Rumor Psychology Introduction We are swimming in rumors. —Manager at a small company facing severe downsizing Tropical Fantasy Fruit Punch contains a substance that causes black men to become sterile. —False rumor circulating in New York City that caused sales to plummet 70% (Freedman, 1991) Israel warned 4000 Jews not to report for work at the World Trade Center on September llth, 2001. —False rumor circulating among anti-Zionist groups (Hari, 2002; U.S. Department of State, 2005) umors are an enduring feature of social and organizational landscapes. They attract attention, evoke emotion, incite involvement, affect attitudes and actions—and they are ubiquitous. A small example includes the groundless rumors R that McDonald's uses worm meat in its hamburgers grounded sales in Atlanta (Goggins, 1979). Sober reports that Paul McCartney was dead were discussed with sadness and snowballed, even after a photo and interview with a very much alive McCartney was published in LIFE magazine (Rosnow, 1991). Office scuttlebutt often eats away at trust— and feeds on distrust—among organizational members (DiFonzo, Bordia, & Rosnow, 1994). False rumors that a Haitian coup leader was to be set free spurred angry riots that killed 10 people ("10 Die in Haiti," 1991). Seven million people heard the incorrect claim that Coca-Cola contains 4 RUMOR PSYCHOLOGY carcinogens (Kapferer, 1989). Two bizarre and fallacious rumors, wide- spread in Africa, were that the AIDS virus was developed in a western laboratory, and that a World Health Organization team inoculated 100,000 Africans with an untested vaccine that caused the continent's pandemic of AIDS (Lynch, 1989). Harmful or potentially harmful ru- mors reach the ears of top corporate public relations personnel nearly once per week on average (DiFonzo & Bordia, 2000). E-mailed computer-related hoaxes, such as the "Good Times" virus that will rewrite one's hard drive and the "teddy bear" icon that destroys your whole system, regularly alarm novice Internet users (Bordia & DiFonzo, 2004; "JDBGMGR.EXE," 2002). The catalog continues in abundance; rumors flourish, fascinate, and frustrate. It is not surprising then that the record of scholarly interest in the psychology of rumor is long and illustrious; for over 7 decades social and organizational researchers in psychology and sociology have researched rumor. Some brief highlights we note include the early and substantial work of Jamuna Prasad (1935) who studied rumors circulating after a cataclysmic Indian earthquake. Interest in the subject of rumor psychol- ogy peaked during World War II and rumor researchers included such well-known social psychologists as Floyd H. Allport, Kurt Back, Dorwin Cartwright, Leon Festinger, Stanley Schachter, and John Thibaut (e.g., F. H. Allport & Lepkin, 1945; Back et al, 1950; Festinger et al, 1948; Schachter & Burdick, 1955). The standard work during this period was G. W. Allport and Leo J. Postman's The Psychology of Rumor published in 1947. The eminent Tamotsu Shibutani published the landmark socio- logical treatise Improvised News: A Sociological Study of Rumor in 1966. Ralph L. Rosnow and his associates refined the conceptual understand- ing of rumor and systematically investigated the dynamics of rumor transmission in the latter decades of the 20th century (e.g., Jaeger, Anthony, & Rosnow, 1980; Rosnow, 1974, 1980, 1988, 1991; Rosnow, Esposito, & Gibney, 1988; Rosnow & Fine, 1976; Rosnow & Georgoudi, 1985; Rosnow, Yost, & Esposito, 1986). Other social and organizational psychologists and sociologists contributed significantly to the body of knowledge regarding rumor as well during this period (e.g., K. Davis, 1972; Fine, 1992; Kapferer, 1987/1990; Knopf, 1975; Koenig, 1985; Morin, 1971; Pratkanis & Aronson, 1991; P. A. Turner, 1993; R. H. Turner & Killian, 1972). And within the past decade, social and organi- zational psychologists have paid increased attention to this topic (e.g., R. S. Baron, David, Brunsman, & Inman, 1997; Bordia & DiFonzo, 2002, 2004, 2005; Bordia, DiFonzo, & Schulz, 2000; Bordia & Rosnow, 1998; DiFonzo & Bordia, 1997, 2002b, 2006, in press; DiFonzo, Bordia, & Winterkorn, 2003; DiFonzo et al., 1994; Fine, Heath, & Campion- Vincent, 2005; Fiske, 2004; Heath, Bell, &• Sternberg, 2001; Houmanfar & Johnson, 2003; Kimmel, 2004a, 2004b; Michelson & Mouly, 2004; Introduction 5 Pendleton, 1998; Pratkanis & Aronson, 2001; Rosnow, 2001; Rosnow & Foster, 2005). Indeed, an electronic discussion group of scholars interested in both rumor and gossip research was formed in 2003 (Rumor- [email protected]).' Therefore, some of what is known about rumor is quite old and some of it is quite new; and so rumor theory is due for synthesis into an updated whole. That is our first purpose in writing this book. We have made a concerted effort to integrate and update findings from all phases of rumor's long research history. Such a work is very much needed; during a recent electronic discussion among social psycholo- gists, the topic of post-9/11

