It was only a matter of time before he realized he needed to take charge and step out from behind the kit to front the band himself. One year and a couple of member changes later Godsmack was born. Sully Erna, Robbie Merrill and Tony Rombola hit the studio and recorded their first CD titled All Wound Up. They did this over one weekend for a measly twenty six-hundred dollars. Over the next two years, the band played throughout the Boston scene with drummer Joe Darco and began earning a strong reputation of being a great band. The noise they were making in the New England area created a snowball effect like no other. Godsmack began drawing in bigger and bigger audiences to their live shows. Their CD began circulating through the streets of Boston and eventually landed in the hands of a DJ for WAAF, a Boston radio station. WAAF put "Keep Away" into heavy rotation and it quickly soared to the #1 spot at the station. Newbury Comics, a New England record store chain, agreed to sell the CD on consignment and the grind continued. Shortly after the success of "Keep Away" Godsmack went back into the studio and recorded a single titled "Whatever", which became the new local favorite on WAAF. It took off in the blink of an eye and the race was on. As a result of the single doing so well, Godsmack's CD began selling hundreds of copies per week, and soon escalated to more than one thousand copies per week, becoming the second best selling CD in that chain of stores. Godsmack's live shows began selling out throughout New England, which in return created more requests for their music on the local radio stations and more CD sales. On and on it went until the summer of 1998 when Republic/Universal stepped up and signed the band to their label. Godsmack Band. Godsmack BandJoe Darco was soon replaced by , All Wound Up was re-mastered and the artwork was changed. The finished self-titled debut CD Godsmack hit the shelves six weeks later. Godsmack hit the road on their first headlining tour, The Voodoo Tour. The bands strong live performances, coupled with high record sales and growing number of fans, landed them time slots on Ozzfest 1999 and 2000, a European tour with Black Sabbath and an appearance at Woodstock 1999. In 2000, Godsmack released their second CD, Awake. This album's title track dominated rock radio and broke chart records throughout 2000 and 2001. The CD's instrumental track "Vampires" earned the band its first Grammy nomination. Godsmack toured Awake selling out arenas and outdoor venues nationwide. They gave their fans their moneys worth with a gothic stage, video and pyro; lots of pyro! In 2002, Sully was asked to A&R the soundtrack for the motion picture , the third installment in the Mummy saga. The song Godsmack wrote and performed lived up to its title: "I Stand Alone" became the #1 single at Rock Radio and the most played Active Rock song in 2002 for 14 weeks straight. After spending over four years on the road the band decided to take a break before heading back into the studio. It was during this break that Shannon Larkin, a friend of Sully's for 15 years, formerly of America, AMEN and , was asked to replace Tommy Stewart. The new line up headed to Miami to write and record the bands third CD. was released in April of 2003 and became the #1 selling record in America of that week. Faceless also brought another tour that ran 23 months strong inlcuding two more Grammy nominations for "I Stand Alone" and an 11 month international arena tour with the kings of metal, Metallica!! In March of 2004, Godsmack released their first acoustic EP, The Other Side which included new versions of previous hits like "Keep Away", "Re-Align" and a haunting new version of the Navy's recruit song, "Awake"! This also spawned a side tour of its own. Godsmack filled in breaks from the big stage with Metallica with intimate storytelling acoustic shows giving their fans the explanation behind the title, The Other Side. With rich velvet curtains, stone gargoyles and strings of Christmas lights illuminating theatres around the country, fans had a whole new experience of the true talents of this unique foursome. Stripped down to nothing, Godsmack continued to deliver one of the best acoustic performances of our time. Godsmack torrent download. Godsmack - Discography (1997-2016) Country: USA Genre: Alt. Boston-based group Godsmack infuse a sound influenced by Alice in Chains and Metallica with mystical imagery and percussive tribal rhythms. Part of the late-'90s post-grunge/nu-metal wave, the band originally comprised vocalist Sully Erna, guitarist Tony Rambola, bassist Robbie Merrill, and drummer Tommy Stewart. After debuting in 1997 with All Wound Up, Godsmack signed with Universal, which in 1998 reissued the LP as a self-titled effort with a handful of new tracks; at that point Stewart -- who'd left the group in mid-1997 and was replaced by drummer Joe d'Arco -- returned to the lineup. The band's audience built slowly but surely and Godsmack was certified gold in 1999, the same year the group was invited to join the Ozzfest tour. By the next year, the LP had sold over three million copies, thanks to hit singles like "Whatever," "Voodoo," and "Keep Away." In 2000, the group again played Ozzfest, and released its second proper album, Awake, that fall. In January 2001, Awake earned the band a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Instrumental Performance for the song "Vampires," and by March, it had sold two million copies. Hot on the heels of their continuing success, their single "I Stand Alone" propelled the hype of the movie The Scorpion King in March 2002. As the single maintained Godsmack's strong presence at modern rock radio into the summer, founding member Tommy Stewart left the band in June. The David Bottrill-produced (Peter Gabriel, Tool, Mudvayne) album Faceless appeared in April 2003. It also marked the debut of ex-Amen drummer Shannon Larkin. The all-acoustic Other Side arrived in spring 2004. Two years later, Erna stepped behind the board to helm IV, a collection of new material that reached number one while both retaining the group's trademark heft and expanding its sonic palette with the help of producer Andy Johns, who engineered Led Zeppelin's IV. A greatest-hits collection, Good Times, Bad Times: 10 Years of Godsmack, arrived in 2007, followed by the band's fifth full-length offering, The Oracle, in 2010. The set became their third chart-topping release. That same year, Erna issued his debut solo album, Avalon. Godsmack torrent download. Im going to post this review on the bands profile as im reviewing about 3 of their albums all in one review. I came across