Paul Parecattil It gives me immense joy and happiness to pen a few lines for the Bi-monthly magazine. The Corona Virus has taken a toll on our day-to-day ac� vi� es; masks and sani� zers have become part and parcel of our daily life but has taught us several lessons for the future like how to make use of technology in educa� on for one. Online classes were not a system we followed un� l last year, but we have adapted to it within a brief span of � me. No doubt, it was a tes� ng � me for parents, teachers and students alike, but since then we have adapted to the new norm and are very comfortable with it. Soon the new educa� on policy will be introduced in schools, whereby technology will play a major role. It should not surprise you that in future Covid Week will be celebrated in school and teachers will be asked to conduct online classes from home. Un� l last year, it was thought that the use of technology will spoil children, but instead, they have become more techno-savvy within in a brief � me. Although we are in the grip of a Pandemic, we need to carry on with our normal ac� vi� es and overcome the challenge by engaging ourselves construc� vely keeping the parameters advised by the government and health authori� es. I thank you for your enthusiasm and wholehearted support in keeping it going by wri� ng useful ar� cles amid your busy schedule of studies and examina� ons. Independence Day celebra� on which we conducted online was a visual treat for everyone and brought alive the Patrio� c spirit in every Patrician. Dear students, I am thrilled to inform you that all the classrooms and the school as a whole is all ready to welcome you back when things improve; even the playfi eld has taken on a green cover to welcome you with joy and happiness. Online Class During this pandemic - Covid -19 - we, at St. Patrick’s academy, Bengaluru, con� nued our mission of educa� on through online medium for the academic year 20-21. The management took the challenge of ge� ng all the teachers trained in � me and began our online class as per the guidelines from the Council and Govt of Karnataka. The students are well prepared and enthused with the idea of online classes. A special word must be said about the students in the kindergarten and Primary; their enthusiasm and eagerness in interac� ng with the teachers is encouraging and infec� ous. The senior students are being instructed in the virtual classroom from the month of April onwards. Independence Day Celebration - 15 August 2020 St. Patrick’s academy, Bengaluru celebrated 74th Independence Day on 15th August 2020 by observing all the Covid protocols. Rev. Bro. George Xavier, Deputy congrega� onal leader of the Brothers of St. Patrick, hoisted the Indian na� onal fl ag and there was an inspiring speech by the Manager, Rev.Bro. Christopher Dawes. Brothers from the Novi� ate community, NCC cadets and teaching & non-teaching staff were present at the school to commemorate the special day Our Principal, Rev. Bro. Paul P. and the management team addressed the students and teachers through online medium by delivering recorded message of the day and enlightened the young minds. The students wrote ar� cles, poems and speeches for Independence Day and honoured the freedom fi ghters. They also exhibited their talents by sharing recorded videos and audios. Thomas - XII A freedom fi ghter is a person who thinks that his native people are not free, and works to have freedom for all. Most oft en this means that a freedom fi ghter wants his people to have their own nation and freedom by getting rid of the oppressors. Freedom fi ghters were those great leaders who sacrifi ced their lives with fearless courage to bring freedom to the nation. Th ey faced pains, exploitation, immense torture and hardships to bring freedom. People look up to them in terms of patriotism and love for one’s country. Th ey are considered the epitome of patriotism. Some popular freedom fi ghters are: Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Bhagat Singh to name a few. Freedom fi ghters in India have launched many movements in order to remove British presence among which many were very huge success. Gandhi, who is known as the Father of the Nation believed in non-violence and truthfulness.

The total membership of the Constituent Assembly was 389. While we all remember Dr. B R Ambedkar as the Father of the Constitution and other pioneering male members who helped draft the Indian Constitution, the contribution of the fifteen female members of the Constituent Assembly is easily forgotten. On this Republic Day, let’s take a look at the powerful women who helped draft our Constitution. 1. Ammu Swaminathan Image Credit: The Indian Express Ammu Swaminathan was born into an upper caste Hindu family in Anakkara of Palghat district, Kerala. She formed the Women’s India Association in 1917 in Madras, along with Annie Besant, Margaret Cousins, Malathi Patwardhan, Mrs Dadabhoy and Mrs Ambujammal. She became a part of the Constituent Assembly from the Madras Constituency in 1946. In a speech during the discussion on the motion by Dr B R Ambedkar to pass the draft Constitution on November 24, 1949, an optimistic and confident Ammu said, “People outside have been saying that India did not give equal rights to her women. Now we can say that when the Indian people themselves framed their Constitution they have given rights to women equal with every other citizen of the country.” She was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1952 and Rajya Sabha in 1954.

    ARCHIVE: BIOGRAPHICAL ESSAYS WOMEN POLITICIANS OF CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY AMMU SWAMINATHAN (1894-1978) EARLY LIFE: Ammukutty, as she, Ammu Swaminathan, was fondly called, was born in the Anakkara Vadakkath family to Govinda Menon and Anakkara Vadakath Ammuamman, in Palghat (Palakkad) district of Kerala in 1894. Her father was a minor local official earning what was only sufficient for a hand to mouth existence for her whole family. Both of Ammu's parents belonged to the Nair caste, and Ammu was the youngest of their numerous children. However, despite their family’s financial struggles, Govinda Menon and Anakkara focussed on getting all their children educated, including their daughters. Hence, Ammu was not deprived of her right to study, though she received an informal education at home. However, things started worsening when Ammu lost her father, the only breadwinner of their large household, at a very young age. She saw her mother struggling to run their expenses. Consequently, Ammu could not receive the quality education which she was entitled to, for some time. Nevertheless, Ammu was a spirited girl. At the age of 13 when faced with the prospect of marriage, she laid down her own conditions before agreeing to it. Her husband, Subbarama Swaminathan was a close associate of her father P. Govinda Menon and had expressed his desire to marry one of his daughters upon completion of his higher education in England. By that time, Menon had passed away and all his daughters except for the 13-year-old Ammu were married. So, when Swaminathan, a man twenty years her senior, proposed marriage to the young Ammu, he was confronted with a strange situation.

She is remembered as Captain Lakshmi in reference to the rank she held in the INA This article will give details about Captain Lakshmi Sehgal within the context of the IAS Exam The early life of Lakshmi Sehgal Lakshmi Sehgal was born as Lakshmi Swaminathan in the Pattambi district of Kerala on 24 October 1914. She as the daughter of S. Swaminathan, a lawyer and A.V. Ammukutty, also known as Ammu Swaminathan, a social worker and Indian Independence activist. Lakshmi studied at Queen Mary’s College and received her MBBS degree from Madras Christian college in 1938. For a time she worked as a doctor in the Government Kasturba Gandhi hospital at Chennai. When he left for Singapore in 1940 she came in contact with some members of the Subash Chandra Bose’s Azad Hind Fauz Lakshmi Sehgal’s role in the Indian Army When Singapore fell to the Imperial Japanese Army in 1942, Dr Lakshmi was aiding wounded prisoners of war many of whom were interested in forming and Indian independence army. Using the backdrop of World War II they could enlist Japanese support in overthrowing British colonial rule in India. A Council of Action was formed in this regard consisting of Indian nationalists were formed but no approvals were given from the Japanese forces were forthcoming Things changed when Subahs Chandra Bose arrived in Singapore on July 2 1943. Lakshmi came to know that Bose was intending to draft women into the Azad Hind Fauz and requested a meeting with him.