    “Leave It to Beaver” and a Family Perspective Jeff Kingsley December 16, 2013 Many of us fondly recall watching a TV show called Leave It to Beaver, that ran from 1957-63, and laughing at the antics of little “Beaver,” enjoying the give and take (and teasing) between him and elder brother Wally, while admiring the wisdom of his parents, June and Ward Cleaver. Little did we know that this show, in one sense, held the key to creating the ideal world. Not that it was perfect or that it can “easily” be applied to the perhaps more complicated world in which we now find ourselves firmly embedded. But the main elements that comprise an ideal family were there, and as Reverend Moon often said, consonant with the great sages of the past, the true society is like an ideal family writ large. This concept reminds me of a matryoshka doll I purchased when I was in Russia helping with the Divine Principle workshops being held in the Crimea in the early 90s. It consisted of a finely crafted set of wooden dolls of decreasing size placed one inside the other. The art dates back to the 1890s, but one of the most popular versions in the early 1990s was a wooden doll of Mikhail Gorbachev, which, when opened, led to a virtual cornucopia of “great” Soviet leaders in reverse chronological order, one inside the other, culminating in Vladimir Lenin in the center. The intimation was that all the Communist leaders were cut from the same cloth, following the pattern set by Lenin.

Eventually, the brothers take the problem to dad, who solves the problem off-camera with a few well-chosen words of fatherly advice. "A voice-over will announce that some problems even dad can't solve. If the viewer has a problem and needs someone to talk to, call the Crisis Hot Line of Outreach To You, a company that provides counseling over its 900 telephone number." The very narrow legal question posed by this proposed script for a TV commercial is whether the advertiser can run a commercial intended to conjure up thoughts of Jerry Mathers and Tony Dow in the minds of viewers, without violating their rights of publicity. The question is narrow, but the answer, based on First Amendment-protected parody, is even thinner. "Jim," the creative director asked, "we need to know if this ad is legal?" "Many states have passed laws that protect the right of publicity, being the right of a person to control the commercial use of his or her identity," I answered.

SOME MODERATORS OF USING THE SELF AS A REFERENCE FOR BEHAVIOR by JACQUELINE ALEXANDRA NEWBOLD (Under the Direction of Leonard Martin) ABSTRACT Behavior is jointly determined by one’s environment and personality, but the extent to which they influence behavior may vary across cultures. Immediate-return societies have a loose culture (i.e., few societal norms) while delayed-return societies have a tight culture (i.e., many strict societal norms). Because of this difference in societal norms, immediate- return societies (vs. delayed-return societies) allow for more expression of individual differences in strong attitudes or personality traits. In two studies, I explored the relation between two internal dispositions and related behaviors. Experiment 1 utilized a strong disposition (i.e., highly heritable), and Experiment 2 utilized a weak deposition (not highly heritable). I hypothesized that the disposition-behavior relation would be stronger for participants placed in an immediate-return (v. delayed-return) mindset when a strong disposition was tested, but that there would be no difference in the strength of the disposition-behavior relationship between condition when a weak disposition was measured. These hypotheses were supported and suggest that some societies may foster a personality-behavior link, whereas others foster a norm-behavior link. Television shows such as, Leave it to Beaver, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet and Father Knows Best, filled the airwaves, and magazines such as McCalls and Good Housekeeping lined the news stands with pictures of the American way of life in the 1950s. A suburban, middle class life where families lived in a furnished and newly equipped modern home, complete with car, two children and a dog. Where father went to work and mother stayed at home baking and taking care of the family and left the cares of the world to her husband.[1] However, alongside this picture of an ideal America, the media presented the Red Scare, and the threat of communist infiltration that would destroy this American way of life. A considerable portion of white, educated, middle-class housewives and mothers content in their role as wives and mothers embraced the prevailing Red Scare and its rhetoric of anti- Communism and the cult of motherhood, which promoted mothers as defenders of morality and the American way of life against the threat of communism. As a result they established grassroots activities within their children’s schools, and communities and exercised a conservative political voice that would ultimately shift the Republican Party from a democratic moderate party to a more fundamentally conservative right wing party that nominated Barry Goldwater for president in 1964 and placed Ronald Reagan as governor of California in 1966, thus making conservatism mainstream.[2] The activism of middle class, suburban housewives after WWII in their role as mothers was not a new phenomenon.