Godsmack a while back while listening to one of the ChroniX radio stations, in which they played Mistakes (from Awake). This was at a time where i was finding my place in music, trying a variation of popular genres and music and wasnt really focusing on downloading or owning albums thus only having one track by an artist most of the time. Anyway i didnt actually listen to Mistakes all that much, it got lost in amongst another 4000 single songs, which happened to alot of my music. Just of late, its almost a year since ive started this, i have been aiming to listen to the full albums of tracks i downloaded, exploring deeper into the genres, defining what genres i like, looking into independent artists and taking recommendations from friends. More so, i have gotten into listening to an artists whole catalogue (or the majority of it, via Spotify) to actually give them a fair trial. Anyway, about a couple of weeks ago i was hanging with one of my metalhead friends at my house and we were going through music on his ipod (FYI music is a great conversation if the person's in it are passionate). We somehow got to come across Godsmack, and i was like oh yeah Godsmack - and yes i had completely forgotten their existence. And so this prompted me to give them a proper listen. Also seeing as my friend who prompted this has a reputable taste in all forms of metal, and opinions on them, i made it a high priority. Another playing factor in putting this artist on top priority was my pursuit into listening to rock bands from the late 90s. And so over the past 5 days ive listened to three albums by Godsmack. Their first three studio albums (not the independent release from 1997); Godsmack, Awake and Faceless. IV isnt available on spotify and i wasnt planning on downloading it just to give it a listen. Okay so after the first song, with my previous knowledge of 'Mistakes', i could define their sound/genre; which would allow me to look more closely at the way they put out their sound. Godsmack to me sound like Creed's Human Clay album but with more angst and anger. Maybe thats because of Sully's almost 1 dimensional voice, similar of that to Scott Stapp's of Creed. They also have the sludgy sound of Grunge music, more Post-Grunge but not soppy Post-Post-Grunge (i.e. Nickelback's All The Right Reasons). Some websites (Allmusic, Wiki, RYM) have genres such as Alternative Metal, Hard Rock and at times - linked to them. They do fit Alt. Metal, although the last two Hard Rock and Nu Metal i would leave to other bands - but there are some instincts of Hard Rock in their music, which is understood because one of Post-Grunge's root genres is Hard Rock. Of course like most rock bands their sound has changed, not alot but its definetly developed. And so i shall now go through how this has changed between Godsmack, Awake and Faceless. In their debut they have a typical Post-Grunge sound. Yes some tracks do have bits of Nu Metal, as its movement was big (i mean BIG) during the late nineties. This for me is one of the sounds i dislike, some people like it - i just dont, its the reason why Human Clay (Creed) never gets touched by my CD player laser ever. Why, because for me its just too slow, sludgy and to be honest i find it boring. This could be one of the reasons i avoid Grunge style music, purely because i cant be arsed to listen to the same sound that was being put out over and over during the late 90s. So yes their first album was when they were the most Creed like. Heres a Genre breakdown for Godsmack (album): Post-Grunge = 80%, Hard Rock = 5%, Alt. Metal = 5%, Nu Metal = 10% Okay so moving on two years to the millennium. I have a Kerrang album from this year and one from '99 - and the types of music are very similar. 2000 in rock, Nu Metal is at its mainstream hype with Limp Bizkit taking places in the Top 40, but bands like Blink 182 and SUM 41 are showing the future for more Pop Punk like music. And so with any rock album i listen to from 2000 i sort of know what sound i shall be receiving. Oh by the way, grunge and its forms are not so very popular. And this is all relevant and visible in this album - Awake. The Creed like sound has began to fade, although Sully's voice is haunting in its resemblance to Stapps. Its this album that i actually started to give Godsmack a chance, if Awake sounded like Godsmack then id have given up listening to their discography and given them (the band) bad reviews from then on. Its this album that more of the Alternative Metal side is shining through. Which is good! Because although not my favourite type of metal (that'd have to be thrash) its not one i dislike. Again i dont see the Nu Metal side of Godsmack in this album, its pretty much non-existent and if there was a form of it it'd be in the debut. They have a more defined and grabbing sound this time. Some pretty decent solos and riffs. Heres my breakdown for Awake: Post- Grunge = 50%, Hard Rock = 15%, Alt. Metal = 35%, Nu Metal = 0% Now i shall move on to Faceless, in my opinion the best of the three. The Grunge sound is near enough gone, and their more Hard Rock, Alt. Metal sound is really coming in leaps and bounds. Much more depth in their sound, i.e. it doesn't sound like a constant drone of guitars. Better riffs and solo's and Sully's voice is just that bit more angry and really makes you pay attention to what he's saying. Here's my break down: Post-Grunge = 10%, Hard Rock = 40%, Alt. Metal = 50%, Nu Metal = 0% Okay so thats my opinion on each album and yes i feel they have progressed. I haven't lisented to IV yet, but i can only think it would be similar to faceless. Why, because one thing you learn with these types of rock bands they dont want to change their sound to drastically as they don't want to alienate or lose fans they picked up with their first original sound. Ive seen people comment that the lyric writing/structure is not something to jump up and down about - which i can sort of guess, purely due to the type of music it is. Overall i'd give Godsmack a rating, their first three albums combined, of 3/5 - which if you look at my profile is an average rating, but its unlikely i would tell my friends to listen to them. Why because they are using a sound that was overused, and still today is very mainstream. So dont listen to Godsmack if you're looking for something different because you won't find it, but do give them a listen if your a fan of Alternative Metal or Grunge. Even hard rock fans, like myself, would happily listen to this album. The best album out of the first three would have to be Faceless, purely because it has the best sound and is a bit different to their original sound.
