snoeck Cuny Janssen: There Was a Child Went Forth. By Cuny Janssen

The famous poem by Walt Whitman (1819–1892) not only makes use of the imaginative world of children, but its elegantly sweeping lines have quite a sobering effect on the reader. Cuny Janssen presents in her latest, three-part photo-essay nature photographs as well as portraits of Amsterdam children; she shows in an inimitable way the intermediate state where naiveté is lost and gives way to knowledge. The natural images of parks and park-like neighborhoods do not, surprisingly, form a true contrast to the fantastic realism of the children's images. As in Janssen's earlier works, her portraits never seem to be conceived with a particular moment in mind, but rather appear like stills, as frozen September 2017 images from a movie. In this way, the artist, as ever, is able to keep 9783864422126 | £82.50 distance and closeness to her and our objects in floating suspense – Volume in three parts, and this, even though, as Cuny Janssen says, this book was different slipcase with magnetic catch from her previous projects, insofar as the images are captured in her 124 pp | 310 x 250 mm immediate environment, rather than from other worlds and cultures. 121 col ills Rights: Worldwide exc. snoeck Wolfgang Träger: A Fluxus Family Portrait Album Text by Kerstin Skrobanek

In 1962, as a scandalous avant-garde, the Fluxus movement conquered art associations and theaters in Germany. Artists such as Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, John Cage and Ben Patterson approached music, art, and literature in a completely new and often quite concrete way. First, the Rhineland and then the New York art scene became infected with the Fluxus-virus. In the 1970s, conceptual art and land-art emerged as the new avant-garde, but this was by no means the end for imaginative, enchanting and revolutionary Fluxus events, which still take place today. Just another Gender Theory By Filippo Romanelli

We used to think about gender as a double reality, male one one side, female on the other. Just before being born, through clinical examination they determin our sex. We are classified as male or female. At the same time, they give us some specific and definite roles expectative. Giacomelli’s landscape is both real and invented, just as his eye is both visionary and visual. It is a pretext to represent another situation. His landscapes are “written landscapes” in which the horizon is almost completely eliminated: a fusion of time and non-time. In his landscapes, he captured the marks, material and furrows of the earth and in them he found parallels with human bodies, since the earth, in his poetics, is the flesh of man. Overall, his work is characterized by the richness of its internal references. JOHN RULE Autumn 2017 19 Santiago Sierra: Mea Culpa Edited by Lutz Henke & Diego Sileo

Mea Culpa is the first extended Italian anthology dedicated ART to conceptual artist Santiago Sierra. Born in 1966 in Madrid, for almost thirty years now his work has been moving on the rough grounds of criticism to the contemporary socio-political conditions. As the bearer of the dark truth of our time, Sierra is often stigmatised for his intense and ambiguous performances. Nevertheless, their visual language, their complex and energetic symbolism and the fact that they are plunged into the reality of people give them a rare emotional impact. Euan Uglow / Sargy Mann Edited by Chirs Bedson

Published to accompany the exhibition Euan Uglow / Sargy Mann at The Collection, this book looks at the work of two important modern British painters who devoted their lives as artists to what Robert Pepperell describes in his essay as ‘subjective realism’. Mann and Uglow met in 1960 at Camberwell Art School where they and others, including Frank Auerbach, were passionately committed to making work about direct perceptual experiences, influenced not just by the masters of European painting but also by the revolution in the science of perception which was happening at the time. As Mann says ‘When I first went to Camberwell Art School in 1960 I met remarkable painter teachers notably Dick Lee, Euan Uglow and Frank Auerbach who said to me ‘we will not teach you July 2017 how to paint, but we can teach you through the practice of drawing and 9780956237798 | £20.00 painting to see more, to see better’ And I found that this was true.” Paperback | 72pp | 250 x 200 mm 35 colour ills Rights: Worldwide

Baselitz: Preview with Review Edited by Judit Borus

Georg Baselitz, who celebrates his 80th birthday next year, counts among the most important German painters of our times, whose oeuvre, whilst firmly rooted in the centuries-old traditions of German painting, lies beyond all artistic movements and styles, making him an exceptionally autonomous figure in art. For over fifty years, he has never stopped reflecting on the very nature of one of the most ancient genres in the visual arts, that of figural painting. In Baselitz’s art, constant renewal is inseparable from the act of looking back on the achievements of the past, and continuously revisiting them. The art of Georg Baselitz, has always stood apart from the current trends in painting, regardless of how times and fashions have changed. The age that he has lived through has not always shown July 2017 respect for painting, least of all figurative painting. Edited by Luca Massimo Barbero ART

Alighiero Boetti: Minimum/Maximum, an exhibition, at the Fondazione Cini, in Venice, is the result of an innovative process of selection and comparison between the minimum and maximum formats of works from the artist’s most iconic cycles. It focuses on one of the themes that best represents Boetti’s creative process, the theme of format, and is directly connected with the notion of the time required to realise an artwork. On a sensorial level, the minimum formats complement the larger works in dialectical opposition, characteristic of Boetti’s creative process. Divided into different sections with over 20 artworks, the exhibition contains Boetti’s most emblematic cycles, including Ricami (embroideries), Aerei (planes), Mappe (maps), Tutto (everything) and Biro (works September 2017 made with a ballpoint pen). It also provides an opportunity to show 9788899534332 | £44.00 works that are largely unknown to the wider public, such as Estate Paperback | 240 pp | 300 x 240 mm 70 (1970) and Titoli (1978). The project explores Boetti’s strongly dialectic thought process as it revolves around the theme of photocopies. The volume contains extensive written material, including an introductory essay by Obrist, another by Agata Boetti, a long, previously unpublished conversation between Agata Boetti and Obrist and two critical analyses by Michelle Cotton and Mario Garcia Torres respectively. ART Edited by Enrico Crispolti

