Michel. Its political boundaries also include the reefs of Minquiers and the Ecrehous. (Jones) Geography The geography of the island is mainly gentle and rolling, with rougher hills along the northern coast with the English Channel. The highest point is 143 meters, while sea level is the island’s lowest point. The island’s location in between the Bay of Mont St Michel and the English Channel gives the island tidal ranges of over 40 feet, among the largest range in the world. Most of the island is a plateau which sweeps towards sea level as one travels south. The west end of the island features St Ouen’s Pond, which is Jersey’s largest fresh water source. The interior of the island is home to pastoral grazing lands and home to most of Jersey’s agriculture. Climate Jersey’s climate is quite temperate, due to its location in the English Channel. The island is the sunniest place in the British Isles with an average of over 1,951 hours per year.
