  • Press Release Brafa 2020 All Together Different
PRESS RELEASE BRAFA 2020 ALL TOGETHER DIFFERENT Over more than fifty years, Galerie Oscar De Vos built a tradition of prestigious exhibitions on Modern Belgian Art, with an emphasis on the art of The Latem School. Artists such as George Minne, Valerius De Saedeleer, Gustave Van de Woestyne, Emile Claus, Albert Servaes, Constant Permeke, Gust. De Smet, Frits Van den Berghe and Hubert Malfait enjoy the appreciation of a large audience throughout museum exhibitions, publications in Belgium and abroad. Each of these artists loved the nature of Latem. There they created their works spontaneously and interacted with the other artists who resided in the village. The region of Flanders has long been an area rich in art. On the outskirts of the city Ghent, along the river Lys, artists relocated to the village of Sint-Martens-Latem. In Flanders, artists converged on Latem because of its beauty. In this pastoral environment were born a great many attractive works that could not have been originated in any city. The artworks on show during BRAFA 2020 will mainly be divided in two thematic sections: Symbolism and Expressionism (1890-1930). The collection of Galerie Oscar De Vos for the 65th BRAFA edition will mark this period as part of the flow of art history. The focus will be on artworks of an important provenance, being fresh on the art market and that have been exhibited in international art institutions, such as Venice Art Biennale, Amsterdam Stedelijk Museum, Eindhoven Van Abbe Museum, Hamburg Kunsthaus, London Royal Academy of Arts, Maastricht Bonnefanten Museum, Sao Paolo Museo de Arta Moderna.

  • Father Hubert Boumans (1914-1993): “Father Ever Blasting”
Father Hubert Boumans (1914-1993): “Father Ever Blasting” The CICM “Elenchus Defunctorum” of 2015 mentions the names of 2,342 deceased confreres. Some of them died very young. Two became more than one hundred years old. Among them we have numerous pioneers, fine scholars, and outstanding bishops. Many of them were also generous brothers and priests who never made it to Wikipedia or Facebook. About one confrere belonging to this last group, namely father Hubert Boumans, I will write a few lines. From the end of October 1983 up to the end of April 1988, I was a missionary in Natonin, Mountain Province, Philippines, and a distant neighbor of father Hubert Boumans who was the rector of the mission of Barlig. Father Boumans was born in Ubachsberg, municipality of Voerendaal, Limburg, the Netherlands, on February 10, 1914. At the minor seminary of Sparrendaal, he completed his humanities. He entered the novitiate in 1935, and was dreaming of being a missionary in China. He pronounced his first vows on August 8, 1936. After having finished his philosophical studies and three years of theology, he was ordained a priest on July 25, 1941. The second world war delayed his departure for the Philippines. From August 1944 to April 1946, he was treasurer of the novitiate in the Netherlands. Only on August 9, 1946, was he able to sail for the Pearl of the East. At the end of 1946, he was assigned to Barlig mission which at that time covered also the mission of Natonin. His stay of 41 years in Barlig mission was only interrupted by a four year stay in Dutch Limburg for mission promotion (1955-1959).

  • Kunstwerkstede De Coene Kortrijk, Flanders
Kunstwerkstede De Coene Kortrijk, Flanders Introduction or many, the Kortrijkse Kunstwerkstede Gebroeders De Coene is still an unknown. Yet three generations have grown up with De Coene furniture and their interiors. Whether or not they were aware of it, many people have Monumental depiction of the naval battle of Sluis in what was then the spent time in De Coene constructions: immediately after gaming room (the former concert hall) of the Casino-Kursaal in Fthe Second World War, in prefabricated temporary schools; later, Blankenberge, design by Albert Saverys, 1946 in market halls, warehouses, sports facilities and exhibition spac- es constructed from elegantly curved, laminated wooden beams. All bearing the De Coene signature. When visiting Expo 58, how many people were aware that the Kunstwerkstede assisted in the construction of at least 28 pavilions? Which of the many visitors to the Royal Library in Brussels notices the perfectly functioning inte- rior, designed as a total work of art? Few design-lovers know that over the course of the twentieth century, the Kunstwerkstede De Coene won countless prizes at national and international fairs and world exhibitions. Only fans of Art Deco will know that Kortrijk was the largest interbellum production center of Art Deco furni- ture in Belgium – and that its reputation and market were interna- tional in scope. After the Second World War, De Coene was one of the most important distributors of modern furniture in Belgium for people from all walks of life, as well as the Benelux producer of the exclusive Knoll furniture line. The firm collaborated with such well-known figures as Marcel Breuer, Charlotte Perriand and Jean Prouvé.

The Low Countries. Jaargang 5 bron The Low Countries. Jaargang 5. World Port and Provincial City The name ‘Antwerp’ - or ‘Antwerpen’ as it is in Dutch - is related to the Middle Dutch ‘aenwerp’, meaning alluvial land, but no true citizen of Antwerp will accept this modest explanation. In the local dialect the ‘h’ of, for example, ‘hand’ is not sounded, and so clearly ‘Antwerpen’ derives from ‘Hand-werpen’, meaning ‘Hand throwing’. This explanation of the The Brabo fountain on the main square, by Jef Lambeaux (1887). name has its origin in the well-loved legend of the young hero Brabo, who freed the poor fishermen from the tyranny of the giant Antigoon. The giant would chop off and throw away the hand of any fisherman sailing down the River Scheldt who refused to pay a toll. After Brabo had defeated Antigoon, the Emperor allowed him to throw the giant's chopped-off hand from the tower of his stronghold, thereby demarcating the area of the new city. This legend comfortably links the origin of the city with the right to free navigation and liberation from tyranny. However, alongside the Antigoon legend, which the romantic nineteenth century consecrated with the impressive statue of the hand-throwing Brabo on the main square, there also persists another die-hard Antwerp self-image, and this one does have a historical basis.
