Brand Development Brand Development in the Canadian Cast in the Canadian Cast Iron Stove Industry in the First Half of the Iron Stove Industry 20th Century 288 Lisa Baillargeon ESG, Université du Québec à Montréal, Montréal, Québec, Canada, and Patrice Gélinas York University, Toronto, Ontario, Canada Introduction From the turn of the 20th century and up to the 1950s, many manufacturers operated in Canada during what has been labeled as the “glorious and golden age” of cast iron stove manufacturing (Laberge, 1980). Famous brand names remain in collective memory to this day, including Bélanger, McClary, P.T. Légaré, Moffat, and l’Islet. This paper studies brand development in the Canadian cast iron stove industry over this period to fill a void in the Canadian literature and to add to the very few U.S. papers that comprise the North-American literature. Several clues point to the existence of deliberate branding activity at the largest Canadian foundries beyond efforts to differentiate stove types, models, sizes, names and designs. Canadian stove branding would have followed in the 19th century’s footsteps of the largest U.S. manufacturers who managed “to sell customers a full line of stoves covered by a unifying brand name that conveyed a promise of common quality” (Harris, 2008, p.720). This paper is the first to explore cast iron stove brand development in Canada. Literature and Research Hypotheses Few papers exist on cast iron stove brand development and the thin literature covers mainly the U.S. market over the 1815-1875 period (Harris, 2008). Branding development has been investigated in several other historical contexts at the firm level, including Colgate (Foster, 1975), Quaker (Thornton, 1933), Proctor & Gamble (Petty, 1985), General Mills (Gray, 1954), or Listerine (Lambert, 1927) and at the macro level in whole industries like firearms (Witkowski, 2010), brewing (Tremblay and Tremblay, 2005) or automobile (Rao, 2006).

  • Inglis P35 Pistol
Inglis P35 Pistol High-Power pistols were also produced in Canada for Allied use, by John Inglis and Company in Toronto. The plans were sent from the FN factory to the UK when it became clear the Belgian plant would fall into German hands, enabling the Inglis factory to be tooled up for Hi-Power production for Allied use. Inglis produced two versions of the Hi-Power, one with an adjustable rear sight and detachable shoulder stock (primarily for a Nationalist Chinese contract) and one with a fixed rear sight. Production began in late 1944 and they were on issue by the March 1945 Operation Varsity airborne crossing of the Rhine into Germany. The pistol was popular with the British airborne forces as well as covert operations and commando groups such as the Special Operations Executive (SOE), the U.S. Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and the British Special Air Service (SAS) Regiment. Inglis High-Powers made for Commonwealth forces have the British designation 'Mk 1', or 'Mk 1*' and the manufacturer's details on the left of the slide. They were known in British and Commonwealth service as the 'Pistol No 2 Mk 1', or 'Pistol No 2 Mk 1*' where applicable. Serial numbers were 6 characters, the second being the letter 'T', e.g. 1T2345. Serial numbers on pistols for the Chinese contract instead used the letters 'CH', but otherwise followed the same format. When the Chinese contract was cancelled, all undelivered Chinese-style pistols were accepted by the Canadian military with designations of 'Pistol No 1 Mk 1' and 'Pistol No 1 Mk 1*' In April of 1943, China requested 180,000 Hi-Powers with wooden shoulder stocks/holsters through the Mutual Aid Plan with Canada.

Office: 1183 King Street West, Suite 200 Toronto, ON, M6K 2C5 [email protected] 416.304.0222 thebentway.ca For Immediate Release: August 29, 2018 • Please include in your listings/announcements THE BENTWAY presents WATERLICHT A Site-Wide Large-Scale Light Installation by Acclaimed Dutch Artist and Innovator Daan Roosegaarde October 12-14, 2018 Plus “If, But, What If?” the Fall Art Exhibition at The Bentway The Bentway is very pleased to present its first site-wide artistic endeavour, the monumental public art intervention WATERLICHT, designed by acclaimed Dutch artist Daan Roosegaarde. This large-scale light installation illustrates the universal power, poetry, and danger of water and will have its Canadian public premiere in Toronto from Friday October 12 to Sunday October 14, 2018. WATERLICHT is a dream landscape created through the imaginative use of LEDs, special software, and lenses. Larger-than- life, cascading waves of blue light will soar underneath the Gardiner Expressway, simulating a virtual flood and calling attention to rising water levels along Toronto’s shoreline. Originally, WATERLICHT was created for the Dutch District Water Board. As a travelling exhibition, site- responsive versions have been staged in Amsterdam’s Museumplein, London’s Granary Square, and Paris’ Parc Clichy-Batignolle. The work will have its Canadian premiere at The Bentway and will embrace the unique physical features of the site while acknowledging its past as the original shoreline of Lake Ontario. To foster a city-wide conversation about the importance of clean water, the environment, and climate change, The Bentway is working with numerous partners. This additional programming includes: a panel discussion with the Art Gallery of Ontario; a youth ambassador program with Ryerson University’s School of Professional Communication and Ryerson University’s Urban Water Centre, and Waterlution; and a two-part educational workshop with the Ontario Climate Consortium and OCAD University.