This catalogue, published for the exhibition dedicated to the artist at Art Basel 2017, is the result of research conducted to provide a deeper understanding of a specific cycle of works by Lucio Fontana. The paintings on show, and analysed in this catalogue, belong to his series “Fine Di Dio”. They were painted on egg-shaped, identically-sized canvases, and feature constellations of “holes” and/or slashes and/ or scratches, which are sometimes limited to one part of the monochromatic canvas, while others cover the entire surface painted in oils (and sometimes sequins). In an interview with Carlo Cisventi in 1963, the artist explained: “For me, they represent the infinite, the inconceivable, the end of figurative September 2017 representation, the beginning of nothingness.” Lucio Fontana 9788899534370 | £71.00 is unanimously considered as one of the leading artists in the Hardback | 336 pp | 300 x 240 mm generation between the 1950s and 1960s who contributed to 33 col, 190 b/w ills the radical linguistic and conceptual change in contemporary Rights: UK & Eire only art. Glenn Brown: Piaceri Sconosciuti Edited by Antonella Nesi and Sergio Risaliti

Glenn Brown creates an artistic language that transcends time and pictorial conventions. His mannerist instincts stem from the desire to breathe new life into the distant confines of historical form. Through references, appropriation and research, he presents a contemporary reading of images that are fixed in memory. His figures and landscapes, borrowed from the world of history of art, are gradually transformed in exuberant entities. Different historic periods: Renaissance, Impressionism, and Surrealism, are blended in sophisticated compositions. Brown creates a space in which the abstract, the visceral, the rational and irrational, the beautiful and grotesque, come together in a frenetic amalgamation. This exhibition will be held at the Museo Bardini in Florence. Jan Fabre has always been strongly fascinated by alchemy and the memory of matter. Published on the occasion of his exhibition at the Abbazia di San Gregorio, at Venice Biennale, the book includes previously unpublished works and contexts: works in glass and bone created by the artist during a period that spans from 1977 to 2017. The artist makes a reference to Flemish Masters who used crushed bone in their paintings , and to Venetian glass-blowers. Fabre has deliberately chosen two materials that are hard and strong, but delicate and fragile at the same time. “The philosophical and poetic reason behind associating human and animal bones with glass, comes from a recollection of my sister as a child playing September 2017 with a tiny glass object. snoeck Betty Tompkins Edited by Karin Pernegger

In 1969, Betty Tompkins, then living in New York, began her large, photorealistic and detailed oil paintings of penetrations and masturbations of female genitalia. On the occasion of the Reformation Anniversary 2017, Deichtorhallen Hamburg show a comprehensive exhibition by American artist Bill Viola featuring 13 video installations created since 1992. His work examines core themes of human life – birth, emotion, spirituality, love and death. The artist is particularly interested in the mystical traditions of Christianity, Zen Buddhism and Islam. Reflected in almost all his video installations, there is a spiritual openness that addresses the viewers' bodies as a medium for borderline experiences, which contributes to their impressive aura. At times, their ultra- slow motion aesthetics allude to aesthetics influenced by the iconography of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance – with archaic force, yet formally highly sophisticated, these unique images convey the experience of the sublime and spiritual using July 2017 the pictorial language of the globalized 21st century. snoeck Carl Ostendarp Edited by Matthia Lobke

Carl Ostendarp will now be presenting his first comprehensive solo-exhibition at Kunstverein Heilbronn in Germany. For his solo shows, he usually creates extensive wall-paintings reminiscent of landscapes on which he positions works on paper and canvas. The linguistic images that are created in front of the viewer's eye, and which, in their onomatopoeic uniqueness, animate the visitor to recite them aloud, oscillate between reading and looking – inevitably suggesting the idea of music and rhythm: reading and looking with added listening. In 2014, Ken Johnson wrote in the New York Times about Carl Ostendarp’s works that they had the same effect as someone belching in church during worship. This admiring observation is aimed at the artist’s oxymoronic skill of combining the incompatible: onomatopoeia from comics with cool September 2017 color-field or hard-edge painting. Memory and its use as historiography is a central theme in Dani Gal’s work. 28 JOHN RULE Autumn 2017 snoeck Herbert Hinteregger: Untitled (Flow)

Edited by Matthia Löbke, Nina Tabassomi, Jürgen Tabor ART

It probably all started with Herbert Hinteregger’s childhood dream of being able to cut a piece from the Schwarzsee, a moor lake in his Tyrolean homeland. Looking at the surfaces of his images painted with ballpoint pen ink, it becomes apparent that he has found the perfect painting medium to achieve metallic, shiny, opaque, dark blue surfaces of unfathomable depth. Ballpoint pens are highly pigmented and highly viscous in their consistency, which means they do not leave any trace of brushstrokes, while preserving the painterly blur of a seemingly perpetual flow. The ink is obtained in a long and obsessive process of draining out countless refills for ballpoint pens, and then applied to various base materials such July 2017 as denim, tulle, brocade and linen. It was probably during the 1960s that the medium of painting began to cannibalize itself, and thus entered the perpetual loop of repetition, mutation and transformation where its deformation falls prey to recurrent deformations. Peter Saul is one of the most important protagonists of this deformation process that is, quite mistakenly, always attributed exclusively to Pop Art. In his painterly and graphic work, however, he created a complex amalgam of high and counterculture that combines comics, pop, surrealism, abstract expressionism with the radical (and partly trivial) social critique of the Haschrebellen (Hashish Rebels).
